Ten years in the making, Black Materia: The Remake is a hip hop tribute to Final Fantasy VII, one of the greatest video games of all time.

Video game rapper Raheem “Mega Ran” Jarbo and record label GameChops are releasing Black Materia: The Remake, a 22-track album of original rap songs inspired by Final Fantasy VII Remake, the award-winning 2020 reboot of one of the most popular video games of all time.

Featuring twenty five guest producers and rappers, Black Materia: The Remake takes listeners on a hip hop journey through Final Fantasy VII. The role playing game centers on a group of heroic revolutionaries fighting to bring down Shinra, an energy company that’s destroying the planet for profit.

Black Materia: The Remake retells the video game’s acclaimed story through narrative lyricism and powerful performances. The beats and backing tracks feature memorable moments from Nobuo Uematsu’s acclaimed Final Fantasy VII score.

Mega Ran is a leading voice in nerdcore hip hop, a subgenre of rap music which focuses on pop culture and video games. He has performed at hundreds of conventions, expos, and music festivals around the world, including Penny Arcade Expo (pax), New York Comic Con (nycc), and South by Southwest (sxsw), where he has rapped about everything from Star Wars to professional wrestling. In 2019, Ran was awarded a Guinness World Record title for the most video game rap songs ever released.

For Mega Ran, Black Materia: The Remake is the culmination of a more than decade-long career making hip hop tributes to video games. Following the viral success of his original Black Materia album in 2011, Ran left his job as a middle school teacher to pursue music full time.

“Final Fantasy 7 is eternal,” Ran says. “The magic surrounding that game will never die. The Black Materia album represents a landmark in the story of Mega Ran; so it was a little nerve-wracking to attempt to revisit it. But I knew if we were going to do it, it had to be bigger. We've all learned so much since 2011, and it's a welcome challenge to get together and showcase that.”

The game’s music team comprised Jesper Kyd (Assassin’s Creed, Hitman), Sascha Dikiciyan & Cris Velasco (dual and individual credits include Quake 2 & 3, Unreal Tournament, Mass Effect 3, God of War 3, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided) and Raison Varner (Borderlands series), all of whom collaborated on the 2009 original. Let’s be real: Spinch (not “spinach” like autocorrect demands) is a really freakin’ weird game. It’s a bountiful bazaar of colorfulness and alien aesthetics as if a Kool-Aid fever dream collided with unicorn nightmares. Wacky worlds, however, are only good as their wacky soundtracks, and herein rests one of the most fabulously fun soundtracks iam8bit has ever released on wax. Composer Thesis Sahib is a mad genius of creatively conjuring sounds from just about anything, and with Spinch he looks to children’s toys, retro and modern, for that extra special audiosauce. Panzer Dragoon: Remake is a faithful recreation of the 1995 Sega Saturn 3D rail-shooter with brand new graphics, updated controls and new features. The game offers both the original 1995 soundtrack, composed by the late Yoshitaka Azuma, as well as newly arranged tracks by composer Saori Kobayashi, whose previous works include the soundtracks for Panzer Dragoon Saga and Panzer Dragoon Orta. Kobayashi respects Azuma’s work while adding her own style to the arrangements.

Available on 2 150g 12” vinyl, this abridged edition features 33 of the most iconic tracks in Shenmue III. It comes in a gatefold and includes a booklet with liner notes (in both English and Japanese) by Yu Suzuki and other members of the Shenmue community, as well as archival artwork. It also includes a digital download code for all 33 tracks.

One of London’s most intriguing labels ventures a dark fantasy horror/gamer soundtrack by its co-founder, Lugh O’Neill for an experimental film of the same name by Kevin Brennan. Lugh follows a highlight of the label’s ‘Apocope’ compilation with his most enigmatic work, scored in a back and forth with director Brennan to locate some of his most curious and haunted recordings. Made to accompany the film’s part documentary, part scripted format, the music follows a storyline about real life imitating gamer life, and vice versa, outlined by the label as grappling “with the idea of virtual violence as a form of expression and identity whilst scrutinising the predominantly male ‘gamer-bro’ archetype synonymous with these online cultures.” As with ‘Apocope’ earlier in 2021, the concept does not get in the way of enjoyment of the music, acting on its own merits as a steeply absorbing suite of suggestive soundtrack and finely sculpted dark ambient music. The ‘Erangel Ost’ finds its closest aesthetic corollary in Lugh’s ‘Re Munus’ LP of 2020, but loses that LP’s more frantic aspects in favour of an extremely slow burning appeal, where scenes unfold at a glacial pace that’s hard not get sucked in by. Its 10 parts unfold thru 37 minutes, describing a fleeting play of shadow tones and transportive spatial settings. Any violence is implied and not explicit, perhaps seeping thru in the unsheathed sword scythes and keening guitar noise of ‘Crystalline Dawn’, the bellyaches of ‘Lost Boys’ and the beastly grind of ‘Moan Jiro,’ but more often reserved to the peripheries where it suggests the tension leading up to the act, and its aftermath, especially in the highlights of ‘Idle,’ the guttural lurk of ‘Forest Lure,’ and exquisite designs of ’Sentinel.’ Promo

Vermintide 2 is a critically lauded first-person co-op action game that sees players smash, bash, and slice their way through the Chaos army and Skaven rat-men. Jesper Kyd (Assassin’s Creed, Borderlands, Hitman) amassed a broad palette of violent percussive sounds in creating his propulsive score. The music leans more towards this hypnotic array of scrapes, cracks, and thumps than it does the orchestral elements traditionally associated with dark fantasy — and is all the more distinct a score for it.

38 tracks (including seven bonus tracks not found on the digital release) have been specially mastered for vinyl, and will be pressed to audiophile-quality, heavyweight 180g discs in ‘Chaos Red’ and ‘Skaven Green’. The album is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Keiichi Suzuki's career as a musician. The entire orchestra is newly recorded and arranged, and Keiichi Suzuki sings on all songs.

Black Screen Records once again teams up with composer Chris Christodoulou and Hopoo Games to release the original soundtrack to Risk of Rain 2 on vinyl. The repress will be available on 3xLP vinyl and comes in a beautiful trifold sleeve with all-new original artwork illustrated by Italian artist Daniele Giardini. All 20 songs have been carefully remastered by Christian Bethge (Risk of Rain, Deadbolt, Divinity: Original Sin II, A Plague Tale) for the vinyl format.

The classic multiplayer rogue-like, Risk of Rain, returns with an extra dimension and more challenging action. No run will ever be the same with randomized stages, enemies, bosses, and items. Deus Ex is one of the most revered games in history, featured on many "best games of all time" lists. It broke new ground with player choice and depth of story for a first-person experience. And the soundtrack, which establishes a unique, futuristic gritty atmosphere, is highly regarded to this day.

Now, two of the original composers, Alexander Brandon and Michiel van den Bos, have returned to the soundtrack they first wrote 20 years ago. In revisiting some of the game's most iconic themes, they have decided to keep some tracks true to the original, touched up using modern production techniques; other tracks are fully reimagined and will give even dedicated fans something new to listen to. It's a celebration of two decades of Deus Ex and a "thank you" to the fans who have kept their love for the game alive over the years.

The Street Fighter™ III: The Collection four-disc box set will include 72 tracks from Street Fighter III: New Generation, 2nd Impact: Giant Attack, and 3rd Strike: Fight For The Future.

Street Fighter III first hit arcades in 1997 with New Generation, retaining only Ryu and Ken while introducing an otherwise brand new cast of characters. The final iteration, 3rd Strike, is widely recognized as one of the greatest fighting games of all time, and generated perhaps the most indelible competitive moment in gaming, with Daigo’s comeback again Justin Wong aka “Evo Moment #37.”

Composers Hideki Okugawa and Yuki Iwai explored a range of high energy dance styles across the three titles, leaning most heavily on jazzy house, jungle and drum’n’bass — with some samba rhythms thrown in for good measure.

Tracks have been specially remastered for vinyl and will be pressed onto four audiophile-quality, heavyweight 180g black discs. These will be housed in individual spined sleeves, contained within a rigid board outer slipcase."

As a shadowy villain plans to destroy all of hero society, Deku and the other students of U.A. Alla Scoperta Dell`America is a 1977 tv documentary dedicated to a puppet builder that represented the travel of Columbus to America. This 40-minute soundtrack may not be as well-known as the music to which Ennio Morricone owes its reputation, but the themes are original and easily get stuck in your head, especially the “Tema d’amore”, a delicacy worthy of his best compositions. Fans will also recognize the signature of Morricone through humor (“Misterioso per Elisa”) and the presence of a whistler (“Finale”). Thanks to its many in-depth qualities, this album should satisfy connoisseurs of Ennio Morricone’s work.
