Attraktors are a power trio, currently residing in Nottingham. Bass player John Thompson is a veteran of the 2-Tone ska revival, having done stints with both Bad Manners and The Selector. He also spent time in Davy Henderson’s wonderful avant / art pop outfit, The Nectarine No. 9. James Flower was a founding member of post-rockers, Six By Seven, where he supplied saxophone and keys. Antony Hodgkinson previously beat the skins for Derby 'alternatives', Bivouac, and collaborated with Julian Cope. Their debut, self-titled LP was released to some acclaim in the press, on Ali Renault`s Vivod label, last summer. The set referencing influences such as Depeche Mode, Eno, Harmonia, Human League, and Kraftwerk. Ron Basejam, from live-wire festival favourites, Crazy P, has now remixed two choice cuts for Brighton`s Higher Love. 'Heavy Water' rushes in on a siren-like synthetic fanfare, while dramatic, rattling percussion promises some kind of imminent lift-off. Mr. Basejam doesn’t disappoint, delivering a dynamite, deep, bottom-heavy chug, tested by depth-charge sonar blips. A menacing LFO arpeggio propelling the piece out onto the peak-time dance-floor. Its snarl softened slightly as Ron launches that fanfare once more. Moody, magnificent, body-moving, it drops down to a conga break, and then hits you with some real horns, before bringing that bolshy bastard of a beat back. 'Maximum Minimum' initially subdues, suckers, listeners with a more serene start - one of cinematic synths, and kosmische squiggles. Counterpointing this gurgling gear with theremin sighs and epic keyboard arcs. Suddenly this is all then set running, racing, to a riot of rumbling motorik funk. Chunkily bass-ed, its punk edges are eventually buffed by pretty prog harmonies, as the track evolves into an opulent, vocoder-ed, expanse. A piano rolling and rolling, as that robotic voice readies you for ignition on this righteous cosmic rocket. This 10" single comes with a free digital download of the Attraktors debut album. A tasteful composition reminiscent of something from The Higher Intelligence Agency’s ‘Colourform’, and that’s a huge compliment. Teddy Douglas presents Monday Night Studio Sessions Live @ Rockwell is a unique recording from a legendary event that is all about putting the focus on house music's finest artists. Monday Night Studio Sessions @ Rockwell is the brainchild of the imitable house impresario Teddy Douglas and his partner DJ Tanz. The night started in 2017 and ever since has showcased true artistic talent in a perfect setting with the legendary likes of Byron Stingly, Lalah Hathaway, Jasper St Company and Josh Milan, just a few of the animus who have played in the past. This session was live on the Monday and then recorded in Teddy's studio the night after with Davon McCoy on percussion, Charles Dockins on keyboards and the maestro DJ Tanz and Teddy Douglas conducting the show. Standout tracks on this essential collection include the 'I'm Blessed' Remix by Richard Burton with its driving gospel handclaps and Charles Dockin's magical live piano over the top. 'Spanish Joint' is a chunky dance floor party record that builds and builds with mesmerizing and hypnotic Spanish guitar played by Skip and the Whole Nine Yards. It is the Monday night theme song and gets played twice a night. 'You Can Do It' by Barbara Tucker, Zhana, and Teddy Douglas was the first single from the LP last year and epitomizes the musical house grooves you can expect at one of these sessions. Rochelle Fleming's 'Nobody's Fool' and 'Get Lifted' by Andrea Holdclaw were two strong singles before the pandemic, and 'We Belong Together' from the voice of house, Mr Bryon Stingily, and Teddy Douglas is the 100th release on the label, and it has a catchy hook that adds to the legacy of Byron Stingly classics. 'Rise (instrumental)' from Teddy Douglas is an absolute crowd favourite with powerful grinding organs that wail and moan with intensity throughout the tune. 'Gotta Get Away' is DJ Tanz's first production and an absolute killer with a techy 80's edge design to get the floor pumping. Add in the live and off-the-cuff happenings of Navasha Daya scatting to the crowd over 'Supernova Spinning' and percussionist Davon McCoy and saxophonist Brandon Moultrie having a jam session - you have a magical session captured in all its glory. Celebrated UK producer Preditah makes his debut on Palm Recs with ‘Glucose’ & ‘1950’. The two-tracker sees Preditah going back to the roots of his iconic UK garage infused dance-floor sound. The double a-side acts as the third release on the label, fresh from the success of DRAMA’s Don’t Hold Back last month and Girls Of The Internet in May. Preditah rose to prominence in the UK grime scene, signing to iconic collective Boy Better Know in 2013 before going on to produce official remixes for the likes of Disclosure, Skepta and Robyn to name a few. His productions have achieved BPI Gold and BPI Platinum status on several occasions, including 2017’s smash On My Mind with Jorja Smith and 2019’s So High with Mist & Fredo, the latter landing at number seven in the ‘Official UK Singles Chart’. Preditah described how the release came to fruition, stating: “In this present moment I am in love with tech house, so this is my take on the genre. I've played a lot of shows in Ibiza and I can imagine Glucose going down well in that environment. 1950 represents a time before my time, a time where the 'bassline' was the top-line melody and the surrounding elements complimented it. I made this for the club scene.” That Balearic feel is felt right from the get-go on Glucose, as four-four drum patterns converge on a pumping, house-led groove. Echt! - an instrumental, futuristic four-piece inspired by the concepts absorbed in electronic music and musical production. Taking inspiration from artists including Jonwayne, DJ Rashad, Deantoni Parks, J Dilla, Dorian Concept and Aphex Twin, Echt! combine electro, hip-hop, trap, funk and futuristic jazz, resulting in a distinct and unique sound.

On the 24th September, Echt! are set to release their highly anticipated debut album 'inwane' via the groove-obsessed, Gent-based label Sdban Ultra. Releasing their debut EP 'douf' in 2019, the Brussels quartet has not stopped working, recently releasing three sublime live studio sessions titled the BREWmixes which received support from tastemakers including Lefto, Worldwide FM and Belgian national radio station Studio Brussel (StuBru).

Echt means 'vrai de vrai' - 'true' or 'real' in brusseleir (Brabantian dialect of Brussels). The name is a direct reference to the fact that their sound transmission is 'real', performed with conventional musical instruments as oppose to computer music which the production might suggest. It also relates to the fact that none of the members of the band are originally from Brussels - bassist Federico Pecoraro is from Italy, keyboardist Dorian Dumont is from France and drummer Martin Méreau and guitarist Florent Jeunieaux are both from the Mons region on Belgium.

"For our first album, we wanted to go into deeper beats. We were listening a lot to trap, gritty hip-hop & bass music, and we tried to emulate those kinds of beats on our instruments. The darkish mood of those music genres was fitting for us with this strangest year of 2020. But we also wanted to give a contrast with some brighter parts, where the human feeling is more present. This duality continued in the mixing process by pushing or destroying some sounds, adding electronic textures & effects, but also keeping some sounds really acoustic & organic. The result is for us a mature album: the feeling of electronic music emulated on instruments is confirmed but the human vibe stays central."

From the abstract patterns of 'Permanent' and melodic atmospherics of 'Dunes' to the futuristic funk of 'Charlier', Echt! look to emulate the producer's off-beats, the compressor's swell, the repeating samples or the DJ's transitions. Elsewhere, the trap-heavy sounds of '500gr.' and subby bass stylings of 'Champi' push things forward, before the scatter rhythms of 'Kiekebiche' and weighty rumblings of 'Drache' integrate the inhuman heritage of electronic music and 're-humanise' it.

The album is a collection of reflective and melancholic cinematic tracks with clear references to jazz and neo-classicism where organic elements merge with electronic textures and emotional vocal samples. The album is teased with the first single “Into the Void (Part 1)” – a dark and hazy dystopia accompanied by beautiful piano chords. The album came to life on a 14-day trip to Istanbul and the majority of the tracks, including the first single “Into the Void”, are created entirely from samples and programming.

Kaae & Batz has previously released two albums, Basement Tales (2015) and Mosaic (2019), as well as composed scores for several international film productions which have garnered attention and critical acclaim in the industry. The story about childhood friends Kaspar Kaae (cody) and Brian Batz (Sleep Party People) dates back to their teenage years in Bornholm where they were both born and raised. They went to high school together, cultivated their shared interest in music, and played together in bands. These years became the cornerstone of their friendship and musical collaboration.

With L.U.S.H, Kaae & Batz shines a light on Danish electronica. The album is released 29th October on a limited-edition LP (180g) and on all streaming platforms.

To mark EPM’s 20th anniversary we’ve been releasing a series of EPs, each one focussing on a different genre. In May we brought you a taste of Techno with Robert Hood, Ben Sims, James Ruskin and Mark Broom each delivering their distinct production skills, whilst this September sees the release of our second EP bringing together cuts by some of Electro’s leading lights - The Advent & Zein Ferreira, Carl Finlow, Detroit’s Filthiest and Modulator (a.k.a. Freddie Fresh). For the third and final EP in the series we turn our attention to House music, and once again we’ve commissioned four brand new and exclusive tracks from artists who we’ve had the pleasure to work with over the years. First up is none other than a Detroit Techno founding father and the TechnoSoul innovator himself Eddie Fowlkes, who delivers a classy opener in ‘1-2-3’ that’s deep yet vibrant and showcases his legendary status. Next is a fellow Motor City modernizer, Jon Dixon whose musicianship and productive talent takes him from jazz to techno which he skilfully brings to ‘Mack & Bewick’. Motech Records’ founder DJ 3000 brings us the spirit of ‘Summer 1995’ as he briefly steps away from techno to give us this uplifting sun-drenched stunner. Final track ‘The Beat’ comes from Rico & Sonny, the pseudonym of Chicago based DJ duo and production team of Adam Stolz and the talented Tim Baker, recorded before his devastating and untimely passing. His music lives on and we’d like to dedicate this EP to him. The ‘epm20’ compilation which features all the tracks from the EPs plus additional cuts from a host of other artists and EPM friends will follow this autumn.

Tafaa - Random activity of the work of art, escalates an extension of accepted (unproductive) concepts of art, nature and society' is a sound editing project led by Chloé Delarue, a visual artist based in Geneva (ch) in collaboration with Adeena Mey, a curator, art critic, managing editor of the magazine Afterall (Central St Martins, London, UK) and researcher/teacher at Ecal (Lausanne, ch).

Together, they gathered sound artists Jaeho Hwang, Lafidki of the Chinabot label and the performer-composer Seth Ayyaz in a desire to bring together horizons of thoughts with a singular tonality in resonance with the Tafaa* cycle. The release is a continuation of the deployment of Chloé Delarue's solo show - Tafaa - THE Century OF THE Snitch, which took place at the Villa du Parc - Contemporary art center in Annemasse (fr).

The four compositions resulting from this meeting are materialized in a hybrid compilation. Each of the tracks, affected by the aesthetic spectrum of Tafaa - THE Century OF THE Snitch, results from unique paths that each sound artist builds in their own works. This compilation released in the exhibition space and in its vinyl form, was infused under this particular atmosphere with the aura of sodium, as an echo of the previous opus Tafaa - Acid Rave. The title evokes territories in wasteland and multitude of theaters of an urbanity that has become tropical for one night.

For Chloé Delarue, the environment produced under Tafaa - THE Century OF THE Snitch and its aesthetic feeling is linked with the dissemination of these four tracks. As she says, it becomes “like the deep trance of a noise invisible to oneself but that we perceive thanks to the questioning of its own imperception, the work no longer looks at itself, it injects itself.”

Moult and Dystopia by Jaeho Hwang, Pandæmonium Cctv by Lafidki in collaboration with Ayankoko and Pisitakun (from Chinabot) and Apophenic studies | stochastic iqaat by Seth Ayyaz thus bring out, through their sound characteristics, a powerful emotional expanse driven by their glimpse of the conceptual reconfigurations of a world increasingly accessible through its ersatz.

The vinyl title Tafaa - Random Activity (...) is borrowed from Gustav Metzger taken from an extract from his Manifesto On random activity in material / transforming works of art in July 30, 1964.

Chloé Delarue constitutes what she calls environments under the influence of the Tafaa perception system, an acronym for Toward A Fully Automated Appearance. Tafaa is a conceptual organ that she builds as a cognitive outgrowth allowing her access to the reasoning that feeds her work. It is under this name, indexed by a number or a subtitle, that each occurrence of her work has been presented since 2015. Thus, she probes the ambiguous relations that our society maintains with its multitudes of transfigurations, real or simulated, at the time of permanent interconnections and raises questions relating to changes in perceptions and cognitive transformations of our beings under the visible and invisible authority of cosmotechnics.

Perhaps the best thing about Russian electronic music godfather Alexey Devyanin's Pixelord project returning to Saturate! for this "Demonslayer" release is not simply the exciting and hard-hitting beats contained within, but the simple fact that it shall be offered on delicious, glorious Vinyl. An artifact for all time, perhaps to be found in future wastelands by those who would consider this "Demonslayer" to be the VanHelsing (or perhaps Trevor Belmont) of the 21st century bass music scene.

The last decade has seen Pixelord riding the wave of forward-thinking bass music, and always staying at the crest, and 2020 is no different. "Doomguy" comes tearing straight in with menacing, distorted synth weaponry, assaulting with ballistic beats (even some nods to Junglism) until finally bestowing some glittering melody atop the fray, showing that not only is Alexey an elder-statesman of the genre, he's still the eager bass monster that explores his own depths. The depths are again evident in "Pain Elemental" where the vibe is established immediately, and only delves deeper into the slightly-detuned bass signals and ominous creeping atmosphere. The melodic elements are no longer here to sooth, they are newly charged laser beams that sear the flesh, scorching the eardrums.

This foreboding, demon-dispatching vibe is indeed present throughout this entire release, as you enter the "Bonus Stage" of this deadly game, where the aggression does not abate, and the bass plays backseat to the synth bell sonic geometry on display. The drums especially feel the wrath of Pixelord on this track, where some impossibly tortured tambourines take a beating, and the chopping and relentless reorganization of the rhythm keeps you churning with intensity. The title track brings the "wild style", even though the drums are less frantic, the bass frequencies and laser blasts from our protagonist, the ever-ready "Demonslayer", are sure to dismantle any submissive subwoofer in range.

"bfg" rounds out this collection in a disheveled fashion, dishing out low frequency divebombs and squelches, whilst otherworldly transmissions from synth realms afar come leaping in trying to assert their dominance, only to be eaten alive by daemonic bass and telluric currents of seismic drum activity. An utterly destructive end to this tale… BUT Wait, IT Gets Worse! We have here on hand Saturate! stalwarts DJ Ride, DJ Pound, Dranq and big daddy Starkey on remix duty, who all take the tracks down their own rabbit holes to parts unknown, with equal aplomb. The result is equal in intensity and aggression, but the textures by which this is conveyed are wholly transformed and re-imagined skillfully.

Musician, poet, iconoclast, model, artist, enigma. Leslie Winer is many things.

Born to a teenage mother and sold for $10,000 in a black market adoption when she was just hours old, Winer has always lived an uncommon life. She grew up in Boston with a voracious appetite for music and the written word and embraced the city’s lively jazz and folk scene in the ‘70s. Moving to New York for art school, she gravitated towards a vibrant crowd of intellectuals, artists, and radical thinkers—or perhaps they gravitated towards her.

There, Winer formed an unlikely friendship with writer and artist William S. Burroughs and lived on-and-off with Jean-Michel Basquiat. In London, where Winer began her musical ventures in earnest, she was a regular at Leigh Bowery’s underground club Taboo, where she met many of her collaborators, including filmmaker John Maybury, Kevin Mooney (of Adam and the Ants), and Boy George, who once declared that Winer “might just be the coolest woman on the planet!”

Winer’s striking looks also attracted fashion designers and photographers. Throughout the early ‘80s, she was an in-demand model—appearing in campaigns for Valentino, Christian Dior, and Yohji Yamamoto, and serving as a muse for a young Jean-Paul Gaultier, who later dubbed Winer “the first androgynous model.” She posed for Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, and Pierre et Gilles, and graced the covers of The Face, French and Italian editions of Vogue, and Mademoiselle.

But music was Winer’s true passion and, at the turn of the ‘90s, she would unknowingly help invent the massively popular genre known today as trip-hop.

On her debut, Witch, Winer masterfully blended the uninhibited sampling of early hip-hop with dancehall basslines and programmed beats, while weaving mesmerizing—and coolly-detached—spoken-word vocals into her ambient tracks. It was unorthodox in the most delicious ways.

The album was a bold experiment by the self-taught artist, who enlisted a number of talented musicians in the sessions, including Culture Club’s Helen Terry, Karl Bonnie of Renegade Soundwave, former Public Image Ltd. bassist Jah Wobble, and Kevin Mooney, as well as Marco Pirroni and Matthew Ashman (both of Adam and the Ants, among other acts).

While Witch was finished in 1990, it wouldn’t be released for three years, due to the whims of Winer’s label. In the meantime, several tracks made their way out into the world as early as June 1990, thanks to BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, who later referred to Witch as “the definition of a hidden gem.”

Opening with the laid-back dub beats and soft, sing-songy chorus of “He Was,” Witch features such highlights as the up-tempo “Skin,” the hypnotic, bass-heavy “The Boy Who Used 2 Whistle,” and the album’s closer, “Dream 1,” in which waves of reverb-soaked vocals bounce from one ear the other.

While sonically, Winer was breaking new ground, she was also bringing a fresh, incendiary take on what it means to be a woman in the music business, as embodied by her composition “N1 Ear,” in which she delivers a scorching, feminist manifesto, borrowed from the Women’s Liberation Broadsheet: “If I get raped it must be my fault / And if get bashed I must’ve provoked it / And if I raise my voice I’m a nagging bitch / And if I like fucking I’m a whore…And if I ask my doctor too many questions I’m neurotic and need pills / Because I still can’t get a safe birth control while some fucker’s roaming the moon.”

Winer had every right to vent her frustrations as a woman in music. Despite her fierce demeanor and steadfast focus, she was consistently disregarded and typecast by the industry. Many of her early collaborators failed to credit her work, while others simply overlooked her influence. Witch, for example, was so delayed that by the time the album saw the light of day (released under the pseudonym “©”), trip-hop was gaining mainstream traction via acts like Portishead, Massive Attack, and Madonna. Although Winer eventually gained wider acknowledgment (prompting the NME to give her the dubious distinction of “The Grandmother of Trip-Hop”), Witch initially went sorely unnoticed.

Following the disappearance of Witch, Winer continued to record, undeterred by the elusive nature of mainstream success in the modern music business. Her network of inspired collaborators continued to grow and expand, yet her influence remained largely a secret except to those in the know, such as Grace Jones and Sinead O’Connor, who would cover her songs.

Today, Winer stays busy on new musical projects in the French countryside, where she has spent the past two decades raising her five daughters. A prolific writer, she has also published two collections of poetry and oversees the literary estate of Herbert Huncke, a defining member of the Beat Generation.

In the modern era, one is hard-pressed to find an artist who continues to push the creative envelope as much as Winer does. And yet, three decades after her revolutionary debut, her work remains just as startling and fresh.

Winer’s influence might best be summed by the award-winning composer Max Richter, who offered the following thoughts to Wyndham Wallace for his extensive liner notes: “The world seems finally to be catching up to Leslie Winer, whose startling intelligence and singular vision shine through her copious recording life. In Trux We Pux is an editorial project organized by the Porto based label and collective Favela Discos. Focusing on the city’s thriving experimental and improvised music scene, it sets out to portrait in a series of four volumes some of the characteristic sounds and collaborative practices that have been in development in Porto during the last few years.

In Trux We Pux 04 is the last in a series of four records organized by Favela Discos, set out to shine a light on Porto’s thriving experimental and improvised music scene. Throughout the collection the label tries to expose the eclectic sound and collaborative practices that have been in development in the last few years in the city by promoting the collaboration between artists and the creation of new collective improvisation pieces.

As the first album dwelled into the electronic spectre of the scene, this volume veers itself to the physical side of experimental and improvised explorations. Although there is space for outsiders manipulating the sound by electronic means, most of the music in this album is plucked, bowed, percussed or sung. The artists themselves are as varied as the music they played, among the 13 artists that collaborated for the creation of this album are many promising newcomers but also some of the more recognizable and relevant names in the scene, with the presence of the Sonoscopia founder Gustavo Costa, João Pais Filipe one of the most characteristic drummers in Portugal, and the DIY duo and underground staple Calhau!.

As we could suspect, the diverse selection of musicians, while providing us a view on the various kinds of musical languages that populate the city’s scene, also creates a dynamic collection of sounds. Spanning a large gamut of sub-sub-genres, from near-musique concrète to tribal noise, the album is a rollercoaster collage that miraculously achieves logic and cohesion, like a voyeur listener taking us on a journey through an abandoned mall where most of the bands in Porto rehearse, whose halls reverberate with a cacophony of music.
