This is the first vinyl issue of Temple IV, arguably Roy Montgomery’s finest solo album, originally released in 1996 on CD. The original album has been enhanced with two newer tracks that constitute side four of the album. Montgomery states: “The two new tracks recorded in 2018 were about asking the question “Can you step into the same river twice?” Heraclitus said you cannot. I say you can…”

Few recording artists have aligned the quantity and quality of their releases as well as New Zealand singer /guitarist Roy Montgomery has in 1995. Beginning with kranky’s release of the soundtrack for an imaginary film That That Is...Is(Not) by Montgomery’s duo Dissolve early in the year, a series of superb albums and singles have been issued by a variety of labels across the world. Each one of them is a must have. Most recently, the Drunken Fish label released a collection of pastoral drones entitled Scenes From The South Island, singles have appeared on the Roof Bolt and gyttja labels, and further singles are scheduled with Ajax, Siltbreeze and others.

Temple IV is the first solo recording by Roy Montgomery on kranky. The album was recorded by Montgomery on a four-track tape deck and then thickened up with monophonic moog. The tracks on the album are thick with interwoven guitar lines and moog drone, inspired by the Guatemalan rain forests and the mysterious ruins of the temple and ruins Montgomery visited there.

Roy Montgomery spent the past year in New York, Chicago and London before returning to New Zealand. While in the UK he played live with Flying Saucer Attack and collaborated with spoken word performer Kirk Lake. A brief tour across the United States in September saw him performing before enraptured audiences in New York, Boston, Chicago, Detroit and Los Angeles.

The long overdue recognition of Roy Montgomery as a crucial figure in New Zealand’s musical history as a member of The Pin Group, Shallows and Dadamah, is now augmented by his new recordings. Temple IV will serve to extend and deepen that appreciation.

The Fader recently sat down with Maxo to discuss the album, which they described as having "a de fi ant glow, like a bronze statue still standing after an intense tornado." Born Maxamillian Allen, Even God Has A Sense Of Humor fi nds Maxo earnest, full-hearted, and lyrically agile. His delivery punches as he poetically unpacks the trials and blessings that have marked the last three years since Lil Big Man, his stirring and meditative debut album. “Life is always gonna be life-ing,” Maxo says, speaking to the spiritual lessons that inspired this new project and an album process that has revealed to him the many ways in which he’s divinely protected. The album’s striking cover features three casted sculptures of Maxo by legendary NYC-based artist artist John Ahearn, photographed by the rapper’s friend Steven Traylor. The album is newly remastered by the Grammy Award-winning engineer John Baldwin and includes a new interview with Winer, captured by the compilation’s co-producer, acclaimed author and journalist Wyndham Wallace. Off the coast of Cape Cod lies a small uninhabited island called Veckatimest. The island is a physical space, but for the band Grizzly Bear, it is also a state of mind. Veckatimest is the name of the band’s third full-length record, originally released in 2009 on Warp Records. It is a stunning piece of music, one that catapulted what was once frontman Ed Droste’s bedroom project into something far grander and more publicly lauded than the band could’ve ever imagined.

Veckatimest represents a definitive, landmark sort of moment for indie rock. It moved a genre to the thing that was all the rage on blogs, to fertile grounds for pop and rap to reap from. Jay and Bey watching Grizzly Bear at a random show in Brooklyn eventually led to people like Ezra Koenig and Josh Tillman penning a track on Lemonade, and Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek on Beyoncé. Indie music, in other words, isn’t really the same thing that it once was. The summer of 2009, and Grizzly Bear, have a lot to do with that.

Trance Macabre's self-titled debut is a jazz album born in the punk-house basements of Connecticut. Inspired by the ensemble's Hartford roots, this music responds to figures like Jackie McLean and Alice Coltrane and their outcry of speculative musical timbres within pop forms. There’s a palpable sense of energy and enthusiasm from the audience captured on the tapes at this concert as
King Crimson (sharing a European tour with then label band mates Roxy Music)
take to the stage in Fréjus, France, in late Summer, 1982.
With two albums’ worth of material to draw upon (Discipline, Oct 1981& Beat, June 1982) & extensive touring that had already seen the band play concerts
in the UK, Europe, USA & Japan, the live shows - as often with King Crimson –
had a dynamism & punch that simply couldn’t be replicated
in a recording studio. Add a pair of classic KC instrumentals, (Red & Larks’ Tongues in Aspic Part Two),
to that mix & all the ingredients were there for a very special performance.
Recorded initially for a video release, the audio from the concert has, inexplicably, never been issued as a standalone release
Nor has a live album from the 1980s line-up previously appeared on vinyl.
Sheltering Skies presents the complete King Crimson performance across
2LPs pressed on 200gram vinyl or a single CD, both completed with the addition of the recording of ‘The Sheltering Sky’
from the previous night’s concert at Cap d’Agde
The 1980s King Crimson was, in terms of concert performances/ album releases,
still less than a year old when this album was recorded.
The collective decades’ of experience of the individual musicians is funnelled through the enthusiasm & freshness of the
line-up & the newness of the material to produce a special concert recording.
While King Crimson material from this period is always in demand, with the forthcoming US tour by Beat (King Crimson’s
Adrian Belew & Tony Levin, joined by guitarist Steve Vai & Tool drummer Danny Carey), performing the materia
l from that period, there is increased interest in hearing this material as it was originally performed.

THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER Music From The Netflix Original Series By The Newton Brothers. The Fall Of The
House Of Usher is an American Gothic Horror Drama miniseries created by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House,
Hush) and starring an ensemble cast led by Carla Gugino (Gerald’s Game, Sin City), Kate Siegel, Bruce Greenwood, Henry
Thomas, and Rahul Kohli.
Loosely based on various works by the 19th century author Edgar Allan Poe into a single narrative taking place from 1953 to
2023. It recounts the rise to power of Roderick Usher and his
sister Madeline Usher, and the events leading to the deaths of all
six of Roderick’s children.
The series score by Flanagan’s long-time collaborators, The
Newton Brothers, features sweeping and dark orchestral cues
expertly crafted to accompany the gothic, Poe inspired storytelling. While melancholic and brooding, the music is also beautiful and playful at times. Massive orchestral swells are met with
bombastic percussion which then pull the listener into haunting and fright inducing territory.
