Escalate is a vegan, straight-edge hardcore band out Hungary, formed in 2020. They are the first and only fully vegan, straight-edge band in the country’s history. Their goal was to bring radical vegan and leftist ideas to the scene. The band is inspired by the political XVX bands of the ’90s and early 2000s just as much as current heavy hardcore bands. When the pandemic restrictions got lifted, Escalate started to play around Hungary and neighboring countries. In a three-year span, they managed to release a demo tape, a 7” EP called The Damage Is Done, and their songs were featured on two international straight-edge compilations. They also finished five tours across ten European countries. Now in 2024, Escalate is ready to take the next step in collaboration with New Age Records and show the world their best and most mature record so far. The band’s first full-length is titled Consequences and contains eight blistering tracks mastered by Scott Crouse (earth Crisis).

With a mission in mind, Speed is setting out to put Australian hardcore on the map. Formed in 2019, the Sydney-based band has a no-holds-barred approach and enticing sound that makes them standouts in the genre. Womad 1982: “It was a simple idea, to create a festival of all the brilliant music and art made all over the world, stuff made outside of the mainstream — music that wasn’t getting on the radio and was even harder to find in record stores.

We also wanted to encourage collaborations between some of the indie artists we had invited and the world music artists that in turn became a great platform for experimentation and later the inspiration for Real World Records. At the beginning most of the music industry professionals told us that we had no chance of making this dream work, we had all the wonderful naïve misguided optimism of the young, and were convinced that we would prove all the cynics wrong.

For its first year it was run out of the rundown farmhouse I was renting as a studio just north of Bath. I remember well the moment we announced the festival to the press who came … for a session with the Burundi drummers whose deep thunderous and hypnotic rhythms pounded … across our sleepy valley … farmers were worried about the impact on the milk yield and of over arousing their bulls.” — Peter Gabriel

Forty years later, the festival has been hosted in more than 30 countries. As well as presenting and celebrating the huge array of art forms the planet has to offer, a central aim of Womad’s many festivals is to promote cross-cultural awareness and tolerance.

Merge Records is thrilled to release the 35th anniversary edition of Neurotica, the 1987 power pop and alternative rock opus by Redd Kross. This reissue includes the original album, remastered by JJ Golden (Pearl Jam, Thee Oh Sees), as well as 12 previously unreleased demos from the era (rediscovered recently in the archives of the band's original A&R guy, Geoffrey Weiss). The double vinyl edition-the album on translucent turquoise, the demos on translucent orange-arrives in a slick gatefold jacket.For Neurotica, brothers Jeff and Steven McDonald enlisted a grand crew of musicians that included guitarist Robert Hecker, keyboardist Paul Roessler (Screamers, Nervous Gender), and Roy McDonald (The Muffs) on drums. And in the producer's chair guiding the young bucks? Tommy Erdelyi, aka Tommy Ramone, one of the originators of punk rock melody. Unshakeable hooks on tracks like "Peach Kelli Pop" and title track "Neurotica" would inspire rave reviews at the time of the album's original release in 1987. The L.A. Times' Craig Lee wrote: "In an age when too many bands base their music either on calculated career moves or heavy-handed pretensions, Redd Kross is as breezy as a kiss in the wind, a band born to rock in a world that forgot how." Decades later, Pitchfork would revisit the album with a glowing write-up: "Pop culture nostalgia was to Redd Kross what LSD was to the Butthole Surfers; their music was delivered with just as furious a passion, but their love for Beatles-esque pop harmony shone through as much as any punk sensibility, and their Kinks influences, entirely free of irony, served as lyrical substance over their powerful, hi-octane hooks." DJ Quik is a giant of West Coast hip-hop. With his fourth album Rhythm-Al-Ism he created his masterpiece, a perfect hip-hop album. Never before pressed on vinyl, IBM 1401, A User's Manual, is one of Jóhann Jóhannsson’s
most loved works. Released in 2006, the decade since its release has seen Jóhann
establish himself as one of the most important composers in the World today,
most notably scoring movies such as Arrival, Sicario and The Theory of Everything.

Inspired by the work his father did in the sixties when chief maintenance engineer of one
of Iceland’s first computers, Jóhann originally wrote IBM 1401, A User's Manual to accompany
a dance piece by long-standing collaborator and friend, Erna Ómarsdóttir. For this album release,
he rewrote it for a sixty-piece string orchestra, with a new final movement (built around a poem by
Dorothy Parker) and incorporating both electronics, and reel-to-reel recordings made
by his father and friends in 1971 of an enormous IBM 1401 mainframe computer singing
the hymn Ísland Ögrum Skorið by Sigvaldi Kaldalóns as it was being decommissioned.

The first ever pressing of IBM 1401, A User's Manual comes in a deluxe gatefold sleeve,
having been reworked by Chris Bigg (v23) from his original design. Pressed on clear vinyl,
two album tracks recorded in 2010 with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra at the Rudolfinum, Dvorák Hall in Prague have also been added and are exclusive to this release.

An importantly historic 1993 moment in west coast gangster rap, which brought together the 2 main infamous gangs of LA. The goal was to create an outlet for gang members to release their frustrations with each other on records rather than on the streets. Actual gang members — Crips from Compton, Watts and Long Beach, and Bloods from Inglewood and Los Angeles — auditioned for the group and the best MCs were chosen for the album. All proceeds from the initial Bangin On Wax album sales went towards local schools and parks for the children. Now 30 years later, the original single LP changes hands for over £100, but for black Friday, it’s now available with extra tracks which only appeared on the CD, now as a 2LP, with one red, and one blue vinyl. Limited to 1000 numbered units, only for this special day.
