"As government legislation, standardised music and bad drugs forced the euphoria of the rave phenomenon into the darkness, a new underground movement emerged – the jungle and drum & bass nexus.

It was the sound of the beating heart of Britain’s multi-cultural urban rave, produced by the children of the Windrush and their closest friends, and distilled via the journey from a Tivoli Gardens soundclash, to the UK’s inner city blues parties and onto jazz-funk all-dayers and soul weekenders.

It was a space that was forged in the hidden edges of urban warehouses and the darkened recesses of clubland’s backrooms; schooled in the swagger of dancehall, the thunder of hardcore, the fury of bebop and the depth charge of dub.

Jungle and drum & bass was like nothing else the world had experienced before – simultaneously black and white, urban and suburban, old skool attitude and new school innovation. A socio-cultural melting pot of early-90s broken Britain seizing the wheel and taking control of the machine.

Originally published in 1997, State of Bass explores the scene’s roots through its social, cultural and musical antecedents and on to its emergence via the debate that surrounded the apparent split between jungle and drum & bass. Drawing on interviews with some of the key figures in the early years State of Bass explores the sonic shifts and splinters of new variants, styles and subgenres as it charts the journey from the early days as the deliberately hidden underground, ignored by the media in favour of the post-rave progressive house scene, to its position as a global phenomenon.

State of Bass: The Origins of Jungle and Drum & Bass extends the original text to include the award of the Mercury Prize to Roni Size & Reprazent for the groundbreaking New Forms album and brings new perspectives to the story of the UK’s most important subterranean urban energy.

"Those who meditate in silence": it is one of the meanings of the Sanskrit word "Muni", a new musical project by Nicola Caleffi, multi-instrumentalist and founder of the Italian band Julie's Haircut. The debut album "Soma" (the sacred drink of the Vedic cult) was born from a day of studio improvisation which also involved Laura Storchi, a Julie's Haircut founding member, Claudio Luppi and Pierluigi Lanzillotta, the latter two engaged in various projects including the psych-rock outfit Pip Carter Lighter Maker. As invigorated by the properties of the Soma itself - the nectar that brings health and immortality - our four “cantors” unleash their minds to give life to an initiatory journey in deep communion with nature. From the thrilling Fourth-World plots of "Drinking At The River Of Light", which hides jazz-veins inspired by the Miles Davis of "He Loved Him Madly" and "In A Silent Way", to the psychedelic drifts of "Spirit Animal ”, in which horn players Silvia Orlandini and Paolo Campani also participate playing their winds, Muni manage to make spaces and silences resonate, transforming music into an imaginary landscape. Among ethno-tribal textures, in which the Bruce Palmer of "The Cycle Is Complete" era resounds, mystical psychedelia and sidereal excursions, also the tracks "Presence By The Fire" and "Corona Borealis" follow one other, closing the circle of a pilgrimage that Muni travel between heaven and earth accompanied by three very dear texts, which attended during the studio sessions: the Bhagavadgītā, the zen poem Shodoka by Yoka Daishi and the poems by Dylan Thomas."Soma" was recorded and mixed by Gabriele Riccioni and is published by Backwards Records on 300 vinyl copies. Peel Dream Magazine Announce details of vinyl pressing of their 8-track Moral Panics EP. Featuring 6 brand new tracks and released on Tough Love Records on Friday 13th November, this follows its digital and lathe cut only release in July. Featuring the original 6 unreleased tracks recorded during the sessions for their recently released second album Agitprop Alterna which was released in April of this year, two further exclusive tracks are added to their vinyl pressing. Talking about the EP, Joe Stevens, the main artistic force behind Peel Dream Magazine said: Moral Panics is an EP featuring unreleased songs from the Agitprop Alterna recording sessions over the course of 2018 and 2019. It's kind of like a sibling to that record as well as the Up and Up EP from 2019. The title comes from Stanley Cohen's Folk Devils and Moral Panics which talks about Mods in England during the 1960s. Cohen talks about how the English press and politicians benefited from vilifying that cultural phenomenon, and I wrote about it in the first track New Culture, as well as Permanent Moral Crisis off the LP. I'm really into everything Mod . . . I think it's something I come back to again and again. These songs definitely create their own vibe but they're still connected to Agitprop Alterna . . ." Peel Dream Magazine is the musical vehicle for NYC's Joe Stevens, who launched the band in 2018 with the critically acclaimed album Modern Meta Physic. The debut was a mysterious, liminal tribute to the hazy end of 90s dream-pop a masterful mix of first-class songwriting precision and train-window sonic impressionism. Stevens played all the parts on Modern Meta Physic himself, blending live and sampled sounds into uniquely identifiable and abstractly psychedelic soundscapes. The album struck a perfect balance between DIY bedroom pop auteurism and studio wizaJoe Stevens, the rdry, and duly found its place on numerous Best of 2018 lists. Where the creation of Modern Meta Physic was a solitary pursuit, Agitprop Alterna found Stevens channelling the collaborative spirit of the band's ever-rotating live incarnation in the studio. He worked with close friend Kelly Winrich to develop new sounds for the project, creating musical snippets that Winrich would mix into the cohering whole. Live band members like vocalist Jo-Anne Hyun (later replaced by Isabella Mingione) and drummer Brian Alvarez would stop by and work their magic on the recordings, laying down parts with trademark exactitude. The resulting music revels in its realness: heavier, more dynamic, and truly the work of a band.

For this special occasion 30drop provides six cuts of futuristic techno but with a ravey approach in a time backspin that brings us back to the 90’s via Sci-Fi, reminding in some way of the early UR records, when Mad Mike and Jeff Mills worked together on the soundtrack of the future. This is our first mini LP with 3 cuts per side. The first cut is Brain reset, the short drone intro soon leads to a relentless groove made of repetitive sequences over a fast groove. Intense and obsessive. Mental Understanding brings more minimalistic ingredients, absence of hi hats, just kick drum and synth lines. Brain effervescence showcases the infamous 90’s hoover sound bringing the rave element and 303 acid lines all merged in a lawless and dense mixture. B side opens with Self awareness, starting with ethereal atmospheres, spiced with resonant bleeps and micro drones in a beat-less exercise. Klapaucjusz brings back the 90’s feeling again with analogue arpeggios and melodies, again over a clean groove in a Detroit oriented number. Closing the release, Knowledge, a space odyssey of strings, abstract synth lines and flotation. “After a banner year that witnessed Lafawndah release her first album Ancestor Boy, the debut of her soundsystem Fara Fara, and further incursions into film, contemporary art and fashion, the ceaseless artist returns with another plot twist: The Fifth Season.

Inspired by her encounter with author NK Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy, Lafawndah both pays homage to and extends further the elemental, emotionally charged myths of Jemisin’s books. These are stories where a broken heart can tear apart a continent. In contrast to the precision- tuned industrial productions of Ancestor Boy, The Fifth Season breathes a different kind of volatility. Inviting a new degree of spontaneity and freedom into her process, Lafawndah’s collaborators - Theon Cross (tuba), Nathaniel Cross (trombone), Valentina Magaletti (percussions), and Nick Weiss (keyboards) - encircle her confrontational character studies with iridescent, cinematic chamber-bass moves.

These are torch songs for when it rains ash, creation ballads for when the earth turns inside out. Ghosts of Art Ensemble of Chicago and Rahsaan Roland Kirk color the air, yet Lafawndah’s mastery of pop songcraft, vocal production and razor-honed clarity of purpose cut through. In addition to the Lafawndah originals, The Fifth Season features interpretations of hybrid-folk godfather Beverly Glenn Copeland’s “Don’t Despair” and acid-impressionist prodigy Lili Boulanger’s “Old Buddhist Prayer.” Album highlight “You, at the End” deploys a poem by poet-performer Kae Tempest to aching, rift-tearing ends, and french dream-trap wraith Lala &ce features on “Le Malentendu”.

The Fifth Season anchors Lafawndah as a descendent of forebearers Brigitte Fontaine and Scott Walker - a born theatric whose acid humor warps the sub-continental undertow of her emotive storytelling. Loaded with an exquisite quality, marked by all good aspects the Brazilian Popular Music of the '70s, and obscure as hell, the self-titled debut by the duo Jaime & Nair is a revelation of all sorts. Recorded in 1974, when the artists had just turned 22, the album was released on CID a company that - at that same moment - had signed other important musicians like Nana Caymmi and Emílio Santiago. Outsiders par excellence, and influenced by the "Clube Da Esquina" sound (a sui generis musical architecture blended by Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges in 1973), forró (a propulsive North-Eastern rhythm), samba, bossa, classical arrangements, and country-pop touches, we have an expressive album full of charm through a gesture of swing. The outstanding and largely hailed song 'Sob O Mar' brings us back to a pure Brazilian soft-bossanova-beat adorned by luscious orchestral arrangements. It became a popular DJ tune for those in the know after being comped in the fantastic "High Jazz" series in the early 2000s, gaining this album grail status among collectors worldwide. But there is much more to it, the catchy 'Névoa Seca' stars a psych-guitar, subtlety, soloing all the way through a seductive pop atmosphere while 'Reino Das Pedras' has a melodic-rootsy vibe, close to a toada (a rhythmic variation of a lament), that recalls some shadows of Tom Jobim and Edu Lobo. And the delightful soft trip goes on and on, combining a dreamy lullaby vibe with subtle touches of Brazilian folk. The mind-blowing list of studio musicians present at the recording sessions includes a mix of cariocas (people from Rio de Janeiro), well know names like Wilson Das Neves, José Roberto Bertrami (from Azymuth!) and Copinha, with paulistas (natives of Sao Paulo) from the suburbs like future luminaries as Elder Bedaque and Jorge Carvalho, making this album an even more essential addition to any serious Brazilian music collection.

Where that album refreshed classic styles of European synth music for modern ears, ‘Magari’ - meaning “I Wish” in Italian - adapts their style to the unique Afro-Latin lilt of Brazilian music with central use of the Berimbau; a single-stringed percussion instrument commonly associated with the elegant martial art/dance of Capoeira, which the band’s Guido Zen brought home from his travels in South America. Combined with their juicy, almost fleshly arps and Guitar pedal-generated computer voice, the results are wonderfully wide-eyed, embracing bouts of motorik rhythm beside vertiginous noise wormholes and mystic tone poems that speak to a cumulative experience spanning decades spent hunting for life between the wires.

Thaba is a collaboration between South African singer/songwriter Khusi Seremane and American producer/musician Gabriel Cyr. Tragically in July 2020, while the two were working with Soundway to prepare the release of their first record, Seremane died a few days past his 41st birthday, after battling health issues for several years. The particular Thaba sound reflects a sonic duality drawing on a double pop heritage of Mbaqanga and Bubblegum artists like The Soul Brothers, Paul Ndlovu and Pat Shange alongside traces of Roxy Music, Grace Jones, Sade, and Talk Talk that’s wrapped up in a modern, electronic, layered, introspective and at times jazz-tinged production style. Brought together by a shared love of kwaito, 90’s R&B and classic downtempo, Seremane and Cyr collaborated for a decade after meeting online in the halcyon days of Myspace Music. While the pair initially planned for Seremane to guest on a Teleseen track, their ideas eventually evolved into an entire record. Their debut, Eyes Rest Their Feet, was created remotely over the course of several years, with the core recorded during a 2016 studio session in Cape Town. After returning to New York, Cyr honed these recordings with several Brooklyn-based musicians, calling upon members of Antibalas, Underground System, Midnight Magic, Loboko and others. Eyes Rest Their Feet spans genres as well as geography, touching on elements of soul, reggae, synth-pop and beyond, with lyrical themes that explore loneliness and the challenges of human relationships. Eyes Rest Their Feet not only represents the apex of Seremane’s work as an artist but also a meditation on the transformative power of love and the impermanence of all things.

'The Fountain was supposed to be a full length album but as the songs took shape, I realized that there was something cohesive going on with a smaller batch. They all focused on the theme of platonic love with a sense of gratitude. I think that traditionally, I had mostly written yearning, romantic odes and it was nice to focus on what was right in front of me,' says Justin Sullivan, who records as Night Shop and also plays with Kevin Morby.

Fittingly, The Fountain is a family affair, with friends and collaborators bringing the songs to life. New York (Queens) born and London based, his roots really shine through with regards to his production style. This new album Newscapism is a natural extension of his last album, continuing the story, reflecting his final 24 hours in the city and his move away to a new life. The tracks individually examining what was holding him there and why he had to move away. Continuing the narrative, naturally bringing you to the next chapter in his life with a new city, new loves and new adventures. Using samples to create a collage of different feels and structures in his tracks like ‘Can’t Let Go’ exhibiting the emotion of a reluctance to leave, full of energy, pace and floating piano keys and a driving kick, house production at its finest. With diverse tempo’s and feels featuring throughout ‘The Way You’re Making Me Feel’ is slightly low slung but still dreamy in its feel. Moving onto ’Uptown Sunday Morning (aka Flashback), with more sub-bass, spoken word and jazz elements, it is then followed by the interlude ‘Reasons For Leaving’ giving further insight int the city. Further pace, guitar licks and house mastery are introduced on City Blues, and a homage to the big apple in ‘A Page About Manhattan’ and then onto ‘A Fair Goodbye’ closing out his NYC story and bringing his album to a subtle end. This is a cohesive and emotional collection of pure house tracks and joy to hear in its entirety. Hollis Parker has managed to consistently put out material that pays homage to his roots both in Hip Hop, Jazz, Jazz Fusion and House, garnering support from heavyweights such as Larry Heard, DJ Sneak, Charles Webster and Joyce Muniz to name a few. This is undoubtedly a name that many of you will first discover and subsequently pay attention to.

Legend' is lofty praise that is often used lightly, however, Mike D from the Beastie Boys certainly is one in the truest of spirits. We are delighted after over 30 years of being involved in music to finally release a project involving such a hip-hop pioneer and icon as Mike. In keeping with the maverick attitude of the Beastie Boys, you don't always get what you expect. For this release there isn't a hip-hop beat, instrumental-funk or hardcore-punk joint in sight, rather an electronic-African club banger. Mike took it upon himself to rework Malian artists Idrissa Soumaoro and L'Eclipse De L'I.J.A. and their track ’Nissodia', which is taken from the 'Le Tioko-Tioko' album originally released in 1978 on the German Democratic Republic (gdr) label Eterna. The song was also featured on 'The Original Sound Of Mali' compilation released on Mr Bongo back in 2017. It was November 2019 and the day before a Mr Bongo 30 years celebration event in Paris at the Pedro party in the 'New Morning' club, when out of the blue the remix landed in Dave Mr Bongo's inbox. We loved it straight away and decided to road test it the next night in the club. Whether it be a remix/re-edit/rework, it doesn't matter, what does matter is that it works spectacularly in the club and had people jumping on the stage to dance at the party. A sensational track and one which leaves a beautiful memory of good-times from a night out in Paris (and one which is in retrospect is even more poignant as the late-great maestro Tony Allen was in the club that night), and we are sure it will light up many more dancefloors to come.

On his twelfth studio LP in nearly 20 years, Reks sounds just as hungry and passionate on T.H.I.N.G.S. (The Hunger Inside Never Gets Satisfied) as he did when Along Came The Chosen dropped back in 2001. Perhaps even more so. There seems to be a fire that gets lit under the Lawrence, MA native whenever he begins crafting a new album. “While my conceptualizing process has grown over the years, the actual approach to getting started has remained consistent,” Reks says. “There’s a youthful eagerness that comes over me every time I’m about to start a new record.” That feeling is palpable throughout T.H.I.N.G.S., an album bursting with everything you’d want from a Reks record, but also so much more. There are certainly instances of his trademark wordplay mixed with bravado on here, like the Apollo Brown-produced banger “King of the Town” featuring Lucky Dice & Chi Knox. But the real core of this record is Reks’ reckoning with bigger societal issues that have simply run rampant for far too long. And given his talents with the pen, he’s able to blend strong songwriting with deep, conceptual lyrics. Just listen to how he tackles white privilege on the otherwise catchy “Rachel Green” or the way he chronicles being Black in America on “White House.” That’s not even mentioning “The Complex,” a lyrically gripping look at Ptsd and Big Pharma featuring Pharoahe Monch, and his personal favorite track, “Nana & Grampy’s Song,” a heartfelt dedication to Black love. For Reks, it’s all about delivering the best possible music to his fans while staying true to himself. And he does exactly that not just through his own gifts, but also through collaborations with the likes of Pharoahe Monch, Lil Fame, Nottz, Apollo Brown, Statik Selektah, Evidence, and Marco Polo, among others.

Ayalew Mesfin stands aside the likes of Mulatu Astake, Mahmoud Ahmed, Hailu Mergia and Alemayehu Eshete as a legend of 1970s Ethiopia. Mesfin’s music is some of the funkiest to arise from this unconquerable East African nation. Mesfin’s recording career, captured in nearly two dozen 7” singles and numerous reel-to-reel tapes, shows the strata of the most fertile decade in Ethiopia’s 20th century recording industry, when records were pressed constantly by both independent upstarts and corporate behemoths, even if they were only distributed within the confines of this East African nation. Though Mesfin was forced underground by the Derg regime that took control of Ethiopia in 1974, he has returned almost 50 years later with this triumphant set albums – the first time that his music has been presented in this form. These albums give us a chance to discover a rare and beautiful moment in music history, in anthologies built from Mesfin’s uber-rare 7” single releases and from previously unreleased recordings taken from master tapes. Urban Waves Records presents "Some Alternate Timelines”, the new album by Canadian producer Liam Mansfield a.k.a. Vienna. Hailing from Montreal, the young producer is known for his unique sound, drawing inspiration from a rich blend of styles ranging from funk, electronic, jazz, hip hop and even disco. The album takes you on a visit to Vienna's world. As it’s name indicates, we're landing in a parallel universe where things took a different path but nuances are subtle. Rhythms are off kilter, synths are strangely crunchy, electric piano chords bubble up and fly away, and yet somehow it all pulls together beautifully. Discovering these unique sonic elements is part of the experience, and as you progress through the album it's hard not to become infatuated. Vienna's music has a very singular charm and feel that will take you by surprise, but once you're struck it feels natural and familiar.

The album comes along a very unique and limited vinyl edition with a special color, a marbled black on transparent. The perfect mastering gives the vinyl an extra punch specially on the basses that just feel otherworldly on the analog format.

HIGHLIGHTSCommissioned by the acclaimed film director Roman Polanski, the English cult band Third Ear Band faced the challenge in order to insert a hell of imagination and creativity to his very own, author cinematographic version of Macbeth, a play by William Shakespeare.The resulting 44 minutes of imaginative sounds, divided in 16 outstanding pieces, is an astonishing example of an archaic, twisted, abstract psychedelia, rooted on medieval and classical textures. A Monster-Munster gem!DESCRIPTIONAs a luxurious aperitif for the future release of the "Elements" album (including its extra sauces), Munster Records bring us "Macbeth", the staggering soundtrack by the English band Third Era Band for a Roman Polanski's film, recorded and produced in 1971.A magical invitation urging the listener to dive into unsuspected regions of boldness, unpredictability, and an intimate abstract-folkster-experimentalism. According to the founding member Glenn Sweeney, "the music was called alchemical because it was produced by repetition". However, mind it, such repetition doesn't follow the samemusical structures of, let's say, Terry Rilley, Steve Reich or Philip Glass due to its indefinite nature of internal-twisted and tormented passages of a peculiar poetic enchantment.The band, formed in Canterbury, started in 1967 playing an oriental hypnotic-free-form-folk. Signed to the prosperous cult label Harvest, they debuted in 1969 with "Alchemy", an instrumental jazzy-psych improvisational album. A fully formed masterpiece came in 1970 on the already aforementioned self-titled opus, also known as "Elements". For "Macbeth", their third one, just the main chief Glenn Sweeney (assorted percussion) and Richard Coff (viola and violin) remained from the original four-piece line-up.
