I saw the magic of what a club space could sound and feel like as my Dad set up the DJ equipment at The Rallye Racquet Club. Hearing the power of those huge Altec Lansing "Voice of the Theater" Speakers and Horn-loaded JBL subwoofers fascinated me! In the late 80s, I was spoiled sonically by playing on several Richard Long Sound Systems around New York and New Jersey. This is why ever since I first ventured away from home, I have been infamous with my soundchecks at any space I have performed in. I make sure, with the help of the engineers in these “Spaces and Places”, many I have known most of my career, to get the best from each system. Each sound system is unique to each venue, even if it's the same type of gear, because of the physical space. And when you add the right audience to that specific nightclub, it comes to life! The club owners and engineers were gracious enough to let me take over each club and turn each venue, into a recording studio. I wanted to express the love of what could be possible in capturing my productions in the venue, from the heart of each space, right on the dance floor and I translate it onto this album, which I created over the course of 4 years and 24 venues later. Midwife’s Madeline Johnston has gone through several different iterations of her music project. In 2015, she moved into Denver’s premier DIY space Rhinoceropolis, where she began learning recording on her own and primarily focusing on Sister Grotto, a long-form ambient based project. Working alongside artists like Colin Ward and Dani Rev, she was inspired by her roommate’s tenacity and artistic outpouring. Madeline recorded Born to Lose / Born to Leave, Blindside, and Song For An Unborn Sun during the first half of her residency (before she started the project that would soon become Like Author, Like Daughter).

Time is a major element in this group of recordings. Tracks were played in real time, slowed down, and played on top of, repeatedly, and has been referred to as an ambient sludge record. Components like the Casio Sk-1, endless loop cassettes, delay and pitch shifters distort the passage of time - Layers, repetition, and analogue delay fold it back in on itself.

Not unlike the sentimentality and difficulty distinguishing landmark moments of this time period for Madeline, the music itself is a sort of frenetic and meditative blur.

Some of the tracks on Song For An Unborn Sun were later re-worked for the first Midwife album. Most importantly, “Song For An Unborn Sun” and “Placeholder” which became the song “Way Out.”

Song For An Unborn Sun was originally released as a split in 2016 on the small run cassette label Terrible Pleasures. Side A was by Sister Grotto, and Side B was by Devin Shaffer (who at the time was releasing music under the name Yarrow).

The Flenser 2023 reissue will solely highlight the Sister Grotto material, remastered, along with previously unreleased songs that serve as a timestamp of that particularly magic creative era.

“Placeholder (Slide Edit)” is a postcard from Madeline Johnston and Tucker Theodore’s early collaboration. “Live at Wazee Union” is a recording of a guerrilla show in a former co-op art studio in the process of being demolished and replaced. It was presented and played with the help and additional instrumentation of Braeyden Jae and H Lite’s Anton Krueger. The group created a shrine with about 50 votive candles to set the scene: a temporary refuge from the growing pains of gentrification. “esp” is a play on Song For An Unborn Sun’s closing track, “Hex,” and was made using modified tape loops and field recordings from the industrial neighborhood where Rhinoceropolis once stood.

Rua Sound's new sub-label Spheres is proud to introduce its first release from Rome-based producer Noroi. The Adrastea EP is a richly imaginative work of electronic music, showcasing Noroi's uniquely melancholic and futuristic sound.
Comprised of four tracks, the EP opens with "Stay," a powerful blending of emotive breakbeat and evocative vocals. "Untitled Jungle," a collaboration with VSC, is a genre-defying jungle track that builds to a genre-appropriate fist pumping crescendo. "Chrysalis" is on a more introspective tip, where delicate layers of reverb-drenched instrumentation and the transcendent vocal delivery of Tokyo Witch creates a restorative atmosphere. The EP concludes with "Transoceanic," an energetic piece that blends percussion and atmospherics for a sound that can't be defined.
The Adrastea EP shows off Noroi's flare for innovative sound design, offering a vision of the future of electronic music. Out on March 3rd on the Rua Sound Bandcamp and in online and physical stores worldwide, it is a must-listen for fans of the deep, adventurous tracks that work in your headphones as well as on the emotional end of the club sets.
This is the first in a series of releases from the Spheres label, which named after one of Jupiter's moons. Each one features original artwork by Josje Bijl aka Yorobi, inspired by the sketches of these moons by Galileo in 1610.

Alvars Orkester was formed in 1987 in Johannishus, a small village in the south-east of Sweden by a group of young boys interested in the mysteries of psychic sickness, mental institutions, industrial music culture and the power of sound. For the first very creative years, Alvars was very active within the independent cassette culture scene releasing their stuff (that quite soon drifted from the industrialism inspired by Test Dept, TG, SPK and z'ev to an atmospheric, psychedelic and quite ambient version of noise) on small labels in Italy, Portugal, USA etc.
Joachim Nordwall writes: "1990-1991. In the middle of all teen confusion going on, me and Zwarre had a long creative time together. Recording every weekend, connecting with like-minded (or at least we thought so) people around the world and trading tapes with whoever. Our world was analogue synths, Party Zone late Friday nights on MTV, zines and out-there experimental music. By then, we had a few tapes out and had "Nobody Finds Nothing" being released on the Italian super-label (in our opinion) Biotope Art Organization. We were in the midst of something and recorded "Nuthull" for another Italian top level label called Old Europa Café. However, they did not like it and the tape was abandoned and forgotten. Boogie Angst is proud to present the first EP by newly found duo Marcel Vogel & Lyma.

Games Change is a collection of songs written about the wonders of childbirth, and how this can affect the relationship that made the child happen in the first place. Drenched in a healthy serving of Soul and Funk, Games Change is the groovy parent's anthem, and perhaps a roadmap for those about to become one. Sometimes the themes are wrapped in innuendo, but often times they pronounce it blatantly inyour- face.

Having released two stellar singles prior to this full EP offering, Marcel Vogel and Lyma have quickly sparked interest in the appropriate corners of the music world, with their already signature brand of genre-mashing greatness.

DJ'ing across the globe, remixing the likes of Hot Chip, Phenomenal Handclap Band and Flamingo Pier, or A&R'ing releases on his own record label Lumberjacks In Hell, Marcel Vogel is the good vibe guru. Fueled by the dance floor connection, Marcel offers up an eclectic blend of Disco, Soul, House and Gospel. Amsterdam-based Lyma is an RnB and Soul powerhouse. Also, part of the Likeminds ensemble, Lyma skirts the genre borders with his eclectic mix of moveable goodness.

The EP opener Funk Money launches the manifesto with an expensive, forward-moving groove. Exuberant synth stabs bounce off highly static Electro-like leads—moving it into prime-time, drive-time radio territory. After opening up in exceptional fashion, we find the sexual breakout single Head Back In The Game. An enticing mid-tempo'd bounce lures us in, right before a vocal delivery reminiscent of a plethora of 70s Soul crooners seals the deal. Syrupy chordal movements guide us through several swanky passages describing the willingness of sexual resurgence and a desire for a sexual return to form, so to say. Next we find the previously released Keep On Stepping. On this, a luxuriously syncopated and heavily saturated bass line lays underneath a washed out vocal cut. After which, a guitar riff reminiscent of early Prince makes friends with a rather ambiguous synth stab. All whilst the hypnotic analog hi-hat pattern fills in the blanks. The second part of the song introduces some interesting Acid House inspired elements, but firmly planting them in their own world. On Cruisin' we find a hypnotic, almost sample-esque motif, over which the tasteful Acid House reference rears its head again. Round, but sharp in message, Cruisin' is a metaphor for taking the best feeling directions in life. Pop My Cherry drops all the innuendo and gets straight to the point; sexual prowess front and center. The Teddy Rileyesque closing tune is a perfect summary of the EPs mission statement, in that the duo holds no holes barred.

Overall, Games Change is ferociously lustful, sexually charged and smooth-as-butter. It just knows how to twist, bop, wine and dine us into loving Marcel Vogel & Lyma even more—even though they didn't get much sleep last night.

Annie Hall returns to Sheffield's Central Processing Unit label with an EP entitledMemories That Never Happened. This record represents the producer's third time on CPU after 2016'sTenured Positionsand 2020'sFum, and it is also the latest release in a busy couple of years for Annie Hall which have also seen her drop EPs on 20:20 Vision, Orson Records and Random Island. The momentum Annie Hall has built up in recent times carries through to a dynamic collection of productions which bring enough heft in the beats to keep the dancefloor happy while also including all manner of details in the production.
Memories That Never Happenedbegins with the title-track, a twitchy yet wistful cut which perfectly matches its name. There's bite to the broken-beat electro pulse, growling bass and robotic declamations of "it's Annie", but the makeup of the track is simultaneously rather rose-tinted, particularly when some chemtrails of a synth lead enter later on. The overall effect is as thoughtful as it is stimulating, akin to the halcyon productions of Daniel Avery.
If 'Memories That Never Happened' is somewhat plaintive, following jam 'Problematic Tape Recorder' has the bit between its teeth from the get-go. The beat crashes and snaps, and when played off shimmering stabs of synth it all adds up to aWip3outrush that nods to both the old Rephlex Records sound as well as contemporary practitioners like Nightwave. Once again the synth lead is used lightly here, more an augmentation to the beat than the centrepiece - another demonstration of Annie Hall's ability to write with focus even when the overall intent is to move bodies in the club.
The energy of 'Problematic Tape Recorder' is spun in an unusual direction on 'Subsequent Experiments', the first track ofMemories That Never Happened's B-side. This cut may be the quickest on the record, but this does not mean it shouts the loudest. Indeed, 'Subsequent Experiments' may be the most ornate production here, full of shadowy sonics and a deconstructed beat running at D&B speed. A kind of shadowrealm version of Planet Mu's early drill & bass explorations crossed with UVB-76's darkside post-Metalheadz excursions, this one is an eerie thrill.
After the busy 'Subsequent Experiments', Annie Hall slows down to take the EP's home straight at mid-tempo. On 'Unparalleled Comfort', keyboard stabs slide over a rhythm that's at once driving enough for the dancefloor and nuanced enough to allow little half-melodies of synth to flit around above. It's a fitting closer for this EP, almost playing like an amalgamation of the elements which made the rest ofMemories That Never Happenedso appealing.
Annie Hall returns to Central Processing Unit withMemories That Never Happened, an EP of masterful productions which will delight both clubbers and home-listeners.

Denver producer and visual artist John T. Hastings aka Rumtum returns to Bastard Jazz for his second album on the label, "Arcadian Daze". The album is a contemplative drive down a nostalgic highway, reflecting on a period of his late adolescence growing up in Ohio, spending time at Arcadia Beach on Lake Erie and discovering the likes DJ Shadow, Madlib, Fila Brazilla, early Four Tet, the original Ninja Tune roster and more. Revisiting these coming of age memories, John purchased an older MPC 2000xl and set out to musically capture the excitement of putting his first nascent loops together, inspired by this pivotal era of electronic music that has since birthed movements like such as Lo-Fi/Chillhop, Vaporwave, LA's mid-2000s Beat Scene / Low End Theory, etc.

The end result of "Arcadian Daze" is indeed filled with that nostalgic spirit paying homage to those aforementioned sounds, but also presents a forward thinking musical palate that's very much grounded in Rumtum's sensibilities as a producer and time spent learning to program new & vintage outboard gear. The album moves away from the warm, dreamy sounds of last year's "Isles in Indigo" LP, and touches more into a mystical, pensive vibe with elements of darkness and light.

It’s furious, intense and relentless - and the brass breakdown acts as the tabasco sauce. Drink water. Plenty of water.

Closing Vol. 4 out on B2 is Groovemasta with ‘That Funk’. A track that treats its funky beats and chunky bass like royalty, this 118bpm monster wastes no time in demanding ‘Gimme that funk’. And you’re gonna hand it over. The swirling, gyrating sexiness of ‘That Funk’ can’t be understated - impossible not to lose yourself in this guaranteed dance floor time bomb.

Sought after remixes of one of the North West’s favourite old skool anthems Sarasota ‘We’re Gettin’ Hot’. This limited edition Color Vinyl EP split across two parts includes Sarasota’s 25th anniversary mix and edit on the uplifting house tip, the original 1996 mix that doubles down on the old skool style piano vibe, plus the Da Fool 1999 remix which uses the same bell sound, although a different melody, as ‘Meet Him At The Blue Oyster Bar’ to maximum effect. B.I.T. Productions was set up in 1995, kicking off with a bang by releasing the white label monster, The Crowdpleasers ‘I Want You To Know’ which sampled Quench ‘Dreams’. Over the next 5 years, the label produced tracks of varying styles: Da Fool ‘Meet Him At The Blue Oyster Bar’ (licenced to Ffrr), quintessential ‘A Day To Remember’, 2 Smashing Blokes ‘M.F.’ etc, receiving DJ support from the likes of Pete Tong, Graham Gold, Stu Allan, Rob Tissera, Colin Tevendale, James Bradley, Steve Lawler, Lisa Pin-Up, Andy Farley, Lisa Lashes etc. After a 20-year hiatus, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the B.I.T. Productions first release in 1995, mid 2020 saw the production team get back in the studio and create five new mixes to go along with three previous mixes for one of the North West’s favourite old skool tracks, Sarasota ‘We’re Gettin’ Hot’.

Complete with a refined deep house sound, this is an expertly crafted body of silky smooth grooves to get floors shaking. 'Down With Us' instantly displays Cassetta’s effortless ability to create a hot house swing using just a handful of elements – subtle groove, skittish percussion and a sultry vocal sample. The whole track is thrown out wide in the breakdown, but then as the bassline is brought back in, Cassetta draws it all back in close for an intimate dancefloor moment. Definitely one of those hands-in-the-air peak-time scenes. Dreamy synth pads steadily build under a thunderous kick drum pattern on the EP’s second track, 'Focals Finest', which takes the tempo up a notch for a real sweat inducer. Finally, it’s all about a raw bassline on the metallic and techy 'Jupiter Groove'. Contorted slices of spoken word dip in and out throughout to create another level of leftfield, danceable percussion. While the low end is the main focus on the original, in Silat Beksi’s remix, we hear a brighter take on the deep groove. There’s a swirling sample, more prominent key stabs, eerie vocals and a teasing smattering of melody. Percussive elements are thrown from all angles, and they pulsate up into the rafters of the lofty house track, leading you further into a state of hypnosis. Overall, these are house tracks made right – a classy release fit for warming in crowds in style.

In 2021 Velocity Press published Who Say Reload: The Stories Behind the Classic Drum & Bass Records of the 90s, an oral history of the records that defined jungle/drum & bass straight from the original sources. The deluxe coffee table book has since sold thousands of copies and prompted many to comment that it should have an accompanying soundtrack.

Now author Paul Terzulli has compiled a Who Say Reload album. However, where the book focused solely on classics and anthems, the compilation takes a different route and offers up a selection of top-quality tunes from some of the scene’s most respected artists and labels.

Like the book, the album covers the genre’s nineties golden era, and the many styles of D&B are represented. Pioneering producers and crowd-pleasing favourites sit alongside a few sought-after obscurities by the unsung heroes of the scene. Most importantly, there are some absolute bangers!

The 16 tracks are spread over two volumes of 2 x 12"s, and there is also a 13-track digital version, taking you on a journey through music forged from raw breakbeats and basslines that soundtracked a culture of all-night raves, specialist record shops and pirate radio stations.

Jungle/drum & bass is approaching its 30th anniversary. Its sonic and cultural legacy is still being felt today. There’s still plenty of old music that might be “new” to some, and these tunes still pack as much of a punch as they did back in the day. That unique energy generated by a combination of breakbeats, bass and creativity never gets old.

Kasra V’s Hyperdelic EP, his first release on Radiant Records, showcases the producer’s attentive ear for textural and rhythmic play. His last EP from 2018, Akasa, was a collection of dreamy, break-driven pieces, and a more ambient collaboration with Dopplereffekt; timbre and meticulously tuned sonics were also in focus then, but we now hear a reduction of form, and with it, a saturation of style. “Voice note to self” kicks off the EP with a boom-bap drum loop. The rhythm continues as percussive elements are added and removed, adhering to the groove and its growing complexity. A warm bassline chugs along, pitched vocals mumble into the static, and an ascendant pad begins to give the track a gorgeous depth: a horizon. Following is a remix of the same track by Byron B. Yeates and Roza Terenzi, adapting certain samples from Kasra V’s production and looping them up to a brisk 142 BPM. As can be expected from these two, the kick’s punchy 4/4 structure is buttressed by crisp percussion and clever, unexpected rhythms. On the B-side, “Vesper” takes us back to downtempo. Bumping on at around 80 BPM, Kasra V builds upon a drum-machine loop with processed percussion samples: a snare-roll one could hear in a jungle track, chopped claps panning across the break, and so on. And the slow, warm gurgle of an 808 comes in just at the point of fracture, holding it all together. “Night Prime” extends the EP’s principle of a drum loop serving as the skeleton – with greater drama, somehow. Like in “Voice note to self”, we hear vocal samples, but here they swerve in and out of clarity; we break into unexpected moments of silence, and the loop restarts; 3 minutes in, a huge, minor piano chord breaks upon the track like dusk. “Warm up great” closes the EP with the blend of left-field groove and dissonance one might associate with Future Sound of London or early work of The Chemical Brothers. The textures and tunings of each sample are so dense, so delicious, Kasra V lets us savour them for the last 20 seconds of the EP, lost in the reverb of a singly struck piano key

On behalf of re:discovery records, it is with great excitement that we announce the 3rd and last EP of the set highlighting the music of 1990's Norwegian electronic act Neural Network. Part 3 hones in on their unreleased album that was never formely named. The band and those in the industry who heard it felt it was their best music yet. There were label suitors for this album including a top tier Belgian label but sadly things did not work out as that label folded. And this project was left on DAT's.

Of the 9 tracks we chose, there were 4 we felt would most fit the vinyl medium and the theme of the first 2 EP's. These fit in with music like B12, Stasis and As One for some lofty comparisons and we think it fit's perfectly in that esteem company. The Detroit-esque beautifully somber 'Lambent' sounds almost 'Tedra' like from Kenny Larkin. 'Jetstream' is pure melodic robotic funk from the future. The side B track 'Floatation' coming in at just over 18 minutes and is a prime example of the sci-fi music they so wonderfully produced. This 3 record series is a great example of re:discovery records' mission to present the past for the future. All feature amazing artwork from UK's Grid Pattern complete with insert that features info on the music and their history. Bring back the Chill Out Rooms!

Masters At Work dig into the archives and find Gems. Having their 2 Inchmaster tapes (over 750 tapes) stored for over 25 years, Kenny and Louie pulled the tapes out and had them transferred to digital files. In their findings on each 2 inch there were 2-3 tracks on each tape never heard before.

They’ve taken those tracks and mixed them to perfection, but leaving the rawness of the original feel and recordings made over 25 - 30 years ago. “Pour les gens supercool.” This slick tagline caused a commotion among Belgian electronic music fans in 1985 as a jingle in Liaisons Dangereuses, the infamous radio show on local station S.I.S. Antwerpen. Hosted by Paul Ward and DJ Sven Van Hees and playing an exhilarating mix of EBM, house, new beat, acid house, Detroit techno, synthpop and more, the transmit was without a doubt trendsetting, presenting music on the radio that before was only to be witnessed in dark clubs or underground record stores. Listeners needed to make an effort though, since the S.I.S. waves only reached about 10km out of the city center. But a network of copied tape recordings and a fast growing bunch of fans - some of which even driving their cars to parking lots inside the broadcast area to hear the show - created a buzz that would easily exceed the limits of the transmission signal.

In 1989 Ward and Van Hees formed their own band named after the radio show, but to avoid confusion with the eponymous German new wave band, they signed their records with Liaison D or Liaisons D. Assisted by Jan Van Den Bergh (Mappa Mundi, Kumulus, Buzz), Marcos Salon (Outlander), Frank De Wulf (B-Sides, World Party II) and J.P. Ruelle, Liaisons D released a solid string of EP’s and the album “Submerged In Sound” on USA Import Records between 1989 and 1992. We are extremely proud to present four tracks from the album here as a brand new EP, a must-have for fans of their unapologetically rough and ravy sound, testimony of a unique era in Belgium’s electronic music history.

From a lifetime dedicated to the craft of jungle and breakbeat culture, Yorobi steps up on Sneaker Social Club to deliver her first solo EP. Her prior outing on wax alongside Tim Reaper in 2020 built on years immersed in the scene as a DJ, from her first moves on pirate radio and at underground dances in Amsterdam through to her frequent presence at vital dances like Rupture. She’s worked with the likes of Sun People and dropped heat on labels such as Repertoire, Planet Wax, Parallax and Exit, but now is the time for her to present the full scope of her creative vision across five expansive forays into inventive D&B abstractions, mutant electro and inverted ambient soundscapes.

There are familiar threads detectable in melodic brushstrokes or sharply angled drum edits on these tunes, perhaps calling to mind the most innovative corners of the Logical Progression compilations, a splash of braindance here or a hidden corner of a Photek LP there, but such impressions are juxtaposed with idiosyncratic swerves which make Yorobi’s work entirely her own. Drawing on intensely personal themes through her own rendition of the traditional spiritual ‘Motherless Child’ and indulging her own tangential experiments deconstructing 80s dancehall, reflecting on the limitations of psychology and channeling her inner Aphex, Yorobi runs at the extended play format with an unbound energy which makes for some of the most effervescent, inventive rollers we’ve heard in a long time. If you thought everything that needed to be said in drum & bass had been already expressed through decades of drops, think again.

Noisia's uncompromising approach to dance music has never been more keenly felt. While they're turning out remixes for commercial acts such as Katy Perry and Deadmau5 that sound just as filthy as any usual Noisia production, the Dutch trio are also sticking to their D&B roots with releases on their own Vision imprint.

For Vision's latest release label bosses Noisia team up with long-term collaborators, Phace, to whip up 'Program'. As you'd expect from one of their collabs, this one is hard and heavy complete with an intense breakdown reminiscent of Wolfgang Gartner's 'Undertaker'. Winding bass notes finish the job and rib-crushing subs will have the dancefloor churning every time this drops.
