Confusingly described on the centre label of the 1971 original issue as ’Soul’, this is in fact a prime slice of Afro-psych-funk complete with wails and grunts over fierce drums and picked guitar. 'Angelina II’ is a much warmer affair that rides a shuffling mid-tempo pachanga groove. Both tracks were transferred, restored and mastered from the original 1/4 inch tape.

Traffic Sound's 'Meshkalina' is a song with references to Incan culture which was heard all over Peru when released in 1969. It combined psychedelia, a hint of progressive hard rock and a Latin tinge. It became an anthem of its time and was covered by Paco Zambrano y Su Combo shortly after, resulting an explosive Latin dancefloor hit! Currently in high demand in the psych/garage collectors' scene and played out in all major events by top psych DJs, this 7" comprises both versions for the first time.A perfect DJ tool! It's hard to choose between the two recordings of the huge psych-Latin anthem 'Meshkalina' that were released in Peru in 1969. The Traffic Sound original was a big hit all over the country. The fierce guitars of the Peruvian band and Latin percussion sounds would be spiced with references to Incan culture. Renata Lu is a bit of a mystery figure... She only made a few albums in the 1970s and sang backup on many more such Tim Maia and Nonato Buzar but for whatever reasons never seemed to make it into the MPB upper echelons. Debuted solo in 1971 on her self-titled album for Copacabana Records with a heavyweight fusion of US style soul and funk with added Latin percussion. This features Renata Lu singing over a hybrid samba/boogaloo backing track rich in jaunty bass, rasping horns and jazzy electric piano riffs. Rare LP finally reissued on a deluxe edition. One of the landmarks of Funk Carioca.

The Room will be Ricky Reed’s first artist album since becoming a house-hold-name producer, and launching his own label with Nice Life Recording Company. The project features Leon Bridges, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Dirty Projectors, Terrace Martin, Duendita, Ayoni, Lido Pimienta, St. Panther & John-Robert and more. The Room is a title that came to him in the wake of the death of George Floyd and the galvanizing of the Black Lives Matter movement across America and the world. He wanted to create a communal place where it’s as necessary to cry as it is to rejuvenate; where it’s as vital to be angry as it is to find joy. The music is an invitation to share experiences, commiserate, rejuvenate, and offer hope. It is upbeat in places, meditative always, and has real soul to it. Wewantsounds is delighted to announce the reissue of Robert Cotter's ultra rare 1976 album, 'Missing You' in partnership with Robert Cotter himself. Originally released on the Tiger Lily label, the album was never properly released at the time and most of the copies were supposedly destroyed before they could hit record stores. The few copies that survived now command unreasonable prices. The album, recorded in New York between 1975 and 76, is also the only known recording by The Big Apple Band, which Robert Cotter was fronting at the time alongside fellow musicians Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards, Tony Thompson and Robert Sabino. The album's audio has been remastered and the reissue comes with the original artwork plus a 2 page insert featuring liner notes by Love Injection's Barbie Bertisch and Paul Raffaele. Robert Cotter's "Missing You," released in 1976 on Tiger Lily, had all the ingredients of a hit album: a super talented singer and songwriter, a string of superb tracks including a couple of potential hit singles and a team of amazing musicians in the studio. However very few copies of 'Missing You' survive to this day. Not that the album didn't sell well at the time, it just didn't sell at all. No records could be found in stores and for a good reason. The label, Tiger Lily, an offshoot of Morris Levy's Roulette Records, was reputedly a tax-scam whose goal was to basically lose money. The label only operated for a couple of years and vanished without trace after releasing around sixty albums. ?Robert Cotter had been active since the late 60s, first in Long Island where he grew up singing in Church and with his high school band, then in New York where he got hired to play in the roadshow of the 1970 Broadway hit 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. When this came to an end, Robert returned to New York where he got introduced to two young aspiring musicians, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edward. They needed a singer to front their new group, The Big Apple Band, who also included Robert Sabino on keys and Tony Thompson on Drums. Robert joined and the group played for a few years making a name for themselves in the New York area. ?In the process Cotter wrote a few songs that he recorded with two different groups between 1975 and 76: The Big Apple Band on one side and also with musician friends from his previous group on the other side, giving the album its great versatility. ?The album features a wide array of styles, from the funk of the title track and 'Disco Blues' to the soulful acoustic feel of 'Three Wise Men' and the conga-led mid-tempo groove of 'God Bless The Soulfire People'. The tracks showcase Cotter's amazing range as a singer and also as a composer. The two Big Apple Band tracks, 'Love Rite' and 'Saturday' are not only great, but also give an insight into the origin of the Chic sound. These songs are historically invaluable as the group’s only recordings just before it morphed into Chic (A remake of 'Saturday' would actually become a hit for Norma Jean Wright two years later produced by Rodgers/Edwards). The album finishes with the incredible "Come On With It," a politically-charged diatribe against Nixon featuring a darker psychedelic edge. When the album was pressed, Cotter got a few copies and never really heard back from the label. He moved on with his career - performing and recording for various other labels - and never really looked back on his debut album. ?Greater than the sum of its parts, "Missing You" is a unique album and a bonified classic that finally gets the release it deserves forty-five years on. Wewantsounds is delighted to reissue the album in its original glory for everyone to appreciate.

Breezy' by Ruby & the Mudflaps features a collection of studio cuts alongside a number of live recordings from the 1970s. These songs are exclusive to Cordial Recordings and have previously never been available on vinyl apart from 'Is That Enough?' which we released in 2018 on 7" single.

The live recordings capture the magical Haight-Ashbury west coast vibes with a crossover of soul and hippy chic. The original full length studio demo version of 'Breezy' starts the proceedings off on Side A and is followed by the uptempo swing of 'Without You.' The steppers of dream of 'Is That Enough?' slows the pace down before the tempo is raised again with the prophetic 'Only Love Spoken Here.' The album closes off with the first live version of 'Mountain Man.'

The B side kicks off with 'Love Song' that conjures up visions of lying on China Beach in the late 1960s without a care in the world. We are then treated to a fine rendition of Tower of Power's 'Don't Change Horses (In The Middle Of The Stream).' The final studio recording in 'You Want Me' comes next before segueing into the jazzy work out of 'Time.' This album version of 'Country Girl' is a different take of the song that we had previously released as a B Side. We close the album off with the second live recording of 'Mountain Man.'

We believe that these songs deserved a wider audience or they risked the danger of being lost forever in time. We take changes here at Cordial Recordings from time to time and hope that you like this collection of golden nuggets.

Wah Wah 45s make a welcome return to the world of re-issues. Having started out over two decades ago releasing dance floor funk from Benny Poole, Cheyenne Fowler and The Googie Rene Combo, and later re-releasing obscure Kompa-funk from Haitian pianist Henri Pierre Noel, they now turn their attention to an overlooked early 90s acoustic soul gem.
About thirty years ago, music teacher and budding producer Alex Boyesen found himself working as part of the Haringey Music Workshop - a community programme and outreach project funded by the local council in Haringey, North London (coincidentally the area in which the Wah Wah head office is now based!).
"Anyone could come and get lessons for free - ranging from piano, sax, guitar, drums, bass, singing and workshops including choral, jazz band and more." Alex Boyesen
It was during that time that Alex came across a young Sam Edwards.
"One day I went into one of the rehearsal rooms and there, by herself, was this girl playing a piano and singing. It was the most incredible voice I had ever heard."
Before long, the pair were playing all over London as a duo with Alex on guitar and Sam on vocals.
"Sam had never had professional training, she was simply an utter natural."
The Haringey Music workshop was connected with other projects in the borough, in particular a community project called the Selby Centre. Here they ran training programs for young people and one of these was a music business course. The idea was that they found an artist, recorded them and then promoted them. One way or the other they ended up picking Alex and Sam to be on their roster.
"My good friend Nixon Rosembert was brought in to oversee the recordings and they hired the Islington Music Workshop to do the recording. We got musicians from the Haringey Music Workshop to play on the sessions and spent a day recording two songs -American CarsandLife. The training workshop had created a label called Progression Music and out the record went."
Three decades later and out of the blue Alex started to get interest again in the record he'd almost forgotten about all those years ago. It had become something of a sought after gem on Discogs, and there seemed to be an interest in that 'acoustic soul' sound once again.
"I got three people asking if they could re-release it and finally here we are with Wah Wah 45s doing the business after all these years."
It was Hospital Records and Wah Wah 45s founder, Chris Goss, who first brought the idea of releasing this record to the table.
"This is a really special record for me, picked up 30 years ago, from a young James Lavelle at Honest Jon's in Ladbroke Grove. Sam Edwards would go on to perform and write songs with North London's Izit, the acid jazz collective fronted by Tony Colman - with whom I have built a music company, these past 25 years. Alex Boyeson worked with Tony at the Haringey Arts Project, who produced a one-off vinyl release of Alex's two compositions back in 1991. Thanks to Alex and Tony, we have been able to clean-up the original audio, uncover photos and lyric sheets to present, with real love and affection, these two lost gems from a bygone era." The project was then expanded by Dom Servini, who got heavy disco legend Ashley Beedle and co-label owner and erstwhile producer Adam Scrimshire in to take on remix duties.
"When approached by Dom Servini to reworkAmerican CarsI had no idea about the history of the original song. Originally released on Greenback Records, a label from New Jersey consisting of George Greene & Gary D. Jackson, two producers who scouted local talent to record at George's home studio and independently distribute. The duo had a string of releases before Jackson relocated to Goldsboro, NC in the late 70s to establish a string of non-musical related business', when he met recent high school graduate, Karen Scott. Jackson enabled the potential of Scott's talent by searching for a group to write & record with. Satin Finish started out as a trio of Goldsboro musicians, Donald Oliver (keys), Joe Exum (drums) & Dennis Kornegay (bass) who came together for the recording project. Scott didn't write music so the group were tasked with coming up with an albums worth of material to take to the studio. Jackson had hired additional musicians for the session, three horn players & a guitarist, which would take place at Greene's home studio in Durham, NC. Three tracks were laid down for the purpose of a 7" single, the A side being Scott's calling card 'I Don't Want To Lose Your Love', written by Oliver, arranged by Kornegay & sang by Scott. Penned for the flip was 'I Didn't Know Funk Felt So Good', a song dropped due to being beyond 6 minutes in length, which made way for 'Took A Chance On Love', a song written & sang by Kornegay. The single had local success, however shortly after the release of the single Scott went to college to pursue her education whilst the group engaged new members and continued for another couple of years before disbanding. Another slice in time that we're proud to present to you. Shout out Kool Hersh for introducing us to Dennis & making this happen.

Sequence are from san Diego, California a reel to reel tape of ten songs were placed up for auction by Carolina Soul, included on the tape were 5 previously unreleased songs and 5 songs that were included on ‘Mix Faze,’ with 3 of the songs being slightly different versions. We decided that we would enter into the bidding because we liked the songs and thought that they deserved a wider platform. We also believed that we could locate Ron and hopefully do a deal if successful. Amazingly we won the auction and the tape was heading to the UK. A friend called Anders Beraha, who was originally from San Diego before moving to his current home in Copenhagen, had recently spent some time with Ron. An introduction was made to Ron and we chatted about releasing the songs in partnership. Ron was thankfully in agreement to this plan and a contract was signed. Two of the recordings had featured on the High Jazz release so we had to wait until that contract had finished before we could release this album. In agreement with Ron we decided upon ‘Visions Of My Love’ as name of the album, which we felt was the strongest of the unreleased songs. The album was recorded in October 1976 at Studio West in San Diego and is thought to pre-date the later recordings on ‘Mix Faze.’ Cordial Recordings hope that you enjoy this album as much as we do.

In the early seventies, Hank Swarn and Shirley Nanette collaborated to form Never Coming Back. Swarn had been on the road for five years, lending his guitar-backing talent to Earl Grant and his band. While on tour, he wrote some tunes that were ultimately released on the Never Coming Back album. Al Nanette approached Hank about putting together a record with Shirley, who was also keen on getting in the studio. Luckily, Swarn already had songs to bring to the session. With the support some talented local musicians, the album was recorded–mostly in one or two takes–in a little over a week. Unfortunately, the album saw little exposure. Needless to say, this tremendous effort by Nanette, who continues to sing and perform in Portland, has touched the hearts of many who’ve recently heard the album for the first time.

The amazing, unpredictable, one and only Sly Stone has never made a secret of his beginnings as a teenaged hopeful in Vallejo, California in the early 1960s. A trio of singles with his interracial high school vocal group The Viscaynes, followed by two more releases as a solo, recorded in Los Angeles with producer George Motola, comprise the fascinating apprenticeship Sly needed to undergo on the road to fame. For decades, Sly’s earliest works have been spread around on a parade of unauthorized collections, most with low-fidelity sound, artificially extended versions, and tracks by unrelated artists. Yellow Moon: The Complete Recordings 1961-1962 corrects this injustice by offering up Sly and the Viscaynes entire output from the correct master sources. This special 2 LP set complements the recent Ace Records CD of the same title and adds a brace of additional, exceedingly rare Sly-related material. Along with the original singles by The Viscaynes, and Sly’s first solo releases as Danny (Sly) Stewart and Sylvester Stewart, there are also several unissued demo tracks produced by teen idol and Viscaynes mentor Gary Stites, plus the sought-after Jasper Woods 45, featuring an incognito Richard Berry with the Viscaynes on vocal support. Exclusive to this vinyl edition are a rare High School recording by an early incarnation of the Viscaynes, both sides of the 1961 Royal Aces single on which Sly plays guitar, and as a special bonus, the Stewart Four gospel release from 1956, featuring a teenaged Sly on lead vocals – his very first appearance on disc. The deluxe package comes with an authoritative and heavily illustrated booklet with much heretofore unpublished information and fresh interview material from the group and associates, as well as commentary from Sly himself. Since first emerging in the latter half of the noughties, Guillaume Metenier’s Soul Sugar project has evolved considerably. Initially a trio built around the virtuoso organist’s love of ‘60s and ‘70s soul-jazz and Hammond funk – Metenier studied under jazz organ legend Dr Lonnie Smith – Soul Sugar is now a collaborative collective that draws just as much influence from classic Jamaican dub and reggae as the works of Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff. The outfit’s musical evolution comes into sharp focus on Excursions in Soul, Reggae, Funk & Dub, a collection of hard-to-find tracks that have been released at different points, and on different vinyl formats, over the last three years. Taken as a whole, the set offers a stunning snapshot of Soul Sugar’s rapidly expanding catalogue of classics. Metenier is once again at the controls but this time round Soul Sugar’s cast list of contributing musicians includes Sly & Robbie, Blundetto, Lone Ark, Slikk Tim, Thomas Naim and honeyvoiced soul singer Leo Carmichael. Metenier also stars as a musician, providing lively and ear-catching organ solos under his now familiar Booker Gee alias. What’s most noticeable from the off is the richness of the reggae riddims, the warmness of the instrumentation and the effortlessly soulful nature of the music. This is particularly evident on the collective’s stunning covers of Luther Vandross’s "Never Too Much" and Marvin Gaye’s "I Want You": effortlessly sunny and life-affirming interpretations that re-imagine the tracks as sumptuous slabs of reggae-soul and provide a platform for Leo Carmichael’s inspiring and comforting voice. Metenier and friends’ take on dub reggae – toasty, authentically bass-heavy and seeped in analogue effects – can also be admired on "Matumbee" and "Cool Down", the latter a digi-dub influenced affair rich in colourful synths sounds, echoing delay trails and sub bass so deep it will rattle your teeth. Both also contain lusciously jazzy guitar licks and some incredible keyswork from Metenier.The guiding hand of Spanish multi-instrumentalist and producer Lone Ark can be heard on album opener "Aximites" – think Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry producing Jimmy Smith – and "Faith", an expertly breezy concoction that sports Jackie Mittoo-esque Hammond B3 solos from Metenier over a luscious backing track that sounds like something that may have emerged from Studio One in the mid 1970s. The collective’s love of Studio One is explored further on a sweaty, reggae-funk cover of "Greedy" that features fabulous drums, bass and guitar from Slikk Tim, while "Out In The Rain" is an authentically sparse, spaced-out dub number laden with fluid instrument solos and devilishly heavy riddim. Part compilation, part artist album, part collaborative celebration of dub-soul fusion, Excursions in Soul, Reggae, Funk & Dub is the strongest statement yet of who Soul Sugar are, and where they’re going.
