One of London’s most intriguing labels ventures a dark fantasy horror/gamer soundtrack by its co-founder, Lugh O’Neill for an experimental film of the same name by Kevin Brennan. Lugh follows a highlight of the label’s ‘Apocope’ compilation with his most enigmatic work, scored in a back and forth with director Brennan to locate some of his most curious and haunted recordings. Made to accompany the film’s part documentary, part scripted format, the music follows a storyline about real life imitating gamer life, and vice versa, outlined by the label as grappling “with the idea of virtual violence as a form of expression and identity whilst scrutinising the predominantly male ‘gamer-bro’ archetype synonymous with these online cultures.” As with ‘Apocope’ earlier in 2021, the concept does not get in the way of enjoyment of the music, acting on its own merits as a steeply absorbing suite of suggestive soundtrack and finely sculpted dark ambient music. The ‘Erangel Ost’ finds its closest aesthetic corollary in Lugh’s ‘Re Munus’ LP of 2020, but loses that LP’s more frantic aspects in favour of an extremely slow burning appeal, where scenes unfold at a glacial pace that’s hard not get sucked in by. Its 10 parts unfold thru 37 minutes, describing a fleeting play of shadow tones and transportive spatial settings. Any violence is implied and not explicit, perhaps seeping thru in the unsheathed sword scythes and keening guitar noise of ‘Crystalline Dawn’, the bellyaches of ‘Lost Boys’ and the beastly grind of ‘Moan Jiro,’ but more often reserved to the peripheries where it suggests the tension leading up to the act, and its aftermath, especially in the highlights of ‘Idle,’ the guttural lurk of ‘Forest Lure,’ and exquisite designs of ’Sentinel.’ Promo

It was inevitable that a successful game like Darius would receive a sequel, and in 1989 lucky gamers were treated to Darius II cabinets in their arcades. It has since gone on to become a fan favourite, and rightly so: you can’t mention scrolling shooters without mentioning Darius II.The game was ported over to gaming consoles in Japan the following year, and reached U.S. shores in 1991, under the title Sagaia, with a re-arranged soundtrack and different level layouts. But for purists the arcade version remained top dog, and it is with this in mind that we have pressed the original arcade version soundtrack for Darius II onto vinyl, making this its debut on the format!

Featuring liner notes from composer Hisayoshi Ogura and journalist Anthony John Agnello, and decored with rare production artwork within, this gatefold release of a bona fide shoot ‘em up soundtrack classic is not one fans of video game music and quintessential cabinet gaming will want to miss!

Way back in 2001, we witnessed monkey mayhem unfurl, by way of a topsy-turvy gameplay mechanic that probably sounded pretty wacky on paper. Super Monkey Ball was totally bizarre and absolutely delightful then — and now, here we are 20 years later, writing about it in a product description. However, for as much love as the characters and the world receive, the unsung gem of this series is its music, which has never been better than in this incarnation, supremely titled, Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania. It’s an evolution of the catchy tunes from the OG version, presented here as dancy, trancy, lovely and chill tracks that are incredibly enjoyable to absorb on a lazy Saturday afternoon. In all honesty we wouldn’t be surprised if a few of these ditties snuck into an Electric Daisy Carnival set — they’re that delectably bouncy. iam8bit couldn’t be happier to present this collection, in collaboration with Sega Music, presented with a nod to Andy Warhol’s legendary Velvet Underground album design and done up here with cheeky luster by fellow superstars, Little Friends of Printmaking. It’s a bountiful bazaar of colorfulness and alien aesthetics as if a Kool-Aid fever dream collided with unicorn nightmares. Wacky worlds, however, are only good as their wacky soundtracks, and herein rests one of the most fabulously fun soundtracks iam8bit has ever released on wax. Composer Thesis Sahib is a mad genius of creatively conjuring sounds from just about anything, and with Spinch he looks to children’s toys, retro and modern, for that extra special audiosauce. (Yes, he recorded toys and it sounds awesome!) We’re so very proud to present this gem on tricolor vinyl, in an obscenely vibrant die-cut jacket design by Spinch creator, Jesse Jacobs.
