Limited Black vinyl repress (500 copies)!The lead singer and main songwriter of Cindy, Karina Gill, started the group after picking up a guitar and singing for the first time in 2016. The project went on to release an eponymous, self-produced debut album in 2018. Returning the same rhythm section and adding a dedicated keyboardist, Cindy's second album, Free Advice, showcases the group's unusual amalgam of indie pop and dedicated slowcore inspirations. The 11-track, 36-minute set goes by quickly but also languidly with mostly plodding tempos alongside vocals that come across like half-spoken, distracted thoughts. At the same time, many of the band's tunes have the hooks and slogans of classic indie pop -- if accidentally played at a too-slow rpm. Opening track "Discount Lawyer," for instance, features churning guitar and a rhythmically syncopated melody that delivers lines like "You sound tonight/Like a discount lawyer/Talk is cheap/You can trust me on that/'Cause the bill when it comes/It's got my name on it" as if underwater. The singer/guitarist is also joined on the song by humming keys, a spare tambourine or hi-hat, and measure-marking bass drum that occasionally expands to full, muffled kit. Much of the album continues in kind -- subtly catchy and half asleep -- with exceptions coming in the form of tracks like the brisk and fuzzy "Wrong Answer," which embraces a hazy, uptempo punk, and the strummy, shaker-accompanied "Falcon Heavy." Standout entry "A Song in French" falls somewhere in between those and the rest, with its midtempo wistfulness and Casio-type keyboard line clearly indicating heartbreak for those who can't translate. Attractively gloomy and ramshackle, Free Advice's reticent pop disarms much more often than not. - allmusic.com

There are various reasons why it took so long to realize a record together… but here we are… and this is how I imagined it and what I had hoped for… Circles Bros is Wim Lecluyse. Originally from The Netherlands but living in Belgium now for many years. He has been making and releasing his music since 2002… amongst others on his excellent Morc Records label. With his music Circle Bros is submerging you with hypnotic lo-fi ambient and drone music with a folklorish feeling and a psychedelic touch… His work has been shifting from more song based to ambient like pieces… or a perfect blending of that… “Waves/Peaks” came into existence when Circles Bros sent me a proposal for an album… but instead of releasing the complete album I proposed to make a record out of the two long mersmerizing tracks which were part of the selection he sent me… when in the dialogue about this the working title of one of these tracks turned out to be “Vrystaete” I knew for sure this was the right way for a Circle Bros record on Vrystaete… These two long tracks with a minimal structure are created with minimal means and minimal post-production… the tracks evolved out of shorter pieces and are “stretched” creating this dreamy and otherworldly vibe… This is music to sit back to and get into and let it come over you and flow with it… Music to experience and not talk about to much…

Haley Fohr, besser bekannt unter ihrem Künstlernamen Circuit des Yeux, gehört sicherlich zu den spannendsten und schillerndsten Künstlerinnen der amerikanischen Avantgarde-Musikszene. Sie lebt in Chicago, einer Stadt mit besonders fruchtbarem Boden für eigenwillige Sounds mit Ecken und Kanten. Ihr neues heißt Album „-io“ und erscheint bei Matador Records. Noch bevor die Pandemie ihren seltsamen und düsteren Schleier über die Welt legte, fing Fohr an, Songs für ihr sechstes Album zu schreiben. Zu dieser Zeit verarbeitete sie einen persönlichen Verlust, der sie aus der Bahn warf und die Arbeit am neuen Album fast unmöglich machte. Sie litt unter einer akuten Schreibblockade - und dann kam die Pandemie, die alles noch viel schwerer machen sollte. Viele Songs auf „-io“ handeln vom Zerfall der Welt, die unter der Klimakatastrophe zu zerbrechen droht. Dazu passt die klaustrophobische wie dramatische Grundstimmung des Albums. Grollende Klaviersounds treffen hier auf apokalyptisch klingende Streicherarrangements – das letzte Gefecht. Sämtliche Songs entstanden bei ihr zuhause am Computer, was ein hohes Abstraktionsvermögen von der Künstlerin verlangte, schließlich hatte sie diese für ein 23-köpfiges Orchester geschrieben. „-io“ ist die aufwändigste und komplexeste Produktion von Circuit Des Yeux bis dato, die am Ende fast an der Umsetzung zu scheitern drohte. Aufgrund von COVID-Beschränkungen konnte Fohr nur mit sechs anderen Musikern gleichzeitig im Studio aufnehmen. Sie und ihre Mitstreiter, 13 renommierte Musiker aus Chicagos Jazz-, Klassik- und Experimental-Szene, mussten „-io“ schließlich Schicht für Schicht aufbauen. Die ganze Arbeit und der Kampf gegen die inneren Dämonen hat sich gelohnt: das neue Circuit De Yeux Werk fühlt sich wie ein künstlerischer Neustart an. „-io“ ist ein Album, das nicht nur von der großen und markerschütternden Stimme der Künstlerin lebt, sondern auch von den fantastischen Arrangements und den raumfüllenden Songs. ‘Camargue’ gets a fresh treatment on Drumcode, as a handful of techno’s finest give new life to an R&S classic - with six mixes from the likes of Enrico Sangiuliano, Adam Beyer and Layton Giordani, Maceo Plex and Keith Carnal spread across two EP's.
Coming from the studio of CJ Bolland and Portuguese journeyman The Advent, the track was born out of a golden age of Belgium dance music and first released in 1992. It stands as one of the most treasured pieces of vinyl in Adam Beyer’s collection and this six-part compilation of remixes and remakes marks a highpoint in Drumcode’s history.
For part two, Enrico Sangiuliano delivers a trademark cosmic rework underlined by tribal bass stabs and twisted synth lines to accompany the famous riff. It’s an outstanding remake that’s already a big summer favourite for the Drumcode crew.
On the B side, Adam Beyer and Layton Giordani unleash their own groove-injected, future-focused adaption, all the while never losing sight of the misty-eyed spirit of the original. Rounding out the package The Advent drops his own fresh version, a whip-smart cut that chops and changes between pounding drums, dreamy synth interludes and warbled effects.

Bloodless is the new album by Los Angeles-based musician and writer Claire Cronin. Nearly four years and a number of solo projects later, Detroit’s Clear Soul Forces are back with their most impressive release to date. Still is what happens when four proven artists continue to hone their craft and find their collective flow. At 11 tracks deep, this album eschews trends and instead provides timeless, straight-up dope Hip-Hop.

Speaking on why Still sounds so organic and cohesively produced, group member Noveliss says, “Everyone’s growth has made the creative process easier.” He adds that CSF may have been a team before, but each member had to prove himself individually. “Now, we and the world know what’s up, and it’s all about bouncing off each other and being a unit on every song.”

That sense of true teamwork and partnership is heard and felt on each track, from the neck-snapping opening track “Blaow (feat. DJ Odilon)” through to album closer “Don’t Stop” that serves up a wild burner-to-banger beat-switch. Other instant highlights include “Hit Me Now,” which Noveless says features “all of the random things that describe CSF,” and L.A.Z.’s favorite track “They Shootin’,” which is also the album’s lead single.

Those tracks, and the majority of the album, were produced by rapper-producer Ilajide, who complements his CSF brothers with beats primed for verses bursting with clever bravado, video game references, and head-spinning wordplay. Still is golden era Boom bap for the modern age, and it’s delivered through a lens that’s wholly unique to CSF. It’s also one of integrity, because there’s no fluff or superficial window dressing here—simply some of the best hip-hop you’ll hear this year.

Experimental hip-hop group Clipping's "The Deep" is a dark sci-fi tale about the underwater-dwelling descendants of African women thrown off slave ships, based on the mythology of Detroit electronic group Drexciya. The song was originally commissioned for a This American Life about Afrofuturism in 2017. The track earned Clipping a nomination for a 2018 Hugo award, and the band constructed a sound installation based on "The Deep" at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. This release comes on the heels of the November 5th release of The Deep, a novella by Rivers Solomon (with Clipping credited as co-authors) inspired by the title track and published by Saga Press. The vinyl and digital versions include two otherwise-unreleased extra tracks - including "Aquacode Databreaks," which features Shabazz Palaces - and the vinyl edition includes instrumental versions of all three tracks.
