Singing black-lit liturgies of bog bodies caked in mud, entranced by nocturnal landscapes flickering in the moon-glow and powered by queer enchantment, Tristwch y Fenywod are a Welsh-language gothic avant-rock power-coven. Exhumed from the depths of Leeds’ experimental underground, the trio consist of Gwretsien Ferch Lisbeth (Guttersnipe, The Ephemeron Loop), Leila Lygad (Hawthonn) and Sidni Sarffwraig (Slaylor Moon, The Courtneys).

Stark, striking and bewitching, Tristwch y Fenywod’s self-titled album is their debut studio recording, following just 10 gigs and a live demo. Formed in 2022, Tristwch y Fenywod ("The Sadness of Women”) record exclusively in the Welsh language, conjuring an eldritch, subterranean, alien folk music played on dual zither, electronic drums and bass guitar. With towering, siren-like vocals curling around the Welsh consonants, accompanied by stark, martial rhythms and swirling claw-plucked strings, Tristwch y Fenywod feels like an early 4AD recording dredged from the waters of an Anglesey swamp. The effect is simultaneously chilling and stirring.

The eight tracks on the record constitute what feels like a recently rediscovered, unholy grail of edgy, atmospheric, occult feminist goth emissions. Gwretsien’s dual-zither playing scatters melodic fragments and spirals of harmony around the decimated space opened up by the lugubrious bass playing and pounding, brooding drum pads. Coupled with the Welsh vocal, Tristwch y Fenywod embody a new, unique Celtic darkwave sound, equal parts Pornography-era The Cure, Svitlana Nianio’s haunted hammered string-work and the dark beauty of Dead Can Dance or This Mortal Coil. Opener Blodyn Gwyrdd feels like the last ride of Princess Ukok, with lumbering bass and 6/8 rhythms in procession to the event horizon with an entreating, impassioned vocal and surprising lyrical theme. The doomed dancing of the zither provides the mysterious melodic bedrock throughout the album, particularly on Ferch Gyda’r Llygaid Du’s heavy funereal sway and the slowly building, paroxysmal banshee breakdown of Awen: an astonishing swell of thrilling chaos.

The album was recorded and produced by Ross Halden and the band at Hohm Studio, Bradford, Summer 2023.

While far from a household name in reggae, Judah Eskender Tafari cultivated a loyal fanbase and respectable catalogue during his recording career. The Studio One single, "Rastafari Tell You" sits at the top of a small set of deep cuts he recorded for Coxson Dodd's famed studio starting in 1978. These have continued to find a place at roots reggae sound systems and DJ rub-a-dub parties after nearly five decades. The earnest lyrics and spiritual mission of these early recordings would define Judah's entire career, extending through the decades to "Great Escape", a new Daptone 45 produced by label stalwart Victor Axelrod. The song alludes to the Old Testament in a vision of mankind gone astray, trying to escape the confines of Earth for salvation. Axelrod provides a lush roots backdrop against which Eskender shines in a way we haven't heard in years.

Citirax is excited to introduce the debut LP from the Los Angeles-based duo Op-art, a project born out of the creative isolation of the lockdown era. The band, the brainchild of Andrew Clinco—known for his work with Drab Majesty—was originally named using the acronym "Oblique Pleasures Amidst Rough Times," a nod to the challenging times that inspired its formation.

In Andrew’s own words, the album “represents a sonic analog to the visual art movement of the 1960s,” meaning it is both densely layered and psychedelic, yet aims to capture a sense of minimalism in its tradition, theory, and conceptual approach. Op-art’s sound is heavily influenced by the New Wave genre, drawing inspiration from artists such as John Foxx, Martin Dupont (with whom Andrew has collaborated on a track), Experimental Products, and early OMD.

True to their commitment to authentic analog sound, Op-art eschews digital plug-ins in favor of a wide array of analog synthesizers and outboard rack effects units. The album features a diverse collection of synthesizers including the EML 500, Arp Odyssey, Arp Omni2, Jupiter 6, Sh-02, Sh-101, Moog Rogue, and Roland Promars. Each piece of equipment contributes to the album’s lush, rich soundscapes, creating a tactile and immersive listening experience.

The Final Act, the title of the LP, is a testament to the duo's ability to blend catchy melodies with profound emotional depth. The album offers an introspective journey through themes of time passing, romantic entanglements, and existential reflections on an apocalyptic scale. With its evocative sound and thoughtful lyrics, The Final Act promises to resonate deeply with listeners, making it a compelling and significant debut from Op-art.

Lake Mary is the moniker of Chaz Prymek, a guitarist, composer, free improvisor and painter currently based in the US. Through spacious personal hymns exploring the wilderness of deep emotional narrative, Prymek’s long-form compositions and improvisations are boundless meditations on the landscapes, river ways, and wildlife, both external and personal. Perhaps most widely known as a founding member of the group Fuubutsushi, Prymek's work as Lake Mary leans sometimes more slow, open and pastoral, sometimes more visceral with prepared guitar and synthesizers, but can always be characterized by patience. A board member of Dismal Niche Arts, and founder of Yardwork Presents, Prymek's focus on curation and community for exploratory and expansive music and arts spills over into all his sonic works.

Daniel Wyche is a Chicago-based guitarist, composer, and improviser. Working with a wide range of physical preparations, extended techniques, and pedal instruments, his solo recordings and live performances are characterized by long-form structured improvisations and multichannel guitar. He has been a curator with the Elastic Arts Foundation in Chicago since 2013, where is work has been described as “crucial” by Dusted and “vital” by the Chicago Reader. In March of 2020, Daniel co-founded The Quarantine Concerts in collaboration with Chicago’s Experimental Sound Studio. The series has been widely praised as a model for online/streaming live music. Along with his solo guitar work, Daniel is involved in several ongoing collaborations, most notably the trio of Wyche, Mark Shippy (US Maple), and Ben Baker Billington, as well as new work with longtime collaborators like Patrick Shiroishi, Lake Mary, and many others.

Shabaka says he's done playing saxophone--including in his beloved groups Sons of Kemet, the Comet is Coming and Shabaka and the Ancestors--and his new solo album bears that out: it's filled with spiritual ruminations delivered on clarinet and flutes, a deeply felt work that is much different in tone than his firebrand sax work. I saw him play Pharoah Sanders' parts of Promises at the Hollywood Bowl in September, and wept for most of the performance; this album feels like a spiritual successor to Shabaka inhabiting the role of spiritual jazz's most revered monk. Featuring contributions from Moses Sumney--who sings his ass off--Brandee Younger, Carlos Nino, Ndudzo Makathini and a show-stopping flute performance by Andre 3000, this is my favorite album of the year so far in a walk. Can't wait for everyone to hear it.

Ephemera is the debut album by Fergus Jones, the artist formerly known as Perko, an Edinburgh-born, Copenhagen-based producer, DJ, and founder of the Felt record label. The nine-track release is out on Numbers on 18 October 2024. Ephemera was developed with collaborative energy as the creative priority, produced by Jones alongside an extensive list of like-minded musicians, lyricists and vocalists including Huerco S, James K, Koreless, Birthmark, Eldon and Withdrawn of Bristol’s Cold Light crew, Laila Sakini and Lia T. The album embodies Jones’ inner journey as he ranges further than ever sonically and emotionally, emphasising instinct, intensity, tactility and rapture. “Heima” was written and produced with Huerco S and James K between Iceland, Copenhagen and the United States’ East Coast. Developed during and named after the same Icelandic artist residency that birthed Perko & Huerco S’ debut collaboration “Prang,” “Heima” is a shimmering piece of fortified trip-pop featuring vocals from James K, appearing here following solo releases for AD 93 and collaborations with Yves Tumor. “Tight Knit” aligns Jones’ graceful production with the raw emotions thundering from the performances of Birthmark, Eldon and Withdrawn of Cold Light, the shadowy Bristolian collective channelling the city’s deep sonic history into an equally rich future. Anthem Of The Sun is not a live album. Nor is it a studio album. It is truly a hybrid, unprecedented at the time and never replicated. It is both types of album and was created through genius production techniques, exceptional musicianship and inspiration.

There were two versions of Anthem Of The Sun and also of Aoxomoxoa, the Dead’s 1969 follow-up to Anthem. ... The original mix [of Anthem] was muddier, but to my ears this was part of its draw. It worked well with the live vibe the Dead brought to their second studio album. Now, after over 20 years of listening to both mixes quite equally, I feel they complement one another perfectly. There’s plenty of room in the sonic landscape to hear both mixes and appreciate them both for their subtle, and not-so-subtle, differences.

This new Vinyl Me, Please slab of wax is the original mix and a rare opportunity to hear the 1968 intention mastered from the original analog tape. There’s always a lot to be excited about in the Grateful Dead world, and this is certainly one of those things.

Fractal visions of war and innovation spike and recede from and into the surfaces of reality being bent and guiding the eyes, ears, touch towards a laboratory in the year 1961. A nuclear expert, Don Lewis, receives orders to decrypt the mysterious black dodecagonal disc known as Fortec and the extraterrestrial biology unearthed in Roswell. He joins a team disassembling Fortec and studying the recurrent dodecahedral patterns linked to the human nervous system.
Through dismantling and probing, the team cycles through a saecular search devoid of finite conclusions, limited by Earth’s intellectual and technological prowess. One 1960s night, Lewis, while meddling with Fortec’s cyborganic innards, accidentally electrifies himself. His cyclotron and missile experience guides him to circuit-bend Fortec, stirring the entity from a mechanical slumber. Lewis and Fortec communicate in resonances, until it drifts back into a tranquil stasis.
The US Defense and contractors, unbeknownst to them, observe this breakthrough. They later permit Lewis to exit military service as the Air Force forms the Foreign Technology Division. Concurrently, MJ12 evolves into CY12, delving into second-order cybernetics. Lewis clandestinely keeps working on Fortec fragments, transitioning from military engineer to musician, pioneering the LEO module, a fusion of Fortec’s essence and audio engineering.
He shares his insights with Roland founder Ikutaro Kakehashi, aiding the creation of the iconic TR-808. Meanwhile, Fortec branches out, coining “Cyberspace” – a collective illusion of liberty unshackled by physical, political, or spiritual bounds, anchored in the equitable distribution of The Golden Ratio across realities. Yet “Cyberspace” morphs into a chaotic truth reservoir, spilling over into deception.

The vastness of one's internal life meets the vastness of space, and in that moment those perspectives fuse in a state of wonder and curiosity. Space As An Instrument, the new album by French artist and musician Félicia Atkinson, invites listeners to explore the phantasmic landscapes created in such transformative encounters, when the mind is open and receptive to its environment. Like being absorbed by the immensity of the night sky, this music dilates the imagination and helps us to sit comfortably in the mystery of the ineffable.We are guided through Space As An Instrument by the piano, its alinear story told through restrained, iterative melodies that become entwined with the sounds at the music's margins - a wisp of electronics, a pinprick of an enunciated consonant. They were recorded on Atkinson's phone, which was placed next to the keys, or behind her, with the sound of the room bleeding through to give a sense of the place and time of the encounter. She describes these sessions as meetings where she and the piano commune to co-create these spiraling phrases and vaporous dissonances moment by moment. Complicating this dynamic is the presence of digital pianos, which exist in the surreal space of diodes and LED displays. They act as avatars of their three-dimensional counterparts: nowhere and everywhere simultaneously.Still, the inhabited world of people, water, and wind can be heard throughout Space As An Instrument. Often these recordings are integrated into the backdrop of electronics, or reduced to the sound of movements whose physical forms are obscured: the microphone straining against a forceful gust on "Sorry," arhythmic footsteps traversing an invisible terrain on "Pensées Magiques." These field recordings take us to the brink of synesthetic experience, allowing us to glimpse with our ear the topography of the imagination. Jazz is an art form that routinely asks performers to be the guy behind the guy. Louie, Basie, Dizzy all played for others before they became names themselves. Another famous guy behind the guy, Teo Macero, has a little less complicated, but he had more to do with shaping and re-shaping modern music than just his work with Charles Mingus. Part of the reason “Take Five” is considered one of the most famous songs of the 20th century is how Dave Brubeck and his Quartet played it, but it’s also because Macero was behind the glass, slowly turning knobs moving things up at some points, and down at others. It would be enough to produce Time Out, but he also helped mold Thelonious Monk’s sound during his time on Columbia in the 1960s into one of the master’s most fruitful periods. The man also produced Bitches Brew — yes, Bitches Brew, too! Macero isn’t one of the marquee names in the Bible of American Music, but he was an apostle for several of its greatest prophets. Then, in 1957, came Teo. Macero’s warm tenor sax playing is a big part of that, but so is Mal Waldron’s piano, Teddy Charles on the vibraphone, Jerry Segal on drums, and, trusted Mose Allison sideman. Everybody on this album knew exactly what they were meant to do, and they came together to create something lovely that deserves more appreciation than it has been given since its release in ’57.

Discovered by Shelby Singleton, Jeannie C. Riley rose to fame upon recording Tom T. Hall's "Harper Valley P.T.A." The track (which was recorded live in two takes) shot to #1 on the Country and Pop charts in 1968, making the crossover hit singer the first woman to hold the spots simultaneously. Remastered in mono from the original tapes, this deluxe version includes an additional Clark Bentley track, "Yesterday All Day Long."

Intervention Records is thrilled to announce its first jazz release, Bobby Bradford and his CuZns' Freddie Ain't Ready.

Freddie Ain't Ready is about identity. It is about discovering, developing, and embracing who you are. That is an act that makes us examine if we are indeed who we thought ourselves to be, and where does this leave us? Does a glimpse of the truth set us free?

Freddie was recorded live-to-two-track analog at Hollywood's legendary EastWest (formerly Western) Studios by Steve Genewick and Joe Harley. Custom Flux Magnetics head stacks were used, with no editing, limiting, or compression. Just the highest resolution delivery possible of live sound to your home. Mastering and lacquers are cut by Kevin Gray at CoHEARent Audio, and boutique press RTI delivers dead quiet 180g vinyl. No expense was spared, and laborious attention to detail ensured that the listener is transported into the studio and the creative experience.

His discography is extensive and includes classics such as Ornette Coleman's ''Science Fiction'' and ''Broken Shadows.'' Additionally, he holds a B.M. from Huston-Tillotson University (Austin, Texas), and was a jazz educator of note at Pomona College (Claremont, California) for 44 years. Bobby is currently 90 years of age and is still performing and smokin' on his cornet.

This recording project was initiated when drummer-percussionist Garth Powell (Zen Widow, AudioQuest) proposed a performance with CuZns (Bobby Bradford and William Roper) on the long-time New Music Sunday's series hosted by Open Gate Theatre in Los Angeles. This was extremely well-received, and a grand time was had by all.
