Quirky as fuck!' is the term to describe the latest killer 45 from Paul Elliott & Shawn Lee. Since they crossed paths over a decade ago, Paul (Eleven76/Hot Border Special/The Mighty Mocambos) & Shawn (Ping Pong Orchestra/Young Gun Silver Fox) have collaborated on many impressive projects including the critically acclaimed documentary The Library Music Film. The pair share a love of weird, exotic, otherworldly sounds that can usually only be found in classic library music. However, with their latest release on Farfalla Records, they take the listener on a deep dive into the strange, percussive and unusual world they inhabit! 'Bass Sick Bitch' begins with a glitchy toy rhythm and leads into a voice memo of a wooden 'Jank tone' instrument that Shawn had played and recorded for Paul to hear. Stefano Tirone is an eclectic artist, open to a wide range of different music genres. The psychedelic scene that never was – the perfect subtitle to this compilation. There were barely any drugs in Hungary to begin with. In this era, alcohol, music, and imagination have served as the primary means of mind alteration among the youth. The Communist party had a firm grip on culture through monopole control over venues, the media, and the recording industry, western records were not available, clubs enforced a strict dress code of suits, shirts, and longer skirts, and the police harassed young men for not more than having long hair or wearing blue jeans.
There was, however, an undercurrent of smaller semi-professional bands striving to succeed in the shadow of the very few stars privileged by the sole state owned record company. Given their chances to release music were at best limited to a few 7“ singles at the mercy of said record company powers. Psyched Out Grooves from Hungary compiles ten of the most outstanding singles recorded by the underdogs of this period. Some of the bands featured on here have eventually reached wider success by switching to more commercial styles, like Bergendy, Neoton, and Apostol. Most, like Echo, Meteor, Kék Csillag, Non-Stop, were temporal formations that dissolved after a few years due to personal conflicts, lack of success, or both. Others, like Scampolo or Juventus, lasted a longer time without an actual break through. Most of these bands never had a consistent, lasting ’psychedelic’ repertoire or identity at any point. These tracks were the exception, not the norm. That coherence - the illusion of a scene - comes from the curation and sequencing of Budabeats head honchos Von Yodi and Gandharva. It is the arrangement of these puzzle pieces that makes them fit together.

Though Spencer Wiggins did not make the R&B charts until his Fame 45 ‘Double Lovin’’ in 1970, it is his eight Goldwax singles, released in the latter half of the 60s, for which he is rightly famous among soul fans. They epitomise Memphis soul, veering from deep melancholic ballads to raucous uptempo groovers.

Wiggins’ fans dig every aspect of his music; his voice is ideal for the southern soul sound. That genre is close to the blues and ‘Lover’s Crime’, his first 45 on the Bandstand subsidiary, was an early Isaac Hayes composition of that ilk. ‘Sweet Sixteen’, which was unreleased until 1977, is a full-on blues, but presumably not issued by Goldwax as they wanted to keep Spencer known as a soul singer, even though he excels on the number. Goldwax’s strong country influence is apparent on ‘I Never Loved A Woman (The Way I Love You)’ which certainly rivals Aretha’s breakthrough single from a couple of years previously. ‘Once In A While (Is Better Than Never At All)’, written by ex-country singer and Goldwax boss Quinton Claunch and George Jackson’s ‘Old Friend’ are also in the country bag.

The dramatic ballad ‘Uptight Good Woman’ was penned by Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham and Jimmy Johnson and is probably Wiggins’ best-known recording; it is a highlight of his live performances. Penn and Oldham also provided ‘Take Me Just As I Am’, another stand-out track. ‘He’s Too Old’ and ‘I’m A Poor Man’s Son’ are vibrant, warm-hearted numbers taken at a jaunty pace, still very much southern soul; ‘Lonely Man’ is the only song which hints at Detroit’s influence and has consequently cost Wiggins’ 45 collectors appreciably more than the norm.

Wiggins’ career suffered by being in the shadows of James Carr at Goldwax and that may have been the reason why Claunch, a very fair-minded man, let this superb singer move to nearby Fame, along with some Goldwax tracks they had already cut on him in those studios. He also had artistic success at Sounds of Memphis in 1973; unissued tracks from there as well as Goldwax have strengthened his reputation. He is primarily a preacher now but his 2010 appearance at the Cleethorpes rare soul weekender demonstrated he is still a great performer and he recently completed a successful two-date visit to London and Manchester with his brother, manager and fellow singer Percy.

Prolific Japanese producer T5UMUT5UMU has built up a reputation in the last few years for his ability not just to recreate club styles but to flip them into almost unrecognizable dancefloor hybrids. "Asyl" follows a blistering run of Bandcamp releases where T5UMUT5UMU has melted together gqom and techno, deconstructed grime and welded dubstep to traditional music from Japan and India. Here, he's operating completely off the grid, pulling raw materials from across the globe and hammering them into confounding shapes and patterns.On its surface, 'Fireball' sounds like a liquid metal approximation of South African gqom, but move in closer and you can make out dubstep bass squelches, trap hats, and industrial techno jet propulsion filling in the gaps with rubberized mortar. 'Desert' is the EP's most lightheaded cut, a psychedelic percussive spiral that curves micro-tuned mbira clangs around bee sting bass, aerated noise blasts and sub-aqueous kicks. It's a hard track to place, but fits in somewhere between Donato Dozzy, Menzi and 33EMYBW, all shifting rhythms and precision-edited sound design.'Sea of Trees' retains this momentum, pushing the tempo and interspersing woodblock vibrations with syncopated bass drums and goosebump-inducing synths, while closer 'Bottomless Valley' shifts back into a gqom framework, shuffling the expected pulse with a powerful dembow swing, half step subs and Indian-inspired rattles. "Asyl" is a varied but shockingly coherent statement from an enigmatic producer who refuses to confine himself to a single path, and at a time when "cross-genre" is the norm rather than the exception, it's refreshing to witness a producer who's unafraid to truly make stylistic left-turns, rather than simply mash together top-level aesthetics.

By 1974, salsa was taking Colombia by storm and so the directors of the INS label decided to create a band that would appeal to salsa fanatics and be able to compete with labels such as Discos Fuentes and Codiscos. Thus was born Los Afroins, an obscure, short-lived combo that would release two LPs and six 45s.Their first album, "A gozar salsomanos", is a sought-after collector's item and contains ten brassy, heavy-duty salsa gems: covers of salsa hits by Ismael Rivera, Los Ahijados, Roberto De La Barrera, Cheo Marquetti and even the smash pop hit by the French modern classical and electronic music composer Saint-Preux (a great instrumental descarga version of `Concierto para una sola voz'). In addition, there are two originals that are equally hot. INS artistic director Alfredo Linares, the famed Peruvian keyboardist and composer, oversaw the project and guested on piano for several tracks, doing some arranging as well.Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180g vinyl, part of a new Vampisoul reissue series of classic LPs from Colombia's INS label.By 1974, salsa was taking Colombia by storm and so the directors of the INS label (Industria Nacional Del Sonido Ltda), based in Medellín, Colombia, decided to create a band that would appeal to "salsómanos" (salsa fanatics) and be able to compete with the area's two larger labels, Discos Fuentes and Codiscos. Thus was born the oddly named Los Afroins (a contraction of Afro, indicating the roots of the music, and "-ins", for the label name), an obscure, short-lived combo that would release two albums and six 45s. The repertoire focused on cover versions of hit Afro-Antillean tunes both classic and contemporary. Pianist Agustín Martínez "El Conde", who would later work with Joe Arroyo and Juan Piña, led the group and did some arranging. Longtime label friend and supplier of numerous edits, "Voodoocuts", teams up with "Matasuna Records" again for a new officially licensed 45. This time he puts his hands on two disco gems by the South African band "The Movers", one of the most important South African bands that shaped the country's music scene from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. The songs "Soweto Disco" and "Shanana" from the late seventies get the Voodoocuts treatment with his typical precision and attention to musical detail. The fusion of South African music with international influences such as jazz, funk and disco is an explosive mix and a secret weapon for every record bag.
Voodoocuts kicks off the single with his stunning edit of "Soweto Disco". The original is already extremely infectious and energetic, with a grooving bass, opulent horn sections, wild organ parts and a relaxed reggae vibe. But Voodoocut manages to give the song an extra kick with his skillful rearrangement, drumming and the addition of loops, filters, effects and samples. The edit effortlessly takes the song into the present to deliver a killer cut for the dancefloor.
On the flip side, "Shanana" is another delicacy from the band's later creative period. Although the mood is more relaxed, it's a wonderful song with its distinctive bass and guitar lines, as well as the great organs that are always present. Voodoocuts Edit builds up the song slowly to give the instruments enough space to unfold. A wonderful jazz-funk tune with a disco touch, enhanced by the Voodoocuts treatment.

The story begins in the turbulent townships of South Africa in the 1960s, when unknown musicians and brothers "Norman" and "Opa Hlongwane" approached "Kenneth Siphayi", a wealthy businessman, with the idea of supplying them with musical instruments in exchange for a share of live performances and record sales. Siphayi agreed and even became their manager, providing them with a rehearsal space and an organist. This was the beginning of the band "The Movers", whose name was also given by Siphayi.
The Movers developed a unique sound that combined traditional South African rhythms and melodies with influences from American soul, jazz and funk. Their sound was both danceable and emotionally profound. Inspired by the challenges and hopes of everyday life in the townships, their music took listeners' hearts by storm. Their energetic performances and catchy melodies quickly made them one of the most popular bands in the country. This was reflected in the sales of their first album, "Crying Guitar", which sold over half a million copies in the first few months after its release.
But their music was more than entertainment; it was an expression of the hope and resistance of an entire generation. Despite their immense popularity, The Movers, like many other black artists in apartheid South Africa, faced many challenges: Segregation, censorship, and limited opportunities to bring their music to a wider audience. However, they overcame these challenges. Their song "Soweto Inn" even became the soundtrack for the student revolts of the mid-1970s.
However, the band also experienced repeated upheavals due to a change of band members and the dismissal of their manager in 1976. The gap was filled by the producer, who took a more active role in the band's musical direction. By the end of the 1970s, none of the original members were still active and the musical landscape in South Africa began to change. The emergence of new musical styles and political pressure from the apartheid government presented challenges to the band. Despite these adversities, The Movers remained active, recording new music and proving their adaptability and creativity.
Even after their active time, the legacy of The Movers has remained alive. Their music is still listened to and appreciated today, and they are considered trailblazers for many musicians in South Africa. More than just a band, The Movers were a voice of hope and cultural expression in a difficult time. Their music remains an enduring symbol of the strength and spirit of South Africa.

I was born and raised in Montreal and spent a lot of time on the Kahnawake Mohawk Indian reservation. Idle No More is probably the most refined piece of music we have made to date. The songs are about the state of the world we live in today. Originally, I was going to call the album Of Madness I Dream, but then I became very enthused about the amazing work of the Idle No More movement. Everyone I asked had never heard of it, so I contacted the leaders of the movement and, with their permission, decided to rename the album Idle No More in hopes that it would increase the world’s awareness of this miracle that is taking place for the indigenous peoples of the world. If you are not familiar with Idle No More, look it up and GET Involved! It took a long time to make, but we are very proud and pleased to bring you this album. Soul / Electro / jazz / trip hop. It was in 2019 that Matteo (one of the 3 members of the band Chinese Man and co-founder of the label CMR) met the first musicians who would be part of the project "Matteo & Bro". Starting with guitarist Karim Addadi and bassist Christophe Lincontang (with whom he collaborates on a film score), Matteo then surrounded himself with drummer Hugo Pollon and saxophonist, flutist and Duduk (Armenian flute) player Lamine Diagne. A real desire to launch a project where the musicians are at the heart of the creative process progressively grew as the meetings went on. The artists gather in Bron (near Lyon) for the composition of the eponymous opening track. On this album we also find the voices of two female artists, Isadora (Belgium) on "Sweet Shadows" and Tania Saleh (Lebanon) on "Sakakeen", as well as General Elektriks with its keyboards and its sublime groove on several tracks ("Bina" & "Prumirim"). Between programming & electronic production, arrangements and composition, the demos take shape, the groove and the universe between soul, funk, trip hop and world music extend the desire and the production of an album. Due to the health crisis, the album is finally recorded in late 2021 with the help of Sodi, sound engineer and producer of many albums (Fela & Femi Kuti, Saul Williams, Deluxe, IAM ...). For the orchestration of the tracks "Path" and "Sakakeen", Matteo also called on Franck Lebon (film music composer) to add a cinematic dimension to these two tracks.

Introduce bass by Harvey Newmark to the laid-back groove intro, then Boooom!! Let’s shift it up a gear, Rhodes clav vibe and super funky drums set the pace, with funky horns to complement that groove, Smokin’ jazz funk!! Once the Flute comes in this track has taken me to the clouds and back. Part two kicks back right into the groove, a perfect club cut, with Frank on the Rhodes, Harvey on the Bass groove, this is one heavy groove.

Singer, songwriter, and producer Johnny Burgos converges with veteran soul producer, Jeremy Page, (Kendra Morris, Czarface, MF Doom) to offer their first joint album together titled, 'All I Ever Wonder.' The album is a vividly vulnerable and honest effort by Burgos, lyrically and vocally, supported effortlessly by Page's masterful production. The pairing of the two seems meant to be, with a sound steeped in retro soul techniques, the album is equal parts novelty and nostalgia, equalling a timelessness that speaks to the humanity in all of us. All I Ever Wonder will be released on Vinyl, CD and all digital platforms on Friday, June 28th, 2024 via UK-based Soul label LRK Records.

Johnny - "Jeremy and I have been ships passing in the night for years now. However, our first official collaboration was a 2021 remix of my song The Grey, which featured his long-time co-collaborator Kendra Morris. From the get-go, the musical chemistry was strong, so we took a shot at writing some original tunes. Since then, we've locked in on a creative groove and churned out a bunch of material. As we learned how to complement each other's musical strengths, the project took on more form and purpose, exploring heavier subject matter and expanding its range of genres. I'm pretty sure that's what makes this project so fun for us, and possibly what the early gatekeepers and listeners resonated with most. Neither of us expected such a reception to the music, which only made us more excited to hone in with more intention towards a goal. This also allowed me to bring more raw ideas to the table and have the confidence in Jeremy to hear the potential, then work his magic to extrapolate on my foundation. The teamwork in this effort was inspiring as we listened and referred to each other in every step of the process, and had a crew of killer musicians on deck for when we needed the extra feels on some joints.

We worked really hard on this record and hope it reconnects our listeners to being human in a visceral way. It's accessible, honest, and soulful because I wanted it to speak to anyone who still wants music to relate to. Music to help you through the valleys, to celebrate the peaks, and handle everything in between. It's a journey of the soul that explores ego, insecurity, love, loss, survival, enlightenment and trusting the process. It's truly 'All I Ever Wonder.' "

"All I Ever Wonder" will have its digital release through LRK Records on all platforms on Friday, June 28th, 2024.

Johnny Burgos is a Brooklyn - born singer, songwriter, producer & engineer. His brand of future-soul embodies a raw uncompromising sound revealing beauty from pain, hope from despair, and the will to keep fighting. Especially influenced by his uncle and world-class percussionist, Andre Martinez, Johnny grew a fascination with the percussive rhythms of salsa and soul music, eventually manifesting into a devoted passion for Hip Hop production using an Akai MPC. With influences from Michael Jackson, OutKast, J Dilla, Lauryn Hill and D'Angelo, Johnny's music draws upon the core principles of R&B, while encompassing elements of Hip Hop, Funk, Pop, Salsa and Reggae.

Johnny has collaborated with DJ Skizz, for Mobb Deep & M.O.P., Marco Polo, Frans Mernick, Liza Colby (The Gold Setting) and led his band Bridge City Hustle, with whom he toured nationally.

As a solo artist Johnny debuted with back-to-back brand endorsements from French's Mustard and Samsung US, using them as a platform to launch his 2018 EP 'Love Through it All.' His debut album 'Gone Into The Grey' was released to critical acclaim in March of 2021 and has since been added to multiple editorial playlists by Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal, creating exponential growth. In 2022, Burgos' song 'Wild About You' was heard as the soundtrack to Neiman Marcus' "It's Your Moment" global streaming campaign. Johnny's currently amid promoting his latest album, The Tangent Tape, performing with his band The Butter, recording new collaborations and preparing his upcoming LP with Jeremy Page & LRK Records.
