What do we hold on to from our past? What must we let go of to truly move forward? Waxahatchee's Katie Crutchfield spent much of 2018 reckoning with these questions and revisiting her roots for answers. The result is Saint Cloud, an intimate journey through the places she's been, filled with the people she's loved. Written immediately in the period following her decision to get sober, the album is an unflinching self-examination. This raw, exposed narrative terrain is aided by a shift in sonic arrangements as well. While her last two records featured the kind of big guitars, well-honed noise, and battering sounds that characterized her Philadelphia scene and strongly influenced a burgeoning new class of singer-songwriters, Saint Cloud strips back those layers to create space for Crutchfield's voice and lyrics. The result is a classic Americana sound with modern touches befitting an artist who has emerged as one of the signature storytellers of her time. Many of the narratives on Saint Cloud concern addiction and the havoc it wreaks on ourselves and our loved ones, as Crutchfield comes to a deeper understanding of love not only for those around her but for herself. This coalesces most clearly on "Fire," which she says was literally written in transit, during a drive over the Mississippi River into West Memphis, and serves as a love song to herself, a paean to moving past shame into a place of unconditional self-acceptance. Over the course of Saint Cloud, which was recorded the summer of 2019 and produced by Brad Cook (Bon Iver), Crutchfield peels back the distortion of electric guitars to create a wider sonic palette than on any previous Waxahatchee album. It is a record filled with nods to classic country, folk-inspired tones, and distinctly modern touches. To bolster her vision, Crutchfield enlisted Bobby Colombo and Bill Lennox, both of the Detroit band Bonny Doon, to serve as backing band on the record, along with Josh Kaufman (Hiss Golden Messenger, Bon Iver) on guitar and keyboards and Nick Kinsey (Kevin Morby) on drums and percussion. Saint Cloud marks the beginning of a journey for Crutchfield, one that sees her leaving behind past vices and the comfortable environs of her Philadelphia scene to head south in search of something new. If on her previous work Crutchfield was out in the storm, she's now firmly in the eye of it, taking stock of her past with a clear perspective and gathering the strength to carry onward.

Waxahatchee, the solo musical project of Katie Crutchfield, is named after a creek not far from her childhood home in Alabama and seems to represent both where she came from and where she’s going. Ivy Tripp drifts confidently from its predecessors and brings forth a more informed and powerful recognition of where Crutchfield has currently found herself. The lament and grieving for her youth seem to have been replaced with control and sheer self-honesty. “My life has changed a lot in the last two years, and it’s been hard for me to process my feelings other than by writing songs,” says Crutchfield. “I think a running theme [of Ivy Tripp] is steadying yourself on shaky ground and reminding yourself that you have control in situations that seem overwhelming, or just being cognizant in moments of deep confusion or sadness, and learning to really feel emotions and to grow from that.”

Recorded and engineered by Kyle Gilbride of Wherever Audio at Crutchfield’s home on New York’s Long Island—with drums recorded in the gym of a local elementary school—Ivy Tripp presents a more developed and aged version of Waxahatchee. “The title Ivy Tripp is really just a term I made up for directionless-ness, specifically of the 20-something, 30-something, 40-something of today, lacking regard for the complaisant life path of our parents and grandparents. I have thought of it like this: [Waxahatchee’s last album] Cerulean Salt is a solid and Ivy Tripp is a gas.”

It is universally agreed that New Zealand's Wax Chattels are a must-see live act; their hypnotically sinister debut captured this perfectly. Released in 2018 and supported by relentless touring, the eponymous album reached #7 on the New Zealand Album Charts, and release week saw the title feature as #1 in Rough Trade's Top 20 New Releases. Tastemakers like NPR and A.V. Club came on as early champions. The album's success at home and abroad led to the well-deserved nomination of Best Alternative Artist at the 2018 New Zealand Music Awards, as well as the band's inclusion in the coveted shortlist of finalists for the Taite Music Prize and Auckland Live Best Independent Debut Award. After a knock-out entrée, the anticipation that surrounds their sophomore album, "Clot", is immense. Much like their debut, the writing process for "Clot" took the best part of a year. While some songs were written on the road, the bulk of the album was workshopped throughout 2019 across bedrooms and storage containers. Demos were fine-tuned before recording engineer James Goldsmith (Aldous Harding, Mermaidens) stepped in. The band maintained the use of only the barest of ingredients - bass guitar, keyboard, and a two-piece drum kit - but spent more time experimenting with and finding new sounds. They wanted to maintain the same live element, but, this time, heavier - for which they enlisted the help of mixing engineer, and fellow noise-maker, Ben Greenberg (Uniform, Destruction Unit, The Men). The keyboards are thicker, the bass more intense. A marked step-up, this new record keeps the visceral energy of the debut, only this time they dig deeper into cathartic noise.

Washed Out is Atlanta-based producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Ernest Greene. Over three enchanting, critically-lauded albums and an EP, his music has proved both transportive and visual, each release inviting listeners into immersive, self-contained universes. With Purple Noon, his fourth album, and his return to Sub Pop, he delivers the most accessible Washed Out creation to date. Life of Leisure, Washed Out's 2009 debut EP, set the bar for the Chillwave era, shimmering in a warm haze of off-the-cuff Polaroids and pre-IG filters. Within and Without, his 2011 full-length debut on Sub Pop, morphed into nocturnal, icy synth-pop and embraced provocative imagery. 2013's Paracosm was Greene's take on psychedelia, with a full live band and kaleidoscopic light show, and saw him playing to the largest audiences of his career. The sample-heavy Mister Mellow (2017, Stone's Throw) delivered a 360 audio/visual experience, with cut-n-paste and hand-drawn animation to match the hip-hop influences throughout the album. With each release, Greene has approached his evolving project with meticulous detail and a steadfast vision. For Purple Noon, Greene again wrote, recorded, and produced the entirety of the album, with mixing handled by frequent collaborator Ben H. Allen (Paracosm, Within and Without). Production of the album followed a brief stint of writing for other artists (most notably Sudan Archives) which enabled Greene to explore genres like R&B and modern pop. These brighter, more robust sounds made their way into the songs of Purple Noon and mark a new chapter for Greene as a producer and songwriter. The vocals are front and center, tempos are slower, beats bolder, and there's a more comprehensive depth of dynamics. One can hear the luxuriousness of Sade, the sonic bombast of Phil Collins, and the lush atmosphere of the great Balearic beat classics. Mediterranean coastlines inspired Purple Noon, and Greene pays tribute to the region's distinct island culture - all rugged elegance and old-world charm - and uses it as a backdrop to tell stories of passion, love, and loss (Purple Noon's title comes from the 1960 film directed by Rene Clement and based on the novel The Talented Mister Ripley by Patricia Highsmith). Much like romantic Hollywood epics, the melodrama throughout is strong: a serendipitous first meeting in "Too Late"; a passionate love affair in "Paralyzed"; disintegration of a relationship in "Time to Walk Away"; a reunion with a lost love in "Game of Chance." Purple Noon adds a layer of emotional intensity to the escapism of Washed Out's oeuvre, taking the music to dazzling new heights.

It’s harsh techno, slow, with vivid images, lot’s of tension and bleak atmospheres. All titles are in Italian because this story is part of the history of Italy.

Guitarist Wall Matthews is the surviving member of experimental '70s collective, Entourage. Sampled by Four Tet, their name whispered in reverence through the decades, Entourage forged bold musical ideas on their two rare ’70s Folkways LPs. Tompkins Square released Ceremony of Dreams: Studio Sessions and Outtakes, 1972-1977, in 2017 to wide acclaim. Vivian Copeland was a budding young singer who was brought to the Poindexter Brothers attention by her husband. Vivian was to record several Poindexter compositions beginning with “I Don’t Care What He’s Done “ and “So Nice I Had To Kiss You Twice” which paired together gained a 45 release on the Bell distributed Amy (577) label in 1967. A further three 45 releases by Vivian would appear on Jeff Moore’s D’oro label. Firstly the now highly sought after “Chaos (In my Heart) b/w “Cushion The Blow (D’oro 1002) in 1968. Secondly A cover version of Maxine Brown’s “Oh, No Not My Baby b/w I Don’t Care” (D’oro 1006) another Poindexter song, and finally a version of the Billy Terrell and Ray Dahrouge penned song “He Knows My Key (Is Always In The Mailbox) b/w So Nice I Had To Kiss You Twice” there are two releases of this 45, the local D’oro release on a gold label and a subsequent blue label release which was distributed by Atlantic Records.
The Poindexter Brothers, Richard and Robert where raised in the city of Newport News, Virginia. Both brothers had been members of different high school groups, Robert the eldest, sang with The Swans and then ‘The Silvermoon quintet’ before joining the U.S Navy. While Richard performed as a member of ‘ The Rocketters’ and then later ‘The Gems’. Richard did travel to New York during 1963 with The Gem’s to appear at the renowned Apollo Theatre, where upon he was reunited with his brother. Robert, who following his discharge from the service had made the Big Apple his home.
Following the Apollo gig Richard returned home to Virginia before permanently joining his brother in New York during 1964. Richard leaving his wife and children behind vowing to send for then as soon as he scored a hit record, something he felt would happen in a matter of a few months. Following a three wait Richard was finally reunited with his family due to the success of Linda Jones’s 1967 hit “Hypnotized” which the Poindexter’s co-wrote. Following every high there usually comes a low (or two) so during 1969 and again being short of money the brothers decided to start their own production company choosing the very apt label name “Win Or Lose” the label’s first release was the brothers self produced, performed and co-written song with Jackie Members (Robert’s wife) “What I Did In The Street (I Should’ve Done At Home)”a very clever and intricate duet by the brothers with musical accompaniment provided by a group of local Bronx musicians, The Mapasiveyo Band. The b-side of the 45 is a cover version of the Johnny Ace Duke label standard “Never Let Me Go”. sadly this 45 fell by the wayside (although the song was latter covered by Florida artist Barbara King). ‘Win Or Lose’ Productions did later hit pay dirt through a plethora of Poindexter songs recorded on The Persuaders including the hit record “Thin Line Between Love And Hate” for Atco Records.

Total discography of this terrifying unit hailing from France… V.N.A. (Violent Noise Attack) was the side-project of a crew of friends from the late 80ies French scene formed by members of the Thrash band Nomed, Patrick from the highly missed label “Thrash Records” (that released Exit 13, Carbonized, Sorcery, Sentenced, Vital Remains etc) and local HC bands/zine editors. Their debut demotape “Final execution”, the split 7″ with Agathocles and the song on “1984, the fourth” Comp. LP have been always seen as some of the most intense and devastating expressions of the early short-song Grind/Noisecore era, worshipped by the most deranged noise extremists all over the world. Try to imagine a mix of Sore Throat, Napalm DEATH’s b-side of “Scum” and Fear OF GOD and you get the idea of the brain-drilling mayhem these maniacs were able to deliver, with a studio production that was fairly above the average level of the period. Originally self-released in 2017, extreme progressive metallers VINTERSEA's “The Gravity of Fall” was hailed by No Clean Singing as “dynamic and genre-bending!” The album – which has never been offered on vinyl until now – was recorded by Justin Phelps (The Mars Volta, Joe Satriani) and mixed by Evan Sammons (Last Chance To Reason). As a special added bonus, the 2LP pressing of “The Gravity of Fall” will also include VINTERSEA's five-track debut EP 'Constellations' which was originally released in 2014 when the band was known as Asterion. A download code for those songs will be included with the CD. Both formats will include expanded packaging and updated layouts with lyrics, photos and more.
