Das Album Songwriter entstand im Jahr 1993 als Cash ein Album mit selbst geschriebenen Songs aufnahm. Jedoch vergaß er dieses Album prompt wieder, als er bei American Recordings unterschrieb und sich daraufhin nochmal einer komplett neuen Generation von Fans als einer der besten Songwriter der Welt präsentierte. Diese (fast) vergessenen 11 Songs des Songwriters wurden nun von seinem Sohn John Carter und dem langjährigen Produzenten von Cash, David Ferguson, überarbeitet. Diese sind nun erstmalig als LP verfügbar.

A Restored Piece of Palestinian Sonic History

More than 50 years ago, teenager Zeinab Shaath recorded a set of revolutionary folk music — the first English-language songs to lift up the Palestinian cause to the wider world. Inspired by Vietnam-era protest music from Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, “The Urgent Call of Palestine'' record was intended to share the stories and messages of Palestinian resistance to an international audience.

The first song Shaath composed in her parents home was the titular “Urgent Call of Palestine,” with lyrics from the Indian poet Lalita Panjabi. At just 16 years old, she began playing folk music on a guitar that her sister brought back from studies in the U.S. As young people across the West took to the streets to protest the American imperialist war, Shaath saw parallels in the fight for Palestinian liberation and set out to celebrate that struggle in her musical poetry.

Shaath’s stirring performances of “The Urgent Call of Palestine” song galvanized leading Palestinian artists, intellectuals and youth. In 1973, Shaath was immortalized in a starry film shot by exiled Palestinian artist Ismail Shammout in the mountains of Lebanon.

Shaath recorded three other songs that drew on the poetry of luminaries such as Mahmoud Darwish, Mueen Biseso and Abd El-Wahab Bayati. The resulting 7-inch album was designed to reach the global stage at a time when artists, writers and musicians across the Arab world created art highlighting the Palestinian struggle. Armed with a guitar and her dulcet voice, Shaath went on to perform across three continents, carrying her hopeful message to young people across the world.

Record labels Discostan and the Majazz Project are honored to reissue a lovingly remastered version of “The Urgent Call of Palestine,” bringing Shaath's songs of protest and solidarity to the ears of a new generation. Shaath’s place in a global history of anti-colonial protest music has until recently been overlooked.

For singer/songwriter Jesse Daniel, country music is nothing short of a life force. With his unmistakable deep voice and rebellious image, he not only left a lasting mark on the music world, but also on pop culture in general. With over 90 million records sold worldwide, Cash is one of the best-selling artists of all time. His cross-genre music encompassed country, rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk and gospel. This crossover appeal earned him the rare honor of being inducted into the Country Music, Rock and Roll and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. In the 1960s, Johnny Cash began to present himself as the "Man in Black" and to wear only black clothing during his performances. This choice was not only a stylistic statement, but also a political one. It cemented his reputation as an "outlaw" and country music rebel. Johnny Cash's legacy spans generations and genres. His influence ranges from country and rock to punk and alternative. Artists of various styles have cited Cash as a source of inspiration, and numerous tribute albums have been released in honor of his music. SONGBOOK WITH FRIENDS is a collection of his most beautiful songs, some interpreted in extraordinary versions by other artists.

Noelle & The Deserters bring South-Western honky tonk and songs of heartbreak from the high deserts of New Mexico to the golden hills of California. Fronted by singer-songwriter Noelle Fiore, their music draws inspiration from the likes of Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn, Marty Robbins, J.J Cale, Gene Clark, Townes Van Zandt, and the great outlaw country players. The Deserters include seasoned players Graham Norwood (Bryan Scary, Graham Norwood) on guitar, Alicia Vanden Heuvel (The Aislers Set) on bass, David Cuetter (Tarnation) on pedal steel, and Jerry Fiore (Sonic Love Affair)on drums, all based in the Bay Area and Sacramento. Fiore was raised in Taos, New Mexico. As a guitar player and vocalist, she was a founding member of Sweet Chariot, singing and playing guitar / banjo. Later, she and Tim Cohen (The Fresh & Onlys) founded the band Magic Trick, recording four full length albums for labels Hardly Art and Captured Tracks. Fiore is also a current member of the Shannon Shaw Band, on guitar and vocals.

High Desert Daydream is Noelle & The Deserters debut album, out on Speakeasy Studios SF. The songs on the album, written by Fiore, touch on life in the west, growing up in Taos, living in California, songs of love, memory, marriage, work, good times, and bad times. Like all classic country music, the songs are infused with a sense of real-life struggles and living life in the everyday. Fiore’s incredible voice carries the album, and her songs are at once moving, powerful, tender, humorous, and intimately relatable.

Produced by Noelle Fiore and Alicia Vanden Heuvel, High Desert Daydream feels country, yet of the west, of California and New Mexico, of experimental fronts in country music, and is truly a work of beauty.
