Mexico city based, Guatemalan cellist Mabe Fratti debut LP, Pies Sobre la Tierra (Feet On The Ground), on experimental label Unheard of Hope (Peter Zummo, Military Genius). Reconciling Mabe’s steps throughout her musical past, the debut LP features pop and experimentation that reflects her time working amongst the improvisation scene in Mexico City. Mabe Fratti’s sensibility is the triumph of experimentation over technical dominion of an instrument. The experimentation of sound with feelings, with existence itself, with an open heart, letting herself to be transformed by what she lives and hears. This is what has led Mabe Fratti from Guatemala to Mexico City. From the creation of pop songs to free improvisation, from the academy to noise, from collaborations in ensembles and duos to the profound personal journey that is reflected in her solo works. That’s why Mabe’s music converts us to sensible sounding boards: through a hypnotic and captivating performance, Mabe sews contemporary elements like shoe gaze and dream pop with ancestral influences that go from Gregorian chants to Sephardi music, transforming them in ingredients of a potent sonic ritual that causes a profound emotional impact. After collaborating with various artists, Mabe wanted to return to her solo works with the desire to create an album as a whole, not just a collection of tracks. Pies Sobre la Tierra was recorded in Fratti’s room with a Komplete Audio 6 and a MXL 4000 microphone during the first five months of 2019. She used her cello and vocals as protagonists in the instrumentation. Parallel to this, she used synthesizers, field recordings and she outsourced noise with the help of collaborators Concepcion Huerta and Mito del Desierto. Lyrically, she was inspired mostly but not entirely by Murphy by Samuel Beckett. The reason why the album is called Pies Sobre la Tierra (Feet on the ground) is because Mabe wants to refer to the conciliation of the space that we consider mental with the “physical” and “real”. However, even though there’s a sensation of separation, there’s also a unity to which we’re bound to observe through a lens and operate on it through assumptions and intentions.

Ma Spaventi is a wonderfully versatile artist. Over his decade-long career, the Italian musician has turned his capable hand to everything from ambient to techno. Once again, he is expanding his sound palette and challenging expectations with Vicino Lontano. Across eight tracks, an array of ideas and influences are explored with additional guitar work coming care of Odeon’s Michele Righini. The reflective hues of “Solitario” give way to the warming strings and peaceful brightness of “Crepuscolo.” Written and produced in Amsterdam between 2017 and 2019, beautiful memories of the past are the source of inspiration. Radiating Summer sunshine bathes “Bring Me Back” in a comforting glow, while “Velvet Lights” teases rhythm sections with thick bass lines and shimmering synth work. Moments of introspection arrive in the elegant gliding forms of “Bomber” and “Intermezzo.” The rumbling “End Line” finds harmony amongst a spread of styles, cascading chords and rich textures, all combining beautifully. Sounds From The Northern Hemisphere' is a collection of live-recorded takes, registered between 2021 and 2023. The Icelandic extraterrestrial scenery was the main inspiration for this work. Similarly to the nature of each landscape, every composition was crafted with a genuine and spontaneous approach, entirely avoiding digital instruments. A methodical sound research was enacted, exploring the analog behaviours of classic and modern machines. The result is a minimalistic and intense merge of sounds: simple, but meaningful.

“Produzione”, originally released in 1973 on Piero Umiliani’s LP “Problemi d’oggi”, is an amazing mix of acoustic percussion and electronic experimentation, considered by some as the first example of techno / trance music ever recorded. This song, along with “Attività”, another excerpt from “Problemi d’oggi”, has been ‘reworked’ by Gerardo Frisina, who cleverly extends the original content by mixing it with contemporary electronic sensations. Don't be mislead from the name, the enigmatic M. Zalla, is one of the numerous alter ego of the italian maestro Piero Umiliani. Umiliani, during his period of fascination for psychedelic and electronic atmospheres, starts to compose a good number of musical portraits dedicated, as the title reveals, to the problems of his time. We are at the beginning of '70 and italians are worried by mafia, terrorism and social conflicts: so it has sense that the music choosen to represent this anxious problems has a sperimental nature; dark and disturbing a sort of unicum in the long and extremly productive Umiliani career.And if, in 2015, titles as “Mondo in Crisi”, “Problemi Sociali”, “Azione Sindacale” and “Mafia Oggi” sounds still sadly actual, it's even more surprising find that the music of “Problemi d'Oggi” (Today Problems) is projected on the future, sounding still alien and uniques.
The record presents various styles: from Pink Floyd atmospheres (or Braen's Machine if you prefer...) to compositions characterized by a great use of drum machines and synthetizer (MOOG and Sinthy). We just have to listen the begginning of the opening track “Produzione” to give sense to the words of Sean Canty (Demdike Stare) that defines the music the first techno/trance track of the history; but between the grooves of this vinyl it's easy to find intuitions that many other artist and musicians – from Residents to Aphex Twin and Four Tet – will be able to catch during their carrers.

Mauricio Takara and Carla Boregas have long been key players in the experimental and underground music scene in São Paolo,Brazil.

Grande Massa D'Agua (Great Body of Water) is their second album as a duo and it sees them continue to explore themes related to water as they dive into uncharted musical depths. In discussing the duo's relationship with water, Mauricio said:

“...on the first record it kinda came a little by coincidence (or not), Carla had the name "Linha D´água" in mind and when we were listening to the opening track one day while I was filling up a bottle with water we thought the sounds combined well. so that kinda became a little bit of a remarkable sound of the record. Funny enough in the beginning of the pandemic we decided to take a turn and move to a small beach close to São Paulo, and that´s right in the middle of the rain forest, so by then water definitely took a major role in our lives. We were living right in between the ocean and a water fall, it´d rain for days on a roll sometimes and it was an open house where we had the sound of rain 360 degrees around us... I kinda think our music has a little of those different dynamics of water in its different states. also, it might seem strange but São Paulo is a city in the water too, and it has a very chaotic relationship with it.”

The music itself is difficult to pin down, always kinetic and driven by Takara's fluid, nimble percussion; there's a freeness to the sound as a whole, but also an atmosphere of tight discipline as the pair harness and channel the elemental force from which they've drawn the inspiration for their works. At times the lines between Takara's skittish percussion and Boregas' idiosyncratic synth work and sound manipulation blur into flowing rivers or torrents of sound - here, both water and sound have the ability to awaken in us different memories, and emotional or physical states.

Carla Boregas' other projects include Rakta and Fronte Violeta as well as being a prolific solo artist and founder of Auta, a venue dedicated to experimental music in São Paulo, and the record label Dama Da Noite.

Mauricio Takara also plays with the bands Hurtmold and São Paulo Underground (with trumpeter Rob Mazurek from Chicago) and Mnth, as well as sitting in on live sessions with an array of improv / experimental / jazz figures such as Pharoah Sanders, Damo Suzuki, Yusef Lateef, Joe Lally (Fugazi), Naná Vasconcelos, Prefuse 73, Makoto Kawabata.

Assembling a sprawling and idiosyncratic catalog of experimental studio music between Colorado and Chicago since the early 2010s, recent highlights include The Wind of Things (Geographic North, 2021), an ensemble-recorded expression of bow-splashed nostalgia, and the four seasonal albums of Fuubutsushi, the improvisatory ambient jazz quartet he formed with friends from afar in 2020. Sage renders projects with nuanced velocity and a completist sensibility _ when it's finished, it's done _ which is what makes Paradise Crick, his debut for RVNG Intl., a compelling outlier.Sage first staked his tent in Crick's conceptual campground five years ago from his home studio in Chicago (he's since returned to Colorado, home to the mountains and prairies often personified in his work). He had just read Richard Brautigan's Trout Fishing in America, a kaleidoscopic reflection of pastoral America's shifting identity by way of magical fishing sojourns. Inspired by that feeling, of getting lost but finding oneself in through the outdoors, he amassed over seventy demos documenting a fictional soundtrack for camping. Pull up to this park, and the sign might read, "Welcome to Paradise Crick. Fire Danger Is Low." Rekorder is "a kind of retrospective of myself", says M.RUX about his second, long-awaited solo album. For over 10 years, Marten Rux aka M.RUX appears as a DJ, producer, editor, remixer and multi-instrumentalist all over the world and has developed an idiosyncratic sound that opens up subtle fields of tension: M.RUX mixes a sound between experimental sound design and hooklines that stay in your ears forever. Between wild percussion and contemplative harmonies, between ecstasy and meditative calm. In his DJ and live sets, M.RUX usually steps up to the controls with a smile, discreetly bobbing his head, while the audience goes wild. He circumnavigates clichés with trustworthy certainty and develops his very own guiding threads in his selection beyond BPM or genre straitjackets. One constant is his warm, often stoically slow kick drum, which holds all that playfulness together. Rekorder is a manifestation of this typical M.RUX sound. Similar to his concept album "Vermonische Melodien" from 2020 (on the Pingipung label), the artist's curiosity is directed towards the musical visions of the past. When new music technology projected great visions of the future and when new sounds had not yet solidi ed into clichés. Rekorder refers to the recording device, spelled in a German way, because most of the recordings were made in Germany (and in England as well). Phonography is a miracle that has only been around for 150 years: Technology gifts upon us prosthetics for remembering sound. Every recording is a process, and every playback a new performative act. Recordari (Latin) is a beautiful word. It literally means to take something to heart (cor) once again (re-). This doesn't just refer to remembering, but also to a ponderous, loving, sometimes doubtful contemplation. It is a perfect headline for M.RUX’ approach to processing sound. Rekorder draws deeply from its own archive, which has ourished quite splendidly during the pandemic. Multi-instrumentalist M.RUX mixes his own recordings of banjo, guitar, auto-harp, synths, percussion and jews harp with fragments from sessions with friends that have accumulated since 2020. They unfold in the process of re-listening in the mix and transform into a solid musical tapestry. A typical gesture for this album? M.RUX bows deeply to the history of pop music - especially the blues and its melancholy, coolness and shuf ing groove. The harmonic framework of the album is based on blues scales throughout. Instead of conveying blue emotions via lyrics or the tone of the voice, as the original genre does, the synthesizer takes on this role on Rekorder. With his sound design, M.RUX achieves an ecstatic sorrow in his melodies, this gurgling portamento that is reminiscent of R&B (or even the ingenious title melody of the series "Bojack Horseman”). If voices are heard on Rekorder, then as hypnotic fragments that guide us through the groove as conjunctions: "Because...", says the voice in the track of the same name. That's enough. There are no lyrics, no literal weariness, no love-songs or storytelling, Rekorder processes all of this into timbres and groove as vessels for the album’s individual, contemplative melancholy. Two years and one pandemic after his previous release, the Italian, London-based solo project M!R!M is back with a new full- length album. Legendary New York band M'lumbo distil experiences from their pre-pandemic shamanic travels into their stunning new album The Summer Of Endless Levitation. The eight-track vinyl LP is an avant-garde take on folk music informed by painter and sculptor Jean Hans Arp's 'Biomorphic' works and it serves as a sonic renewal of self. The cult M'lumbo collective has been a legendary and groundbreaking act since first forming in the mid-80s. They cross genre boundaries as they draw on jazz, world, electronic, rock and experimental music that escapes the commercial world and take you into another realm entirely. There is no limit to their sound; each member brings their own cultural background to the mix, making the band all the more unique. As the coronavirus pandemic struck, three members of the band Rob Ray Flatow, Paul-Alexandre Meurens and Brian O'Neill under-took a regimen of shamanic traveling in New York City. The experiences led them to spontaneously compose and perform a suite of pieces, informed and inspired by Jean Hans Arp's works but also by the feelings of isolation and indefinite exile yet to come in their urban environment. Compared to the works they have done as part of the larger M'lumbo band, this album is a more modest and naive affair that is "a vehicle for the renewal of feeling using only a few instruments - acoustic and electric guitar, keyboard, flute, small percussion, kalimba and clarinet - and locating a sense of both the deep sadness and uplifting powers of reverie." 'There Are No Words' kicks off with heavenly chords and organic percussion that recalls the jungle jazz of Don Cherry, then 'Shoreline' is a five-minute dub with percolating rhythms and new age melodies before the soul-soothing acoustic guitar of 'The Afternoon Levitation' blisses you out on a sunny day. The perfectly entitled 'Swoon' is another gloriously uplifting piece of musical spirituality that fuses the electronic and synthetic with the ancient and ritualistic. There is more jungle jazz, big-band horn work and cosmic synth modulations of 'Open The Heavens' while 'Quanta' is a shuffling, jumbled mix of radiant chords, wigged-out electronic lines and celestial charm. 'Planetfall' goes from free-form jazz to double-time techno and back to cathartic ambient. The final trio of tracks conjures up everything from the transcendental jazz of Alice Coltrane to the cinematic downtempo of Calm.

This is the first release on our new Ex Machina collection; “Exit/Accidental (Abstract)” is a carefully chosen selection from the first cassette-only album “Exit/Accidental” (1988) by prolific Berlin-based producer and music publisher Mickeyblitz Finnkrieg, very active in the late 80s who, besides self-producing and distributing his music, also single-handedly ran a thriving underground cassette label called Deaf Eye, releasing about ten different productions and several international compilations. M. Finnkrieg worked in parallel lines to any known music circuit. This might be the main reason why his music has remained highly confidential so far. Incidentally: a Mickey Finn – or simply a Mickey – is a drink laced with a psychoactive drug or incapacitating agent given to someone without their knowledge, intending to incapacitate them. Heavily indebted to bands like Severed Heads and British Industrials in the vein of Cabaret Voltaire, early Test Dept. or Sonic Youth, the tracks selected on this album present the outcome of many a late practice evening and live sessions well into the small hours, experimenting in a completely self-made music lab with tape loops, resistors, capacitors, transistors, 8-bit samplers, guitars and a nice array of synths (Korg MS-20, Roland SH-1, Roland TB 303, Korg Polysix…), drum machines (Roland TR 505, TR 707, CR-78…) and loads of effect gadgets producing a distinctive sound, not far from proto-techno/electro and industrial-disco with touches of ebm and out-there funk. An all-analogic production and loaded with pre-recorded reel-to-reel samples, this recording, salvaged after 30 years, is a perfect illustration of the DIY philosophy and independent spirits of the time, cutting through time barriers with a sound as valid today as when it was first made.
