It may have taken the Notorious B.I.G. a few years to follow up his milestone debut, Ready to Die (1994), with another album, but when he did return with Life After Death in 1997, he did so in a huge way. The ambitious album, intended as somewhat of a sequel to Ready to Die, picking up where its predecessor left off, sprawled across the span of two discs, each filled with music, 24 songs in all. You'd expect any album this sprawling to include some lackluster filler. That's not really the case with Life After Death, however. Like 2Pac's All Eyez on Me from a year before, an obvious influence, Biggie's album made extensive use of various producers -- DJ Premier, Easy Mo Bee, Clark Kent, RZA, and more of New York's finest -- resulting in a diverse, eclectic array of songs. Plus, Biggie similarly brought in various guest rappers -- Jay-Z, Lil' Kim, Bone Thugs, Too $hort, L.O.X., Mase -- a few vocalists -- R. Kelly, Angela Winbush, 112 -- and, of course, Puff Daddy, who is much more omnipresent here than on Ready to Die, where he mostly remained on the sidelines. It's perhaps Puffy himself to thank for this album's biggest hits: "Mo Money Mo Problems," "Hypnotize," "Sky's the Limit," three songs that definitely owe much to his pop touch. There's still plenty of the gangsta tales on Life After Death that won Biggie so much admiration on the streets, but it's the pop-laced songs that stand out as highlights. In hindsight, Biggie couldn't have ended his career with a more fitting album than Life After Death. Over the course of only two albums, he achieved every success imaginable, perhaps none greater than this unabashedly over-reaching success. Ready to Die is a milestone album, for sure, but it's nowhere near as extravagant or epic as Life After Death. - allmusic.com

Originally released in 1999, The Root's fourth studio album reissue will be a limited edition 2LP featuring 4 alternate cover variations. The album, named after the W.B. Yeats poem ‘The Second Coming,’ was art directed by the legendary Kenny Gravillis, who chose five different designs for the cover; each one is a striking image that represents moments in history when humanity was at a breaking point. Things Fall Apart is widely considered The Legendary Roots Crew most ambitious masterpiece. The album features urban legends Erykah Badu, Common, Mos Def, and more.

Things Fall Apart is the fourth studio album by The Roots, released on February 23, 1999. Widely regarded as one of the group’s masterpieces, the album helped solidify The Roots' position as one of the most important and innovative acts in hip-hop. Its title is a reference to the classic 1958 novel "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe, which explores themes of societal disruption and cultural conflict.

The album was released at a pivotal moment in hip-hop, during the late '90s “conscious rap” movement, and addresses a wide range of social, political, and personal issues, including racism, violence, love, and the commercialization of hip-hop.
The overall tone of the album is dark and introspective, with a sense of urgency as it reflects on the state of both hip-hop culture and society at large.
The title and themes suggest a world on the verge of collapse, with lyrics that critique the impact of consumerism, poverty, and systemic oppression, but also explore more intimate personal struggles.

Things Fall Apart is a sonic blend of hip-hop, jazz, neo-soul, and funk, featuring live instrumentation, complex rhythms, and eclectic samples, which set it apart from the more sample-heavy production styles of its time.
Questlove's drumming provides the backbone of the album’s live instrumentation, with a laid-back, jazzy feel, while Black Thought's rap style delivers hard-hitting, reflective, and often politically charged lyrics.
The album also features collaborations with notable artists from the Soulquarians collective, including Erykah Badu, Common, D’Angelo, Mos Def (Yasiin Bey), and Jill Scott (though Scott was replaced by Erykah Badu on the album's hit single "You Got Me").

Key Tracks and Highlights:
"Act Too (The Love of My Life)" (featuring Common) – A soulful, reflective track about hip-hop itself, discussing the culture’s origins and the artists' deep connection to it.
"The Next Movement" – One of the album’s lead singles, it features a funky, upbeat sound and showcases Black Thought’s lyrical agility, with commentary on the evolving music industry and staying true to one’s artistic vision.
"You Got Me" (featuring Erykah Badu and Eve) – This is one of The Roots’ most popular songs, blending hip-hop, neo-soul, and R&B. The song tells the story of a long-distance relationship and features soulful vocals by Badu, with Eve providing a brief rap verse.
This track earned The Roots their first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 2000.
"Dynamite!" – A raw, high-energy track with Black Thought delivering rapid-fire verses over an aggressive beat.
"Adrenaline!" (featuring Beanie Sigel) – A harder, more street-oriented track, with intense lyrical deliveries from Black Thought, Malik B, and a guest verse by Beanie Sigel.
"100% Dundee" – Known for its relentless, battle-ready verses and intricate wordplay from Black Thought and Malik B.
"Double Trouble" (featuring Mos Def) – This track has Black Thought and Mos Def trading verses, showcasing lyrical dexterity in a playful, competitive way.

The album is produced mainly by Questlove and The Roots, with additional contributions from D’Angelo, James Poyser, and other members of the Soulquarians, a collective of artists who blended hip-hop, R&B, and neo-soul in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The album’s sound is distinguished by its organic production, combining live instrumentation with layered samples and intricate drum patterns, creating a more textured and atmospheric backdrop for the group’s lyrical content.

The central themes of Things Fall Apart include the disillusionment with mainstream hip-hop, reflecting on the genre's shift toward materialism and commercialism, and broader issues like social injustice, racial tension, and urban decay.
Black Thought and Malik B delve into personal struggles with identity, success, and the pressures of staying true to one’s roots in an increasingly superficial world.
The record also meditates on the role of artists in times of social upheaval, with many tracks expressing a sense of frustration and uncertainty, yet also resolve and hope for change.

Things Fall Apart was a critical and commercial success, marking The Roots' breakthrough into mainstream consciousness while retaining their underground credibility.
It received widespread critical acclaim for its lyrical depth, innovative production, and willingness to tackle tough, socially conscious topics at a time when much of mainstream hip-hop was focused on more materialistic themes.
The album is frequently cited as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time, and it helped to cement The Roots' status as pioneers of the alternative rap movement, alongside artists like Common, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli.
It was nominated for multiple awards and is now considered a landmark in hip-hop and neo-soul, influencing both genres in the years to come.

Things Fall Apart became The Roots' first platinum-selling album, and the success of singles like "You Got Me" introduced the band to a broader audience.
It paved the way for their future albums, including Phrenology (2002) and The Tipping Point (2004), where they continued to experiment with their sound and push boundaries in both musicality and lyricism.
This album is considered a cultural milestone not just for The Roots, but for hip-hop as a whole, reflecting both the possibilities of the genre and the depth of artistry that The Roots have consistently brought to their work.

Made in two versions - classic black and limited multicolor vinyl. Limitied Surprise Edition was pressed in 200 copies and has got an OBI.

After a six year hiatus Twardowski returns with his fourth album on U Know Me Records. The newest outing is a retrofuturistic trip to the author's two biggest influences: instrumental hip-hop and… video games. The new album eschews Twardowski's previous synth-heavy style in favor of multiple layers of chopped and mended together samples, topped off by cuts from U Know Me's own jazz guitarist/turntablist Żyńy. The album invokes video games with the track titles, the LP's title being a homage to coin-ops and via the overall sound: wonky, heavily shuffled, almost-out-of-sync rhythms sounding almost as if the tracks were done sampler in one hand gamepad in the other, over a lengthy, laid back gaming/sequencing session. Maybe if a gamepad was a sampler and instrumental hip-hop was a game, "One Coin Clear" could have been its soundtrack.

For the creation of the 3rd Bulgarian Beat Wave, we chose a small village tucked away in the northern part of the country. Dobrevtsi, located in the Lovech Province, has a population of less than 500 and is home to some pretty good rakia (a national drink you must try) based on our short, but sweet interaction with one of the locals.

This time the weather wasn’t on our side (4 days of non-stop rain), but that’s the beauty of those experiences – you go with the flow. The beat heroes you already know were joined by a new name – Vladko, who added his signature brass/groove energy to the mix. The compilation is a perfect reflection of what we all experienced – a healthy blend of feel-good cozy chill and dark/mellow vibes.

Just like the country’s diverse natural landscape, the idea behind Bulgarian Beat Wave compilation is to offer a non-linear sonic experience and guide listeners through the unique and varied sound of some of the most talented local beatmakers.

Chicago-meets-Philly when Vic Spencer and Small Professor connect on Mudslide, the incredible new album from this pairing of raw talents. Coalmine Records is proud to share this project with the world, and it marks Small Pro’s third collaborative release on the label after he previously linked with Guilty Simpson and the late Sean Price. For the producer, it was an exciting new opportunity to team up with an emcee who’s gruff-voiced, hilarious, and can out-rap anyone on the planet. “Plus, my past Coalmine projects have their own neo/prog-boom-bap vibe, and ‘Mudslide’ continues that particular sonic blueprint,” Small Pro said. And for fans of that sound, you’re not going to find a better example of that sound than this album. It’s just as experimental as it is steeped in the traditions of rap thanks to Vic’s boundary-pushing rhymes and Small Pro’s immensely satisfying instrumentals. Tracks like “Lil Jon’s Weed Stash,” “Ew McNasty’s Revenge,” and “Selfcare Welfare” marry psychedelic vibes with grounded and clever lyricism. Another immediate standout is the lead focus track “Pitfall Music,” which features a mean-mugging guest verse from Flee Lord with cuts supplied by acclaimed turntablist, DJ Revolution.

Wiz Khalifa, Big K.R.I.T., Smoke DZA and Girl Talk have released their collaborative LP Full Court Press. The product of over a decade-long friendship among the artists, the new album is a timeless and upbeat rap record.

On the project’s lead single, March’s “Put You On,” the group drops bars about the come-up of their respective careers. Leading up to the release, they shared more songs and accompanying music videos, including a visual for the party track “Ain’t No Fun” directed by kee and Bawwse.

“Collaborating with Girl Talk, Big K.R.I.T., and Smoke DZA on this album has been a long time coming,” Khalifa said. “Putting it together and throwing the house party for the “Ain’t No Fun” video was the perfect way to wrap the album.”

Spanning ten singles in total, Full Court Press is a nostalgic throwback, featuring undertones of the seventies and eighties alongside the musical stylings of each individual contributor. The album also packs in an additional guest appearance Curren$y.

Your Old Droog is back with the new album, Time. It features appearances by MF Doom, Aesop Rock, Mick Jenkins, Elzhi, Blu, and Wiki.

As the title indicates, the project is the culmination of years of work. "This is basically my debut album," Droog explains. "Some of this material was recorded back in 2017, but I suppose the universe felt it would make more sense if it was released at another point in the future. Hence the name, Time."

Featuring production by Quelle Chris, 88 Keys, Edan, Mono En Stereo, and more, Time= was a surprise release on digital outlets, and is now available on vinyl for the first time.

Real Bad Man and Yungmorpheus are excited to announce their new album The Chalice & The Blade is out now. The album features Boldy James, Kool Keith, Grip, Blu, Fatboi Sharif, and more.

Yungmorpheus is a highly innovative rapper that consistently endeavors to redefine the boundaries of originality and elevate the art of lyricism. Earlier this year, Yungmorpheus dropped his critically acclaimed album “From Whence It Came” which received praise from The Fader, NPR, Spin, and was hailed by Quip Mag as “Everything you need from a hip-hop record.”

Since 2020, Prolific LA-based producer and designer Adam Weissman (Real Bad Man) has been on a sensational run releasing albums with Boldy James, Smoke DZA, and Pink Siifu. The Chalice & The Blade will be Real Bad Man’s third album of the year following his remarkable collaborations with Blu (“Bad News”) and Kool Keith (“Serpent”).

The Chalice & The Blade showcases a unique ambiance marked by a stoney and atmospheric quality, interspersed with elements of funk. Real Bad Man explains the album making process, "I always tailor the music to the artist I’m collaborating with. I sent Morpheus a bunch of beats that he’d sound good over and once he started picking them, that set the path. We’d record and I’d make more beats, and move stuff around, get rid of some songs and record new ones. It was a good process. I like being able to adjust as we go, I think that makes for a good album. We left some songs on the cutting room floor. Cream rises."

Yungmorpheus discussing the new album, “‘The Chalice & The Blade’ is an album primarily rooted in dichotomies; contemplation of action vs action itself, inner locus vs outer locus, pursuit for self vs pursuit for others. Honesty is always the centerpiece. Play if you want cause I’m not!”

On The Chalice & The Blade, the seamless synergy between Real Bad Man and Yungmorpheus takes center stage, showcasing an extraordinary chemistry that elevates every track to new heights of musical innovation.

Hip Hop Sale

Hip hop has long been more than simple scratches, looped breaks and MCs celebrating their DJs. Since Kool Herc’s block parties in the mid-1970s, the culture has grown and developed rapidly. Today, graffiti can be found on every corner. Breakdancing and b-boying have long since become a way of life for many. Hip hop music today is defined by an enormous variety. There is something for everyone. The Roots have been thrilling friends of virtuoso live bands for over 20 years. Old warhorses from the 1980s prove that there is no age limit for good rhymes. Exceptional artists like Pharoahe Monch or Homeboy Sandman connect generations thanks to intelligent content and clever wordplay. Many ambitious musicians also hold up the flag of German, French or British rap. There are no limits to the raps: from abstract lyricism to street prose to eloquent storytelling, everything is on offer. And more and more musical styles are influencing the world of hip hop today.

Hip Hop at HHV: the full range from A to Z

In order to do justice to Hip Hop with all its faces, we have put together a rich programme. This includes classics as well as novelties from young talents. Major productions are on the programme, but also underground releases produced in very small editions. US hip hop, German hip hop, UK hip hop and hip hop from France are represented. As well as spoken word from exotic countries. Of course, the range of our online shop also includes beats without rhymes. Exclusive releases and bundles give our offer that special spice. As long as it has to do with Hip Hop, Vinyl LPs, CDs or Tapes are always welcome. No matter if it’s an album, an EP or singles.

Hip hop, hip hop or hip hop? Anything that sounds funky is allowed.

Hip hop has never been as diverse as it is today. Labels like Mello Music Group or Redefinition evoke the spirit of the eighties and nineties. They see themselves in the tradition of self-determined record companies like Cold Chillin or Ruthless Records. Chopped Herring Records or Dope Folks have made it their business to dig up old recordings. Progressive styles of hip hop music find a home on independent labels like Stones Throw. German rap has grown up and shaken off the regional barrier. And instrumental hip hop has also played an increasingly important role in the last ten years. Not least thanks to our dear colleagues from Project: Mooncircle, who have pushed this direction massively. We have made it our task to do justice to all these facets of hip hop with our offer. From the classic to the absolute insider tip, we offer everything that has to do with eloquent rhymes or innovative beats. And with our HHV Label, we give established and up-and-coming artists the opportunity to present themselves.
