Michael Mayer albums don’t come round too often, which is one of many reasons why his fourth collection, The Floor Is Lava, is a genuine event. It’s been eight years since his last one, the collaborative & released on !K7; its predecessors, Mantasy (2012) and Touch (2004), took their sweet time, too. It’s no real surprise, given the many hats Mayer wears – globetrotting DJ, revered remixer, inveterate collaborator, and boss of both Kompakt and Imara – that his solo productions are relatively sparing. But this also speaks to their quality: Mayer’s name on a record sleeve is a sign of quality, of music that’s both looking to the future and calling back to the past, that balances the imperatives of the dancefloor and the loungeroom, that’s as exploratory as it is functional.

On The Floor Is Lava, Mayer seems to be taking the temperature of both the music that surrounds him (past and present), and the ideas of the industry he works within. There’s that iconic album title, for a start. “The album’s mindset,” he says, reflecting on those four words together. For Mayer, it’s partly a critique of the way the industry boxes in both producer and listener, focuses them on genre, on market, on the next new thing: “Being a free minded spirit that transcends genres has become an uphill battle.” A battle worth fighting, though, and with The Floor Is Lava, the result is an album that’s varied, quixotic, idiosyncratic, charming, and deeply, addictively listenable.

Throughout, Mayer finds thrills in exploration and juxtaposition, allowing unexpected things to blossom and giving them their life, their platform, throwing the listener exciting curveballs: “It’s a DJ album by a DJ that’s easily bored.” Either easily bored, or endlessly curious, The Floor Is Lava is rich with ideas. It opens with “The Problem”, which looks back to look forward, embracing the rickety way early house productions threw samples together with gleeful abandon. Mayer mentions Pal Joey, and the scene around Rockers Hi-Fi and their Different Drummer imprint, as reference points, and you can hear that freewheeling spirit throughout.

It’s followed by “Vagus”, a slinky, sensual minimal house number that Mayer describes as his “musical catnip”. The flow of these two opening cuts defines the dynamic of The Floor Is Lava, defining the dialectical drive at its core: thesis and antithesis leads to synthesis, but with a welcome prickliness that means you’re always excited, always engaged. It’s also productive in the way it derives energy from rubbing genres and sounds against each other, in unexpected ways, for maximum musical frisson. There’s psychedelic techno on “Feuerstuhl”, more minimal techno with “Ardor” (Mayer mentions ‘Immer 1’ era 90s minimal as inspiration), slippery, Shepard-tone breakbeat through “Sycophant”, a lovely, lush vocal turn on the poppy “The Solution”.

The album closes with the melancholy “Süßer Schlaf”, where Mayer sets a poem by Goethe to one of his most haunted, moving pieces of music yet, in an abstract tribute to a lost friend. It’s one of the most affecting moments on The Floor Is Lava. There’s also an update on 2020’s wild Brainwave Technology EP, with the surrealist glitter-stomp of “Brainwave 2.0” (check out those handclaps!),where Mayer’s thinking about the socio-political precipice of the now: “I’m reading with great interest about this whole complex of how humanity is about to cross so many lines and the implications that the resulting financial and educational inequality will bring.”

That’s The Floor Is Lava: then and now, brainwaves and nerve structures, problems and solutions, genres on fire; the real, the unreal, and the surreal. An album for the easily bored and the endlessly curious. Mayer has the last word, telling us all you need to know about the album’s spirit: “Burning for the cause, being zealous, being addicted to the heat of the night, the exuberant powers of music.”

Roberto Cacciapaglia is an Italian composer and pianist who started out in the fertile Milan avant-garde scene of the 1970s, which included Franco Battiato, Giusto Pio, Lino Capra Vaccina, Francesco Messina, among others. After studying at the conservatory, he worked at RAI's Studio of Musical Phonology – an electronic music laboratory similar to Ndr/wdr in Germany, Grm/ircam in France or BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

Sonanze (Sonatas) is Cacciapaglia's debut album, a monumental work that was recorded over a two-year period and released in 1975 via seminal German label Die Kosmischen Kuriere (Ohr). While a "sonata" is traditionally performed by easily distinguishable instrumentalists (often soloist and accompaniment) and with repeated structural themes, Cacciapaglia flips this hierarchical form on its head – blending harpsichord, strings, brass and analog synths to create ambient mini-soundtracks.

As the composer writes in the original sleeve notes, "I am aware, unfortunately, that I am a few millennia late in how I would like music to be understood, which today I find diluted in its primary powers, in an era that is destructive of essential values. Precisely for this reason, I want to search for it in depth and not on the surface, perhaps alternating the knob of a synthesizer with a marranzano (mouth harp)."

Mixed in quadrophonic surround-sound under the auspices of Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser (celebrated producer of Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel), Sonanze remains on the fringe of Kosmische realms. Each movement explores hypnotic rhythms, intuitive arrangements, musique concrète techniques and a pure psychedelic awakening.

This remaster arrives housed in a handsome gatefold sleeve, and by way of bonus tracks also features several Postcard single A and B sides including Radio Drill Time and Chance Meeting. "When I was writing "Ballyturk"," says director Enda Walsh, "I listened to a lot of Teho"s scores. The music he created for "Music for Wilder Mann" captured me and pushed me into the mysterious heart of "Ballyturk"". So, like kindred souls, working on the same wavelength, they collaborated on the score for the opera, which, after its presentation at the Galway Festival, premiered at London"s National Theatre from 11 September to 10 October (all dates sold out!). Teho Teardo"s album, recorded between Rome and London, comes with the eponymous title of Walsh"s work, and features valuable collaborations, including one with Joe Lally (Fugazi) and Lori Goldston, Nirvana"s cellist. Also on vocals are Mikel Murfi and Cillian Murphy (Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Breakfast on Pluto, Red Eye, In Time, Peaky Blinders, etc.). "I think Teho"s music", Walsh continues, "reveals the soul of the characters as only great music can. It was my most beautiful collaboration - the beauty of this work - that came through in these tracks". Enda Walsh is one of the most acclaimed screenwriters and directors of the moment. “Le Foto Proibite di una Signora Perbene” (Forbidden Photos of a Lady above Suspicion) is a 1970 giallo film directed by Luciano Ercoli ("La Morte Accarezza a Mezzanotte" and "La Polizia ha le Mani Legate" are probably his most popular cult works among fans of the thriller / police genre) starring the German-born actress Dagmar Lassander. Yet another soundtrack that remained unpublished for decades and rediscovered only at the end of the 90s, “Le Foto Proibite…” is a very varied work in which Ennio Morricone, as usual, manages to adapt his scores to light-hearted (“Allegretto per Signora”, “Intermezzino Pop”, “Secondo Intermezzino Pop”), romantic (“Le Foto Proibite di una Signora Per Bene”, “Amore come Dolore”, “Quelle Foto”) and hectic moments (“Qui ci Scappa il Morto”, “Bella, Cara, Dolce, Buona Mogliettina Per Bene”, “Caduta nel’Inconscio”, “Nel Vuoto”) that the movie consists of. To say that the vinyl release of Ostraaly's Misery Guests has overcome monumental challenges isn't hyperbole, but fact. The label had been in cahoots with principal band members Katharine Daly & Leonie Brialey as far back as the Luggs Cd-r in 2016. Initially this release was to see vinyl action, but a series of setbacks prevented that from happening & when we next caught up w/each other it was 2019. Ostraaly was now a full on unit & a new set of tracks entitled Misery Guests was slated for a cassette issue by the estimable Tenth Court label. Katharine was quite keen for Siltbreeze to release it on vinyl & both sides set about to make it happen. Tenth Court released the cassette in Jan of 2020, vinyl to follow. However, a series of mechanical issues-a new track was added, artwork needed to be revamped-reared up & by the time it was off to press, Covid slammed shut the world. Diligence was the key here, as was hope. And as the world began to come out of its pandemic cocoon sometime in 2021, the project was on once more. But in the midst of retrieving new masters & artwork, Katharine Daly passed away unexpectedly, & that shock naturally put everything into what seemed to be a perpetual limbo. The years passed, but never the desire to see this album fulfilled. It was through the tenacity of the surviving band members, relocating & getting Siltbreeze the new masters & jacket art, that this LP finally sees the light of day as it was meant to some 5 years prior.

What you'll find within the grooves of Misery Guests is a band assuredly zoned into what they're laying down. It woozily rollicks in a way that's fetchingly out of step & swings in a rural-like, rough hewn manner that's unimpeachable. To say nothing of the out-of-time folk ruggedness stitched in, which makes these tracks seem almost plucked out of some mid-70's time warp that contemporary alt/retro bands could only dream of conceiving. And while its existence will forever remain bittersweet that Daly isn't here to embrace its ultimate fruition, her spirit is forever locked into every nuance of this stone-cold masterpiece. Dedicated to the memory of Katharine Daly & all who sailed w/her.

Less than six months after Gnod rewired their sound for the umpteenth time, with the release of deliciously detailed deep listener Spot Land, they’re back with another album and a whole new approach. Inner Fucking Peace comprises eight tracks for voice and electronics – varied in style but connected in feeling and recorded as a trio. Chris Haslam and Paddy Shine, the two ever-present members in the Gnod lineup since their first stirrings in mid-2000s Salford, are completed by Portuguese vocalist MC Sissi. Inner Fucking Peace is the first time MC Sissi, or Cecilia de Fatima dos Santos, a very well known name in Portuguese experimental circles has recorded with Gnod. From the minimalist tuned percussion of ‘Stop’, to the shuffling beats and spaced-out synth on ‘Perde-Te Onde Quiseres’, to ‘Get Out’ and its ominous electronics and crashing industrial drums (combined with Sissi’s irate-sounding vocal, here Gnod are on a tip that compares to great Bristolian duo and recent touring partners Harrga), to the supremely chopped & screwed woodwind that’s central to ‘Flute Theme’, to ‘Reprise’s hypnotic hand drum workout, to ‘Tea & Eggs’ – ten minutes of reggaeton-goneminimal-synth – to ‘Olivia’, named after Sissi’s niece and the track’s guest vocalist, to ‘Cannela Crematoria’ closing us out and hitting a zenith of gloominess with some more industrial battery folded in…this is a full on Gnod vibe shift that also makes total sense in their infamously extensive discography. With this band enjoying hard-won freedom from release schedule tyranny, they – just like us – don’t know what’s next on the recording agenda, or if there’ll be more Gnod & MC Sissi collab albums, but this is an engrossing introduction to the partnership. In the short term, the trio will be playing some European shows in the autumn, including a slot at Utrecht festival Le Guess Who? in November

Born in 1989 in Bamako, Mali, Nfaly Diakité is a member of the Donsow, Bambara animist hunters from the Mandé region. Tribute to Toumani Koné' is Nfaly Diakité's first solo album, recorded in Bamako in June 2020. With this album, Nfaly wishes to pay tribute to the storyteller and poet Toumani Koné, who throughout his long career as a Donso has been a symbol of courage and honesty. The nine tracks on this solo album leave no room for hesitation. Three instruments (donso ngoni, voice and keregne) transport us into another dimension without ever tiring us. The rhythm is accurate and precise, creating a deep, melodious trance. All the power of a music that belongs not to a single musician, but to a long cultural tradition of which he is the spokesman, is expressed here. The young Nfaly alone succeeds in drawing us into this world without feeling the weight of tradition, only the liberation of a music that sounds all the more contemporary. This album is to be listened to in its entirety as one tight journey between repeated formulas, highlights and moments of rest within the same relentless rhythm.

Caribbean contributions to British arts and culture are profound and everlasting, particularly through the music brought by the Windrush generation. As the first Caribbean settlers stepped foot on the shores of Albion, millions of Brits were introduced to roots music and sound system culture. In the 1970s, along the coast of Southend-On-Sea, the P brothers—enthralled by the legendary sounds of Jah Tubbys, Channel One, and Jah Shaka—immersed themselves in the world of reggae. This deep-rooted passion was soon passed down to their young prodigy, Charlie P, their son and nephew.

Charlie’s musical journey begins with the sounds of Dennis Brown, Hugh Mundell, and Ranking Dread echoing through his family home. From his early stage performances with the Goldmasters Allstars to his involvement in the sound system universe, his foundations are strongly embedded in roots music.

After over a decade of perfecting his craft and earning the title of ‘dub controller’ he now reconnects with his roots through an album that celebrates the essence of pure, introspective, undiluted reggae.

Staying true to the genre’s traditional blueprint, the compositions by Rico O.B.F and Charlie P were meticulously brought to life by a full live band. Recorded at London’s Room-In-The-Sky studio, the credits feature a stellar lineup, including Horseman on drums and Megahbass on bass guitar, delivering a sound that is both fresh and authentically raw.
