Exploring late-night, after-hours meditations on sound; ‘Everything Above The Sky (Astral Travelling with Luke Una)’ is a new compilation by the titular DJ, promoter and enigmatic cultural curator. Off the back of the E Soul Cultura phenomena, this compilation comes at a timely point in Luke’s rich career as he soars the heights of playing all over the world. Avoiding any chance of his sound being pigeonholed, Luke has put together a tracklist of songs and music that have a transcendental feel, after coming off the grid, going back to source, outside the city walls .

Music has long been believed to aid out of body experiences and many of us have searched long and hard for a combination of those elusive ingredients that might alleviate some of the monotony of everyday life, our daily routines and obligations, and those things that seem to block us from the spirit of the universe. In this collection, Luke selects music with all the right ingredients in just the right quantities, allowing the listener to engage in an esoteric journey of enlightenment through sound. Being a prolific collector of music, Luke initially delivered enough tracks to compile several compilations, making the licensing process the biggest effort to date for the label. The music moves softly and slowly, never becoming too intrusive, exemplifying the wonderful elevating properties of simple songs played from the heart.

Luke’s Everything Above The Sky manifesto reads, “Astral Travelling in the meadowlands with acid folk, spiritual jazz, around midnight hocus pocus, cosmic psychedelic soul, magical spellbound whirling swirling love songs, Brazilian ballads of light into machine soul gospel utopia dreaming, Balearic bossa, Outer Space ancient African drum, the breath of trees, escaping the big bad modern world, gathering round winter fires, walking amongst the bracken in Padley Gorge in late summer twilight, overlooking the Hope Valley, escaping ego, detaching and finally letting go amongst the stars with the slowly floating people. It’s beautiful beyond. Everything above the Sky”.

Beginning his career as an original Sheffield house young blood in the mid 1980s, Luke’s move to Manchester and partnership with Justin Crawford saw the birth of Electric Chair, a cornerstone cult night in the UK underground club scene. Then came Electric Elephant, a Croatian festival paying homage to their wild eclecticism from Balearic to Brazilian to É Soul, house, disco and techno. Luke’s much loved, long-running Homoelectric night and more recently Homobloc sell out festival for 10,000 souls has been at the forefront of Manchester’s LGBTQ+ cultural landscape. Luke’s Friday evening show on Worldwide FM captured imaginations and became a cult four-hour must-listen monthly journey for fans all over the world. Today, Luke remains, as ever, at the forefront of a changing milieu, pairing the momentous legacy of Manchester’s 80s and 90s scene with the delivery of what today’s club communities need to get down.

The legendary TBN tag team, Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio and Yoshihiko Kannari, have revived and newly recorded this superb Erroll Garner album. Tsuyoshi Yamamoto and Yoshihiko Kannari, a former engineer for the TBM label, reunited on their last album "Blues for K" (scol-1062). The duo have also produced numerous world-class recordings from Japan, including "Midnight Sugar" and "Misty". Then in 2023, Yoshihiko Kaminari made his return to the Onkio Haus in Tokyo! With the broader adoption of the internet around the turn of the century, how people would engage with and discover underground music would change forever. As a result of the new digital era, DIY was now worldwide, and no band embraced this new frontier better than Have A Nice Life. Formed in 2000 by duo Dan Barrett and Tim Macuga, the Middletown, CT-based pair would, throughout the 00s, self-release and share a number of demos and home recordings via early social media channels as well as establish its in-house label Enemies List Home Recordings. These first steps set in motion Have A Nice Life’s rise to renown as an icon of underground music in the internet age, culminating with the release of its pivotal 2008 debut album, Deathconsciousness. Through word of mouth and online discussion, Deathconsciousness became subject to viral praise thanks to its synthesis of bleak post-punk, lo-fi shoegaze, and carpets of hypnotic drone music. Eventually, this humble self-released project would attain the status of a post-internet cult classic, amassing Have A Nice Life a fervent online following that the band would interact with in kind.

In an effort to thank and continue to engage with Have A Nice Life’s internet cult following, Barrett and Macuga would regularly share links to old demos, works in progress, and outtakes from the recording of Deathconsciousness. Over time, a group of fans would compile these demos into an unofficial release. Dubbed Voids, this fan-made compilation several alternate takes of tracks from Deathconsciousness, as well as a handful of early versions of songs that would appear on Have A Nice Life’s two following albums, The Unnatural World and Sea of Worry. While undeniably reminiscent of their final album version counterparts, the earlier versions of these tracks each feel distinct in a way that makes the moody, decidedly lo-fi aura of Voids an essential slice of the Have A Nice Life discography. Hungry for more from the enigmatic duo, fans swarmed around this compilation, accompanied by loud calls for it to receive a physical release. Seeing that demand and with the band’s blessing, a pair of fan-made tape pressings of Voids would be released via Music Ruins Lives, a DIY label run by Have A Nice Life superfan Thom Wasluck, also known for his band Planning for Burial. Between both instances of the tape swiftly selling out and the compilation’s long absence from streaming services, Voids has historically been an elusive release to track down, only available in the obscurest corners of the internet or physically on the secondary market at eye-wateringly high prices. Over a decade since its initial, unofficial release in 2011, The Flenser is proud to reissue Have A Nice Life’s Voids for the first time ever in an official capacity in physical form. Originally released digitally in early 2023 and freshly remastered for the occasion, this reissue of the beloved compilation will receive its first-ever wide release on physical formats (CD/LP/Cassette). This release also marks the first time fan-favorite tracks from Voids “Sisyphus”, “I’m Doctor House”, and “Human Error” will be available on vinyl and CD. Like a symbolic passing of the torch, the physical versions of the 2023 Voids reissue come with a foreword essay written by Wasluck, the previous custodian of Voids during the Music Ruins Lives days.

Quartet Records, in collaboration with Carosello Edizioni Musicali, presents a definitive, expanded 2-lp edition of Ennio Morricone’s celebrated score for 1971 Italian thriller Giornata Nera PER L’ariete (aka THE Fifth Cord), directed by Luigi Bazzoni and starring Franco Nero, Silvia Monti, Ira Von Fürstenbergm Edmund Purdon, Pamela Tiffin and Agostina Belli. Morricone’s thriller scores remain some of his most distinctive and original works. As demonstrated in his scores for Dario Argento’s efforts in the genre, Morricone’s uncanny ability to combine lyricism, unbridled avant-garde experimentation and stylish elegance was his most significant contribution to the category. Giornata Nera PER L’ariete shows Morricone once again embracing the sophisticated avant-garde sound while beginning his score with a haunting tune performed by Edda Dell’Orso heard over the film’s main titles. The lullaby-like theme has a timeless quality, providing a disturbing and disarming melody for the film. As with many of his giallos, Ennio Morricone’s score for Giornata Nera PER L’ariete was never released on an album (only the main theme was included in the Morricone compilation album Colori in 1971). In 1996, under the composer’s supervision, the Point label released the first official album of the score on CD. The first vinyl edition was released by Dagored on a generous LP in 2001. It was subsequently released by Spettro in 2016, this time using the same program that Morricone had produced in 1996. For this new deluxe, 2-lp Quartet release, the music has been fully restored, remixed and edited by Daniel Winkler from the original session tapes, presenting the first vinyl edition of the complete score as Morricone conceived it for the film. It has been specially mastered for vinyl by Chris Malone, and is presented in a luxurious gatefold jacket printed in transparent bloody red and giallo splatter.

The fourth studio album from DIIV—a strenuous four year effort that challenged the group professionally, personally, and artistically., The result is a sound that stretches well beyond territory they've explored in their previous works. The album title is a reference to a “Boiling Frog” in Daniel Quinn’s The Story of B. The band explains “If you drop a frog in a pot of boiling water, it will of course frantically try to clamber out. But if you place it gently in a pot of tepid water and turn the heat on low, the frog will sink into a tranquil stupor, exactly like one of us in a hot bath, and before long, with a smile on its face, it will unresistingly allow itself to be boiled to death.” The sound and lyrical themes of the record are well suited for this metaphor. A heavy catharsis drenches listeners as vocalist Zach Smith delivers hauntingly beautiful lyric. Lines such as “I say I'm not afraid, I’ve lived through pain, I’m learning to see through everything” penetrate deep as they float atop a lush wall of fuzzed out reverb and simple but effective groove. Conflicting feelings of sadness, pain, and comfort wash over listeners like a warm bath. Start to finish, this is a truly beautiful record that positions itself to stand the test of time. Pressed on limited melting amber vinyl in an edition of 500 copies with obi strip.

In 2015, I decided to fly to NYC again. When I told Robert about it, he responded briefly: „I’m flying with you. I’ve never been to New York. Just book me the same flight as you.“ To my surprise, that’s exactly what happened. Our trip was from April 9th to the 21st, 2015, flying from Zurich to Newark. I had the contacts and knew my way around. He had the camera and captured everything. I was his guide on the ground, and he became my eyes.

He has worked in the past with artists such as Roy Hargrove, Pharoah Sanders, Tony Allen, Kenny Garrett, Jacob Desvarieux, Glen Ballard, Harold Faustin, Michel Martell, etc. He hosted Quincy Jones" 85th birthdaycelebration at Montreux Festival. The Bois-Caïman ceremony was Haiti"sfirst major collective uprising against slavery. Joweebrought together all his inner tubes, soprano,alto, tenor, wood, clarinets, piccolo _¼éute, cornet, that blows, that winds, that rumbles. This record is an incantation, a therapy, it cleanses the world by drawing on the fantasized memory of the Haitian revolution. There are Freedom Suites by Sonny Rollins, Max Roach and others. Prayer music, music to break the chains in your head and on your wrists, music of black power and white magic. For Jowee, a kid from Montreal, son of a Haitian pastor, who sang Jesus in all the tones, and then Michael Jackson, and then 2Pac, who learned jazz from Ornette Coleman, the ceremony necessarily has the taste of free. This record is a healing hour- long improvisation.

Patrick Sansone is a Nashville based multi-instrumentalist, composer, music producer, and photographer. He is also a member of Wilco, The Autumn Defense, and Mellotron Variations. Infinity Mirrors is his first album as a solo artist.

Sansone’s interest in synthesizers goes back to his teens in the 1980s when he was afforded the benefits and luxury of time, time to simply discover and enjoy the pure pleasures of sound. Meridian, Mississippi in the mid-eighties wasn’t exactly a synthesizer kind of town, but he did manage to get his hands on a Korg Polysix and an Arp Axxe and spent solitary hours creating sounds and blissing out. It was a foundational experience, one that has led to a life long passion for collecting and playing vintage synthesizers. Some of Patrick’s favorites utilized in Infinity Mirrors include the Roland Jupiter-8, MiniMoog Model D, and Sequential Circuits Prophet-10, as well as the modern Mellotron D4000 and Teenage Engineering OP1

The ideas behind what have become Infinity Mirrors have been brewing for several years. Patrick’s plan had always been to use his ever growing stable of synthesizers in some sort of project, but it wasn't until 2017 that these ideas really started to come together. His goal was not to sit down and record an album. It was more of a desire to engage with new creative processes, an effort to recapture the spirit and energy he enjoyed when he first discovered synthesizers. To accomplish this, Patrick established a set of expectations around which he would record. Central to his expectations was the idea that all of the pieces would be spontaneously created. He decided the instruments needed to be the ones to lead the recording sessions. Patrick arranged several synthesizers from his collection in the studio and set aside a series of evenings for recording. This would allow each composition to retain its own unique mood and identity. Patrick simply entered the room and allowed his instruments to draw him in. There was no planning ahead. It was simply improvisation in its purest form, what he has called “sonic sand-painting.” And as a result, four of the six pieces on Infinity Mirrors were recorded during these sessions. For listeners who enjoy Klaus Schulze, Brian Eno, and Tangerine Dream.

This gatefold 2xLP is a combination of the group’s only two albums, consisting of one LP of Five Tread cuts plus “Cecil Likes to Dance” a never-before-released live recording from Thistle Hall (1984) and the full 1985 LP Future Jaw-Clap. This material that has been unavailable since mid-1980s. It is well documented that in the early ‘80’s New Zealand was awash with adventurous new music. Though sharing the kind of happy isolation and the DIY ethic with contemporaneous outfits like Flying Nun, South Indies and Xpressway, one band cut a decidedly different path. The Primitive Art Group, formed in Wellington, devoted itself to collective improvisation coming out of a jazz tradition. With the line-up of Anthony Donaldson (drums), David Donaldson (bass), Neil Duncan (saxes), Stuart Porter (saxes), David Watson (guitar), and originally with Pam Grey (on cello), the group’s relatively brief existence left a lasting impression on the New Zealand’s free music scene. Musically, there was no precedent in New Zealand for their combination of noise, collective playing and compositional freedom. Gary Steel from the local music rag TOM, wrote “The first time I saw the Primitive Art Group they blew my tiny mind… Great sheets of architectural noise coming at you from the stage. Where else would you see free music in New Zealand in the early 80s? You just didn't.” The band’s five-year lifespan was non-stop activity: rehearsing, touring, the creation of Braille Records (their own record label which released ten LPs), dance and theater work, appearances at music festivals, and hosting two hugely influential national festivals of improvisation at Thistle Hall, Wellington. In 1984, Primitive Art Group spent a week making their first recording, an ambitious double LP, Five Tread (Braille 001) which had only a single pressing and sold-out locally. One year later they were back in the studio making their second album, Future Jaw-Clap (Braille 002). This outing contained tighter pieces, as the band widened its repertoire with nods to broader influences and antecedents. In 1986, The Primitive Art Group gave their last concert at the Wellington Town Hall, just a half mile from Rawa House and the legendary Thistle Hall where their first shows had taken place. The band’s Braille Records’ recordings have never been released outside of New Zealand, nor have ever been available digitally. As Thurston Moore writes, “these are magic time capsule, lost-n-found recordings, previously shared only by deep-diving record collector aesthetes”. The group’s brief tenure has continued to inspire new generations of improvisers, but nothing has ever quite matched the visceral blast of the Primitive Art Group’s arrival on the scene. Every member of the group has carried on doing creative work at the highest levels: scoring films, making art, mentoring, organizing, touring and always playing.

Charles Mingus's music is, and will remain, in the hearts and ears of all Jazz lovers, serving to inspire generations of musicians. Mingus, besides being a magnificent double bassist, was also a prolific composer, arranger, pianist, and band leader of several historic ensembles. His groups, ranging from trios to big bands, have traversed and influenced various stylistic periods from the 1950s to the 1970s. Undoubtedly, Mingus, alongside Duke Ellington, was one of the most important composers of the 20th century; in his music, one can hear the roots of Blues, echoes of Gospel, Swing, Bebop, Soul Jazz, and even Free and avant-garde music. It is for this reason that his music can almost be considered an encyclopedic portrait of Jazz history and can still be played today without appearing dated, instead providing new insights and inspiration. From these considerations arises my desire to reinterpret Mingus's repertoire, influenced by our individual experiences as musicians. In this recording, in addition to Mingus's compositions, two original compositions inspired by or closely related to Mingus's musical style are performed. The group originates from the musical collaboration of over thirty years between myself, pianist Massimo Colombo, and saxophonist Tino Tracanna, and is complemented by saxophonist Gianni Azzali, drummer Tommy Bradascio, and two new young talents of Italian Jazz: trombonist Andrea Andreoli and trumpeter Daniele Nocella. One day, when he was already very ill, Charles Mingus said to his wife Sue: "You know, I've already had a body. Next time I want to be a star. I want to shine all night." Antonio Loureiro, who was establishing himself as an up-and-coming young composer in the state of Minas Gerais by winning the Premio Bdmg Instrumental, a competition for prominent composers, released his debut album "Antonio Loureiro" in 2010 with full anticipation. The music seamlessly blends influences from Brazilian jazz predecessors such as Egberto Gismonti and Hermeto Pascoal, Brazil's rich musical heritage from popular music to folklore to the "Clube da Esquina," as well as progressive rock, jazz, and electronica. Antonio has released six records so far, and in addition to his own work, he has produced and supported various artists, and outside of Brazil he has performed with artists such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Miho Hazama, Qururi, Hakushi Hasegawa, and many others.

Dust is an art book of new photographs by Phil Elverum. There are no words. There is no narrative. These are clear images of a world in color, moments of depth and eeriness found on solitary walks and international drives. The images were made at home (Anacortes, Wash.) and all over the world (in the quiet moments found during Mount Eerie tours), but the where is not the point. The point is the breath of the unknown that a strange new image can breathe from a page if one sits still and looks at it.

They are arranged in pairs, the page spreads building a crucial interplay that creates a third, invisible, internal world as one looks, prompting a wordless conversation between the two images and the viewer. Pairs of rich and mysterious photographs, beautifully printed and bound in black stamped coarse linen. Inside the back cover is a secondary booklet containing 48 photographs.

Live at Bonnaroo '22 captures Melbourne psych-rockers King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard at their most freewheeling and ferocious. Taking the stage at the Tennessee festival to a captive audience as the clock struck midnight, the band ripped through this eleven-song set with intensity, letting up only to space out on certain tracks like the near ten-minute "Magenta Mountain" and a poignant rendition of fan favorite "Work This Time". This official bootlegger version of the release is spread out across two LPs, with one pressed on bubblegum and the other on sour grape color vinyl. The release was mastered for vinyl by Kern Haug and pressed at Furnace Record Pressing, with artwork by Michael Rogers.
