On this second delivery of Uruguayan Sound, Mephis presents us with two like-minded producers with a love for machines and their sound.

Sheffield-based Denham Audio make their Lobster Theremin debut with an incredible 5 tracker of breaks and bass, backed with a club-fuelled remix from Maruwa.

EP opener 'Feel The Panic' sets the pace, crunchy drums with scorching acid basslines and old rave esque vocal hooks, merging into a dancefloor driven weapon. 'Volt' injects a punch, chopped up drum sequences with floating vocals and pulsating synth lines, one for the early hours of the dance.

On the flip side Denham Audio leads with a drum driven roller 'Bobby Wobbler', breaks and beats soar and transform into a weighty number.

'Check 1' blends classic rave esque sound pallets with punchy kick drums and clean, crisp synth lines. For those in the know, Brian Kage's chops as a producer and studio wizard are well established. The artist has released on Omar S' Fxhe, Carl Craigs' Planet-E, Steve Bug’s PokerFlat, Rob Modell’s Echospace, his own labels Beretta Music and Michigander, and other imprints, helped launch the careers of internationally respected DJs and producers like Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson, and Luke Hess, and mix, mastered, and engineered for Ataxia, John F.M., OB Ignitt, Monty Luke, and more. Lauded for a sound that is rooted, yet forever forward in its approach, his most recent work, 909 Nights EP, is no exception. The title track reintroduces a winning team with Taho and Kage combining forces again. The release gets off the starting line with a booming kick, that signature drum sound of acid house's most infamous rhythm machine. Syncopated closed hats and cymbal crashes rush in before their crunchy snare and clap companions join in. Pitch bending open hats introduce track progressions like earth shattering orchestral stabs and rich, uplifting piano notes underwritten by deep chords and a fat bass line while short, squelchy, guitar-like licks dance below. As atmospheric as it is bumping, a synthetic flute playfully flutters into the mix, elevated by airy strings and a French filtered elastic brass solo lead. A touch of acid completes this journey through sound. Listeners would be forgiven for thinking they reopened Club Zanzibar in Detroit and this was its anthem. Shifting gears, "Warehouse Vibes" flares up next with phased effects and a filtered kick driving the track along a conveyor belt towards an all-enveloping dubby techno bliss. Pressure steadily builds up before being released in the form of steam flowing from creaky, rusted pipes. While the sonic palette delivers on its promise, this is no ordinary warehouse we've entered the gates into; it's breaking in through the shattered window of an abandoned industrial manufacturing facility territory instead. Perhaps a little fuzzy after the previous beatdown, "jax" is an intentionally full-body workout as the fist-pumping grip of the preceding cut gives way to hip-thrusting, put-your-back-in-it dancing action. Jacking drums lend the track a hefty bounce while the vocals really hammer the point home, in case there was somehow any confusion left as to what to do with this one. An impressing flex, partygoers are guaranteed to be going home seeing gains after each play. The Motor City may make less cars these days, but Brian Kage is an integral component of artists under the 313 emblem ensuring there's no shortage of newer model Detroit house and techno productions that are reliable and well worth the ride.

Roger Robinson (King Midas Sound, Black Space Quartet) delivers 2 standalone sides of haunted soul over instrumentals from Jabu’s Amos Childs. Described by Roger as an imaginary soundtrack to a long escalator ride downwards to a Hiroshi Sugimoto exhibition - ‘the music that might be playing as you tried your best to avoid everyone else’s eyes’. Taking his cue from seminal mix albums of days gone by, Glenn Astro is back with a compilation of original productions from a cast of fictional artists on Nothing Is Real. Across 13 tracks, the Tartelet mainstay celebrates the thrill of discovery which came as standard listening to new entries in series’ like X-Mix and DJ Kicks, moving between head-nodding downtempo, ambient techno, broken beat and all manner of chill-out room delights. You might be left wishing artists such as DJ 1999, Mental Trance and Eye Soul8r had actual discographies to go and explore, but as Astro himself is keen to point out, “nothing is real.”

Astro has never been shy to embrace classic tropes and tones in his past albums for Tartelet, Apollo and Ninja Tune, but he’s drawing on a different set of influences for this album and embracing the flexibility afforded by using imagined aliases for varied production styles.

“I had the idea to do a mixtape, preferably with unknown dance tracks that also reflect that whole 90s/early 00s vibe,” Astro explains. “Instead of digging for some records that haven’t been sourced yet or trying to find those ‘forgotten’ treasures, I made the tracks myself. That way I had full control over BPMs, feel and the whole arrangement of tracks. I thought of a few alter egos and started producing the tracks in the order that I intended to play them in a mix. In the end a whole compilation of tracks emerged.”

While the concept might suggest you’re going to hear a lot of over- familiar sounds, don’t be fooled. Astro is inspired and inquisitive, channeling the experimental spirit of the 90s and early 00s when electronic music was still continually being redefined in all kinds of micro-scenes. In many cases, Astro’s productions slip into the cracks between genres rather than specifically mimicking a style.

Even if the reference points are detectable, the end result is a curious blend as indebted to ambiguity as the overall concept of the compilation. Like the spine-tingling sensation of hitting play and awaiting the waves of unknown sonics on one of those seminal mixes, you never know exactly what you’re going to get as you take the trip through Nothing Is Real.

Next up in our 7” vinyl series, Honey C aka the late great Philippe Van Mullem and Bonzai stalwart Philippe Toutlemonde, delight with two seminal vocal trance tracks – Stop (The Disease) and Desire. Housed on light blue colour 7” vinyl, both tracks were first released in 1993 on the Houze Factory imprint before Stop (The Disease) was snapped up on the legendary Bonzai Trance Progressive in 1997 with a raft of remixes in tow. Desire would make an appearance on Bonzai Classics Digital in 2007, cementing its status as a retro gem. The 2 Philippe's were pioneers of that vocal trance sound and their project Quadran gave rise to the vocal melodic trance scene which still resonates to this day. Between them they notched up quite a few cuts with aliases and groups such as Innertales, Extreme Trax, Oudja and The Gaps among their repertoire. The A side features the original mix of Stop (The Disease) which intros with a classic build up and explosion before an eerie, almost cinematic sequence takes over. The melodies soon become prevalent as a tight drum section keeps the rhythm flowing. A pulsing bassline holds the track together beautifully as that infectious vocal takes over the groove. On the flip side the Club Mix of Desire resides, taking us into an energy driven experience that sends the nostalgia juices flowing. Classic gated synths stand out as a powerful bassline drives the groove. The vocal is catchy and inviting, striking a perfect balance in the groove. 2 solid cuts for the collectors of fine beats.

The pandemic has affected people in all sorts of different ways, but for FJAAK, life in
lockdown led to one key realization: nothing in life is permanent, and what you do have can
disappear at any moment, no matter how solid it may appear. That idea is at the core of the
Berlin duo’s new EP, Your Time Is Ov3r, a four-track effort that sits somewhere between a
rallying cry and a desperate primal scream. It’s not a coincidence that the record’s jagged,
electro-flavored title track contains an ominous vocal refrain (“Hypnotize me”), born out of a
time when FJAAK were looking for something, anything to make the days go by more quickly.
Still, there’s more to Your Time Is Ov3r than emotional strife. The tracks here have been
primed for the dancefloor, and are easily some of FJAAK’s sharpest productions to date.
Unbridled EP opener “Identity” fuses elements of ’90s rave techno with modern electro, the
whole thing powered by the song’s menacingly crunchy bassline. “Chunks” drops the hammer
even harder, its heavy kick and low-end growl rumbling along like a vintage muscle car. And
for those seeking something a bit more chaotic, the blaring sirens and frenzied breakbeats of
“Falcon Punch” come off like the club equivalent of a nuclear sub attack. Throughout Your
Time Is Ov3r, FJAAK tiptoe right on the edge of completely losing control, and while their
skilled hands prevent things from ever veering off the road and into a ditch, the music’s
inherent sense of instability is undeniably exhilarating.

A dance music journeyman with over 70 releases and a quality imprint Footwork Audio to his name, Jay Lumen’s solo debut EP on Adam Beyer’s label is richly deserved. The artist has been in standout form recently, most notably contributing ‘Galactic Rainbow’ to A-Sides Vol.10, one of the highlights of the compilation. We got our first taste of Lumen on Drumcode way back in 2012 when he teamed with Gary Beck for the rhythmic gem ‘Lotus’. Nine years on, his next EP offering doesn’t disappoint.

‘Returning’ is marked by crushing drumlines and shuffling beats, before gradually building into an emotional chord driven cut that looks hopefully towards the future. ‘Mind’ contrasts this perfectly, a loopy monster that rolls for days, evoking a distinct old skool spirit.

Speaking about the title track, Lumen explains: “I wrote ‘Returning’ when I was in a period of really missing techno and the party community. The physical contact with people at events, as well as on the streets and at venues before the shows. Hugs and interactions. I can already imagine playing this at the first open air after lockdown as the sun sets. This track is about the reunion and happiness we’re all going to share.”

With a pair of EPs and numerous contributions to the coveted A-Sides compilation under his belt since his debut in 2018, Veerus has established himself as a talented go-to producer for Adam Beyer; from his stirring cut ‘Hypnosis’ that highlighted the Drumcode founder’s Cercle performance, to the killer ‘System’ that provided an early 2020 moment for the label. ‘Recovery’ continues the Italian’s talent for crafting powerful melody-led techno projections. The title track is an ace. What begins as a smoky atmospheric cut is quicky elevated to beast status as intergalactic robot stabs shatter the mist, while an acid-underbelly adds to the mood. ‘Dysfunction’ brims with a distinct 90s synth aesthetic, propelled by a crisp and classy bottom end.

Prague based FM Label connects music, fashion and design. Established in 2020 by Uncalled 4, the label joins the flourishing scene of Prague with a vision of music in which the new revisits the old. The second release, Enough, comes from our very own Detente 2020 - the killer combo of Uncalled 4 and his studio partner and close friend, Universe Of Everything. Featuring NYC hip hop legend Afu-Ra and Charlie One on the vocals, the eponymous track Enough combines iconic 90's street rap with contemporary electronic sounds, presenting a scenic layer that provides a movie-like feeling. The EP also features the Czech Filharmony drummer Jakub Tengler, who jammed buckets, pots, pipes and any other unusual object at his reach to create the heavily percussive Bucket Tube. Norway's Fett Burger takes Bucket Tube on a ride through NYC with his 'Work Out' remix, providing the ever-astonishing impression of walking around the streets of the Big Apple. Olsvang?r remix of Enough is designed to smash the dancefloor. Heavily influenced by both the past and the present, his rework shifts between intelligence and sheer rawness. As a final touch, the release is accompanied by an acapella track that will also be found on future FM label releases. Enough EP comes in a special cardboard sleeve which can be reshaped into a vinyl display holder.

Drumcode heavyweights Pig&Dan and Victor Ruiz link for their maiden collaborative EP. The project begun in the first quarter of the year when the artists were still touring and was later completed during a series of productive sessions after lockdown Pig&Dan members Dan Duncan and Igor Tchkotoua experiencing a creative synergy with close friend Victor Ruiz that injected some lightness into an otherwise challenging time for the trio of producers. ‘Consciousness’ is driven by a catch low-end riff that’s powerful and funky in equal measures and is a particular favourite of Adam Beyer’s, highlighting the boss’ Drumcode Indoors II and Tomorrowland’s United Through Music stream. ‘Music Takes You’ is a delicious low-end roller driven by a punchy synth workout that drops down into a captivating vocal break made for big moments. ‘Paradise Lost’ is a widescreen melodic gem, comprised of a laser-kissed synth hook, crisp percussion, and a clever low-end chord progression, giving it a classy timeless appeal.

Christian Smith returns for his first solo release on Drumcode since 2016, re-contextualising a classic vocal work. The Sweden-born journeyman has been friends with Adam Beyer since dot one. In the rare instances he has released outside his own label Tronic, Drumcode has received the fruits of his studio labour. Besides the recent contribution to this year’s A-Sides Vol.9 compilation, we haven’t seen a stand-alone Drumcode release from Smith in four years, when his excellent ‘Force Majeure’ stood as one of the year’s label highlights. ‘Your Lovin’ is his fifth release on DC, taking inspiration from a ‘90s D&B classic. Driven by a Minimoog bassline and hypnotic arpeggios, Smith, a renowned perfectionist, made six versions before settling on the final cuts. The original is stripped back and searing, perfect for late night moments as restrained vocal grabs add colour to the techno palette. The ‘Ombi Dub’ is a straight-up propulsive tool that hits you straight between the eyes.

Following the stellar trip through Woo’s Arcturian Corridor, Quindi Records continues to explore intimate, inviting sounds with an experimental bent by facilitating the return of overlooked Italian duo Cabaret du Ciel. Initially formed in 1986, Cabaret du Ciel’s debut album Skies In The Mirror was a low-key and extremely rare cassette release of spellbinding electro-acoustic ambient music created by Gian Luigi Morosin and Andrea Desiderà. A reissue on Hybride Sentimento in 2018 brought renewed attention to the startling music contained within this unique project. The Breath Of Infinity is an album comprised of new works recorded over the past year, either as new pieces or reworked from old ideas with the assistance of Giorgio Ricci.
