A heady cocktail of UK Bass in its most sinister form and a heavy dose of the more off-kilter and forward-thinking sounds coming out of not just Bristol but the UK as a whole. The mighty Visionquest label returns to celebrate 10 outstanding years in the game with a fantastic offering of new music! The EP is the first various artist EP in a series of 3, with each 12″ featuring unique artwork by Christopher Mohn, formerly of Dance Spirit. Ryan Crosson and Francesco Tristano kick things of with the beautiful, up-tempo jam, “Kerosene Years”. It’s full of crisp, bright percussion and synths that oscillate between bouncy and dreamy Detroit to Berlin vibes. Arpeggiators that at times resemble steel drums dance around leading into beautiful piano chords and rhythmic riffs. The energy is high and full of class. Lee Curtiss rolls in with his inimitable sound on “The Dogma Ate My Homework”. A bad boy bassline provides a floor bookended by his late night vocals and a synth filled bridge showcasing his sublime melodic side before slapping back to focus on the bass. The kick is big, the drums are sharp and it’s primed to crush a dancefloor. Shaun Reeves and Seth Troxler start the B side with “For the Ages”. The listener is immediately dropped into a cosmic world of space age keys and twisting vocals. The drums are patient and forward moving, providing a bed for drenched vocals both spoken and sung. All the while we hear sounds that resemble shooting stars and comets gliding through space and time. The EP finishes with “Laverne’s Day Off” by Laverne Radix aka Maayan Nidam. No time is wasted getting right into a bumping bass and dope vocal loops, cool synths and guitar lines. Different elements of the percussion start and stop to build tension and release sections perfectly before we drop right back into vocal chops that dance with a playful attitude. It’s a fantastic offering from the label heads with their close friends and surely a great intro to what will be a stellar series to celebrate 10 years of this genre defining imprint!

Bare Bones Wax presents release number two on their vinyl only label, this time enlisting an artist who is making waves on the scene, Carlo Gambino. Some of Carlo’s previous vinyl outings have been on established labels such as Cinthie’s We R House, Okain’s Ball Park, Frank Roger’s Real Tone and Ewax Editions while gaining support from heavyweight DJ’s such as Raresh, Silverlining and Matt Tolfrey, amongst many others. With future wax releases slated for labels One of 4, Discotech, 3AM, Echoes of Glory and Audio Analysts over the coming year, you could say he is a man in demand! Here he supplies two original tracks with a remix of each from Goshawk and David Moran respectively. Kicking off the EP is the first original track from Carlo titled “You and Me”. A modern deep feel and catchy vocal make this track a real killer. Goshawk (Half of deep house legends Rhythm Plate) serves up a tough underground remix of “You and Me” with an American influence for the A2 track. Over on the flip Carlo’s second original composition is “Get Back”. Sitting firmly in the deep house camp but with minimal elements and cut up vocals it purveys a killer groove. Jdotbalance is a Chicanx producer from Texas currently based in Chicago. They run the Gud4u newsletter, party and mix series and have been featured for mixes on Daisychain, Bizaar Bazaar, Papi Juice, Jerome, Rumors, and NEW World Dysorder. Here they are with a backboard smashing vinyl debut dunk full of a futuristic mix of sexy, raucous club and fast techno propulsions that showcases just how varied the energy palette of North American club music is.

“Let’s” opens up the A side with a fast techno kick and panned static flickers. Wonky pings wander left and right. This track is a true traveler…start to finish this will have the dancefloor wishing this condensed fantasy epic, inexhaustibly traversing moods and instruments, would swallow up the club and continue the stomping ride down down down the devil’s gut. A2 has a different boom but the same amount of bump. Claps dance around the 2s and 4s, showing you how to move to Jdot’s vision of gyrating, high-energy club music. A vocal sample swells like a siren. The kick moves in triplets. The peak is psycho. The track comes down just in time to pick its energy back up with big bass melodies that take it to a sonar underwater close.

Flip to the B side. “Wilin’” brings the club kicks and undulating melody that floats on top together in rhythm. Interesting rhythmic changes make you rethink your body. One can hear shimmers of the UK wobbling in to snuggle up with the ever-evolving contemporary US club landscape. “Whippit” closes out the whole shabang with a spinning, up-tempo jaunt that packs a dense punch, all bringing home the point that Jdotbalance is not messing around. In 2020, a year shaped by stringent Covid-19 restrictions, many of us paused for thought about our collective futures. For First Light Records, this reflection, plus the support of Sound and Music's Composer-Curator programme, led to the development of Unbuilt Sound, a new series of commissions centred around acoustic ecology; the relationship between listener and environment. The first iteration of the Unbuilt Sound series sees Flora Yin-Wong retreat to an isolated cabin outside Machynlleth, North Wales, to collect the field recordings that provide the basis for her folklore-inspired album, The Sacrifice.
A collage of twisted field recordings, rich waves of synth, and whispered vocals, The Sacrifice oscillates between gentle familiarity and dreamlike distortions, inspiring a folkloric sense of place that extends across time. Softly dissonant drones envelop the sounds of rocks underfoot and rippling pools, a continuous call and response between artist and landscape. These themes are perhaps best captured on 'Willow Bends', which features spoken word written and performed by Berlin's Rachel Lyn. "Ride," she says, "these ancient and contemporary currents, carrying their secrets from up-stream. Wanderwaves, when pebbles skip across the ripples, I reflect upon it, this water mirror..."

Dance floor tool release by supposedly star-on-the-rise disc jockey – DJ Rambo. We have no idea who this person is, but one could guess this is one way to find out. Some rather heated opinions on the track list, but politics apart, A1 features a downtempo chugger yet unconventionally dubbed out version of what sounds like an early German Euro House production. A2 shifts gears with Italo tinted sexy house beats. On the flip side 90's Merengue sounds with ravey samples and dubbed out soap opera esque vocals. Lastly, a climatic commentator recording of what seems to be a football match between Brazil and Argentina.

For a prolific artist as Gerardo Frisina, almost two years without a new release from him seems like an eternity: this brand new 12" EP entitled 'Soul Drum' breaks the silence, giving us three new works composed by Gerardo, made up of four recordings if we consider the two versions of the title track.

This EP anticipates the full album already in the works, scheduled for release at the end of 2022.

Without losing his Latin trademark, Gerardo continues his research into hypnotic and pulsating rhythmic patterns in both acoustic and electronic form, which are now a fundamental stylistic element of his. As on his previous album 'Moving Ahead', the rhythmic style blends naturally with echoes of tribal voices, piano keys and wind instruments (trumpet, saxophone, flute), creating the 'Joyful Sound' (title of the forthcoming album) that reverberates on the surface. With an artist as meticulous as Gerardo Frisina, it is to be expected that even the simplest beat has been deeply thought out and chosen from a potentially infinite sound palette, and this can be heard perfectly in the depth of sound of the four tracks of this release. "Soul Drum" is dedicated to the loving memory of bassist Enzo Frassi, who contributed to this EP - along with 'usual guests' Fabrizio Bernasconi, Gendrickson Mena, Alfonso Deidda and Ernesto Lopez.

Maestro electro producer Zero.dB: French made, forged in Spain, finalised in the Netherlands. Lucid last released one of his tracks back in the 90s under the name Zzaj (check out the Collected EP). Ever since he’s been expanding and honing his own fine-tuned sound in the realms of electro, minimal, breaks and deep techno.

Side one sees Zero.dB on top reflective form, taking in silky Source/B12 tinged Detroit on kunn.st, elegantly tamed noise and bleeps on the lo-tempo title track, followed by the classic and melodic sticky electro-funk of littlegroov to close.

Relentless and intense, yes, but with a warm heart of gold: side two opens with the ever-evolving deeptroit electroid funk of Matrice, an epic rush of down underground nearly-minimal techno. Then we arrive at last at the magnificent Asteroid: a rough, tough mishmash of breaks, noise, bleeps and voices that ain’t scared to be playful and jaunty too – an insane set of twists and turns that’s always bound for discerning dancefloor glory.

Morphid and x(eptional signed to Lucid Recordings in quick succession back in the day, their complementary styles helping to establish the label as a purveyor of pioneering and divergent quality techno sounds. They often worked in the studio together, and now they’re gleefully doing it all over again with this perfectly pitched platter of originals and remixes from the two duos.

x(eptional’s epic breakbeat techno sound always went down a storm at the original Lucid events – live and on disc – and second-hand prices prove their Lucid releases have lost none of their dancefloor appeal.

Morphid’s sparse, offbeat sound was always different, otherworldly. Delightfully strange while always warm and witty – and a little bit spooky!

Side 1 presents two classic originals, one by each duo: x(eptional’s a-whole-night-in-one track classic Dark Waves, a ten-minute-plus banger of epic proportions and soaring highs, followed by Morphid’s ethereal Gezouten Dessert, with its pared down bare breaks and brooding tones.

Side 2 sees x(eptional and Morphid switching roles to present radical and thrilling reworkings of each other’s tracks. Morphid strip down x(eptional’s Dark Waves into a cut-up of eerie, angular funk rhythms, voices and sounds, while x(eptional extract the beats from Morphid’s Gezouten Dessert and transpose it into a whirlwind of jazz-tinged breakbeat techno that gets a grip from the get-go and just won’t let go.

Tensor Norm is back. In this ocassion, we visit differents locations of the world geography to bring you an EP full of electro, breaks, acid and IDM.

Side A goes into the coordinates of dark electro in different ways. “Cell Reprogramming” by Clone Theory (one of its members is Heuristic Audio) is a spatial track with smooth percussion, a heavy, oscillating bassline and minimal melodic design. On “Automorphism”, Sigma_ALgebra resorts to smooth percussion and a drone-like oscillating bassline to generate a floating feel, over which choppy, lightning-like melodic profiles occur. Finally, north american LectrO cOd-E, speeds up the tempo to expose the military round bass, synth twitches and vocoder transmissions of “Morphology”.

Side B is incided in borderline spaces with the incorporation of acid sounds as main elements. After an opening that programs the rhythmic structure and adds pad atmosphere, “Amenacid” by Liðvarð aka DJ VLR ratchets up the tension through a brief acid line modified steadily but subtly. The EP closes with “Phanaire Luses”, a track with typical IDM resources with which, through the accumulation of bleep-like emissions, acid figures, sparks and amorphous sounds, Jaquarius builds a psychedelic track.

It took a while, but Coincidence is back on vinyl. And how: Serbian producer and DJ Lag teams up with Belgian Beot on the 'Patience EP' - a title that turned into a bit of a prophecy as vinyl production seemed to take ages to cut through the red tape and production issues spiralled out of control. The EP is conceptualised around two original tracks from each artist. And in return, they remixed each other's work. Four tracks, four vibes, one EP. Get you some of that!

'Rokenrol' opens the A side with a massive drumroll infusion. Unbelievable funky, wild, distorted and straight to the feet of anyone standing on the dance floor: Lag delivers his signature dish. The second track by Beot, titled 'Problem of Conduct', is dark, slow, dirty and nasty. Almost minimalistic although beneath the surface, an absolute belter lurks an snaps at anyone daring to venture too close.

On the other side, the remixes take the originals to a completely different vibe. Lag's remix of 'Problem of Conduct' keeps the dark vibe, but thrives on a massive broken beat and eerie atmosphere. This sounds brutal on a big sound system. Beot's remix of 'Rokenrol' on the other hand dumps the funky drums and goes for the heavy straightforward approach. The result is an absolute growling distorted noise monster that simply is amazing and effective.

The debut release of Pola / Пола record label, founded as an extension of the Half club in Belgrade, which became one of the most prominent hotspots of underground music and culture in Serbia. The Owl Dance EP is composed and produced by Tijamara, the new electronic music duo formed by sisters Tijana and Tamara Ristić, with one remix by the eminent producer Alexis Cabrera.

The A-side is opened by the track Sisters, which is the introduction to Tijamara's world, filled with the contrasts of their personalities. The track Owl Dance will take you on a journey to their birthplace Kikinda, the small town in the north of Serbia, which has the largest long-eared owl roost in the world.

The B-side is dedicated to their Romanian roots and great-grandmother Rakila, after whom they named the track. The deep and wavy minimal sound, inwrought with Tamara's unique stylized singing, will make you feel the spirit of Banat prairie. Maestro Alexis Cabrera remixed this track and converted it into the Half's vibe of the rising Sun.
