Ty Karim is one of the finest Los Angeles singers to have never scored a hit in her own country. Her records are rightly lauded in Europe though and we present two of the best on her producer and partner’s Romark label in our Repro series. ‘Lighten Up Baby’ is a rare classic stomper from the heyday of Northern Soul. It was actually a one-off Car-A-Mel release in 1966 but it was recorded as part of Kent Harris’ Romark set-up.

‘All At Once’, on the other hand, is a moody mid-tempo number that has found favour with soul fans in recent years.

We really are excited by our new release. Taken again from the vaults of Mr Stu Gardner we have the next instalment of the Twinn Konnexion story. We released the single SDE17 way back in 2016, a double sided 45 of "dont fight the love", a blistering slab of modern boogie soul that sold out very quickly upon release. The single was first championed by Dj Jeremy Underground at many of his dj nights. Move on a few years and we have discovered the original studio reels from that session. And it doesn't disappoint!
Pulled from those reels are another 3 amazing compositions where no doubt Mr Gardener called on his long list of musical associates.
The information of the players and singers has never been divulged with us, not sure why the secrecy & frankly we don't care. What we do know is each song oozes class from start to finish and there is something for everyones taste.
A "Sunshine of you day" has an almost gospel feel to its rhythm, with the singer telling how his women lights up his day. And to be honest its lite up our HQ since we had it. Just ripe for the dancefloor!

So says legendary West Coast player Snoop Dogg on the opening track of “Tuxedo II”. The blessing of the Doggfather is of special importance to Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One, whose second album as a duo finds them at the forefront of a new wave of gangster boogie - one that owes as much to G-funk as P-funk.This is the territory of pre- and post-hydraulic low riders: a mélange of Cali boom-bap, analog synth bass and elegant disco that resonates truth and authenticity in an era where so many are faking the funk.

Bonding over a shared love of Chic, Parliament, and the other signs in the greater funk Zodiac, Mayer Hawthorne (Aquarius) and Jake One (Taurus) were early predictors of the sea changes that American music would undergo in 2016. Their first release of 2015 debuted at #1 on iTunes America’s RnB charts, christened as “Dance Floor Catnip” by the Boston Globe, and “Pure disco-funk hot fire” by Okayplayer. Considering their individual successes (Mayer’s four solo albums, Jake’s production work for the likes of Drake, Future, The Weeknd, and De La Soul) and five Grammy nominations between the two of them, it’s no surprise that their powers combined have yet again yielded a bevy of absolute slappers that are packaged perfectly for dance parties in 2017. Music producer/DJ Svani Quintanilla (aka Principe Q) is noted as the creator of "Screwmbia", pioneered by his duo Royal Highness (with DJ King Louie). "Screwmbia" is his modern take on cumbia, blending trap drums with slowed down cumbia rhythms. Bringing cumbia in to the modern times is an homage to his aunt, Selena Quintanilla-Perez, who also did so in the 80's and 90's. He is the oldest son of Kumbia All Star founder A.B. A branch pruned from West Indian-born Trevor Dandy’s 1970 LP Don’t Cry Little Tree, “Is There Any Love” is the stand out track from our 10th release, Good God: A Gospel Funk Hymnal. Produced by composer Paul Zaza in his basement studio in Toronto’s Etobicoke municipality, the socially turned-on Don’t Cry was intended to be sold to Dandy’s congregation. When Dandy failed to hit his promised sales goal of 2000, most of the pressing was relocated to the dump. “Is There Any Love” has since gone on to be sampled by a plethora of artists, including Kid Cudi, Ghostface Killah, Monsters of Folk, and Common. In 2009 we pressed up 200 copies of a one sided version of Dandy’s signature tune in conjunction with United Record Pressing and gave most of them away. It has since become one of the most in demand 45s Numero has ever issued. This unlimited repressing ups the ante slightly, as we’ve added an identical second “bonus” side for discerning DJs and home hifi enthusiasts alike to add their own cue burns, scuffs, and scratches to.

South London Soul Band Trambeat, influenced by the floor shaking sound of 1960's Motor City. With brand new single, "Don't Hold Back"
Trambeat were formed in 2012 by guitarist Graham Potter and drummer Des" Jammy" James. Graham and Des had played together in several bands previously and already had a good musical understanding. Trambeat's manifesto; to write original songs influenced by a love of Northern Soul, Motown, Rocksteady and RnB. But also to look forward and include elements of more contemporary genres. Bass player Nipper Smith, Saxophonists Robin Ogleby and Nadia Barbosa, and organist Emer O'Hanlon were recruited to form the core band and Trambeat set about recording and gigging with various vocalists until, in 2016, Aimee Grinter became Trambeat's permanent lead singer.
Written by Graham Potter and Des James, "Don't Hold Back" is in some ways a comeback single for Trambeat. The pandemic years took their toll on many bands and Trambeat in particular, with the loss of founding member Robin Ogleby being a very hard blow. Following a tribute single in 2021 to raise money for Robin's charities, and a couple of festival gigs in the summer of 2022, theyndidn't have much appetite for writing new material, and were unsure whether to continue as a band without Robin. It was during a jam between Graham and Des in late 2022 that the bones of "Don't Hold Back" came together. The drums and rhythm guitar clicked into an infectious dance groove with echoes of vintage Motown. The band members came together in the studio with renewed enthusiasm and laid down the track in just a day. The band, who remained close,even during this hiatus, realised how great it was to be back in the studio together again. Graham's lyrics, as well as the euphoric feel of the track, reflected this new optimism within the band. "Don't Hold Back" is a celebration of life, of deep friendships and most of all, of love!

‘Wear Your Natural, Baby’ was a good seller when issued on Kent Harris’ Romark label in the late 60s – judging by the, at least, three pressings of it. Understandably so, as it is a captivating rhythm for a then very current political and fashionable message. Towana was in fact Ty Karim, singing under her young daughter’s name. On this flip, Ty recorded as herself on a cover of the CB Overton’s hit ‘If I Can’t Stop You’. However, Kent Harris decided to not go with this recording at the time and re-cut it with new lyrics as ‘Keep On Doin’ Whatcha’ Doin’’ as a duet with George Griffin issued in 1980 on Sheridan House. That record has become a modern soul classic over time and this alternate solo version, with the different lyrics, by Ty is sure to excite lovers of that genre.

For a long time, the music of Congo-born Bony Bikaye had to be sought in the purgatory of "world music", where diamonds in the rough cohabited with bland nightmares of white dudes who froze rumba like fish sticks. Worse, they did put it on the menu, when so many longed to move on. Take Bikaye, who grew up listening to modern european music, digs Krautrock, struggles with tradition, obviously looking for trouble in the genre. In Brussels, he recorded a few albums with CY1 (Loizillon/Micheli), and brilliant defectors from Aksak Maboul, produced by Hector Zazou.Now it's up to french trio TONN3RR3 to take up the torch and build this project that proudly brags: "It's a bomb".Thought up at home by Guillaume Gilles (compo/keyboards), the album was finished at One Two Pass It studio, with Olivier Viadero and Gae"lle Salomon on percussion, Yoann Dubaud (machines & bass) and Guillaume Loizillon (synth of CY1 fame, and matchmaker of this affair). It's a deeply musical record, crafted by no-attitude reference players with nothing left to prove, and you can hear it. Floats well above the fray."Keba na butu", beware. Indeed : beyond the simple pleasures of soukouss, or the rumba guitar riff that spins like a merry-go-round that skipped technical inspection, lie lush orchestrations. Freestyle, synthetic : something old, something new, something what-the- fuck-is-that-now. There's straight, there's syncopated, there's 808 and knee-jerk inducing bass patterns_with a vision. BIKAY3 plays his voice more than ever. His crazy vibrato has improved like hard liquor over the years. In "Zela" and "Balobi" in particular, he puts it to good use with flamboyant, Screamin' Jay Hawkins-style antics. He can also resort to pure storytelling : "La fore^t et les dieux", is a French-spoken excursion into the wild, moving along in grasslands of synths and percussion with TONN3RR3. A tale of gods and spirits, plain and simple. Nicole Mitchell brings the occasional flute in "Akei" for this trip in the bush of ghosts where lingal...

Gospel meets Modern Soul & Boogie on this second never before released LP containing unreleased songs & demos from the vaults of Atlanta, Georgia based group Tomorrows Wish led by vocalist Lester Carr (who now travels with the Tams) & backed by Mary Spencer & Kimberlyn Williams They recorded several R&B singles in the 1970s that never saw the light of day. “The Soul Of Tommy Youngblood” 1970 Kent LP had many fine tracks, especially ‘Tobacco Road North’ though it was not attributed to the rightful writer, Jimmy Radcliffe, at the time. The music has been sampled for various hip-hop adaptations, including one by Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan, but the original stands on its own and deserves a 7” format.

The Other Brothers ‘Nobody But Me’ is another UK Kent exclusive that sold out on its first Kent Select press and is still highly sought-after and now very expensive.

Tommy was born in 1945 in Homestead, Florida, and after his first foray into music in a church choir, he launched his secular recording career in Jackson, Mississippi, working mostly with Tim Whitsett and his Imperial Showband in the latter half of the 1960s. After a short stint with the Nightingales, he signed with KoKo in 1971 and had six impressive singles released, followed by records on Sundance, Juana and Urgent Records.

“I Can’t Do Enough for You Baby” is a mellow and melodic slow-to-mid-tempo song that sounds almost inspirational, while “Hold On” is a beautiful waltz-time ballad which James Carr released on Atlantic in 1971. Both of these songs were cut as demos probably in 1969 after Tommy and Carson Whitsett had signed a deal to become staff writers with Malaco Records.

Tommy was a magnificent singer and songwriter, who never got the credit he deserved mainly because of poor business choices and unfortunate incidents throughout his career. However, he was a beautiful person, gentle and humble.

The final twist was the discovery that its flip, the moody and bluesy ‘Sweep It Out In The Shed’ was a new floor-filler to spin to the R&B-loving dancers. Recorded in one day on the floor of The Record Co. in Boston MA, this LP opens up the door to what jazz is really all about. “Jazz doesn’t have to be so academic. It can be a party. It doesn’t have to be about playing a million complicated notes that only schooled musicians would enjoy. I went in focusing on groove, sound, and simplicity,” says bandleader/ drummer Tim Carman (ga-20). That’s exactly what the listener gets from this trio: straightforward grooves with a sound that blows the roof off the joint. Drawing inspiration from notables such as Big John Patton, Brother Jack McDuff, Babyface Willette, and Freddie Roach, they open the door to a very special party that we’re all invited to. In fact, it’s a ten-track jazz party that’s swinging, upbeat, and funky as hell. Consisting of eight original songs and two covers, the entire record itself gives off a live feel. Tim Carman Trio could be playing at Club Mozambique, The Lighthouse, The Cliche Lounge, The Front Room, or any jazz club on the circuit during the late sixties or early seventies, but they’re playing in your living room right here in the present day, and you’ve got a front row seat. On this record, as with their freshman Keylime LP, the trio did not rehearse before the sessions. They would figure out a tune and cut it in one or two takes. It’s about the process, old and new. TC3 does a top-notch job of preserving a style while adding their own feel from start to finish. With Tim Carman on drums, Ken Clark on organ, and Steve Fell on guitar, these three accomplished musicians have done more than release a jazz record, finding and perfecting a formula that most can not even buy. They’ve put together an homage to the true essence of great jazz music, one that the aforementioned greats would be proud of. King Comfy pays respect to the past and is a real jazz party, just like it should be.

Northern Soul Girl Levanna and her Streets of Soul have reactivated this mid-Seventies modern soul gem recorded by Thomas East for Lee Anthony’s True Soul label out of Little Rock, Arkansas. East began his recording career in Chicago with his Fabulous Playboys scoring two 45s for Ernie Leaner’s Toddlin’ Town imprint. They were managed by Lee Anthony, hence the hop to Little Rock to develop their altogether more sophisticated funk-soul-jazz fusion.

Paul Johnson, aka the One-Man Band, was also rooted in Chicago recording a lone 45 for Checker before moving down the road to the Leaner brothers’ Kellmac imprint. ‘That I Love You’ is an emotive slice of Chicago mid-tempo, kitchen-sink, soul drenched in bluesy brilliance.

To say that The Sinseers play oldies would be a misnomer. Fronted by bandleader and son of East Los Angeles Joey Quiniones, the group has quietly chipped away at the sounds of R&B and soul for the last half-decade. Quinones and his crew have continuously created a distinctive vibe that explores all aspects of a timeless genre, bringing together their interpretation of music through an unmistakable modern lens.With their most recent effort, the aptly titled Sinseerly Yours (Colemine 2023), the band recorded most of the album live in the studio. With Quinones on vocals and keys, vocalist Adriana Flores, Christopher Manjarrez on bass, Francisco Floreson on guitar, Bryan Ponce on guitar and vocals, Luis Carpio on drums and vocals, saxophonists Eric Johnson and Steve Surman, and Jose Luis Jimenez on trombone, The Sinseers achieves their most fully realized sound to date.All of the album's stunning tracks were recorded in a converted studio space in Rialto, California, known as Second Hand Sounds. Natassya Sianturi's honeyed vocals float over a beautifully arranged track driven by guitar riffs, organ, and reverb drenched stick hits. After a two year hiatus, The Zone Identity is back! But exactly who The Zone Identity is and how they get down depends on the tune. For 2017’s “Funk-I-Tus” b/w “Let The Music Take Your Mind” and 2018’s “Melting Pot” b/w “Soul Food” 7”s, The Zone Identity sat firmly in a soul-jazz groove for smokin’ covers of classics by Kool and the Gang, Booker T and the MG’s and lesser-known funk bands like Warm Excursion. But who is The Zone Identity in 2021?

The only common denominator is drummer Jay Mumford (aka "J-Zone"), who uses The Zone Identity as a vehicle to work with his favorite musicians outside his band, The Du-Rites. For this go round, he teams up with Pittsburgh’s Buscrates, to put a greasy, funk-i-fied spin on the classic 1980s “Knight Rider” theme song. A two-man job, Buscrates’ infinite knowledge of synths and keyboard prowess match the authenticity of the original, while adding an extra heavy unique funk sheen for the update. Meanwhile, J-Zone’s syncopated kick-snare work, hi-hat polyrhythms and auxiliary percussion add a funky, human touch and thick layer of grease not heard on the original. “Knight Rider” pays a respectful nod to the original without neglecting the b-boys/b-girls and funk fanatics who need to get down and dirty.

The flip side, “9 Breaks (The Warm Up),” is credited to J-Zone as a solo artist because technically…it’s a drum solo! 2020’s pandemic lockdown forced musicians to be more creative and practice harder, often out of sheer boredom. It was in said isolation that Zone created his “9 Breaks” routine as a warm-up. The routine sees him seamlessly move through nine classic drum breaks we all know and love; it was both a homage and a warm-up to keep sharp on the set with no shows or rehearsals to keep the rust off.
