The story of Eyeshield 21 follows the protagonist Sena, the whipping boy of his classmates, who wants to earn respect by joining a club at the start of the school year. He crosses paths with Hiruma, head of the American soccer club, who recruits him for his exceptional running skills. They must quickly find 11 other players, as the inter-school championship begins in 24 hours. Numerous artists and composers were involved in creating the theme music and accompanying songs, including Kosuke Morimoto, who contributed to various theme songs for Fullmetal Alchemist and One Piece. Any fan of the series will have a strong feeling of nostalgia when they recall the music that marked them during their teenage years. The very Pop-rock and J-pop tones will remind them of those after-school afternoons watching episodes of this epic anime on Game One. Since the dawn of the trombone (Early 15th century or so according to a quick Google search), trombonists all over the world have been compelled to create a wide assortment of brass-powered notes, both sweet and sour.

Developer Holy Wow made it their divine mission to document this phenomenon through the medium of interactive electronic entertainment. Trombone Champ is a celebration of the beauty and power of music — not just well-crafted, technically proficient music, but passionate, messy, and goofy melodies, too. Music is about self expression, and self expression simply isn’t always tidy and neat.

This LP is iam8bit’s humble attempt to capture that wonderfully weird energy on wax. The Trombone Champ Vinyl Soundtrack is a 1xLP packed full of sweet, sweet brass-powered tunes, selected and performed (excellently, by the way — no flubbed notes here) by the Holy Wow team themselves. Once more, Laced Records and Jagex clan up to bring fans a soundtrack from the RuneScape universe. God Wars Dungeon features 11 heroic tracks from the two high-level dungeons, composed by Adam Bond and Ian Taylor.

The vinyl edition contains two 180g, audiophile-quality vinyl discs in turquoise blue and purple — one for each dungeon. The deluxe gatefold sleeve artwork features Nex and the other God Wars Dungeon generals as they face off in battle.

Vermintide 2 is a critically lauded first-person co-op action game that sees players smash, bash, and slice their way through the Chaos army and Skaven rat-men. Jesper Kyd (Assassin’s Creed, Borderlands, Hitman) amassed a broad palette of violent percussive sounds in creating his propulsive score. Panzer Dragoon: Remake is a faithful recreation of the 1995 Sega Saturn 3D rail-shooter with brand new graphics, updated controls and new features. The game offers both the original 1995 soundtrack, composed by the late Yoshitaka Azuma, as well as newly arranged tracks by composer Saori Kobayashi, whose previous works include the soundtracks for Panzer Dragoon Saga and Panzer Dragoon Orta. Kobayashi respects Azuma’s work while adding her own style to the arrangements.

Joel Baylis shares a brief insight into his vision for the soundtrack and the outcomes: “My goal when writing the music for ‘Cassette Beasts‘ was to make something that felt somewhere between a role-playing game soundtrack and an 80’s synth rock album. Despite its influences, I feel like it ended up being rather unique. It’s quite hard to pin a genre onto these tracks and the collection itself varies greatly in vibes as well as styles.”

Baylis is also enthusiastic about the physical release of the “Cassette Beasts” soundtrack on beautiful purple and mint green coloured double vinyl: “The LP contains the best of each aspect of the game’s soundtrack, thoughtfully put together to offer something that will look great in your collection, and sound great under the needle.” And while the entire game is revolving around cassettes, Black Screen Records are sure taking care of this with a limited tape edition. You’re all backed-up for the monster hunt!

It’s a bountiful bazaar of colorfulness and alien aesthetics as if a Kool-Aid fever dream collided with unicorn nightmares. Wacky worlds, however, are only good as their wacky soundtracks, and herein rests one of the most fabulously fun soundtracks iam8bit has ever released on wax. Composer Thesis Sahib is a mad genius of creatively conjuring sounds from just about anything, and with Spinch he looks to children’s toys, retro and modern, for that extra special audiosauce. For Mega Ran, Black Materia: The Remake is the culmination of a more than decade-long career making hip hop tributes to video games. Following the viral success of his original Black Materia album in 2011, Ran left his job as a middle school teacher to pursue music full time.
