Adam Beyer and Green Velvet’s behemoth co-production ’Simulator’ gets a trio of fresh remixes.

Something special happens with Beyer collaborates with Curtis Jones aka Green Velvet, with last year’s ‘Simulator’ a timely reminder of their musical synergy, following the 2019 classic ‘Space Date’ with Layton Giordani.
A year on from its release, Drumcode treats us to three contrasting interpretations that epitomise the sonic breadth of the label in 2024.

Mha Iri is first up having established herself as one of Drumcode’s most vital go-to producers in recent times. The Scottish artist turns in a blazing masterclass, taking the nasty bass stabs of the original and utilising them as thunderous motifs throughout her remix, as she brings intensity in spades with plenty of thrilling builds and drops along the way.

Emerging Australian artist Odd Mobb is next, whose music has been championed by the likes of Fred Everything and Skrillex. He brings the energy throughout the four-minute rework, amplifying all the low-end elements, while adding fresh bursts of colour. It’s a dynamic reinterpretation that will keep listeners on their feet.

Chris Avantgarde, whose contributions to Drumcode have so far comprised an outstanding collab with Kevin de Vries ‘Mind Control’ and an A-Sides contribution ‘The Last Time’, returns with the goods and lives up to his boundary-pushing pseudonym. This has more sides than a rubix cube and shows the German’s sound design class, encompassing elements of breaks, bass, electronica and techno, yet still manages not to sound like anything else out there.

Following the most prolific year of his production career, Adam Beyer starts 2024 right with another standout EP, Let’s Begin’, which takes influence from the ‘90s Drumcode sound with a modern touch. Looking backwards to go forwards, the three-track work kicks off with ‘Let’s Begin’ and sees Beyer lean on faster tempos and rugged rhythms to craft a high octane, atmosphere heavy cut that hits you right between the eyes. An absolutely cracking peak-time tune that highlighted recent gigs at Blitz Club in Munich and Amnesia in Milan. ‘Computerized’ is a masterclass in dancefloor mentalism, bringing forth shades of hardcore influenced vocals and menacing synth lines reminiscent of early 2000s Frankfurt. No surprise this brought maximum vibes at Beyer’s NYE gigs in the States at Teksupport and Insomniac’s Countdown NYE event. Fresh out of the studio, ‘Red Room’ is a dreamy belter that takes in subtle hints of classic four-to-the-floor grooves reminiscent of UK hard dance, before an industrial synth section ramps up the intensity. Exhilarating stuff. “This new three-tracker is on the rawer techno tip and is an ode to Drumcode’s earlier material. It’s a take on the ‘90s sound blended with new modern elements. The Drumcode founder is measured when it comes to signing music to his own imprint, biding his time till the stars align. His last individual outing was 2015’s ‘Stone Flower’ EP, which included the thrilling label favorite ‘What You Need’. A succession of classy collaborations followed, linking with DC’s most vital artists highlighted by ‘Your Mind’ with Bart Skils, proclaimed one of the best tracks of the last decade by Mixmag. An EP that gives a nod to uncertain times, while remaining resolutely positive, ‘No Defeat No Retreat’ was written during Beyer’s fruitful production sessions during lock down. The opening track, ‘Park People’ sets the pace with an energetic, 80’s nu wave creating the track’s spine. Its hypnotic energy stems from a powerful synth riff and vocal sample culminating in a skillfully balanced track that neatly combines the old with the new. The title track is a study in contrasts, deftly crafting a muted, nagging vocal hook and infectious bass line into a slice of forward-facing, edgy techno. Adam Beyer shares his first Truesoul release in eight years, linking with Raxon for a rare collaborative outing. This year has been one of Adam Beyer’s most prolific of his career, so it seems fitting he’d end it with a return to Drumcode’s little brother imprint Truesoul. His last dance on Truesoul was way back in 2015 with the masterful quartet of rollers ‘Time Flies’, which highlighted the Ibiza summer back then. Meanwhile the Barcelona-based Egyptian Raxon has contributed a pair of EPs to Truesoul, ‘Heliopolis’ and ‘Cosmic Cure’, since his debut in 2017. A Raxon production is a special thing – otherworldly and colourful, inspired by the vastness of the universe. The pair took their time swapping ideas back and forth until Beyer shared the main bassline groove for the Day Mix of ‘The Signal’ and the collaboration immediately started to take shape. The track is built around a riveting call-and-response synth lead, while a mélange of gritty drums with a foot in electro, cosmic and psy, drive proceedings forward. The Night Mix increases the intensity, tuning the main melody for late-night, pumping dancefloor moments.

Adam Beyer invites the legendary DJ Rush to make his Drumcode debut, as the pair link for a stirring maiden collaboration, ‘Restore My Soul’. The DC boss holds a deep respect for the iconic Chicago artist, the relationship stretching back 25+ years to their time touring the German techno circuit in the 90s. The title track builds dramatic tension via elastic synths that oscillate alongside Rush’s vocal, taking things to heady levels. ‘Control’ is a thick wedge of industrial-edged rhythms, with Rush’s famous vocal providing a commanding presence throughout. On the B side, ‘Take Me There’ is stirring in composition, transitioning from crushing percussive loops to deep techno funk, before working towards a teased out crescendo as Rush’s hypnotic refrain echoes in the air. A deliciously pumping DJ Rush remix of ‘Restore My Soul’ rounds out the package.

The boss continues to set the standard. Following ‘Legend’, one of the year’s standout techno tracks, we were treated to a supreme collaboration with Green Velvet ‘Simulator’.

Now as 2023 hits the halfway mark, he returns with a pair of aces. The title track is both expansive and immersive, as pin-sharp drums and a powerful chord melody rub shoulders with a vocal that references AI entering the creative space and the intriguing unknown consequences that will result. “I’m fascinated by this and curious to see how it develops, as it’s both a threat for artists, while also being an opportunity to utilise this technology when making art,” Beyer shares.

‘No Hate’ is the perfect sonic contrast, a raw and dirty roller propelled by rhythmic percussion and a strident vocal line. A stomping ‘Trippy Mix’ of ‘No Hate’ rounds out the release.

Originally from Normandy now residing in the country's capital, French DJ and producer Adam Boufeldja (aka Adam Bfd) has been making a serious name for himself, having put out a string of self-released singles and curating his own self-titled Youtube channel.

Adam's tracks have always been vivid, detailed portraits; drawing from memories and influences from around the world, and his latest EP on Running Out Of Steam is no exception; using his eclectic tastes to produce a record truly unique, and brimming with personality.

'I'll be walking' meanders through an always evolving city, creating space and sense of an otherwise chaotic and fleeting world. The track's softly spoken synths hold the torch, while the effortless drums walk us home. 'Call A Taxi' follows suit, a fruitful marriage between shuffling drum patterns and hypnotic tones, while the track's subtle low-end provides the glue; closing off an A side that feels more like a story being told than another dance-floor memento.

Title track 'No Advice' launches the B side on a slightly more ominous tone, in a microcosmic portrait of opposing forces; before 'An Ode To La Condesa' glides through like a letter from an old friend, the smell of fresh ink still prevalent on the page as we're whisked away through the wide-tree lined avenues of La Condesa. The EP comes to a close with 'For The Good Times' combining nostalgic tinged leads, forward-marching drums and sprawling pads that act as a backdrop to another highly impressive EP from one of France's best emerging artists.

180g Vinyl! The summer of 2008, the Echo Inspectors are touring Germany. One of their stops lands them in Koln, after getting their fix of record shopping at Kompakt they would meet up at a local bar with Pawas who just remixed their latest record. Joining the guys for a mid afternoon beer would be local producer and friend of Pawas, Adam Kroll. Fast forward to 2020 and Adam would reappear on the radar as Adam K.Roll with a fresh new dub sound, completely different to the minimal techno records of the mid 2000s. SC016 sees the re-issue of four tracks taken from a little known cassette only release ‘Diet Of Germs’ by British artist and friend Adam Oko. Originally released in 2015 on the now defunct Astro:Dynamics label the four tracks were recorded in Adam’s bedroom studio overlooking Clissold Park in Stoke Newington, London.
Now based in Tokyo but having spent most of his life living between London & Canterbury, as well as producing music and running a regular radio show on NTS radio, Adam also makes mixed media artwork and designs installations & interiors.
All instruments on ‘Diet Of Germs’ were performed by Adam himself except the solo on Suketo which was played by Raven Bush - Kate Bush’s nephew & was actually recorded in Kate’s old studio in South London.

A meeting of the minds between two Israeli DJs and producers. Adam Ten & Mita Gami release a combined two-tracker in September on Crosstown Rebels, dipping into dark and hypnotising waters while maintaining a club-cut aesthetic.

The pair pen a slow-burning chugger on the title track, merging tones of tech house, progressive house and techno. A high-pitched vocal weave’s throughout, in tandem with a distorted synthline and oddball sound FX—one for a wavey dancefloor. On the flip, Night Shift glistens with emotion as tribal-tinged percussion collides with long, drawn-out piano notes. A cosmic creation that blurs the line between melancholia and warmth.

Adam Ten is a Tel Aviv-born producer and resident DJ of institutional club The Block, located in his home city. Ten is a key artist on the Israeli scene, recognised for his all-night sets that blend a myriad of moods in electronic music. He’s played worldwide, spanning stints in Miami, Cape Town and Mykonos, amongst several other regions, and he’s channelled his compelling sound on labels like Diynamic, Multinotes, Disco Halal and Selador. As a co-founder of the event series Terra, Ten curates some of the finest nature-orientated parties in Israel. Mita Gami hails from Tel Aviv. A multi-instrumentalist from a young age, he goes beyond the trope of entertainer. Instead, Gami invites his audience into immersive and almost trippy journeys during his performances via a hybrid set-up and enticing energy on-stage. Releases on Realm Records and Diynamic display his metaphysical approach. Beyond producing, Gami co-runs the label Blue Shadow Records and the Sunrise Kingdom area in Midburn Festival, based in the Negev Desert in Israel.

The latest suite by composer (and Stars Of The Lid co-founder) Adam Wiltzie took shape following a move north from Brussels into the Flemish countryside, although it was initially inspired by a recurring dream wherein “if someone listened to the music I created, then they would die.”

The album uniquely evokes and evades the allure of oblivion, keening between beauty and ruin, forever unresolved. Wiltzie cites the barbiturate of the title as both muse and sacred escape: “When you are sitting face forward on the daily emotional meat grinder of life, I always wished I could have some, so I could just fall asleep automatically and the feeling would not be there anymore.”

Recorded at Wilzie’s home studio, with strings added in Budapest at the old Hungarian National radio facility (Magyar Radio), the tracks feel simultaneously intimate and infinite, unfolding vistas glimpsed in an inner space.

Robert Hampson of English drone rock icons Loop mixed the album, further lending the music a sense of cinematic expanse and oblique hypnosis.

These are fugue states as much as fugues in a literal classical music sense—smeared epiphanies of uncertain memory and spatial dislocation, coaxed from the unconscious and set aloft.

A year and a half has passed since Slovak-Hungarian artist Adela Mede self-released her debut album ‘Szabadság’. Its liner notes described it as “a navigation”, a search through “the personal, familial, cultural, folkloric and geographic of her past and present.” Her second album, ‘Ne Lépj a Virágra’ no longer searches; here, she puts down roots and delves deeper into the earthy reality of her home, Central Europe. Mede sings in three languages with newfound conviction and grace – this is an album of profound faith and confidence in the potential of this fertile soil.

Composed and recorded during the last 18 months in Bratislava, Slovakia – a city where three countries meet, where the East and the West collide – 'Ne Lépj a Virárga' translates to “don't step on the flower”. Its themes – budding potential, recognizing the beauty in the ordinary, solidarity, turning despair into hope – emerged through Mede's wholehearted involvement with her community, teaching singing to both children and adults, and various grassroots volunteering initiatives. It features collaborations with local artists, Mede's singing students, as well as fellow Eastern European contemporary artists Martyna Basta and Wojciech Rusin.

Adela Mede embellishes carefully crafted songs with minimalist and folklore influences, but also embraces more experimental approaches. The result is a collection of quite varied yet consistent pieces which highlight Mede's proficiency as a singer, arranger, producer and improviser. It is a grounded, confident next step for the Bratislava-based artist. Whether her vocals are naked, heavily processed, warped and reversed, or looped and layered; whether the production is sparse and minimalist or overwhelming and swampy; none of that changes the fact that the gentle tentativeness of her debut is gone. This is “Central European music”, at its most striking and meaningful: patient, determined, embracing both complexity and possibility.

Adela Mede is a Slovak-Hungarian artist who self-released her debut album Szabadság in early 2022 to critical acclaim. Live duo Aderal deliver their debut EP Ribah on Blush Recordings. Dropping on 18th November, the release marks their first EP, platformed by Verona-based label Blush Recordings. Ribah channels industrial techno and EBM, embodying sultry sounds composed of winding melodies and raw, noise-driven atmospheres. Aderal explain the concept of the EP. ‘Almost all the aspects of “Ribah” trace back to where we started making music together. The artwork is a photo of a ladder leading to our studio in a derelict building, formerly a primary school. It’s where we met, developed our sound and played our first jams.’ “bznv” opens the EP with a foreboding feel, blending harsh percussive elements with steel-capped drums. Whispery vocals whirl beneath the surface, evoking a ghostly soundscape. An uncompromising intro that displays Aderal’s aesthetic from the get-go. “rbh” follows suit with a distorted synthline and huge drums, illustrating the duo’s penchant for corrosive beats aligned with their live jam approach. Italian DJ and producer VSK delivers a bone-chilling remix of “BZNV,” stitching slithery grooves between stomping drums. The perfect peak-time production. Belgian artist 6siss closes the EP with his remix of “RBH.” Known for penning militant moods, he goes hard and serves a menacing mutation of erratic drums paired with a demonic melody. Proceed with caution. Based in Reggio Emilia in Italy, Nicolò and Reda, aka Aderal, are a live duo who produce techno in its all sprawling forms. Since 2016, the pair have combined their love for music production and created industrial textures, broken-beat techno, and EBM-flavoured melodies. Their musical output evokes shadowy atmospheres and somber moods, simmering with a dancefloor feel. After years of experimenting and crafting an identity that strays from the predictable and instead focuses on a collision of sonic palettes and genres, Aderal are writing their own story—one set to twist and turn, just like their music.

Adesha & Vincent Kwok present their latest EP, highlighting their growth as musical artists as they expand their musical styles to a modern sound with more than a touch of their musical roots from the 80s Crown Me With more than a touch of synthwave and production that is reminiscent of artists such as Cherokee and Fm-84, Crown Me is a song about not giving up, no matter what life throws up in front of us, and that things always seem to work out in the end. WPH label boss Red D has always considered Adham Zahran to be the Moodymann/Theo Parrish of Egypt, so it is only fitting that for his second release on the label Adham joins the WPH U.S. Series ranks. His deep dusty house sound oozes soul and groove and this release is no exception.

Opening track ‘Flowing Green’ kicks off the E.P. with shining chords that will go down like a treat on any house dancefloor in the hands of the right DJ. ‘No Sorrow’ takes things more heady, but make no mistake, it kicks like the proverbial mule if you let it roam free. On the B-side we first have Detroit’s mainstay Brian Kage on remix duties for the final track ‘Picture Of The Tree’, providing that extra motor city funk we all love. The original finishes the proceedings in – dare we say it – deepest fashion to round off another quality outing from the WPH camp.
