Japan’s Freedom School Records has been home to legendary artists like Kaidi Tatham, Rick Wilhite, IG Culture, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Eric Lau, etc. For the fourth in the DJ Series of 12s, Freedom School welcomes Detroit’s Julion De’Angelo. With previous releases on Meakusma, Tone Log & Sound Signature, Julion continues to cultivate his heavy sound rooted in the Black American experience. From funky bass lines, driving percussion & soaring strings, the depth of emotions can be heard throughout these pandemic perspectives.

We start with Dedicated, where dual basslines and live congas make way for pads and piano stabs that keep dancers dedicated to movement. On Vis/on he finds hypnotic space for meditation in a hip hop tone. As a tribute to the energy of the sun, Doors (Rē)Open (co-produced with newcomer Sabré J) lays the groundwork for joyful moments on dance floors everywhere, with samples from an Amiri Baraka piece layered to accent the energies found within the tones. Closing with Requiem, a low-slung piece with strings, flutes, and choppy percussion, he reflects and pays respects to lives lost in this past year. This is another output from De’Angelo that is at once immersive, introspective, explosive and expressive.

DarkSonicTales is a project by Rolf Gisler, the Lucerne-based musician and sound artist explored the peculiar sonic environment of a countryside building and its surroundings through the use of field recordings, modular synthesizers, guitar, bass, kalimbas, a singing saw as well as self-built instruments. The seven tracks, which were finalised in late 2019 and the spring of 2020, are as much a reaction to the setting that they sprung from as they reflect upon and express Gisler’s state of mind in days of solitude.

Listeners of Bryn Jones’ work as Muslimgauze know that he was prolific in both his work and in the way he sent out his work to labels and other interested parties (it’s one of the reasons some of that body of work is still being sorted through and released 20+ years after his passing). This compilation as with most of his work was submitted without comment, so it can be asked, was it intended to be a compilation? Had he at some point decided he preferred these tracks in this arrangement rather than on their other tapes? One thing we don’t have to question is the quality of the tracks here, regardless of familiarity. The new juxtapositions can be quite striking.

A record made when Yapoos supposedly weren't making music, this latter career EP first materialised on their Tokyo and Osaka 1999 tour, and is a must have for any Yapoos enthusiast. Fresh from the aftertaste of drum&bass records reaching Japanese shores in the late 90s, this collection of tracks veers even further in the direction of electronic than those that came before it doing away with guitars and acoustic drums altogether. The unmistakable vocal arrangements of Jun Togawa however assure the listener that these were never core elements, and as the case with all Yapoos records the beating heart follows on the heels of Togawa and the rallying cries from the underlying industrial production.

This EP would also see Togawa's developing interest in spoken word with the floating poetry of second track "Hamushi" and the final track "(something else)" - a tribute to Togawa's love of radio drama series and in particular the one-person-three-roles performances that grant its narrator the chance to roam free from the constraints of a single body.

Over the years of brave experimentation Without Letters have delved into a variety musical genres from noise-rock, krautrock to footwork, trance and hard techno. By filtering out what is the most sincere and engaging in their creative process, they have since rediscovered archives of early clubbing music, its social values and sound aesthetics. That provided fissures for getting around the notion of guitar as once rebellious, now obsolete instrument, its raw immediacy more potent now than ever.Without Letters debut album Abundance Supreme comes from Lithuanian club culture, its changes, desired or actually happening and from the parties we’ve been to in the past couple of years. It’s a manifestation of what happens despite the anxieties stemming from the ubiquitous state of abundance. Maybe Abundance Supreme is residue from the sexual revolution that never happened in Lithuania, us being its specimen in need for transition. The album is some palpable energy, a proposition yet to be voiced, not in theory, but through our bodies. Pulsing rhythms and piercing hoovers and stabs as suggestive ways of opening up, of being together in a shared space. Suspended between all this being a pretentious farce or potentially a quite pleasant, even pleasurable. Trance inducing rhythmical structures and the sharp guitar outbursts invoke krautrock inspired blissful harmonies without offering an escape. Dark, frantic pace underlies Without Letters set, with clear intent to cut through the hierarchy of performer and the listener, to melt all that into a playful, potentially ecstatic co-participation.

Music From Memory are excited to present the first compilation of works by British electronic pioneers MLO aka Peter Smith and Jon Tye. Titled ‘Oumuamua’ and second up in the Virtual Dreams series, the compilation is an in-depth artist focused release containing twelve thoughtfully selected tracks that touch on highlights from the duo’s discography as well as newly (re)discovered music drawn from a vast archive of unreleased pieces, sketches and extended jams recorded between 1993-1995.

MLO’s ambient explorations began when Pete and Jon, having first met in rival punk bands during the late ‘70s, found themselves with unlimited access to an incredibly well-equipped studio, having been hired to produce an Icelandic pop star’s record in the early ‘90s. Particularly charmed by the Korg PS 3300 and an Emulator 2, Smith and Tye were also deeply fascinated by outer space and set about developing a musical landscape informed by both this new state of the art musical equipment and what lay beyond the Earth’s limits. Painting with a palette informed by classical minimalism, new age and the works of Cluster & Eno; the duos primary colours were drones, sustained tones, washes, calming tides, gentle temple bells and soft angelic voices with flickering glimpses of percussion and drums that hinted at the possibilities of a dance floor.

‘Oumuamua’ is a collection of music to get lost-in, a wander down the mazed, mirrored corridors of the subconscious. Peaceful, flowing, fresh-water patterns, drawing the listener toward a mediative, inner space. Not strictly ambient, rather the music rests temporarily within the boundaries between drum ‘n’ bass, library music, soundtracks and Techno. Or how Jon Tye himself puts it: “It really feels like music from a different place, a different time, made by different people.”

Lazarus is back on Shaw Cuts with "The Rescue", a swashbuckling tale of sheer heroism, revolutionary sentiment and resistance in the face of oppression.

Following the fall of the Sung Dynasty, minister Wen, who pens a patriotic song to inspire the nation, is imprisoned by the conquering Mongols. Sung patriots plot to free the lord from the Celestial Prison by having themselves arrested and a spy release them once inside. But the prison general sets a deadly trap. "Harbinger", its heavy drums, mystic pads and untamed spirit perfectly describes the menacing scene inside the prison.

With the help of free-spirited hero Le Heru, patriot Bai Yaerh escapes the carnage. With more fighters in tow, he returns to the prison with a new plan to tunnel underground. Yet this too is a cunning trap that forces Le Heru to cover up the heroes' escape. The intense buildup of "Light The Torch" with its echoing chords and noisy elements, invigorates and drives the pack forward.

After convincing a Mongol-raised guard captain to join them, the patriots make a last attempt to save lord Wen by posing as Mongols and slipping into the jail. They finally reach Wen who has starved himself to death. The shifting drums and emotional synths of "Sinus Node" sets the serene tone needed to compensate for the loss, signaling a promising new dawn.

The legion finds hope while battling out of the prison to preserve the moving song the minister composed before his demise. "Cyto" and its melancholic mood filled with revolving breaks, powerful arpeggios and shimmering drums, leads to a shocking and disturbing end that is hard to handle.

Portuguese sci-fi maker Lewis Fautzi is here again with his very own recipe about how the music of the future should sound like.

His style has evolved to harsher territories lately, with distortion appearing as one of the main components here.

First cut "Induced Pulse" is a broken groove exercise, with pounding kicks and vocal samples providing the introduction while obscure components join the march as the minutes go.

"Undirected Differential" goes straight to the point from the beginning, with obsessive sequences running across a solid paced rhythm. The synth line evolves continuously, changing the filter frequency, mutating and constantly changing.

The B-side opens with "Intense Mechanism", in a galactic mood with one bar arpeggiated sounds, modulated wisely running over a blurred and distorted drum line.

Last slice is "Stimulated Desorption", again hypnosis and repetition as leitmotiv with similar sound components as the previous one but with a more shuffled drum approach.

Tribal percussion keeps banging its way through "Anti Balaka" before slowing into a deep melancholic track by the name of "Unarmed". Slowly building out of the calm "Unavoidable Unveiling" creates tension with droning notes and broken industrial percussion laying the soundscapes. "Doomed to Struggle" Feat. Prophan is a dramatic pushing and pulling of the hard hitting sounds and ritualistic chanting before diving into the galvanic rhythms of "The Summoning" Feat. Lair. "The Path of Moans" brings the mood to a sombre place where the whispers from the demons below can be heard alongside the chiming of distant bells. Pact Infernal's remix of "Impure" demands attention as it offers chaos into the fold along with viciously delicious synths. Earthly Measures are very excited to bring to you 'Doroja', an album by Santiago Córdoba & The Bauls of Bengal. Different to past releases, EM explores another part of the world, introducing you to the traditional sounds of Bengal & its talented musicians. Doroja, is the third album by Argentinian musician Santiago Córdoba, this time in collaboration with The Bauls of Bengal. Recorded at the Hansadhwani Studio in Calcutta, India, where Santiago arrived with only a synthesiser, some effects, and a Legüero Bass Drum (an Argentine percussive instrument used mostly in local folklore) - this album was first conceived in December 2017 during a residency in this mythical city, together with The Bauls of Bengal. The Bauls believe the body and mind are the sources of all truths and that the expression of freedom cannot be restrained by the labelling of genres or religions, something which is evidently expressed in their music. This provides the perfect foundations for this album to develop without limitations and too effortlessly flow to whichever realms both Santiago and the Bauls of Bengal wish to take us too. The album combines traditional songs of the Bauls, rhythmic Jhumar instrumental improvisations with the Argentinian legüero bass drum, and other compositions created together in the studio. The result is a melodic mixture/dialogue of cultures, folklore and ancestral sounds with modern influences that help create an experimental and addictive sound full of electronic textures. Participating in these first recordings: Arpita Chakraborty (vocals), Chandan Ray (dotara), Pijush Baul (Vocals, Dubki) and Tanmoy Pan (percussion), who later, are joined by other artists from different latitudes to achieve a captivating fusion: Matías Romero on strings (Formosa, Argentina), Guilherme Peluci from Mineiro on winds and Daniel Guedes on percussion (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), Porteños Walter Broide on tabla and Cobra Rod on bass (both members of Poseidotica), and the Spanish Ángel Calvo on trumpet.

The album was mixed by Rodrigo Cursach at Delta Uno Estudio, mastered by Daniel Ovie, and the fascinating cover art is by Alejandro Sordi. It will be released on vinyl by the UK based label Earthly Measures, in addition to being available on all digital platforms. ‘Doroja’ means portal, and this album is indeed a magical portal to music, song and dance. Santiago's only means of communication with Bengali colleagues functioned as an astral portal to build the sounds of this journey through strange and unfathomable landscapes that captivate and surprise by building bridges between different cultures of our planet. Santiago Córdoba is a multi-instrumentalist musician born in the city of Buenos Aires who has been developing his unique sound both with his solo project and with prominent bands from the Argentinian independent music scene. He has been developing his solo career through deep musical and spiritual searching, with the infinite journey as a primary objective. In recent years, he has lived in places such as Madrid, Beirut and Berlin and has released two albums: ‘Corso’ (2015) and ‘En Other Places’ (2019).

'Persepolis' is another turbo charged house kicker. There is techno energy in the tight drums and an infectious sense of funk in the bass as the hi hats and symbols splash about the mix. This is another forward thinking and highly effective EP from Darius.

Since the early days of electronic music, white label records have been inextricably linked to DJ culture and the ways in which underground music has been disseminated. unknown - untitled draws on the white label concept withholding details about the producers behind the tracks and leaving listeners to draw their own conclusions about what they’re hearing. The concept label focuses primarily on vinyl releases, with previews of the tracks available online, but information about the artists only to be found within the record sleeve itself. Several weeks after the vinyl is out, there is a digital release that reveals who was behind the tracks. The roster ranges from new and emerging producers to more established artists looking to explore new sounds. The label's second release, presents four glitched out expansive cuts taking in everything from warped jungle and twisted percussive workouts to cerebral techno and immersive IDM. With online personas often eclipsing the focus on music itself, here lies a return to form.
