In the 1950s and 60s, the Cincinnati recording scene was dominated by Syd Nathan’s King label, whose R&B catalogue made it a major player among post-war independents. In its shadow was Fraternity, a smaller concern launched by Harry Carlson in 1954.

The well-respected Carlson set about building an artist roster which reflected his conservative musical taste, scoring smash hits by Cathy Carr and Jimmy Dorsey a couple of years later which established the label as an indie to be reckoned with.

Here, though, we spotlight decidedly non-MOR Fraternity recordings by influential guitar hero Lonnie Mack, soulful girl group the Charmaines, bluesy singer-guitarist Albert Washington, and female duo the 2 Of Clubs.

For those with appetites whetted by this old-fangled 7-inch vinyl sampler, further Fraternity recordings by each of these artists can be found elsewhere in the Ace Records catalogue. For now, though, here’s your chance to enjoy four fine examples of the sound of mid-60s Cincinnati.

By the time singer-songwriter Albert Washington went to record the tracks that would be released on his career-defining LP, Sad and Lonely, in 1973, he was already a veteran on the recording scene. He had singles recorded on a dozen labels, in styles ranging from gospel to blues and soul. Washington (born in Georgia, 1939) made his own guitar out of a gasoline can using rubber bands as strings at the age of seven. After the family moved to Cincinnati, Albert started going to clubs in the area where he was exposed to artists from the likes of B.B. King and Sam Cooke who would inspire him to become a performer. By the mid 1960’s, Washington had started his recording career, cutting several singles for various labels. His 1964 recordings for the VLM label, including the song he wrote called ‘Haven't Got a Friend’, got him noticed in England, and this in turn led to a deal with Fraternity Records in 1966. Lonnie Mack later joined Washington on several singles for Fraternity recorded in 1969. In 1970, he released two singles on the Jewel label before finally recording his first LP (Sad and Lonely) for the Detroit-based label ‘Eastbound Records’ in 1973. Recorded with the Memphis Horns, the tracks on Sad and Lonely are prime southern gospel-infected soul, funk and raw Albert King style blues…bearing the heavy influence of both James Brown’s funk and Otis Redding’s Memphis soul. Albert’s music is full of lament, urban hustle and lost love, the precise guitar strokes alongside Washington's soaring vocals create the mood for the blues to invade the funk parts. The female backup singers’ harmonies are the cherry on top and the album is a funky emotional onslaught with relentless dance grooves from start to end. The outpour of talent featured here on ‘Sad and Lonely’ was carefully produced by Bernie Mendelson (Donald Austin, Melvin Sparks, Ceasar Frazier), engineered by Ronnie Capone (Stax) and then mastered by the legendary Howard Craft. Because of complications from diabetes (Washington lost his sight and went completely blind) he had to put his musical career on and off hiatus…but despite the crippling effects and the tragedies that befell him over the course of his life, Albert remained an upbeat, positive figure. Washington continued to perform in blues clubs around Long Island prior to dying of complications from diabetes on October 23, 1998. ‘Sad and Lonely’ was originally released on Eastbound (whose parent label Westbound had hitmakers such as Funkadelic & the Ohio Players on its roster in 1973). This rare album has now attained a cult status and fetches hefty sums on the collectors-market. Now it’s finally back available as a limited deluxe 180g vinyl edition (1000 copies) featuring the original artwork. Released exclusively for Record Store Day (UK & Europe) 2019, available in participating stores on April 13.

One more extremely obscure 7 inch reissue on EVERLAND MUSIC. Originals are impossible to find, so it actually makes sense to me, to make it available again to all the soul and funk collectors and probably new fans out there. Recorded by the legendary Calvin Arnold, the title track is a groovy, simmering hot funk song as funky as it could be. Early 70s sound, although the music was recorded in 1977. The B side contains a kind of spoken word performance, a phone call, as the title tells you. One guy, certainly the band’s singer, answering a phone call talking to someone whom he refers to as “The Devil” or “Mr. Boogeyman”. There are people in the background laughing. A strange track indeed. The A side indeed is a killer tune and worth the few bucks for this great reissue alone. Funk aficionados will grab a copy anyway.This is a great dancefloor sweeper with a hypnotizing structure, beautiful horn section melodies, an ever pulsating groove, commanding spoken vocals and female singers in between. Clever DJs should grab a copy to make their audience go wild. A nifty little obscurity and worth having for fans of music as black as music can be. Great sound, great interplay, steaming hot performance, this tune has everything you would want and is even a memorable effort. It stands the test of time.

The only woman featured on Worldwide FM’s Sydney broadcast, and having recently produced her first old out all-female showcase featuring musicians, visual artists, poets and DJs, 20-year-old Ella Haber has worked toward her debut for 15 years.

Shocked by a hushed crowd reaction at her first public performance, Ella’s realisation her voice could halt and occupy an audience’s thoughts bleeds into all aspects of her life. With early demos of her debut EP, CLAY, reaching the ears of Brisbane-raised, London-based musician Jordan Rakei, the recent Ninja Tune signee - impressed with her vibrant songwriting and compositions - lent his production chops to the project, arranging and recording live instrumentation at Old Paradise Audio in London, while Ella worked on vocal recordings in Sydney.

Old Friends was actually the first track I wrote from the EP, and, the first song I ever really felt proud of”

In name, The Zone Identity sounds like a long forgotten band comprised of college students from the age of psychedelia that released one obscure 45 that lives on with a mortgage-busting price tag. It’s about 50 years too late for a story that cool – The Zone Identity is just the latest musical endeavor from producer, drummer, DJ, writer, multi-instrumentalist, (occasional) MC and music industry outsider, J-Zone.

After the unexpected cult success of The Du-Rites, J-Zone’s 2016 funk offering with guitarist Pablo Martin, the New York native follows with a different take on the funk for the inaugural offering of The Zone Identity. Working with a wide array of different musicians with different backgrounds for The Zone Identity makes for a more funk-jazz-inspired and solo driven take on J-Zone’s trademark drums and production. This debut 7” features jazz guitarist Ed Littman and Hammond B-3 organist Bennett Paster from Fraternity Music Group house band, The U.B.'s, as well as J-Zone’s go-to percussionist, Ray May, on congas. Littman and J-Zone split the bass playing duties. An avid funk 45 collector, J-Zone uses both sides of the release to pay homage to his musical heroes and favorite records with a spin on two of his favorite tunes. While the A-Side re-works “Funk-I-Tus,” an obscure late ‘60s offering from L.A.-based Warm Excursion, the b-side will be more familiar with its nod to “Let The Music Take Your Mind,” an early hit for J-Zone’s favorite band, Kool and the Gang. The original story is more exciting, but the reality is easier to believe. It’s also cheaper.

Straight outta Camden, NJ it’s Chocolate Star. Starting in 1980 Chocolate Star served as the outlet for the music of Gary Davis. Gary started Chocolate Star with his long time Camden compatriot Dennis “DJ” Jones after a few years spent under the wing of Peter Brown at P&P Records. But Gary’s storied involvement in music goes back further than that, having studied composition and arrangement with the late jazz great Manny Albam. Gary’s musical education actually started earlier than that as one of the people he learned the most from was his Uncle, famed jazz organist Richard “Groove” Holmes. When you combined the funk Mr. Davis inherited from “Groove”, with the street-sense of Peter Brown with the skillful composition and arrangements learned from Manny Albam, you’ve got Chocolate Star. Playing with a band composed of (very talented) people from his Camden neighborhood Davis released cut after cut of solid funk filled dance music. They’re all compiled here, from the Joe Sample inspired “Gee Dee”, to one of first commercial releases to lay the beat down with a drum machine in “The Pop”. Of course prominently featured is the legendary mover “Gotta Get Your Love”. “A Taste Of Chocolate: The Very Best of Gary Davis” has been assembled with Mr. Davis and whenever possible using Gary’s original masters. Over the past twenty years, when musicians and producers in Southern California have needed fresh R&B, funk, or hip hop beats, they’ve called on drummer Jake Najor. A former bandmember of Breakestra, Incredible Moses Leroy, and The Styletones, Najor has performed or recorded with scores of noteworthy artists, including TV on the Radio, Raphael Saadiq, Kelis, Joss Stone, Big Daddy Kane, De La Soul, Karl Denson, Rodriguez, and Empire of the Sun.

When not on tour, the San Diego native performs with a wide network of local musicians, including as a member of the house band for The Redwoods record label. It’s with the Redwoods that the veteran drummer has taken the lead on a new project, Jake Najor and the Moment of Truth. While most of Najor’s career has been spent contributing percussion in service to the visions of his collaborators, with his debut record, In the Cut, Najor has been the one enlisting players from his musical cohort as well as some cherry-picked, heavy hitters on the LA funk/soul scene to flesh out ten tracks of original grooves, ranging from soulful cinematic instrumentals to hard hitting funk jams.

The album’s lead single, High Costa Living, lands in the latter camp. It features an accomplished roster of west coast funk players, including a potent brass section led by trumpeter/arranger Todd Simon (Antibalas, Ziggy Marley, Quantic), and including James King (Fitz and Tantrums), Elizabeth Lea (Tedeschi Trucks Band), and Sam Robles (Jungle Fire), behind the gritty vocals of MixMaster Wolf (Breakestra). High Costa Living sets the tone for a record loaded with dynamic performances to match the syncopated rhythms laid down by So Cal’s go-to beatmaker. The second album from SpaceArk. More brilliant self-released, private-press jazz/soul from 1976 Los Angeles. ‘SpaceArk Is’ came out on Color World records in 1976, on a limited run of about 5,000 copies. It followed their self-titled debut (also available now on Mr Bongo) on the same original label, the year before.
For a handful of years in the Seventies, SpaceArk was one of the most promising and electrifying bands in Southern California. Although their music was far greater than the sum of its parts, those parts made for a very original style. R&b, soul, rock, pop, jazz, classical … it all came together in blissful stream of intricate compositions that swept up crowds from US military bases to Northern Soul clubs around the UK.
SpaceArk wrote and performed more than 100 songs during their time together. Most of them were not recorded and are now either lost or forgotten.
