Brown working full time on the brilliant music for their modern RPG opus Sea of Stars, they enrolled Yasunori Mitsuda as a guest composer. Anything less than a legendary score simply wouldn’t do.

We at iam8bit are humbled to play a part in bringing that score to life, here for you. This is the Sea of Stars 2xLP, a veritable epic on Solar Orange and Lunar Blue wax. The seductive sounds of Portugal swing to Dark Entries on Rock Rendez Vous: Música Moderna Portuguesa 1985-1986, a compilation of vintage Iberian synth, wave, and postpunk gems. The legendary club Rock Rendez Vous (rrv) opened its doors in Lisbon in 1980, heralding a new era in the Portuguese underground. Although touring acts like Killing Joke, Danse Society, or Echo & the Bunnymen graced its stage, RRV more vitally served as ground zero for a new generation of Portuguese bands, one simultaneously in touch with broader international musical movements while being invested in establishing a national sonic identity. Rock Rendez Vous culls 9 tracks of prime Portuguese indie tunes from the Música Moderna Portuguesa compilations released in 1985 and 1986, documenting the heyday of this movement. Jangly and brooding postpunk gems like “Levante” from Jovem Guarda, Projecto AZUL’s “New Sides,” and Essa ENTENTE’s “Festa Final” are well-represented here. Meanwhile, quirky Balearic-laced synthpop gems like D. W. ART’s “Mate” or Zona PROIBIDA’s “Musak” add a subtly regional flare. Part of the proceeds earned from the album will go toward the Jazz Foundation of America’s Musician’s Emergency fund, which supports musicians who have been affected by COVID-19 shutdowns.

Joe Petrucelli of JFA shared, “The Jazz Foundation of America deeply appreciates the artists, songwriters and label teams who contributed to this project with such compassion and generosity. As pandemic restrictions continue to lift, we recognize that musicians will face a particularly lengthy recovery. They were among the first to be hit by the effects of the crisis and will be among the last to achieve a true sense of normalcy or stability. We and our partners are here for the long haul.”

Among the featured artists are Herbie Hancock, Joshua Redman, Christian McBride, IRMA and LEO, Cécile McLorin Salvant and more. The highly hailed pianist Herbie Hancock commented, “I'm honored to be part of this meaningful project that supports the important work of the Jazz Foundation, who has always been there for musicians going through tough times. They have been an especially critical resource for the community during the pandemic, helping those in need of medical care, putting food on the table and paying their rent.”

While the album supports musicians across the industry, it also commemorates the artists whose lives were lost to the pandemic and throughout the year, including Wallace Roney and Jimmy Heath. The collaboration illustrates the camaraderie among labels and musicians, tying together the talents of a roster of stars to support the people who have brought the world together through music.

With this compilation of music pressed in two parts and written by a set of artists from very diverse horizons, it is Polychrome’s perspective on the rave that we want to share. The dance floor is also a space of self-reflection. The A-side is catered by two artists from one of our favorite collectives, De Lichting. With “A Reflection”, RDS opens up and shares a beautifully crafted house gem, providing for a soft and introspective yet groovy “eyes closed” dance. Nathan Kofi takes on the A2 with his unique deep house sound, layering sweet and cinematic synth sounds over an Afro-induced drum sequencing, creating a warm sonic envelope. Bob Swans' 'Bodyform4U' unites the robots with a universal message of togetherness. Its multiple layers of shuddering arpeggios and star-aligned synths working in unison to quell any fears and send us off into a space age utopia. One that'll work as well soundtracking the end of the session as it will as the dancefloor's filling up; its subtle anthemic qualities sure to rouse the spirits of even the most dehumanized cyborgs.

New signing Lone Saxon drops 'Hypersleep' which utilises rich piano chords and a hefty breakbeat, switching up the vibe but keeping things super uplifting. This one reminds us of that innocent period when you could get on the megabus for 50p and score three for a tenner on the dancefloor.Â An evocative vocal refrain adds a moment of thoughtful introspection in between the e-rushes and arm-raising for another moment of interactive harmony.

Finally, 'Webo' sees Franz Scala (with a little help from Il Bosco) return to source, delivering a bona fide slice of maximum balls out MANCTALO chug. With tension-wrought chord progressions, delicious layers of lead melodies and a soaring vocal, there's few that can resist the charms of this late night electro-disco hyper anthem.

Laurent Garnier select new tracks for [QR]V.200.SPK.24 by six COD3 QR favourites Jules Wells, Skatman, Works Of Intent, Squal G, YANNLEAN and Joaquim Plossu.

Following June's "[QR]V.172.TAM.24", featuring tracks by Avision, DJ Deep and Deetron, Laurent Garnier's COD3 QR label is back with another vinyl-only release. This varied 6-pack, coded "[QR]V.200.SPK.24" is comprised of exclusive tracks from members of the extended COD3 QR family: Skatman, Works Of Intent, Yann Lean, and Joaquim Plossu & Salem Focus, alongside Jules Wells' "Dreamer" (released digitally on the label in May) and Squal G's "Waiting 4U" (from April).

Skatman, the Berlin based, Tunisian born DJ, producer and label head of Cognitive Prophecy follows up his huge COD3 QR track "Tribute to a Dancefloor" with the deep, groovy and aptly titled "Transcending House". He has already gained recognition for his approach to electronic music, bridging the gap between classic and contemporary with tracks on Innervisions and Correspondent, becoming one of the most intriguing and captivating artists.

Jules Wells who delivered the infectious "The Clap" on COD3 QR 016 is back with the retro House sound of "Dreamer". Jules Wells is from Bordeaux, France. Strongly influenced by the Motor City, Jules has released on the likes of Submerge, Twilight 76, KMS, Planet E, Brique Rouge and Logos (Macedonia).

Works Of Intent, a core member of the UK South Asian collective DAYTIMERS and Emotional Weaponry label owner, has recently released an acclaimed guest mix for the legendary John Digweed's Transitions radio show. Known for his ability to blend emotive storytelling with rhythmic precision, he follows up his "Richer Sound" album (released last year on the label) with the intricate and uncompromising "Subversive".

Producer and manager of the Slates Records label, Squal G is a French artist who has been passionate about electronic music since the early '90s. Initially, he practised his art as a DJ before turning to machines and computers as he progressed with production. Never sticking to a single style, instead, allowing inspiration to lead him, he nevertheless remains in the Techno spirit, as heard on "Waiting 4U".

A multi-faceted composer and DJ, Yann Lean also works as a sound engineer for himself and other artists. Whether working as a duo with Madben and their side project Trunkline or as a solo artist, he has won the trust and support of prestigious labels such as KMS, Bedrock, Planet Rhythm, Skryptom and Materia, as well as COD3 QR who released "Hope" in 2020. Now he's back with tribal drums on "To Get Close".

French born, Mexican resident Joaquim Plossu has been making music as a producer, multi-instrumentalist and sound designer for the past 20 years with releases on COD3 QR, 31 Recordings, Fokuz, Repertoire, Deep Heads, Planet Rhythm and more. Both music composer and producer for TV and films, as well as Drum & Bass producer in his spare time, he teams up again with Leeds (UK) based Salem Focus (Fokuz Records / Soulvent / Galacy) for some energetic D&B on closing track "Cosmic".

The psychedelic scene that never was – the perfect subtitle to this compilation. There were barely any drugs in Hungary to begin with. In this era, alcohol, music, and imagination have served as the primary means of mind alteration among the youth. The Communist party had a firm grip on culture through monopole control over venues, the media, and the recording industry, western records were not available, clubs enforced a strict dress code of suits, shirts, and longer skirts, and the police harassed young men for not more than having long hair or wearing blue jeans.
There was, however, an undercurrent of smaller semi-professional bands striving to succeed in the shadow of the very few stars privileged by the sole state owned record company. Given their chances to release music were at best limited to a few 7“ singles at the mercy of said record company powers. Psyched Out Grooves from Hungary compiles ten of the most outstanding singles recorded by the underdogs of this period. Some of the bands featured on here have eventually reached wider success by switching to more commercial styles, like Bergendy, Neoton, and Apostol. Most, like Echo, Meteor, Kék Csillag, Non-Stop, were temporal formations that dissolved after a few years due to personal conflicts, lack of success, or both. Others, like Scampolo or Juventus, lasted a longer time without an actual break through. Most of these bands never had a consistent, lasting ’psychedelic’ repertoire or identity at any point. These tracks were the exception, not the norm. That coherence - the illusion of a scene - comes from the curation and sequencing of Budabeats head honchos Von Yodi and Gandharva. It is the arrangement of these puzzle pieces that makes them fit together.

The same Wakhévitch concludes this collection with his 'Sang pourpre', taken from the legendary Docteur Faust' album illustrated by Philippe Druillet.

Long traded and coveted, discussed and debated, Propeller Product’s 1981 cassette compilation finally receives a physical release reflecting its original intention and aim. And this is its Boston origin story: a small collective with a DIY artistic bent, Propeller launched in 1981. Founded as a collaborative taking inspiration from Factory Records and the “pay no more” ethos of Dischord Records and Crass, Propeller offers a unique window into Boston and the American post-punk underground. Led by Justin Burrill, Michael Cudahy, and Steve Gregoropoulos, alongside a constellation of curious cohorts, Propeller hoped to move beyond Boston’s bluesy bar rock, to say nothing of its nascent hardcore scenes. The Allston-based Propeller bands explored a more angular and inventive musical space. “Propeller wanted a unified aesthetic,” Cudahy recalls. “I remember having a meeting where we spent over an hour deliberating what typeface to use. I wanted to release a compilation of bands I thought weren’t being done justice.” Existing concurrently with the brawny hardcore acts emerging from the Bay State, Propeller’s influences, execution, and intent offered a 180-degree turn from the alpha male Boston Crew. By contrast, “Punk rock was a refuge,” Cudahy says about his fellow Propeller artists, but just “two years after punk happened and hardcore came along in Boston, it was like, ‘Hey you were the guys who beat me up for being punk and now you’re in a band!’ Propeller was the weird offshoot species.” Propeller’s practice space occupied the very same building as Gallery East, where many Boston hardcore bands played. This was also the location where most of the Prop 4-1 tape was recorded. Boston’s offshoot species had found its voice. Upon release Propeller’s cassette-only compilation hit a monumental snag. Because of a manufacturing error almost all of the Propeller Product cassettes were defective, screeching in rotation and making the music largely inaudible. Even the deluxe edition that came with a 24-page cut-and-paste collage booklet housed in an oversized polybag didn’t sound right. Propeller had the music, the artwork, and the vision, but manufacturing, materials, and logistics all failed Allston, until now. Carefully restored and remastered by Massachusetts's Bob Weston (Chicago Mastering Service), Lawrence Wilmington’s debut release presents the original 18 songs on 180-Gram double LP for the first time and features reworked artwork taken from the deluxe booklet. 450 copies, full-color gatefold includes download.
