The new single on Bob Stanley's Measured Mile label is a terrific double-header from Connie Stevens – ‘Tick Tock’ b/w ‘Keep Growing Strong’. A northern soul monster, arranged by the late Philly soul legend Thom Bell, original copies of Tick Tock regularly fetch £250 or more.

It was originally the flip side, as Connie Stevens was handed the very first opportunity to record Thom Bell and Linda Creed's evergreen ‘Betcha By Golly Wow’, later a hit for both the Stylistics and Prince. The record label decided to retitle it ‘Keep Growing Strong’, for unknown reasons - Measured Mile have rescued it from obscurity and made it affordable once again.

A classy orchestrated floor-filler and a timeless Philly ballad. You can't go wrong.

The Royal Jesters were a household name in the 60s in San Antonio, TX. the 1960s. Formed by Henry Hernandez and Oscar Lawson, the group performed at school dances and downtown clubs and eventually leased and managed their own venue, the legendary Patio Andaluz. The group also started their own label, Jester Records, and recorded various singles, including a take on Vanilla Fudge's "Take Me For A Little While" with the towering Louie Escalante on lead. The group also recorded "We Go Together," a group harmony classic with 16 yr old Luvine Elias, Jr on a Lowrey organ. A must-have hot tortilla to keep in your bag.

After branching off from The Royal Jesters in the mid-'60s, Dimas Garza attempted a solo career and reinvented himself as Dimas III. Dimas recorded three singles on the Jesters' own Clown label - all tracked at Abie Epstein's studio off General McMullen in San Antonio, TX. The first was "So Funny" b/w "I Won't Love You Again," which are almost impossible-to-find records. Garza never did manage to break beyond the Bexar County limits but left a rich legacy of recordings behind for lowrider enthusiasts and obsessed collectors alike.

The Hytones were Nashville’s top soul group and under the tutelage of genius producer and songwriter Bob Holmes, made some great music. ‘You Don’t Even Know My Name’ was their first release on the short-lived Southern Artists label before it was released on Bell. It is an exceptionally smooth style of singing by the group - in unison for much of the track. ‘Good News’ by contrast is a gritty Stax-sounding mover that was first a 100 Club Anniversary single before being issued as a Kent 45. Now regarded as a rare soul classic, its release on a Southern Artists repro label will be welcomed.

Our next installment on Bob Stanley’s Measured Mile label is a KPM Library double header. Basil Kirchin and Jack Nathan’s ‘Viva La Tamla Motown’ is pulled from the rare “The Wild One” LP they recorded for De Wolfe in 1966 and, instrumentally, celebrates Berry Gordy’s classic Detroit label.

The flip is taken from the equally collectable 1972 De Wolfe library LP called “Hogan The Hawk & Dirty John Crown” where ‘Main Chance’ is described as “moody, beaty – featuring synthesiser.” It’s a stone-cold rhythmic beauty well worth a spin on anybody’s turntable – so, give both a chance.

Co-writer Charles Spurling sang and wrote at King in the late 60s, providing songs for James Brown, Hank Ballard, Junior McCants and Peggy & Artie among others. ‘Ball Of Fire’ is an exceptional song, first recorded by Connie Austin as a smouldering mid-tempo number on which she pours her heart out. It would be updated a year later by Marva Whitney who took it at a faster funkier pace. Charles Spurling remembers Connie as a good-looking, fast-living girl who was murdered in Los Angeles soon after.

Spurling was a good singer himself and had five King releases between 1967 and 1969. The excellent ‘You’ve Got Love On Top Of Love’ failed to make it to wax until now. Kent found the tape in the King vaults and issued it on CD in 2001; now it is on a righteous single.

On the B Side we have the original version of the holy grail from Rikki Aaron with 'Say What's On Your Mind.' This is the first time on vinyl since the original release in 1981. There will be no repress of this release.

The Ebony Rhythm Funk Campaign hailed from Indianapolis and consisted of quite a few members. With its early inception they were called Ebony Rhythm Band with some singles on Lamp records in 1969. Over the years with many band member changes and falling outs The Ebony Rhythm Funk Campaign was formed around 72/73. The new band acquired a recording contract with Universal City, a subsidiary of major label MCA. The group released one self entitled Lp in 1973. The group had some success but didn't acquire any further recording time with MCA. Band members Lester Johnson, Michael Woods and Pamela Tanner plus a few others went on to record a Billboard hit with "How's your wife and my child" on Carl Davis Innovation ll record label in 1975. An LP deal was negotiated which led to their 1976 Lp "Watchin' you, watchin' me" for Chi Sound records in 1976. Super Disco Edits in conversation with Trombone player Michael Woods discovered an earlier Lp that was recorded and funded by the band during 1973/74 Michael had kept the studio reels and some 47 years later we finally helped him get them baked and transferred. The A side later got released on the "Watchin you watchin me" LP but in 1976 they changed the song into a more disco funk polished version, the discovery of these 1973 reels captures a much more raw funk workout, which we feel is superior than the latter. Flip over the single to what is a beautiful sweet soul ballad written and sung by Pam Tanner. The sparse nature of the production tenderness of Pams vocals has already caught the attention of some of the Firme lowrider kats on the West Coast.

York Pennsylvania born and raised, R&B vocalist Carman Bryant has performed throughout the U.S. and all over the world. There’s a saying in the Harrisburg/York Pa.area “If you want a seat, you better get there early” for a performance by Carman and her band. Carman's recording "Midnight Star” is an unreleased recording that was produced many years ago by Cecil DuValle of the Teddy Pendergrass band. The original studio masters were lost when Cecil moved to England because Teddy Pendergrass stopped performing. "Take a Chance" is a duet by Doug Payne and Carman from the same recording sessions at Alpha International Studios that was located in South Philadelphia. This was during the time that Doug Payne was on the "We are Family" tour with Philly recording group "Sister Sledge''. Doug Payne is a graduate of Howard University Washington D.C., and Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music & Art in New York City, this is the same school that was used for the movie and television series "fame" starring Debbie Allen and Irene Cara. Doug had two songs signed with Tsop Gamble & Huff's publishing that were selected to be recorded by Phyliss Hyman before her death. In 1981 Doug Payne started his own label in Philadelphia with the release of "holiday" by Doug Payne & Polygon. Carman and her son Terrell Bryant aka Nakuu both have been busy lately recording new music to hit the scene around the same time.Terrell Bryant is the son of Jason Bryant who started The SOS Band. Doug's wife June Payne is a former member of Philadelphia recording group The "Three Degrees".

The group "Onyx" was formed in 1972 the members were Aaron and Wendell Basey, Malvin Scott, and Ronald Busby. Ronald left the group to pursue other interests and was replaced by Cornelius Weekly. We were reared in the San Francisco Bay Area, specifically Oakland and Alameda, California. We grew up singing in our School and Church Choirs. We all began singing in quartets while we were teenagers in Junior High School. Malvin sang in the group Morry Williams and the Kids. They had a national hit titled "Are You, My GirlFriend." The Basey brothers sang with several groups in California, none with any recording history. The Basey's were the founding members of the soul group Natural Four. After that, along with Malvin, they started the singing group "Onyx." We were influenced during our teenage years by groups like the Spaniels, Moonglows and later the Temptations and Whispers. We also loved the sound of Marvin Gaye, and Earth, Wind, and Fire. At that time the Spaniels and Moonglows were who we tried to sing like. Marty Dahl, who wrote and produced several of our recording sessions got us a contract with Yew Records of New York City. We were happy to sign with Yew as they had previous success with the recording by the Intrigues of the song "In a Moment." We recorded "Something You're Trying to Hide," and "You Never Fell to Amaze me," on the Yew Record label. We met Marty while he was playing piano in a practice room at Cal State Hayward University. He was a musician with his own group, playing drums, keyboards, and singing. He was also doing promotion work for various record companies. He asked us to audition for him in a room over a nightclub in Jack London Square. After the audition, a relationship was established which exists to this day. Later, the Basey Brothers started their own label NIA. The name NIA was selected for, in the Swahili language, the word NIA means purpose. The first song recorded by Onyx on the NIA label was "Break It Loose." They subsequently recorded the songs "Time Take me Back," and "Keep on Waiting." Other songs were recorded but never released, "Help Me," "Give a Little Bit," and "Spellbound."

Discs of Fun and Love are back and proud to present their fourth release - Rubeinstein - Joy b/w Somehow (Make A Way) Fully licensed and remastered by our friends at Grammy nominated mastering house The Carvery, this is the label’s first gospel record. The songs are taken off Rubeinstein McClure’s only solo record “Rubeinstein” written by her brother Fletcher Washington, Jr and originally released on Locus Records in 1979. A relatively obscure and hard to get by recording, this has been a DFL favourite for a long time. Side A, sung by “Ruby” McClure is a funky soulful gospel heat full of joy whose vocal can give goosebumps to everyone who hears it while side B sung by Fletcher Washington himself is a slower, deeply soulful piece of gospel music. Evangelist Mother “Ruby” McClure started her singing career as part of the Washington Sisters where she sang with her brothers and sisters under the direction of Fletcher Washington and opened up for the Staple Singers, Sam Cooke, The Dixie Hummingbirds and the Swan Silvertones to name a few. Later she was a member and lead soloist with the Radio Choir of Brooklyn’s Institutional Church of God in Christ under the direction of Bishop JC White as well as being a member of the JC White Singers. As part of the JC White Singers she appeared on Max Roach’s “Lift Every Voice and Sing” album and is the lead vocal in “Motherless Child” from the same record. In Bishop JC White’s words, “In our choir days, “Ruby” reigned in the Key of F. Anything that I wrote in that key I was almost certain was going to her voice, to be complimented with her signature melismas, trills and squall. Under the unction of God, Ruby was unexplainable. She could prick even the most stony heart with her impassioned delivery yet meek demeanour. When I needed the emotion of the song to really be delivered, I knew to call Ruby.” Sadly, Mother McClure passed away on the 18th of July last month, just weeks before our announcement. We’d like to thank Bishop JC White for putting us in touch with the wife of the late Fletcher Washington, Jr and Carolyn Washington herself for giving us her blessing to reissue these beautiful songs.

Originally released in the mid-to-late '70s on "The Electric Jazz of Gus Giordano" album, The Johnny Frigo Sextet's covers of "Scorpio" and "Spill The Wine" get a long-overdue 7 inch release. Previously included on Ubiquity's Groove Merchant "Trippin" compilation in 1996 and then again on "Johnny Frigo's Collected Works" re-issue by Luv N'Haight in 2002, "Scorpio" has been on the radar for a while with "Spill The Wine" now getting a proper re-introduction to folks who may have been unfamiliar with the Sextet's other works.

Side A features an over-the-top funky version of “Scorpio” by the legend Dennis Coffey. The original in and of itself is considered one of the top tunes in the Funk (and sampling) canon but this cover takes it further w/ open drums, wild organ taking the lead and a thundering bassline holding it all down underneath. "Spill The Wine" on the flip transports the original into Latin meets Jazz-Funk territory w/ flourishes of Exotica heaped in for good measure.

Favorite Recordings proudly presents Recalling You, a dazzling Disco/Jazz-Funk new single EP by our longtime friend and label mate Andre Solomko.

Born in Ukraine and based in Finland for a while, Andre Solomko is a rich and engaging personality, but above all, a talented saxophonist, composer and engineer, with contagious passion. Since they met 7 years ago, Andre and Pascal Rioux’s (founder of Favorite Recordings) collaboration resulted in 3 albums and a couple of singles acclaimed internationally. Primarily known for a sound mixing Jazz-Funk, with European Soundtracks, Pop and Soul influences, Andre Solomko’s skills for composition and production are much wider. Almost 2 years ago, he’s therefore demonstrated his versatility when delivering the hot Disco anthem “Le Premier Disco Sans Toi”.
This first attempt definitely seduced many DJs and collectors, and it seems Andre enjoyed the trip too and decided to embark for it again with “Recalling You”. For this new single, Andre’s idea was to revive two of his past compositions, tailoring brand new glamorous Disco suit and arrangements for it. Backed again by a close team of musicians and the beautiful and charming vocals of Charlotta Kerbs, the new session was recorded live and analog as usual, and then brilliantly mixed in France by Jordan Kouby at Question de Son studios. It ended with what might be Andre Solomko’s best level of productions and sound so far.
To make it short, “I Recall” and “Teasing You” felt in love and had a baby at the nightclub… here comes Recalling You, packed in a 45rpm 12inch vinyl edition and coming with a hot Dub edit by Charles Maurice on B-side.

In 1980, during her run on Broadway in the musical, “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and before being cast in “Dreamgirls”, singer, actress and Detroit native Roz Ryan teamed up with the legendary team of Dennis Coffey And Mike Theodore on a six song album that wound up being unreleased.

Recently, the folks at Super Disco Edits released this 45 featuring Roz’ taking on Preston Glass’ “Keep Shining / Put Love Back” composed by Eric McClinton.

Both tracks were from the Theodore and Coffey sessions and make their debut for lovers of dancin’ (“Keep Shining”) and romancin’ (“Put Love Back”). Enjoy!

This pairing was slated to be Event 218 in late 1974, but as no copies have emerged, it can be assumed that the single was pulled. It is hard to know why, but judging by its rarity the Anderson Brothers GSF release of ‘I Can See Him Loving You’ was a commercial failure - perhaps Event didn’t want to suffer a similar fate.

This reading of producer Ray Dahrouge’s song is more soulful and vital than the Anderson Brothers which was huge on the Northern Soul scene, but without this take for competition at the time.

Maybe the steamy finale to the Mayberry’s version was a bit too much for radio play, but surely the brilliance of the ballad A side would have compensated for that. Their loss; our gain.

Dee Ervin suffered collateral damage from GRC/Aware’s bankruptcy. He only got to release two mediocre sides on Hotlanta but these recordings match anything he created in a successful career throughout the 60s & 70s.

By 1974 he was as much a composer as artist, but he excels at both on these two numbers that were fully produced and ready for release. ‘You Make Me Happy’ is a terrific uptempo dance track that recently featured on Cdkend 512 “Masterpieces Of Modern Soul; Vol 6”.

‘Give Me One More Day’ was issued erroneously in 1975 as a Tribe LP track on ABC, but the session details clearly have it as a Dee Ervin recorded number.

Randle was a jobbing Louisiana guitarist and bandleader, whose group recorded for Eddie Shuler of Goldband’s Anla label.

This reissue is a faithful repro reissue of the original and sought-after 1967 45.

Thee Marloes give us with another killer of a two-sider while they finish recording their debut album.The A side "Logika" is a laid back tune about where the head and the heart meet and how they often don't see things the same way. Natassya Sianturi's honeyed vocals float over a beautifully arranged track driven by guitar riffs, organ, and reverb drenched stick hits. They manage to put the perfect amount of paint on the canvas with the band sounding tight as ever hitting all the changes that bring in the earworm chorus that stays in your head even if you don't speak Indonesian. The B side "True Love" finds Thee Marloes dipping back into the soulful side of jazz but this time with a beat ballad that could soundtrack a Tarantino movie and hold court with the best of the genre. This one leans you back in your chair setting the mood for a smokey lounge affair and a strong drink. Following on from the successes of their first two LPs, "Kalba" and "Small Small", Isaac Birituro & The Rail Abandon return with the "Kontonbili EP". A collection of seven tracks that trace the traditional West African roots of their sound whilst adding their unique touch, largely courtesy of Isaac's xylophone, Sonny Johns' folky embellishments and the vocal prowess of powerful Ghanaian songstress Wiyaala.

The lead single "Hado Deeli" roughly translates to "My Rival" and is a vibrant discussion between two rivals, one of whom is always making a fuss about anything and everything, even when things are all good! "Gargar", with its collaboration of xylophone, whistles, Wiyaala's effervescent vocals and relentless groove represents, quite literally, the band's "joining together" for this EP. In contrast, "I Know" sees Sonny Johns takes over lead vocal duties to lament the breakdown of a relationship accompanied by muted horns and Wiyaala's soothing backing vocals. "Nimmbalia" continues in a mellow and reassuring tone before emerging as one of the most uplifting and simultaneously fierce cuts on the EP! The traditional version of "Bawa" - the original take of which can be found on last year's "Small Small" LP - strips things back a little, before culminating in a battle of xylophone, whistles and choir. "Yeri Villa" has a wonderfully laid back, sun drenched feel with some truly beautiful vocal refrains, and finally - only available on the digital version - comes the deeply percussive and trance inducing "Darpeny", rounding off a rather stunning EP from this cross continental outfit.

All tracks feature Ghanaian singer, song-writer, model and actor, Wiyaala. With a strong fanbase in Africa and beyond, "the lioness" made her mark on Wah Wah 45s and BBC 6 Music last year when she featured on the A-listed "Senye", described as "perfection" by Annie Mac and "pure joy!" by Tash LC.

'Thumping For You' is a hypnotic floaty soulful funk banger with that catchy guitar that reminds you right away of the Coco and Ben connection, and the loose vibe just hits the dancefloor.
Brandon's song keeps the hypnotic loose vibe going for the flip, I can see me late night dancing to this one outside in the hills this summer.

Abby Jeanne has been an artist her entire life. While growing up in Milwaukee, WI, she was indoctrinated into the arts via a public art schooling experiment in the 90s. As a pre-teen, she was socially adopted by a Rock N Roll cafe cult, where she wrote music, painted, and started her deep infatuation with records, especially 60s pop and underground soul/rock n' roll via the haunted jukebox that lived there. A series of family tragedies, including the loss of her sister, left Abby living in a car with her guitar, which led to her traveling overseas and carving out a music career for herself. Through it all, she is currently a New York City-based multimedia artist who has built a name for herself through not only her music, but her visual art and event throwing. After years of hustling to create DIY releases and garnering the support of national radio stations across the country, 2022 saw Abby Jeanne release the single "That's Where We Are" on Philadelphia's Eraserhood Sound. Today she is back with a brand new 45, Know Better / Sage and Cigarettes. Both of these unforgettable tracks feature Eraserhood Sound's signature in-house analog synth and soul production, and they represent some of Abby's best, most inspired work to date. A-side "Know Better" is a rollicking pop-soul party-starter that features a four on the floor beat, electrifying guitar riffs, and deceptively profound lyrics that examine the selfishness and vapidity of today's society. On the flip side, "Sage and Cigarettes" is one of the most powerful and intimate songs Abby has ever recorded. The track, with its slow-burning shuffle and classic instrumentation reminiscent of Otis Redding's most emotional work, is a direct reflection of her experience healing as a traumatized woman in a modern world. Repress! Rare underground cult classic Running The Mardi Gras by Boco. Those lucky enough to find an original copy are paying upwards of $1000.00 for this truly unique psych rock / funk gem on 45.From the title to the sound to the cryptic lyrics "Running the Mardi Gras" seems to confirm all the mystique that surrounds the southern Louisiana Bayous and Cajun culture. This record is a family affair. It started one morning when one Mr. Latour, the father of the group, was shaving in the mirror and a song struck him. It was to be about Mardi Gras, not the beaded revelry of New Orleans familiar to most, but the traditions of rural Louisiana, where one would "run the Mardi Gras," going house to house getting home cooking from the neighbors. He would sing the song every day in the car and the children of the family soaked up the spirit of the song.Playing and performing was just part of life for the family. Mr. Latour had bought studio equipment for his children to record on, which he kept in their house. Growing up in the shadow of New Orleans, the Latour children listened to the sounds of Funk and R&B that came in on the radio, which was the biggest influence on the family projects' sound. Together the four Latour children, with the eponymous Boco Latour on lead vocals, and a couple of local musicians recorded "Running the Mardi Gras" in the Latour home. Feeling that they really had something, the makeshift band decided to record a b-side. The guitarist had a song he had been working on and they recorded what would become "Smile" as well. The two songs were pressed under the Laughing Eye label, nothing more than the heading under which the Latour family released their music, and mostly sold the 45 at gigs around southern Louisiana. The recorded output under Laughing Eye was understandably limited, but locals still remember well Boco's powerful voice from her shows in clubs around the bayous. Boco and George Latour still live around Baton Rouge and continue to make music and play in the area.

The B side is something of a Big Crown family affair as Bacao covers "Murkit Gem" from El Michels Affair's Yeti Season album. The tune lends itself to the pans with its infectious melodies and the way BRSB plays it, it takes on a James Bond spy chase energy that works perfectly.
