Side A is a masterclass in breakbeat editing of a b-boy classic sample source. Yes, there are many killer JB edits out in the universe, but when you see that the legendary Black Cash & Theo AKA Thelonious Beats take a turn, you know you gotta cop this mutha on site. Here the edit master bravely returns to one of the main sources of the dawn of hip-hop — JB’s comp “In The Jungle Groove” which was released in 1986 to capitalize on it’s popularity in the genre at the time. The comp is named for a breakdown section that appears in “Give It Up Or Turnit a Loose” which is the workout we have here. JB quiets the band down to handclaps, footstomps & congas played by Johnny Griggs. After he raps a little, JB cues legendary drummer Clyde Stubblefield back in, followed by bassist Bootsy Collins & the rest of the band. JB wasn’t intentionally trying to create a perfect batch of hip-hop samples in the late 60s & early 70s, but he couldn’t have succeeded any better if he had been. This edit may enter well-worn territory but he uniquely delivers an edit that showcases why it inspired so many & still delivers the goods to help you get your party started off right & quickly.

Next up on the flipside we are treated to an edit of “Web” by Hampton Hughes, from his 1974 David Axelrod produced & arranged album “Northern Windows”. Heads will recall it as the core sample for “Off the Record” by Hieroglyphics, from the 1998 LP “3rd Eye Vision”. As mood changers go, this track is up there with the best. Last year whilst DJing with miche at Shapes festival in the snow-capped mountains of Switzerland, a breathtaking yet ominous Alpine sky suddenly became a picture postcard moment. The clouds parted and a double rainbow formed, as miche dropped Studio Rio's bossa nova remake of Bill Withers’ all-time classic 'Lovely Day'. From there, the dancefloor shifted gears and morphed into full-swing feel-good vibes, in a beautiful, spontaneous moment nobody could have planned for.

Mr Bongo now proudly presents a reissue of this brilliant, bossa-channelling Bill Withers reinterpretation from Studio Rio’s 2014 release ‘The Brazil Connection’. Masterminded by the German Grammy award-winning Berman Brothers, the project was born out of their deep love of Brazilian music. “Our goal was to bring the Brazilian joie de vivre to iconic performances by well-known artists. What would these classic songs sound like had they been recorded in the studios of Rio de Janeiro in the first place, with the best Brazilian musicians and arrangers?” the brothers reflect.

Capturing the life force of Brazil, the beating heart that is its music, they set out to find the musicians who would fit best with their concept. Landing in Rio in 2013 a series of coincidences led to them being introduced to their idols Marcos Valle and Roberto Menescal, who both agreed to come on board. The Berman Brothers also wanted to find some of the musicians who recorded with one of Brazil’s most influential composers Tom Jobim. “Fifty years after Jobim made the music that really defines bossa nova, we found that many of his sidemen were still active, including Paulo Braga of Jobim’s famed rhythm section. It was magic; everything just fell into place.”

There's no question that the original of ‘Lovely Day’ is up there as one of the most feel-good, spirit-lifting anthems of all time. Here the brothers, with the help of a whole host of Brazil’s finest musicians, rework Bill’s soul-fuelled groove into a bossa nova slice of sunshine. With the blessing of Bill and Sony, they were given access to the original multitracks so they could incorporate Bill’s vocals perfectly into the new arrangement.

Joy-injected horns and bouncing double bass blend with the smile-inducing samba flavour of Pretinho da Serrinha’s cavaquinho playing. Tying it all together Torcuato Marinao who worked with the likes of Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, completes the line-up as arranger of the songs.

The perfect end-of-the-night track, mood lifter or soul warmer, remakes don’t get much better than this.

Sixteen years may have gone by since Isaac Hayes’ untimely passing at the age of just 65, but he remains one of the most popular and Iconic singer-songwriter-arrangers in the history of Soul music.

The albums Hayes’ made for Stax’ Enterprise label remain the benchmark in ‘symphonic soul’, and sound as breathtakingly brilliant as they did when they were new releases.

As well as being one of a small group of artists who expanded the growth of the soul albums market, Ike was a consistently successful singles artist, who placed 16 consecutive 45s on the R&B chart between 1969 and 1976 – most of which also crossed over to pop.

The biggest hits have been anthologised on previous occasions – but “Hot Buttered Singles” is the first series to present the A and B sides of all of Hayes’ ‘Yellow Stax’-era 45s in chronological order, and in their original singles versions – several of which have not appeared on CD before. Many of these tracks are among his best loved recordings. Here you will hear them as you would have heard them on soul and pop radio over half a century ago.

With the ’60s coming to an end, the revolutionary spirit of the times was so ubiquitous that it simply demanded more from its artists. We started to see this shift in rock ’n’ roll (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones) and in jazz (Lee Morgan, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock); it was time that pop and soul music followed suit. Marvin Gaye would release the seminal What’s Going On in May 1971, and while What’s Going On was pivotal in allowing Black artists to deliver popular music with a message that spoke to the times, There’s a Riot Goin’ On followed Gaye’s lead, but pushed the boundaries further. Sly Stone challenged what was possible for a Black artist in popular music, both lyrically and sonically.

Sly & The Family Stone’s There’s a Riot Goin’ On was synonymous with the anxiety felt by all alive at that time — how to navigate this new decade, after all the turmoil experienced in the last one. It’s a bit of a “purple haze,” really. Artistically, Sly managed to harness the confusion that not only he felt, but that most people were feeling then.

“This Is The Breaks” is a 12-track look at the history of the break − and they’re all great jazz, funk and soul records. We have not only included tracks that were sampled back in the first golden age of sampling, but also tracks that have been utilised by some of today’s biggest names.

The curtains open with Millie Jackson’s version of ‘If Loving You Is Wrong I Don’t Want To Be Right’ originally a hit for Luther Ingram in 1972. This version recorded in Muscle Shoals and produced by Brad Shapiro was the opening track of Jackson’s “Caught Up” LP released in 1974. The use of a beat with sweeping strings as a sample, usually at a slow to medium tempo, as pioneered by the Wu-Tang Clan, seems to be especially in vogue at the moment. ‘If Loving You Is Wrong I Don’t Want To Be Right’ has been used over 50 times over the last few decades and was sampled in 2023 by NLE Choppa on ‘Pistol Paccin’’. A similar sound is culled from Debbie Taylor’s 1969 track ‘Let’s Prove Them Wrong’ which was sampled in 2021 by JID on his cut ‘2007’. It was also used in 2023 on ‘Release Me’ by Nasty C.

f this suggests that sampling can be fashion-led, another example is Little Ann’s ‘Deep Shadows’. Ann was a Detroit singer who released only one single − 1968’s Going Down A One-Way Street (The Wrong Way) produced by Dave Hamilton for Ric-Tic Records − but left a handful of soul masterpieces in the vault. While two of those − ‘What Should I Do?’ and ‘Who You Trying To Fool?’ − are up-tempo northern soul dancers, the downtempo ‘Deep Shadows’ is atmospheric, with a plodding beat, memorable vibes and piano parts. Finally released in 1998, it has since been sampled dozens of times by artists like Grand Puba on ‘Think Of U’ (2016), Loyle Carner on ‘You Don’t Know’ (2019), and more recently in 2024 by Your Old Droog’s on ‘dbz’, featuring Madlib, Denzel Curry and Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man.

One of hip-hop’s greatest producers is DJ Premier of Gang Starr, whose beat picking is exemplary and the way he uses those beats raises him above almost all his peers. Take his deployment of Joe Simon’s ‘Drowning In The Sea Of Love’, which he edited and manipulated to form the hook of Gang Starr’s 1997 single ‘You Know My Steez’. He was also the first producer to sample Billy Garner’s Detroit street funk cut ‘I Got Some’ which went on to be sampled time and time again. From the same Motor City studio − Dave Hamilton’s − came Chico & Buddy’s ‘Can You Dig It?’ which was one of several samples on House of Pain’s 1992 hit ‘Jump Around’.

Classic golden age samples are present in Lowell Fulsom’s ‘Tramp’, which has been sampled over 50 times including by the Wu-Tang Clan and Epmd, and the Fatback Band’s ‘Gotta Learn How To Dance’ which was used by Kool G Rap and DJ Polo on the tough rap of ‘Streets Of New York’ in 1990. For dance music fans it was also the sound of Groove Armada’s ‘My Friend’ in 2001. Another UK dance hit sample is Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie’s ‘Heavy Soul Slinger’ which was used by the Prodigy on their 1995 hit ‘Poison’ and by Massive Attack on their 1998 track ‘Mezzanine’. Lonnie Liston Smith’s beautiful ‘Summer Nights’ has been sampled mainly in dance music by artists such as Moody Man and the Swedish House Mafia. New Orleans singer Tami Lynn’s version of the Doors ‘Light My Fire’ was sampled by musician, producer and DJ Howie B on ‘Sore Brown Eyes’ (1997) and also by the Dilated Peoples on ‘Triple Optics’ (1998). Gil Scott-Heron’s harrowing tale of drug addiction, ‘Home Is Where The Hatred Is’, from his 1971 LP “Pieces Of A Man” was sampled on the Kanye West and Common collaboration ‘My Way Home’ from West’s “Late Registration” album released in 2005.

Whilst the music on “This Is The Breaks” has been sampled to construct brilliant new songs the originals have stood the test of time. In fact, someone, somewhere in the world is probably slipping some of this music into a new song right now.

So, drop the needle and challenge your friends to play a guessing game of who used what sample and when.

"‘I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You’ runs the stylistic gambit without feeling Franklin is doing things just for show. The album isn’t trying to function as a resumé of her skills. Genre shifts feel organic and natural. “Don’t Let Me Lose This Dream” is built on a bossa nova groove, while “Do Right Woman Do Right Man” has a little country ballad flavor. “Dr Feelgood (Love Is A Serious Business)”—one of four songs penned by Franklin herself—is a bluesy belter. She might have been Queen of the genre, but pigeonholing Franklin in soul is like calling Sugar Ray Leonard just a welterweight. She could shuffle through styles as smooth as velvet. Everything is stamped with her own distinct character."

Tough Guys is a daring, widescreen, progressive funk album from one of the genre’s finest craftsmen. Because Hayes was Black, and rooted in R&B radio, he didn’t get lumped in with the prog-rock groups then making waves on the rock charts, but he should have been. He was making music as expansive and expressive as Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and Yes; he was just doing it in a different context. The soundtrack for Hayes’ first major film role, Tough Guys would echo throughout history as much for the way it matched the grimy, over-the-top story of the film it accompanies, but also in the way its songs were chopped up and re-imagined, appearing in everything from Geto Boys songs to Quentin Tarantino movies.

In 1974 one of James Brown’s most important band-leaders and sidemen – trombonist Fred Wesley would release not one but two albums as a leader including Damn Right, I Am Somebody. Starting with an evocative cover it was clear to fans that this album wasn’t all about a party. Deep messages abound in the songs here, such as the nearly 10-minute
workout “I’m Paying Taxes, But What Am I Buying.”

Social messages aside, Fred and his assembled JBs were a party-moving funk machine at heart, as heard on “If You Don’t Get It The First Time, Back Up And Try It Again Paarty” and the laid-back groove of “Same Beat” (with prototypical sampling of Jesse Jackson exhorting an audience to chant “I am / Somebody”). Nestled among these raise-your-fist classics is one of the most experimental funk cut ever made: “Blow Your Head,” known to relatively modern listeners as the backbone of Public Enemy’s “Public Enemy #1” (from 1987).

Get On Down pays reverent tribute to this classic by pressing it on 150-gram vinyl, housed in a 1970s style
Stoughton jacket in an 8-gauge custom polybag emblazoned with an embossed People Records logo. In addition,
the package comes with a 22” x 22” poster featuring the original cover art, as well as a 7-inch flexidisc of the rare “Unrubbed Version” (without Moog) of Fred Wesley & The JBs’ 1973 single “Blow Your Head.” This version was

The latest release in the much loved Mr Bongo Record Club Series, Available on CD, 2LP Standard Vinyl & Special Edition 2LP Pink Translucent Vinyl. Curating the tracks for a Mr Bongo Record Club compilation is always such a pleasure. At a time when the expression "Music is My Sanctuary" has an even greater cathartic impact for many people, we set out to make this volume an extra special one - like an old favourite mixtape or playlist. For Volume 4 in this series we continue in the same mould as with previous editions, selecting current favorites and rare lost gems from the Brazilian, African, soul, funk, and disco genres. We present tracks from artists such as Azwon, Cindy & The Playmates, and Zé Roberto to name just a few. However, one main departure and progression to this edition is the first time inclusion of recordings by contemporary artists. These come from Matthew Tavares (of Badbadnotgood fame), Wax Machine, and DJ Format & The Simonsound, which were originally featured on either limited private press vinyl releases or were previously only available digitally. We felt their inclusion was important and wanted to share these wonderful discoveries with a wider audience. They also complement, enrich, and fit perfectly with the flow and journey of the compilation. Durand Jones & the Indications aren't looking backwards. Helmed by foil vocalists in Durand Jones and drummer Aaron Frazer, the Indications conjure the dynamism of Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield, AND the Impressions. Even with an aesthetic steeped in the golden, strings-infused dreaminess of early `70s soul, the Indications' sophomore LP, American Love Call, is planted firmly in the present, with the urgency of this moment in time. The Indications' 2016 self-titled debut was the product of friends who met as students at Indiana University in Bloomington, In., recorded for $452.11, including a case of beer. American Love Call, the band's sophomore LP is instead the record the Indications dreamed of making, fleshed out with strings, backing vocals, and a newfound confidence in songwriting. Blending a slew of influences from years spent crate-digging, guitarist Blake Rhein says the Indications approach songs in the same way hip-hop producers do, as likely to pull inspiration from `70s folk-rock or classic R&B as they are Nas' Illmatic. Ace Records has been the go-to source of 1960s US girl group compilations since the release of our “Where The Girls Are”, “Girls About Town” and “Stop, Look & Listen” vinyl albums back in the 1980s. The 10-volume “Where The Girls Are” CD series followed over the next few decades, along with a batch of standalone CD collections. These days, however, the vinyl long-player is back in favour as the format of choice for discerning collectors.

“A Good Thing Goin’!”, the latest in our current series of gorgeously packaged 12-inchers, drops this month. The album opens in fine style with ‘What About You’ by the great sounding Mousie & the Traps. Darlene Love kicks off the second side with ‘Let Him Walk Away’, a song written by Jackie DeShannon with noted arranger Jack Nitzsche, no less. Darlene Love, one of the most beloved vocalists of the classic girl group era, also sings lead on the Blossoms’ terrific previously unissued ‘You Had A Good Thing Goin’’, while Jack Nitzsche produced the Satisfactions’ lush ‘Baby I’m So Glad It’s Raining’ and Karen Verros’ castanets-driven version of the Crystals’ ‘Little Boy’.

Other highlights include Brenda Holloway’s silky pre-Motown gem ‘Constant Love’, the Puffs’ hip dancer ‘I Only Cry Once A Day Now’, the Fran-cettes’ latin-flavoured ‘Late In The Evening’ and Linda & the Vistas’ Shrine Records rarity ‘Bad Apple’. Acid Jazz group label Countdown Records presents a new 7” single series: ‘Mod Classics’. The first release is from cult group the Fleur De Lys, pairing their 1965 recording of Pete Townshend’s ‘Circles’, with the first-time single release of their cover of The Temptations’ ‘You’ve Got To Earn It’.

‘Circles’ was originally slated as The Who’s follow up to ‘My Generation’, before getting caught up in legal matters. The Fleur De Lys version was released to take advantage of The Who’s misfortunes, but it was rush-released and failed to chart. It remains one of the finest slices of the Pop Art Mod sound, and is as fresh today as it was then.

‘You’ve Got To Earn It’ is from a tantalising, lost session from 1966 (which also included takes of The Impressions ‘Amen’ and Don Covay’s ‘Sookie Sookie’). All that survived from the session was an acetate of this amazing cut, found by group member Gordon Haskell, from which this side derives. It was originally released as the title track of the first Fleur De Lys compilation on Acid Jazz in 2013. It has never before been available on 7” vinyl.

Robert Glasper’s holiday album In December was released last year as an Apple Music exclusive. We’re now able offer it widely available to physical retail and all DSPs!

Is there anything to be done with carols like “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and “Joy to the World” that hasn’t been done in the past 300 years? If there is, Grammy-winning pianist, composer, and producer Robert Glasper is the kind of artist to do it. “I like covering songs that people know well,” Glasper tells Apple Music. “That’s what I’ve done throughout my whole career.” It’s true: As a jazz pianist, he’s obviously learned his way around making classics his own, whether they were written by Mongo Santamaría or Kurt Cobain. But, he says, “The biggest challenge in making a holiday album was trying to do it in a way that feels festive but at the same time feels real and not corny.”

He succeeds on both fronts on In December, his holiday album that mixes classic carols with a set of originals, and which was recorded in Spatial Audio. Part of what keeps it credible is the fact that Glasper’s hiphop/R&B/jazz fusion is done on a compositional level instead of just a cosmetic one (no collages of sampled sax solos and drum loops here). The covers reveal a lot about his musical worldview: Sung by Tony winner Cynthia Erivo (The Color Purple), “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” is turned into dark, airy neo-soul, while “Joy to the World”—sung by Alex Isley—feels like a Stevie Wonder ballad. But the originals reveal even more. “The intention for this album was less about Christmas songs and more about songs that feel good during the holidays,” Glasper says. “I stayed away from thinking too much about Christmas and its traditional lingo, and concentrated on real things people go through during the holiday season.”

Little Barrie And Malcolm Catto Team Up For Seven Tracks Of Breaks And Sci-Fi Fuzz For Maverick Producer Madlib's Label

Quatermass Seven, the meeting of minds between guitarist Barrie Cadogan, bassist Lewis Wharton and drummer Malcolm Catto represents a re-birth of sorts for Little Barrie, with these their first recordings since 2017’s Death Express and the untimely passing of their gifted drummer and friend Virgil Howe. As Lewis explains, the sessions played a part in the healing process, a way to re-connect through music without any intentions to necessarily come away with a finished record. “It was good to get in the studio again after such a long break especially as we didn’t go in with any agenda or expectations,” he explains. There was no preconceptions that we would make a new Little Barrie record, it was just an opportunity to work on some things Barrie had written for fun with zero pressure.” With most tracks recorded live with minimal overdubs, and produced by Malcolm at his Quatermass studios, The Heliocentrics’ main man brings new flavour to the band’s rhythm section by blending his power behind the drum kit and his expansive skills behind the mixing desk to take Little Barrie’s music forward into new territories. Recorded on Catto’s treasure trove of analogue gear, and mastered onto ¼” tape, the overall effect is guitar, bass and drums finding a sweet spot where genres collide, delivering a record that takes the influences of the past and pushes them towards somewhere more contemporary. “I definitely hear in Barrie’s songs a lot of common musical ground’” explains Malcolm. “It felt like a great thing to do, work with Malcolm while we’re figuring out what we wanna do,” Barrie concludes, “let’s just go in and do some playing and see what happens, and we came out with more than we ever intended.” Quatermass Seven delivers a dark, deep and expansive set of grooves, layered with frazzled and flawless guitar and flowing melodies, as well as pointing toward a future of exciting new musical opportunities. “Still here, so fine, just a little darker state of mind” sings Cadogan on ‘Steel Drum’, words which sum up hope in times of uncertainty, whilst unintentionally offering a perfect description of Quartermass Seven.

Strut presents the definitive reissues of two all-time classic Caribbean soul and funk albums, The Beginning Of The End’s ‘Funky Nassau’ (1971) and ‘Beginning Of The End’ (1976).
Emerging from Nassau in the Bahamas in 1971, the band was formed around the Munnings brothers (Ray, Leroy and Frank) and the first song they recorded, ‘Funky Nassau’, became a No. 1 Billboard R’n’B hit, selling over a million copies. “We wanted to create something new,” remembers Ray Munnings, “something that was truly Bahamian. We loved funk but wanted to include elements of junkanoo, the indigenous music of The Bahamas.” An album was written within a week and recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami. “We brought in more Bahamian themes, like ‘Monkey Tamarind’, a wild fruit that grows there.”
By the time of their second album in 1976, the band was managed by Don Taylor, also Bob Marley’s manager. “Don took us to Byron Lee’s studio in Jamaica and used Teddy Randazzo (Little Anthony & The Imperials) to direct the sessions,” recalls Munnings. “He gave us more of an uptempo jazz funk sound with Chicago-style horns.” The album led to a run of incredible bad luck. Booked to support Marvin Gaye’s ’What’s Goin’ On’ tour, the US Musicians Union stepped in and ordered a US group to fill the slot. They were then added onto a major Bob Marley tour in 1976 before he injured his foot, cancelling all dates.
These definitive official reissues of ‘Funky Nassau’ and ‘Beginning Of The End’ are remastered by The Carvery from original tapes and feature full length tracks from the studio sessions. Both albums feature a history of the albums and the band by vocalist Ray Munnings, alongside rare photos. ‘Beginning Of The End’ appears on loud-press 2LP for the first time.

Soul connoisseurs are adventurous folk and the emergence of a previously unknown singer/songwriter is big news among the cognoscenti. The only trace of Atlanta’s Kenneth Wright is a handful of unrecorded song titles on BMI represented by Aware’s publishing company Act One. 'You got the stuff' is not 'Lovely day' - that much is true. This one's a wigged out, extended, trip into deep space from 1978 that is truly baffling.
Of course, it features Bill singing for the first half of the track but then all of a sudden we're launched into a cosmic wormhole as everything just falls back and the track is stripped of any earthly qualities. People find themselves asking 'this...... this is Bill Withers?' as lazer guided synths and rock solid drums pull us into the sonic vortex. Truly amazing. Obviously a nugget like this has not gone unnoticed and has been edited and chopped and sampled deftly by the more sarcastic, left-field oriented crate diggers out there but it has never been reissued legitimately - Until now!

A hugely sought after and collectible gem right here, backed with the wistful slow jam 'Look To Each Other For Love' as per the original 1978 Columbia promo 12" version. Walter “junie” Morrison was a former member of the Ohio Players and responsible for writing and arranging their early 1970s hit singles “Pain”, “Pleasure”, “Ecstasy” and most notably, the group’s first Billboard R&B Number One “Funky Worm”. In 1978 he joined George Clinton’s Funk Mob Parliament Funkadelic and, as their musical director, played a key role during the creation of the hit albums “One Nation Under A Groove”, “Motor Booty Affair”, “Gloryhallastoopid” and their R&B Number Ones, “One Nation Under A Groove” and "(Not Just) Knee Deep". In between acts he released three solo albums for Westbound Records that showcased his unique take on the funk. “The Funky Worm – Live at Dooley’s 1976” is a one of kind live recording from his mid-70s Westbound solo period that was only recently discovered.
