Acid Jazz group label Countdown Records is excited to announce the next release in our Mod Classics series – the fantastic, super-hip R&B of North London Group The Bo Street Runners, with an exclusive coupling of their ‘Bo Street Runner’ b/w ‘Baby Never Say Goodbye’. To those of us who grew up on the ’80s mod scene, they are two iconic tracks that filled floors from East London’s Regency Suite to Sneakers in the West.

The Bo Street Runners formed in 1964 and made their name playing at the Railway Hotel in Harrow – the same venue where The Who made their name. They recorded a super rare self funded EP on OAK before signing to Decca after winning the Ready Steady Win! competition. Their debut single was the Bo Diddley inspired ‘Bo Street Runner’ with its frenetic Harmonica.

When this didn’t chart the band’s contract was sold to Columbia who released their final three singles. The pick of these was the jazzy ’Baby Never Say Goodbye’ – which featured Mick Fleetwood on drums, on his way to greater success elsewhere.

Presented in the new Countdown Mod Classics monochrome geometric housebag and pressed on white vinyl. Limited to 500 copies.

It's a pleasure, a labour of love and a yearly highlight to present a new volume of the Mr Bongo Record Club series. In this collection, we have curated new finds alongside old, treasured tracks that hold a special place in our hearts, selecting music inspiring us from the Brazilian, Latin, soul, disco, gospel, cosmic, dancehall and downtempo genres. We have chosen a diverse array of artists, including Os Panteras from Brazil, stomping underground disco by Claude Jay, the Danish soul sounds of Gitte & Inger and the gospel excellence of Truth & Devotion, to name a few.

Most of the selections in this volume are older vintage productions, however, there is one very special contemporary production, recorded exclusively for Mr Bongo Record Club 7. For ‘Spring Has Sprung’, we linked three of our cherished musical family together; the legendary cult artist Asha Puthli, the wonderous band Soyuz and Swedish maestro Sven Wunder. The result, as you’d expect, is completely breathtaking.

Reflecting on Volume 7, it now feels like a record comprised of two themes. Firstly, we have gone quite heavy on the Brazilian selections. This saw us searching further afield and digging into other areas of the endlessly rich Brazilian musical tapestry. The reflection of a more folk / Afro-Brazilian sound than presented in previous volumes in the series, can be heard in the songs of As Sublimes, Romeu Fernandes and Conjunto de Percussão Dora Pinto. The second theme is a representation of the tracks that we have been playing in our club DJ sets and are aimed more at the dancefloor. Disco tracks such as 'Come Inside' by The Shades of Love and The Duncans' 'Too Damn Hot' have been firmly tested favourites in recent years.

We hope these songs, by the sensational artists on display, inspire you as much as they do us. Music is the gift that keeps giving and there is so much more to learn, find, and share.

dBridge represents a milestone when it comes to UK dance music. Romanias up-and-coming Barac has released a double record on Rareshs Metereze imprint among others, has recently launched his own platform with Moment, and is inarguably one of the top creative minds emerging from the vivid ourown / sunrise scene. The selection of these particular producers is the result of Konrad Black simultaneously considering his past while embracing the future. His affinity for dBridge goes back longer than a decade when Konrad was working for Virus Recordings in London, making dBridge an ideal conduit for the Drum and Bass aesthetic that still courses through both artists veins. Barac represents a new wave of artists whose music exists as a crystal ball depicting an ideal future for techno music on the whole. Together, these top talents present a ppair of fresh interpretations of Blacks darkly aspirational release.

Jimmy Conwell is a big name in Los Angeles soul music, either as a solo singer on 4J, Gemini and Mirwood or as lead singer of the Exits on Gemini and Kapp, the Tripps on Soundville or with Smoked Sugar on Teri De. ‘Let It All Out’ was written in conjunction with his two main producers Len Jewell Smith and Hank Graham, though Jimmy couldn’t remember Hank’s contribution. It is a stunning ballad that was originally overlooked by Northern Soul fans for the stomping 'Too Much' flip.

A similar situation has occurred with his Kapp 45, the mid-tempo ‘Another Sundown In Watts’ attracting much of the attention and the superb ‘I’m So Glad’ ballad only recently picking up deserved admirers.

Both sides of our 45 will go down well in the Lowrider stronghold of Conwell’s native city. No coincidence, I’m sure.

Afterhours. continues its quest for exquisitely crafted minimal dance music and welcomes young talent Aron for its seventh release. "Limbic" features three original dancefloor cuts and a groove-focused remix by Arno, Pressure Trax's head honcho.

The "Limbic" EP starts with 'Prawn Repetitions' (a1), immediately locking the listener into a seemingly endless loop of stomping sub-bass, slippery drums, snipped chords and a mantra-like vocal stating "I'm a Shrimp" just enough times to hypnotize. 'Inverse Perspective' (a2) strips down the sonic space to focus on micro/macro rhythms, leaving just enough room for its haunting atmospheric pads to cut through. The track title "Limbic" (b1) is as wacky as it is catchy. Its sound design feels alien, not only in its wobbliness but also in the type of vocal snippets used and overall aesthetic graininess; yet, it remains highly stomping and dancefloor appropriate, with its second part elevated, and humanized, by (very) human melodies. Arno's Remix of "Limbic" (b2) deconstructs its every element, grounding the alien elements into a groove-centered, drum-machine-driven composition that embraces the harmonious aspects of the original without ever losing pace on its (very) insistent bass pattern.

Between the acoustic and the electronic, the four-by-fours and the breakbeat, Aron's tracks are as trippy as they are soulful: dense and detailed tracks with enough forward momentum to keep any room moving.

Ses1 set out what quality electro means for Shipwrec. The first in the series brought together six musicians from far and wide, musicians who journey through the colder edge of their analogue instruments with a clear ear for the floor. Ses2 starts where its predecessor left off. The genre bending Ian Martin opens with the frigid funk of "Metaphysical Travellers." Stripped back, the track is bare in terms of its elements. Despite such meagre ingredients, Martin concocts an engaging and rich work of darkened grooves and sinister undercurrents. o-0._.0-o is the playful pseudonym of acid freetekno enthusiast Owen. His contribution, "Acidrobotik", releases a free and wandering 303 lines that forges a bubbling path through crisp percussion. The flip brings an artist better known for his work in techno. Cliche Morph delves into the clinical side of his palette and emerges with the stunning "Placebo." Balancing alienated and arctic blasts with a thawing warmth, the outcome is pure classic electro. A rising star of machine music follows, Fleck E.S.C. A dirty bassline is further sullied by layers of gritty distortion and glitched vocals in this re-wired work of ghetto. A legend of electronics closes, Kirill Junolainen. Under his lauded Konerytmi moniker, this synthesiser shapeshifter delivers "Kuva Alkio." Stuttering bass and tight drums are the foundation from which sci-fi inspirations take hold, sailing strings tethered by a terse snare as Ses2 is brought to a triumphal close.

TrioRox is a project born from the meeting of three protagonists of the Italian music scene (and not only): pianist Giovanni Guidi, bassist Joe Rehmer and electronic musician DJ Rocca (Luca Roccatagliati). Three characters who boast an eclectic and consistent curriculum. Guidi, enfant prodige of Jazz piano, has published several albums for the prestigious ECM label, and has collaborated with the best jazz and electronic musicians, from Enrico Rava to Matthew Herbert, from Joe Lovano to Ricardo Villalobos. Joe Rehmer, an American transplanted to Italy, is one of the most sought-after bass players, sharing stages and recording studios together with authorities such as Bob Mintzer, James Moody and Danny Gottlieb. DJ Rocca is a DJ and musician active since the nineties, and boasts numerous albums, singles and remixes with, and for key protagonists of the alternative dance scene (Andrew Weatherall, Dimitri From Paris and Howie B), as well as a militancy in the jazz scene with several albums together with Franco D’Andrea. The music that the trio proposes is a mix of electronic, dance, Jazz and pop, with groove impulses in the field of house and techno music, without neglecting mixes between electro, classical and minimalism. A melting pot of styles between Keith Jarrett and Carl Craig. Album to be released by Irma Records in October 2024, with guests Luigi Di Nunzio, Gianluca Petrella, Dan Kinzelman and Jacopo Fagioli. “Moods” is the debut album of Triorox that represents the photograph of the ‘Here and Now’. All the music was born from a studio session that lasted a few days, in which the mood of the three musicians gave the album its sound imprint. What came out of it became incandescent material to elaborate the musical flow of the entire work, which had three different phases. The first, in which the tracks were born from the recordings, some developed as creations with a common denominator (the three moments of Mood), some as thematic suggestions (Angels, Corea and Next To Canada), and others as a stylistic challenge (the techno of Space Rain, or the drum and bass of Sax & The City). The second phase, where the compositions were subjected to the test of live concerts, in which it was understood how the tracks could be better arranged, optimizing them and keeping the best ones. The last phase was the choice and insertion of the guests, reasoning according to the type of suggestion that we wanted to give to the specific song. So we gave free rein to Luigi Di Nunzio, who also participated in phase two, playing with us on stage on some occasions. In the same way, Gianluca Petrella chose the piece where he felt most at ease, also contributing to the arrangement. Dan Kinzelman, a historic collaborator of both Guidi and Rehmer, was included because we wanted his bass clarinet in a specific suggestive situation. Finally, we wanted Jacopo Fagioli (the Tuscan reincarnation of Don Cherry), we wanted him in a specific episode of Mood, for his particular style, impeccable in determining the mood that the piece needed.

Charles Mingus's music is, and will remain, in the hearts and ears of all Jazz lovers, serving to inspire generations of musicians. Mingus, besides being a magnificent double bassist, was also a prolific composer, arranger, pianist, and band leader of several historic ensembles. His groups, ranging from trios to big bands, have traversed and influenced various stylistic periods from the 1950s to the 1970s. Undoubtedly, Mingus, alongside Duke Ellington, was one of the most important composers of the 20th century; in his music, one can hear the roots of Blues, echoes of Gospel, Swing, Bebop, Soul Jazz, and even Free and avant-garde music. It is for this reason that his music can almost be considered an encyclopedic portrait of Jazz history and can still be played today without appearing dated, instead providing new insights and inspiration. From these considerations arises my desire to reinterpret Mingus's repertoire, influenced by our individual experiences as musicians. In this recording, in addition to Mingus's compositions, two original compositions inspired by or closely related to Mingus's musical style are performed. The group originates from the musical collaboration of over thirty years between myself, pianist Massimo Colombo, and saxophonist Tino Tracanna, and is complemented by saxophonist Gianni Azzali, drummer Tommy Bradascio, and two new young talents of Italian Jazz: trombonist Andrea Andreoli and trumpeter Daniele Nocella. One day, when he was already very ill, Charles Mingus said to his wife Sue: "You know, I've already had a body. Next time I want to be a star. I want to shine all night." The strength of the brass, great accomplices of Labess, shines with Christine Roch on tenor, baritone saxophone, and clarinet, and Yvan Djaouti on trumpet. This 5th album is marked by the return of a younger brother from Montreal, Antero Sono-Sinnott aka Tito, whose electric guitar brings a subtly rock hue that blends perfectly with Benoît Haezbrouck's bass. Up above, Loran Bozic's violin flutters like a bird. On drums, cajón, and percussion, Tarek Maaroufi taps directly into the pulse of Labess. The rhythms of the Caribbean and Cape Verdean islands breeze through this journey, with djembes making their debut appearance. Supported by his group, Nedjim throws himself wholeheartedly, with his voice and guitar, into the magic of live performance. Together, they cross the doors of the troglodyte studio Le Pressoir, carved into the rock near Tours, to take on the challenge of bottling the living. The charm works, thanks to the talents of François Vachon and Pec (Arnaud Dervaux) who recorded and mixed the album.7 songs of exile, war, and loveFreedom is a luxury, grumbles the electric guitar in the eponymous title Dima Libre, "always free" in Arabic. A slam verse evokes the journey from Algeria to Canada. Tinged with exile and love, mirroring Nedjim Bouizzoul's life, the album musically dialogues between continents. It also expresses the bitter and ever-present realization of misunderstood wars. La guerre, a song co-written with Gaby Devilleneuve, raises the grave indifference towards wars considered foreign. "The memory of a day that children wait for remains, a dream that hasn't had its time," sings Nedjim. In the title Palestina, the voice rises in Algerian Arabic, Hebrew, and Spanish to sing of universal possibilities beyond this 75-year-long tragedy. The verse is inspired by the Colombian song "En Barranquilla Me Quedo" by Joe Arroyo. All we are saying now, a nod to John Lennon, is a call for peace and freedom for the African continent. Rosa que linda eres is marked by Nedjim's Colombian experience. The Haitian and Colombian origin piece converses with chaâbi to celebrate the beauty of a disappointed love. The traditional text Kifech Hilti returns to the roots, the chaâbi of Algiers neighborhoods that cradled the artist, in a spiritual quest recolored in pure flamenco and rumba. "What could I do?" he asks. The song Koul Men Chaf Ghzali takes the same Algerian flight. Swelled by the brass, it electrifies with the guitar. Then, the voices rise in a trance.Like a call that resonates well after the last note, the album traverses us with the sincerity of Labess' work, strong from twenty years on the road. A message in a bottle filled with musical and human alchemy that will land at the Olympia on November 14, 2024, where Labess will reunite with their audience, happy and lucky in their freedom.

Jailcell Recipes: Perhaps the last untold chapter in the story of the rapidly-detonating, late 80’s UK Hardcore scene. Often overlooked in favour of their contemporaries, this re-mastered/re-modelled retrospective collection of songs finally puts the record straight, giving them the recognition they deserve. It showcases the band’s importance within that scene and throws light on their unique standpoint and their growth over a 4 year period. This release is not intended as a discography, rather a selected ‘strongest hand’ from between the years 1988 to 1992. It features the definitive line up of Robbie Reid (vocals), Jamie Owen (guitar), Dave Arnold (bass) and Ian Barwick (drums). It's a game of two halves; the faster, straight ahead hardcore stylings make up Side One (practically the entire first album recorded in 1988), whilst the more melodic, mid-tempo material completes the set on the flipside - Robbie's unmistakable vocals being the constant throughout that makes it all work, he provided the band with a unique identity. Side Two closes with previously unreleased studio tracks from 1992 - virtually unheard until now, we believe these final three tracks to be amongst their best. The songs now sound as the band intended all the way back in 1988. Largely down to a relentless run of gigs back in their heyday, Jailcell Recipes gained a strong reputation for being an exciting and energetic ‘live’ hardcore band, playing with Bad Brains, All, Gorilla Biscuits and including tours with Youth Of Today (1989), Green Day (1991), Naked Raygun (1988). It’s the 35th Anniversary of the release of their debut album “Energy In An Empty Tank World” and after all these years, we finally have the recorded output to match the ‘live’ performance!

Squeaking bows and materials stuck between the strings, saturation and percussion of incongruous objects, feverish spinning and psychedelic choruses are the charms of this nuanced trance.Poems, manifestos, dreams or nightmares, it could ultimately be that the songs only speak of reality. Some Dub Stories is a hybrid project combining music and video: it is a live band of four musicians mixing the codes of a powerful dub with soaring melodies, harmonizing electronic and acoustic. The concert is closely linked to a video show that tells us the story of Obaba, the cosmic turtle, at the borders of multiple universes. Back on Earth in a post- apocalyptic atmosphere, Obaba delivers the story of her odyssey.The protagonists of this quartet on stage are: a multi-instrumentalist who juggles between Trumpet, Flugelhorn and Melodica, a Drummer, a Guitarist and finally a Bassist who also controls the machines! The public is then immersed in a unique sound and story, which renews the genre while filling the afficionados of Dub.The members of the group come from various formations having toured around the world: Hubris, Dub Silence, Lamuzgueule... A first album is coming soon and the group is receiving a warm welcome from professionals and are already supported by Take It Easy Agency & Alpine Records (labels). Regarding the live, NMB Booking signed the band in their roster in 2022 and the doors of Château Rouge (Live Venue and artists' residency) are open to them to prepare their first tour. The band is promised to scour the Dub scenes of France and Europe. Discover the stories of the cosmic turtle that comes to life under the pencil strokes of Lucas Roig, graphic artist. An astral journey to discover on stage.With its album « Chapter One » (which will be released during 2023) the Electro-Dub Live Band delivers an ambitious first opus combining a rhythmic Dub with deep bass.
