Darwin Chamber is the alter ego of Mark Greenfield. This legend of the early Rave scene has been making tracks for more than 30 years. Cryovac 27 opens with the driving sounds of Max Watts. Max has a brash commitment to a spartan drive of bass and kick. Watts captures a sense of urgency by making use of his synth stabs and eclectic, erratic melodies. “Watts Groove” is a rambunctious tool for the competitive DJ. “Santa ana” smoothes out the ride with an electro groove that pulls an elegant funk into a freaky shakedown. Watts adds emotion to a classic break style while staying firmly grounded in space. The B side hosts, A.Garcia and M.Kretsch, continue their lab work on a couple of well rounded bangers that blend the talents of this duo into an effective sound collaborative. Infectious percussion moves a tasteful mix of rich silky synth lines manifesting “Layhee”. Diving in on a heroic bop through the confusion of synth and breakdown is "indianagiver". A rugged rocker with spacious atmosphere held together by a backbone of bass and hi hat. Garcia and Kretsch put forth a well built product for a disposable age.

Footin’ It by George Benson b/w The Harlem Buck Strut by Les McCann | Galaxy Sound Co. — Gsc45-037 | Master grade edit kings & beat makers Black Cash & Theo AKA Thelonious Beats have a vast catalogue of essential sounds & much of it comes on their Galaxy Sound Co home label. We are now up to number 37, &, like its predecessors, is crate-essential heaters. Their latest donut is a remastered & limited 7" pressing of two glorious jazz-funk nuggets that any DJ worth their weight in vinyl will want in their crates.

Side A’s “Footin’ It” by #GeorgeBenson is a serious treat for me. It is taken from Benson’s 5th studio LP from 1968, “The Shape Of Things To Come”. It was his first album for A&M Records & his first album to be produced by Creed Taylor, who would remain his producer until 1976. The track features #jazz legends Stan Webb on flute & Herbie Hancock on piano. While I knew the track from my dad’s record collection, I lovingly am taken back to DJ Neil Armstrong who’s highly-coveted mixtape/CDR “2Original” mashed it & extended the break with Diamond D & The Psychotic Neurotics’ “Freestyle (Yo, That’s That Shit)” who sampled the track in 1992. Still grooves me to this day.

Side B’s “The Harlem Buck Strut” is taken from pianist Les McCann’s 1973 #jazzfunk LP “Layers”. The LP was a groundbreaking jazz-synth record that was unlike any other McCann had made. Aside from a 3-man percussion section & electric bassist Jimmy Rowser, the LP & track are entirely electronic, one of the first jazz albums with such an emphasis. The track is truly forward-looking & ahead of its time, & clearly why it resonated with so many artists as a source to sample. Heads will recall it being lifted for Pete Rock & C.L. (“The Main Ingredient” 1994) & Funkdoobiest (“Rock On” 1994). But the best, for me, was Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” & “Bullet Boy”.

Audio Soul Project is back with their latest vinyl-only EP, Simurgh. With a title inspired by the mythical Persian bird, these four tracks fuse elements of house, R&B, dub, and drum & bass to create an ecstatic and hypnotic experience. The EP kicks off with "Deliver Me," a dreamy house track with warm filtered chords and bouncing synth bass. R&B female vocal ad libs pepper the groove and the refrain "Deliver Me" adds a sense of yearning. The percussion, including morphing 4x4 and breakbeat drums, piano and synth stabs, nod to the cerebral Detroit and Chicago house compositions of the mid 90s. "Azizam Dub" takes a more stripped-down approach with a subsonic bass line bump and Juno 106 stabs. Frantic percussion and deftly cut vocal samples accent the ebbs and flows of the arrangement, making for a dynamic and engaging dance. The B-side of the record starts with "Internal Vybrations," a bass-heavy drum & bass track that winds and jumps with multiple layers of deep, fluttering bass and ambient pads and strings. Percussion layers like hi-hats, shakers, and maracas lift and relax the rhythm in parallel to the rest of the composition, making for a hypnotic and trance-inducing vibe. The B2 track on the EP, "Celebration Dub," is a bass-heavy swinging house track with ecstatic diva "Whooo" samples that punctuate the ups and downs of the groove's energy. Classic reggae and dub-influenced vocal samples and heavy tape delay on certain key instruments add to the joyful and uplifting vibe of the track. The keyboard and string section can transport a dancer to other realms of consciousness if they let themselves go to the groove. Simurgh is a masterful fusion of various genres that showcases Audio Soul Project's production prowess and ability to create an entrancing sonic journey. TL;DR: Audio Soul Project's Simurgh EP features 4 tracks of dub-infused house music. Italian duo Night Passengers aka Nicola Loporchio and Emanuele Del Carmine serve up their first collaborative album this summer. Find A Way comes on Born just a year or so after the project was spontaneously formed during lockdown, and is a seamless nine-track instrumental fusion of soul, jazz, funk, breaks and 80s grooves.

Nicola Loporchio is also known as Nico Lahs and Cosmic Garden and is a producer with more than a decade's experience. In that time he has landed on countless influential labels with a range of EPs and EPs that take in everything from downtempo to deep house, hip hop to funk. During the lockdowns of 2020, he hooked up with fellow Italian musician Emanuele Del Carmine who has served up some fresh disco sounds in the last couple of years. They began jamming together in early 2021 and soon found they shared common ideas when it came to good time grooves. Now, that plays out across a proper full-length that is perfect for close home listening and laid back Sundays, but always with one eye on a cosy and intimate dance floor.

This most cohesive of works opens with the joyous keys of 'Moonlight Sonata' which sets an immediately romantic mood. 'Illusion' is then a golden bit of jazz-funk with warm, glowing chords and dusty broken beats that make you want to shuffle. 'Wandering' is another piece of fine musicianship with perfect interplay between the live drums, jazzy keys and cosmic leads. The title track then slows things down. It's deep, spacious and atmospheric with suggestive bass, pillowy chords and distant melodies twinkling like stars in a night sky.

'Escape On A Sunny Sunday' has a lush retro-future feel, with freeform keys racing about the scales as the cosmic leads and tight drums tie the whole track together. During 'Moments Of Insanity,' the album launches further into the cosmos on waves of radiant melody and splashy cymbals. 'Past Memories' taps into 80s nostalgia with more blurry-edged chords and natty synth sequences riding on louche drums. The heady 'On A Cloud' is a go-slow piece that invites you into a seductive jazz-funk dreamworld and lastly, Brazilian Zopelar remixes 'Illusion' into a tumbling bit of boogie-tinged house funk.

Find A Way is a vibrant work from seasoned musicians whose virtuoso playing brings every track to life in a heartwarming fashion.

‘ ‘I Can’t Stop’ meanders from kinky bass & breaks, to deconstructed dubstep and trap; causing more facial expressions in six minutes than ever thought possible. Nair’s hybridized methods continue to shine through in ‘Yoland And His Tortoise’ - a trippy and colourful dream told through nuance in sound. The EP then closes off with the laid-back grooves of ‘Urquoise’ - a hypnotising ritual best practiced in nature.

Some things are just not meant to be, but that doesn’t stop them happening anyway, such is the case with Mexican/Canadian punk-techno duo ALI X x XIMENA who unwittingly crossed streams in 2016. In just the past two years the inspired and experienced duo have unleashed a relentless barrage of funky and skewed audio/video bricolage. Their first session together, along with compatriot Theo Magus, produced the single “Let’s Get Naked” for Tiga’s Turbo label, and what followed was an orgy of remixes for labels Nein and Roam, Bottom Forty, Wonder Stories, Phisica and Shara, and reworks and collabs with artists of weird like-minds Nark, Tkuz, Fausto, Shit, and others both esoteric and mainstream.
ALI X is no stranger to the impenetrable darks and blinding lights having taken his former band Azari & III from the streets to the limelight, and his own extensive back catalog excessively demonstrates this, while XIMENA’s vague history only intensifies the strange murk that enshrouds her, at once both fiercely hermetic and violently sociable, her internalized poetic meanderings clash nicely with her gushing DJ performances. When combined, the couple’s punky ‘screw-it’ attitude juxtaposed with a funky troubled lovers vibe provides for challenging encounters rewarded by unexpected leaps of freedom.
The Welcome To My World EP shows the journeys Ali X x Ximena can take you on, from slugging bouts of confusion and disorder to the heart pounding grit of dark and cavernous dance floors, each track on the album from original to remix shows off the cool and independent techno style of Mexico perfectly.

Shall Not Fade welcomes Melbourne based DJ and producer Loure to the family for Memories In Strobes EP, four tracks of elated and explorative house. The Australian has cultivated an enigmatic presence with his jazzy, deep-house style, although the listener will hear hints of influence from electro to breakbeat on the new EP.

The opening track, "Grip", shows off the best of Loure's skills. Glorious sweeping pads and faded breaks make for a blissed out vibe in this intricately produced hands-in-the-air favourite. It melts into "Two Dimes Deep", which continues the spaced-out deep house energy but with more bite, teasing bits of electro in its firm bassline.

"Inner-Side" is pushed forward by driving house rhythms, covered by French-style filtered vocals to create a euphoric club track. Closing it out is "Breath of Light", constructed from a shuffling and constantly moving beat and euphoric pads which swoop down from above, with a growling acidic edge battling against them for centre stage.

On June 29th 2023, Jeremiah Chiu walked into the Vintage Synthesizer Museum (vsm) in Highland Park, Los Angeles, with no plan more specific than "let"s fire this stuff up and see what happens." Exploring the VSM"s vast collection of classic, rare and staple synthesizers, he would sequence, trigger, and layer the machines together with help from VSM founder/curator Lance Hill. The resulting album - In Electric Time - was recorded in just two days, and edited to completion in the two days following. It was captured fully analog by engineer Ben Lumsdaine, who contributes performances on a few tracks himself. Cooper Crain (of Bitchin Bajas) makes an appearance as well; but ultimately the collection is an intuitive expression of organic electronic conceptualized and created in-context by Chiu alone, as he calls on a lifetime of work in sound synthesis to pain a fulgent, refreshingly undercut sequence of cinematic sketches and in-process themes. In some ways, In Electric Time reflects the directness of Raymond Scott"s electronic studio recordings - with sharp cuts and room chatter - and, in others, it conjures the in-the moment- magic of Harmonia.

French Psych-JAZZ-Soul-FUNK original soundtrack for initial soft erotic drama from 1973, later re-edited into "Sex Revolution" hardcore!"Jeu de Dames, la libération des femmes" (1973), a film by director Christian Lara, is a vaguely subversive charm flick that won't be remembered for a long time. An amusing detail, however, is that Georges de Caunes, father of Antoine de Caunes, the famous French TV personality, plays the lead role alongside Danielle Palmero. It's just one of a number of naïve films that, without being erotic, is sufficiently olé-olé that it failed to find a place in theaters on the traditional circuit. Faced with this commercial failure, the unscrupulous producer at the time, anxious to save his investments, decided to re-edit the film so that it could be screened in the X-rated circuit. He rechristened the film "Sex Revolution" in a more racy style, inserting more hardcore scenes to appeal to fans of the genre. Although Georges de Caunes is no longer credited on the poster or in the credits of "Sex Revolution", he finds himself, in spite of himself, promoted to lead actor in a porn movie, much to the delight of his son Antoine de Caunes, who is still dreaming 50 years later of finally being able to watch this forgotten masterpiece of the 7th art. The film seems to be a dud (pn: the author haven't seen it), but as for the music, Jean Claudric is particularly inspired and offers us one of the best French jazz funk soundtracks, which would not blush at the comparison with the best of the genre, such as Michel Legrand's "Un homme est mort", or Jean-Pierre Mirouze's "Le mariage collectif", previously released by Born Bad.Four short tracks, one with pyschedelic touches, the secomd more funky, the third a bit soul-jazzy, the fourth a French typical melancholic-melodic one makes a hot 7"-EP.
