As members of one of New Orleans' most esteemed soul/funk groups of the 60's and 70's (The Delltones) Roland Treaudo & Manuel Herrera Jr. made a name for themselves recording iconic albums and sharing the stage with the likes of Lou Rawls, The Commodores, Dorothy Moore, Etta James, Bobby Womack and Jackie Wilson. As a duo, Roland & Manwell went on to produce some of the best electronic funk tracks of the time and this record is our effort to shine a light on these underappreciated masters. His rendition of Berlin Lama's "Interstellar" is leaving the summer and us with a blissful feeling as we are carelessly slurping our mojito, arguing that David Pajo couldn't possibly have joined Sly Stone on a late machine ride out in the studio.

Berlin Lama on the other side took "Parasol 2pm" down memory lane called George Duke Avenue, stopped on the corner to Roy Ayers Street to jazz over a rolled arpeggio, arguing whether to report Donald's bird or not. We are really just thundercatting this one.

For years, Lee Fields has been asking for and patiently waiting on a
reggae rhythm to sing over. To bring this dream to fruition, EMA teamed
up with frequent collaborator and reggae enthusiast, Nick Movshon,
and busted out this version of the Lee Fields & The Expressions' instant
classic, Never be Another You.
The A side is the vocal version of the tune; EMA cut a killer interpolation
of the original and had Lee lay down the vocals like only he can. The
result is right on time for summer, a feel good side that can hold court
right next to the classics.
The B side finds Michels manning the boards for a proper version of the
tune. Echoes, drop outs, and reverb flourishes all dancing through the
mix in proper reggae style.

‘Simple Things’ is an awesome midtempo soul/rare groove jam, originally released on a 45 in 1972, by Pride. Lush instrumentation and soaring vocals from start to finish, reminiscent of Denise Williams ‘Free’ in places.

The missing link between her Barry and Columbia singles, “I Can’t Stand It” b/w “Only Yesterday” is Thelma Jones with her back against the wall of an empty and indifferent Holiday Inn lounge and nothing to lose. Washed out of the recording business by the age of 30, Jones and her then-husband/manager James Hazley relocated to Tampa to work the hotel circuit and figure out what—if anything—was next. Following a chance encounter with Blair Mooney, Jones was invited to workshop a few stray originals at his Studio 70 compound in 1972. “He seemed to believe in me more than I did at the time,”Jones remembered of the Tampa studio impresario. Jones signed with Columbia a few years later and hightailed it out of The Big Guava, leaving two sides of country-politan soul on the shelf to be forgotten about. This Eccentric Soul 45 is a first time issue, carrying the banner of Mooney’s Gimp label and mastered directly from the original analog tapes.

Following the success of the extensive reissue project that we did with Sunny’s & The Sunliners,
(2017’s Mr Brown Eyed Soul compilation, Smile Now, Cry Later & Missing Link full length reissues,
and 2018’s reissue of Little Brown Eyed Soul LP) we bring you another must have 7 inch offering
from his catalogue.
Side A is Sunny’s cover of Get Down, one of the rarest and hardest tunes from his extensive
discography. Only appearing on a Key Loc 45 and very rarely showing up in decent condition, if at
all, it lives mostly on funk collector’s want lists. Although they have covered James Brown, Hugh
Masekela, and The Meters this is commonly agreed to be the funkiest thing they’ve ever cut.
Side B is their version of the Billy Stewart classic Cross My Heart, a tune even some of the most
diehard Sunny fans seem to have not known existed prior to the Mr Brown Eyed Soul compilation.
A sweet soul classic recently made popular again via Jay Electronica’s Just Blaze produced
underground hit Exhibit C, which sampled the Stewart version. Collector’s and music lovers alike
will be happy to see this song available on 7” format for the first time ever.

Thee Lakesiders are a duo out of Los Angeles comprised of Marie and Necalli who we were introduced to by our friend El Oms. He thought it would be great to get them out here to NY and into the the studio with El Michels. Turns out, he was very right. They spent two days in The Diamond Mine with The Shacks as their backing band and Leon producing and writing with them and cut three songs. Two of which are here on this nice two sider of a 45.

Side A “Si Me Falteras” is worked up into something of a Latin Psych number, it’s a cover of Los Terricolas’s tune they cut in 1973 redone with some more muscle. Ben’s driving beat and Max’s guitar work set the stage for Marie to showcase the powerful side of her voice.

Side B “Parachute” finds them in one of their favorite styles, a dreamy ballad that floats over guitar chanks, brush hits, and vibraphone rolls. This time Marie shows us a different side of her range, her beautiful and lush vocals ride perfectly in the pocket making for a gorgeous b side that can ride right alongside the oldies.

Following the acclaimed first album of Al Sunny released in 2017, Favorite Recordings proudly presents this single remix package of “Open Up Your Eyes”.
Al Sunny is a young composer emerging from the French soul music scene. Soon after learning the guitar, he started composing and became involved in numerous projects and collaborations. He quickly discovered deep inside himself the music that he truly loves, inspired by artists such as Tim Maia, America, Al Green, and Al Jarreau. During his studies he met musicians including Florian Pellissier, and it's then thanks to Florian that he met Pascal Rioux, founder and A&R of Favorite Recordings. Together they produced Time To Decide, a first album acclaimed by many tastemakers and gaining a solid success in Japan.
One of the highlights of the LP was the track “Open Up Your Eyes”, which disclosed the premise of Al Sunny music style, infused with Blue-Eyed-Soul, Pop and Folk. Also tainted with a funky dancefloor color, “Open Up Your Eyes” was a perfect match to build a nice remixes package for DJs. On the A side, Bruno “Patchworks” Hovart delivers again a hot Soulful/Disco version of the song with his famous touch. As for the B side, Favorite Recordings asked the Canadian producer Jex Opolis (Good Timin’ Records), with a Disco style slightly more oriented in Electronic and House vibes.

Big Crown is proud to present this reissue 7 inch from Texas’s own Kool & Together.
The A side, “Sittin’ On a Red Hot Stove” is an infectious, medium-paced funk movement that chugs along with the help of some sharp drums from Joe and a rolling bass line that never quits. Originally edited by Texas record mogul Huey Meaux, the 45 version clocks in at just under two and a half minutes, and gave the band its strongest single. It’s an anecdotal tale of a woman who is lusted after but so mean-spirited, she could melt the romance away.

Side B is an unreleased demo version from Kool & Together working up the monster “Funky Nassau”. Clearly something they never finished, the raw recording and lo fidelity of it is what give what they call “Nassau Beat” it’s charm.

The A side is Paul Ramos version of the Mandrill classic “Fence Walk”. Originally released on the Harlem label, and later licensed to Falcon only to oddly appear on their Kris Bravo LP. Ramos stays close to the original, but adds enough to the tune to make it a must have for funk collectors.

The B side “Funky Resurgence” comes by way of vibes player/bandleader Ulysses Crockett who was a stalwart on the Bay Area scene of the 1960's first with his Latin Jazz group Afro Blue Persuasion and later Ulysses Crockett Magic. He also played in The Skins w/ the legendary Bill Graham. "Funky Resurgence" was one of several compositions he wrote for the 1971 play "Resurgence." During this period, Ulysses was also going through law school and he remains a legal voice, writer and activist in the Bay Area.

Highlights of the year have been opening tours for Chicano Batman, and Khruangbin, as well as ""This Strange Effect"" becoming world famous via the Apple iPhone 8 ad campaign. The A side, “Follow Me”, was one of the first songs recorded for Haze almost two years ago. With “black mirror” esque lyrics over a hypnotic mid tempo groove, Follow Me leaves you feeling joyful, calmed, and queasy, all at the same time. Conforming to the usual high standards we've come to expect, Rocafort Records have got their hands on another sublime soul 7inch. Originally released in 1970 on the amusingly named Kack label, soulman Bobby Jones assures us that there's nothing but the smell of sweet soul music happening here.
Written and produced by well-known Chicago music veteran, Maurice Lee Simpkins, "Welcome Back A Foolish Man" does everything an early 70s mid-tempo two-stepper should. Urgent, pleading lyrics telling of unspeakable heartache, sweeping strings, twangy guitars, heavenly backing vocals that lift everything towards the Gods. All solidly crowned by the raw, expressive vocal talent of Bobby Jones – a consistantly worthy bluesy/soul singer who never really got the recognition he deserved.
Interesting to note that both "Welcome Back A Foolish Man" and the similarly veined B side, "Lovin' Hard, Livin' Good" were sung by soul siren Ruby Andrews a few years prior but with different lyrics, different composers and label. A mystery worth solving for any of you musos out there !

Back around the early 1970's Bell Telephunk was formed around the New Jersey area. Some members moved to Clevleand Ohio where the group performed in these early days at bars and clubs. The band disbanded early on and the name lie dormant for a few years. Around 1975/76 Michael Calhoun and a few others decided to rejuvenate the name again. The musical style that became known as Zamrock came to embody the economic despair that followed the 1973-1974 oil crisis, which flung Zambia into recession and exacerbated a wide range of social tensions. Much of Zamrock also captured the controversy of wider politics in Africa and the world. Perhaps the finest example of this is Black Power by The Peace. - The Guardian The Boyfriends, from Kitwe’s Chamboli Mine Township, supplied the founding members for Zamrock’s most famous band, Witch, and kick started one of Zamrock’s best bands, Peace. Their sole Zamrock entry, “Black Power”, recorded at Malachite Film Studio circa 1973/4 and issued circa 1975, sounds like nothing else in the Zamrock canon: a lost message drifiting from the flower power era, imbued with a fiery Zambian voice.

Big Crown Records presents the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band’s smashing cover version of “P.I.M.P.”. Following up on the smashing success of their debut album “55” and a string of essential 45s, this is the third label to press this staple tune. Three labels, three times, three different B sides. Back in 2008 Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band released its smashing cover of 50 Cent's P.I.M.P. which was long thought to be the original sample for the tune. The Mocambo pressing already hard to come by and fetching top dollar on the internet has become an underground classic. Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band treat the tune to their signature smashing drums and bass heavy production, taking the original loop and turning it into a full composition. Brass and steel pan parts putting it somewhere between reggae, steel funk, and the “Superfly” Soundtrack. Side B is the proper reggae offering from Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, a cover of the legendary John Holt’s classic “Police In Helicopter”. Another must have two sider, another Big Crown sure shot.

Billy Hawks’ second album "Heavy Soul" is an organ-heavy mod R&B masterpiece. It included club classic ‘O'Baby (I Believe I'm Losing You)’, as well as three other floor-fillers; ‘You've Been A Bad Girl’, ‘Whip It On Me’' and ‘What More Can I Do?’.

The beautifully packaged EP is designed in the London Records / Decca style and showcases the two known photographs of Billy. These were provided by the organ-playing singer's brother Leroy in 2014. Until this point almost nothing was known about Billy.

A native of Richmond, Virginia, he based himself in Philadelphia and his trio worked up and down the Eastern seaboard. He was discovered playing in one of the endless clubs and lounges that existed at the time and made his first album for Prestige, “The New Genius Of The Blues”, in 1966; “Heavy Soul” followed a year later.

Produced by Cal Lampley at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, both ‘You've Been A Bad Girl’ and ‘What More Can I Do’ are appearing on 7- inch for the first time.

Today, SOL Discos is delighted to introduce its very first release, with this official 7" reissue of Hiram & Direct. Initially recorded and released in Detroit (Michigan), it has been a hard to find record since then, with only a little number of known copies floating around and changing hands within the Soul collectors / DJ scene.

Musically speaking, the reissue has been switching tracks sides from the original release, putting the focus on “Love Flight” as the A side. Indeed, “Love Flight” has some strong dancefloor potential for any DJ into underground Disco & Modern Soul. Just listen to those synths! 1961, Port Richmond, Staten Island, NYC: Five kids stumble into a community center, sent by their parents to keep them off the streets and out of trouble. A lifelong friendship is formed over their shared love of doo-wop. The kids start learning harmony and the next thing they know they're cutting records. The group begins to gain steam as they take their act to the packed clubs around New York City. But history has other plans for the boys. First, The Beatles invade America, making doo-wop yesterday's news. Then, the United States invades Vietnam and two of the five boys are sent off to the jungle.Reintroducing: The Splendids. 61 years after their initial formation, the group has reconvened to cut two truly breathtaking records. With three of the five surviving original members weaving together heartfelt harmonies, the group has regenerated themselves and enlisted the help of multi-platinum soul singer Eamon to sing lead. Eamon is no stranger to doo-wop, as he got his start in the music business touring the Northeast as a young boy with a group his father Walter formed in the 90's. With this father and son reunion on these two tracks, the listener is taken back to a time when walking down the street you might come across a gang of youth singing their hearts out on a street corner, serenading the city with their souls. The Splendids hired Los Angeles based producer and multi-instrumentalist Dan Ubick to produce the records and conjure up the retro rhythm and blues sounds of the 1960's. Frequent Eamon collaborator the Oklahoman Benj Heard was then brought on to mix and produce the vocals. Both Ubick and Heard's sonic fingerprints add texture and groove to the groups legacy on 'Cry Baby Cry' and 'Blame My Heart'.Generations have come together from coast-to-coast to take back what history took from them. In addition to the now classic digital release 'Sacred Love' will see the light of day in 7" vinyl format (45 rpm) in two versions. An Afro-American track with a Tony Allen-esque super afrobeat rhythm opens side A (Logo Side) in a hypnotic jazz version performed by singer Giulia La Rosa, who also wrote the lyrics, vaguely reminiscent of Nina Simone's "See-Line Woman".
The B side (This Side) is a 'Clapping Version' without drums which will certainly give free rein to DJs of the genre who want to mix different grooves.

"Sacred Love" is also Galathea's new album due in January 2024. Massimo Napoli's new project once again sees the collaboration of his friend producer and bass player Salvo Dub, as well as a combo of respectable musicians: singer Kadi Koulibaly - originally from Burkina Faso - already featured on the first album, pianist Mario Pappalardo, percussionist Sergio Spitaleri, drummer Luciano Cantone.
