Kiydrah's vocals have a smooth/raspy PBR&B, Neo-Soul, & Jazzy sound. „Simulation“ is the collaborative effort with French producer Breiss including a remix by Dusty of the well-known Jazz Liberatorz. Loft is an instrumental hip hop album inspired by the free and spiritual jazz played by the New York loft movement of the 1960s and 1970s. A difficult time, where economic decline and poor housing politics somehow led to some amazing, innovative music, often self-recorded to cassette tapes. This music was recorded to tape on a loft as well, far away from the original loft scene. Written during the corona pandemic, this album also emerged from a difficult time. The do-it-yourself spirit and freedom of the loft movement inspired this process a lot, and it was recorded mostly with instruments from that era. There are no static BPMs or software instruments on this LP, everything is kept as analog and authentic as possible. Vintage electric pianos, tape loops and hardware effects emulate the sounds of the 1970s and the
aesthetics of hip hop sampling.

The album features independent jazz legends Idris Ackamoor, Ralph Thomas and Wendell Harrison. Chicago-born Idris Ackamoor was a founding member of The Pyramids, an influential jazz ensemble that was formed in the 1970s, and still releases critically acclaimed music today. Another Chicago musician, multi-instrumentalist Ralph Thomas is best known for his 1980 cult-classic album Eastern Standard Time. Detroit-native Wendell Harrison founded the important record label and jazz collective Tribe Records, and, like Ralph Thomas, also performed together with Sun Ra among many others. All three musicians have been very inspiring to me, and are important to the legacy of free and spiritual jazz. I’m so grateful and
honored to have them featured on these loft tapes.

Ol’ Burger Beats plays: Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer 200A electric pianos, Sequential Prophets, ARP Odyssey and Moog synthesizers, ring modulator and delay pedals, tape loops, vinyl percussion samples, drum machines and various percussion instruments.

Recorded in Vatne and Oslo, Norway.

HHV Records Organic Grooves

HHV is a mail-order business for records and clothing, founded in 2002 by Thomas Ulrich in Berlin-Friedrichshain. The company’s very first steps were made at the end of the 1990s, in a time when the world’s knowledge was still slumbering in solid shelves packed with encyclopedias and when rare hip hop vinyls were much further than just a mouse click away. It was in those days when Thomas Ulrich and his friends were completely absorbed in records – listening to them, collecting them, loving them. Quickly, the collecting and swapping turned into a passion, eventually turning into a business.

Hip hop from the U.S., especially off-mainstream hip hop, was hard to get, and even harder to get on vinyl, let alone the costs you had to pay. The idea to solve all those problems was the origin of what was to become hhv in 2002. Our range of products, originating in rap-music, was quickly to expand in accordance to our employee’s likings – we grew into the direction of soul and funk, later towards all facets of pop music. More and more genres were starting to enrich our repertoire, while the criteria were no longer based on a certain style, but rather on the music’s quality.

This applies not only to our music but also to the clothes and shoes that were finding their ways into our product line. Inspired by our advertising campaign’s art works, we started to print images designed by LGB5 on shirts, sweaters, hoodies, bags and baseball caps, creating a small apparel-line referring to what’s dear to us: Beats and sneakers.

When looking for our formula for success, you’ll find it close to the heart: it’s passion and love for what we do, nurtured and grown over the years. Those expecting a large-scale enterprise or an empire behind HHV, will be disappointed: We’re just a bunch of normal people, true to our beloved Friedrichshain neighbourhood. We get to work by bike and many of us have been spotted pushing buggies through the streets. We’re looking and planning ahead – in the most natural manner.
