The musicians of the discodelic soul band Say She She, who chose their name as a silent reference to Nile Rodgers ("C'est chi-chi!: It's Chic!"), release their second album "Silver" on the heels of an epic breakthrough year that is getting brighter by the day. The three strong voices of Piya Malik (El Michels Affair regular and former backup singer for Chicano Batman), Sabrina Mileo Cunningham and Nya GazelleBrown front the band. The harmonizing trio was born in a classic New York story of friends who met on the road to music: the dance floors of downtown, the floorboards of the Lower East Side and the rooftops of Harlem. "Silver" was written and recorded live to tape earlier this year at Killion Sound Studio in North Hollywood and produced by Sergio Rios (of Orgone). While these analog recording techniques help anchor Say She She's sound in a foundation of sonic warmth that can only be achieved with tape, it's also their process of producing the track in the moment and capturing the magic of collaborative creativity that has led to their sound being described as "a glorious overload of joyous enthusiasm and spiritual uplift" (mojo) and "steeped in the quirky post-disco spirit of early 80s Nyc" (The Guardian). We are also treated to a rare and sought-after Pennsylvanian funk / AOR bomb by Maxwell, a stunning modern soul tune 'High On You' by Freedom, and self-released Brazilian 45s by Banda 22 and Zé Da Lata. P.J. City's 'Straight Forward (Non-Stop)' is gospel-disco perfection, and we also have 'Dame Solamente Amor’, a sublime, soul beauty from Chile by Rogers Mitchell. Many of these artists featured in this compilation aren't household names, but they deserve their moment to shine, to be heard, loved and appreciated for their artistry.

‘Hope For Love’ turned up on a one-off master tape which arrived at Ace HQ courtesy of Grapevine Records, who knew we were working with Darrow. Darrow thought the tape was one he and his stepfather Johnnie Haygood made to interest Ray Charles. Ray eventually signed Darrow to his Crossover label. Darrow remembered cutting it in the early 70s, a period when he was relatively inactive recording wise. It has proved to be very popular with the two-step crowd and a vinyl single version will be very welcome.

Darrow’s original recording of the Grey & Hanks’ song ‘No Limit’ was issued by Kent in 2012 on CD and as a single. That limited-run 45 sold out quickly but demand has continued to grow, making the current price upwards of £100. ‘No Limit’ was also recorded and released by both Jean Terrell and Breakwater in 1979.

The recent find of four Joe Graham recordings in the GRC/Aware tapes has shown there was much more to Joe’s talents than the southern soul of his 60s Chant recordings and the synthesiser, electro pop he recorded for various Atlanta labels in the 80s. ‘Higher Than High’ is a soulful disco number featuring a relentless beat. The track already has a strong following, thanks to advance plays in Europe and the UK from DJ Dave Thorley. This track, along with three other numbers, were recorded around 1976 for the GRC stable – just as the company was floundering so badly that the songs were left as unmixed multi-track tapes. Now mixed the demand for this one will be high.

We’ve taken the opportunity of including another excellent, unreleased at the time, recording from the revered John Edwards. ‘It’s Got To Be The Real Thing For Me This Time’ is an uptempo Sam Dees song, unheard until the 1990s release of the first batch of GRC/Aware tapes

Reuben Howell was from Greenwood, Minnesota based mainly in Florida throughout his career. He was the first white soul singer to sign to Motown Records where he recorded two albums. “You Can’t Stop A Man In Love” was also covered by Cark Carlton and The Temptations. The Supremes also recorded it as “You Can’t Stop A Girl In Love”. Both sides of this 7” are in demand. They were originally released together on Motown in 1973. “You Can’t Stop A Man In Love” on its own has sold for over £200, both sides together currently at £300 for a mint copy of these two 70s northern/modern crossover tracks.

Dayton were founded in 1980 by David Shawn Sandridge from Dayton, Ohio. David was an original member of the group Sun that began recording for Capitol Records in 1974. He later formed Magnum before founding Dayton, staying with them for all their albums and recording separately as a member of the group Colorblind in 1984. Dayton recorded four albums for Capitol/United Artists from which the songs on this 7” are the most fondly remembered (alongside “The Sound of Music”). Both have previously been released separately of each other on 7” but have become more sought after in recent times. “Promise Me” (1983) is the extended album version on 7” for the first time. “Eyes On You” (1980) is the original and now rare 7” length version.

Deadbundy consists of DJ/trackmaker Motive (programming, sampler, key), former Hepburn member Masahiro Yamaguchi (vo, g), and Champa member Junichi Kinoshita (vo, g, key), all of whom have established themselves in the jazzy hip-hop and chill-out downtempo scenes. Two tracks from Numero’s Eccentric Soul compilation which documented Bob Abrahamian’s passion and devotion to celebrating unknown Chicagoland group harmony music. His untimely passing in 2014 left a huge hole for many music devotees. SO, I CAN Make This Change was THE Krash BAND’s only record, it came out in 1976 and is a revered 45 amongst serious collectors. With it’s crisp bass, phased harmonies and the crowning accomplishment, the seraphic falsetto by Evelyn Holder!ONENESS previously known as The Audition’s recorded Hard TO Know in 1977 for Cincinnati’s AMG label, alas this sweet harmony jewel never got released and was only heard by those who tuned into Bob’s Sitting in the Park radio shows until the compilation put that to rights.

Please note this song was rescued / restored and there is tape damage in parts.
