Since his last outing on Control Freak with the sold-out Bunzunkunzun EP, Syz has built a reputation as one of the UKs most distinctive club producers, weaving playful, percussive techno with soundsystem-driven bass music. Releases via Shanti Celeste’s Peach Discs and more recently on Banoffee Pies have cemented his position as a rising star of the UK scene. Much of this acclaim started with 2020’s Mindforms - a self-released mini-LP which saw the young producer step away from the dancefloor to explore an expansive sonic world, ‘balancing the tranquility of the ecological world with the immediacy of the digital one. Tropical botany meets ethereal cyberspace through a fusion of styles, influenced by UK techno, hip hop, ambient, acid, and sound-system-driven bass music’. The original release was accompanied by a highly limited run of just 10 dubplates. Deeming this 6-tracker too good not to receive a proper pressing, Control Freak are proud to present the first ever complete vinyl run for Mindforms, housed in full-colour centre-cut sleeves featuring an adaptation of the original artwork by Jamie Fallon (Ghost Cell), reworked by London-based designer Blixa Aguerreberry. Alongside the record, Syz & Control Freak have curated Clubforms, a collection of remixes available digitally from some of our favourite producers, each bringing the original release firmly onto the dancefloor with their own production flourishes.

The first LP by Bloedneus & de Snuitkever, Milli Mille. Finally on wax, it’s Lukas De Clerck’s musical vehicle for his explorations with the aulos, that ancient reed instrument that mainly satyrs and archeological enthusiasts found beguiling. Equipped with his handmade pipes and the artful sense of devotion of a true modern-day aulete, De Clerck has dug deep into the technical and cultural peculiarities of this long-silenced instrument, paying it the kind of attention and mindfulness that Marsyas the satyr so lacked when he challenged Apollo and his lyre to that ill-fated musical match. But beyond merely resuscitating an ancient cult, De Clerck as Bloedneus gives the aulos a different kind of renaissance where its penetrating qualities are expanded and expounded to effects worth every nosebleed, paving new grounds in these practices of old.

Milli Mille hints at mysteries universal to humans of yore, present and morrow, like a Joseph Campbellesque recounting of transcendental journeys through drones and extra reverb. Elegiac modes encounter pastoral vibes that are punctuated by sly baroque flourishes, all pointing to the timelessness of the aulos’s sound - one can easily imagine its power of enlightenment through many ages. Yet in Milli Mille, an insistence on the fickleness of the instrument surfaces through disorienting, perception-shifting blasts and a compulsion to push the aulos to its fullest and most destabilizing potential. This is the flavor that Bloedneus & de Snuitkever imbues into that dormant canon, one that permeates the atmosphere long after the last note puts an abrupt end to these vibrations. The satyr’s song rings on, leaving the air abuzz with a timeless pulse that holds the promise of sounds still to be unearthed.

An uncompromising collection of club tracks, ‘Apollo’ opens with ‘Missing Channel’, a turbo-charged acid techno cut pairing pumping kick drums with squelching 303s. Next up, the title track shifts things into warehouse techno territories, juxtaposing bludgeoning kicks with haunting, ethereal vocals, while ‘Mercury’ cultivates a striking interstellar energy. Closing things out, ‘ppc’ is by far the record’s most experimental track, a shimmering, beatless creation laced with samples of space transmissions.

Introducing Jaisiel; The Canary Islands’ answer to Bacalao. After years modestly honing his craft in Madrid and Tenerife and re-appropriating forgotten dollar bin gems for his label Ears On Earth, Jaisiel has found a home on Antinote with his shimmering ‘On the Universe’ EP. Tinged with a late 80s sound are 3 tracks of convertible top down, shirts unbuttoned, neon glow dance music.

Opening the Maxi 12” is the ecstatic ‘Talk To Nature’ replete with chirps, coos and woofs. Its catchy melody a subtle nod to ATB’s seminal anthem 9PM (Till I Come) which was once quoted as sublimating sexuality with its “purring titillation”. There is an equally evocative fluidity to ‘Talk To Nature’ found in Jaisiel’s use of pitch bent guitar, climaxing snare rolls and pounding kick drum. However it’s all very lighthearted when compared to ‘Embrace The Unknown’ a driving and mystical track filled with vocoder commands, tinny drones and synth stabs whose accompanying pointed bass line makes this the perfect song for peak time transitions. Raving into the sunrise on the Carretera El Saler is ‘On The Universe’ a contemplative and melancholic closer. Still vibrating with residual dance NRG, the central vocoder breakdown beckons you to reach for trance, to consider The Universe, as it were.

What ties together this On The Universe EP is Jaisiel’s penchant to upcycle 80s and 90s trance dance sounds in a clear and fresh flavour, distinctly Spanish, while simultaneously using just-enough-cheese catch phrases without being too cliché or pastiche. An original and particular approach to rhythmic electronics, with an incredible sound, like in all of Potter's works. Six hypnotic tracks from Colin's archive of rarities, for the first time on vinyl, perfect to play really loud.

These six pieces were recorded between the late 80s & mid-90s at IC Studio, which was then located in Tollerton, North Yorkshire.

“I wanted to make some tracks which were much more rhythmic. By then the studio was a 16-track and I had acquired more equipment for making sounds and changing sounds. There was an Akai S950 sampler, an Emulator II, Roland Tr727 and Yamaha Rx11 digital drum machines, a Roland Juno 60, and some new effects processors. I even, briefly, used an Atari for Midi sequencing, but using a computer in the studio felt a bit weird in those days. Ironic really, given the situation now. There were a lot of new methods to learn and the tracks on this album were the result of some of these experiments, during which I also found ways of integrating the old analog synths with the newer machines. Mixing was still done hands-on, in real-time, with alternative and often radically different takes being made of the same multitrack. Very different to the way things are done now. Better or worse? Colin Potter is a sound engineer and musician currently based in London. He has worked within the fields of electronic and experimental music for over 40 years, collaborating with the likes of Current 93, The Hafler Trio, Organum, Andrew Chalk, and most notably as a key part of Nurse With Wound alongside Steven Stapleton. He started the esteemed ICR (Integrated Circuit Records – still active today) label in 1981 releasing a several wonderful home studio recordings of his own, as small run cassette releases.

Hidden Gem' is the Zenmenn's first full album produced together with songwriter and vocalist John Moods and follows their much-loved debut record, 'Enter The Zenmenn'. Named after a country song that didn't quite make it to the final selection, 'Hidden Gem' is the result of an extended jam session at a friend’s studio, in a field of mystical meadows somewhere south of Hamburg, in which the band would experience a series of inexplicable phenomena.

It was their earlier collaboration on the future classic, 'Homage To A Friend' that kickstarted their idea to team up with John Moods again, and in the late summer of 2021 the band set to work on a full album of material together. Using The Zenmenn's trusted drum kit, good old DX7, an unusual Ukrainian bass and an almost discarded pedal steel guitar, combined with Moods’ uniquely fragile voice, the outcome resulted in six timeless songs. The resulting harmonic sound is, as the band put it, “something like Adult Oriented Rock with a teaspoon of Celtic sentimentalism, a pinch of big city Country wrapped in a late night '70s style jam”.

'Hidden Gem’, much like their previous LP, was recorded without pre-arranged songs or any fixed musical concept. Instead, it captures fleeting moments of creativity and reflects the joint musical sentiments of the band members at the time. “Some artists are amazing at vision and curating, our work-flow is opposite to that. We are pretty messy and all over the place in our creation, as in life. It has its advantages and disadvantages, but hopefully it comes out all right in the end.”

One of the unsung heroes of UK underground house music, Medlar has released on Wolf Music, Wah Wah 45’s and West Friends. His remixes and edits for the likes of West End, Kon, Dele Sosimi, Glenn Astro, Disclosure and Billy Cobham always hit the spot with an authentic, raw and crunchy sound that work magic on the dance floor.

Here on his Interruptor EP we have 4 tracks which show off his range as a producer, taking in percussive tools, deep and dusty basement jams and blissful late night atmospherics. Lead track Interruptor is deceptively simple but devastating on a big system. Flipping over we have Cable Street which cranks things up with a techy house jam perfect for more peaks time sets. Once again, Medlar knows ex- actly how to make more with less and keeps the shuffling drums stripped back and simple stabs and modulating FX front and centre for maximum im- pact.

Finally, Turn Things Around brings a more 90’s deep NYC feel to the EP with floating pads, bouncing bassline, piano stabs and organ riff. Subtley epic and grandiose without being showy, this is a slow-burner that could just be one of those B2 tracks which become your favourite of the release.

Oi! This is Nathan Kofi, introducing; “Voltage Controlled Love Affair”. A story about love, love for frequencies, love for the journey, love for the culture and love for ‘the self’. This record will be my debuting ep since my name changed from Nathan Surreal to Nathan Kofi. And that transformation is evident throughout this ep. The A-side kinda represents ‘the old me’. A1: My Heart Will Go On and A2: Words of Affirmation are both tracks made a little while ago and are cut out of the same wood; a family affair if you wish. They consist of similar samples and thus share sonic DNA, yet reveal two completely different characters in their experience. Both tracks are fundamentally rooted in a classic ‘house’ ethos and display the use of vocals to enhance the listening experience while it progresses to its full potential. Although the “a1” exudes a more galvanising upbeat energy with a strong pulse triggering bodily movements, the “b1” takes a different route and evokes a more collective meditative journey; hence the title. Moving over to the b-side. This side represents a new me; personally and musically. Both tracks are rooted in a sense of authenticity and fresh renewed energy. This side moves away from the 4-to-the-floor formula and introduces breaky patterns and melodic experiments. While a lot of people, including myself suffered through several lockdowns triggering mental struggles as a consequence, I had a really hard time finding peace and balance in life and in the studio. B1: ‘Platonic Intimacy’ is the result of many frustrating studio sessions trying to find my mojo back; trying to reinvent myself to rekindle the experience of bliss and joy while music-making. This track, in particular, brings up the topic of writer's block, mental health and blockages alike artists are suffering from. But when those demons are fought, those barriers are broken, mountains are moved – It is the start of something new, and beautiful; ‘Platonic Intimacy’. The B2: ‘Candy Girl’, in essence, a straight-up sugar-coated electro banger with a mood, yet simultaneously signifies the power of ‘reclaiming’ what is yours. Best, Nathan Kofi

Charlotte is soon to be playing her biggest ever KNTXT party in mid April. It shall take place in her hometown of Ghent and see her play a historic 10 hour set to a vast crowd of people who shall go on an all night long journey. Also in April, Charlotte returns to London’s iconic Printworks for the first time in five years, this time with her KNTXT concept and once again is set to raise the roof. While staying busy on the road, she continues to curate the Apple Music x KNTXT page while cooking up ever fresh sounds in the studio. This latest EP is another subtle evolution in her signature style.

Says Charlotte of the EP, "following up on my latest Asura EP in September, I decided to delve a bit deeper in the world of psychedelia. All the tracks of the EP are psy inspired, some more than others. I’ve been playing these tracks for a while now in the clubs. Opener 'Satori' is dark and heavy. The chunky, raw drums hit hard and flat as the squelchy acid synths pan about the mix. An enchanting middle eastern vocal wail brings an extra trance-inducing element that is sure to lock in the hearts and minds of the crowd. The super 'Kali' is a slick and high speed piece that shows the love relation between psy trance and techno. The video game style synths peel off the groove next to alien sound effects, and the subtly evolving acid line burrows deep into your brain.

From the very beginning in 2011 the concept was simple and crystal clear. Mad Mats & Tooli's new label Local Talk had two main focus points. First, the actual music was to be inspired around those magical 4/4 house rhythms...and beyond. Second, the logo! The idea was that a simple and direct visual point together with a strong dance Music message would make the label stand out among other labels in their northern neck of the woods. In Scandinavia, the main theme is electronic 4/4 rhythms (techno, tech-house etc) and with Local Talk being more inspired by black dance music this has made them the black sheep in the hometown of Stockholm.

To set the musical direction straight from the very start they released Bassfort's 'Moon Shadow' which got instant attraction from both house heads and the more open-minded clubbing community. With its warm, melodic chords, infectious piano theme and big strings it's always been the label's fave jam from their now +150(ish) releases. When they decided to choose a track that would define the label for their 10-year anniversary, the choice was simple.

Mats & Tooli thought long and hard about who they wanted to interpret 'Moon Shadow' and after months of discussing options they decided that the only one they could trust to give the track a quality boost was NYC legend Joe Claussell. Back in the late 90's, Mats used to book Joe for his legendary Raw Fusion parties in Stockholm so the connection and mutual respect were already in place. The result is a +11 minute long musical house journey that builds and builds until those characteristic piano chords make an entrance and transform the dynamics into a rainbow of sounds. Epic is not a word big enough to explain this grand musical production !

But the goodness does not end there, we're only halfway in on this anniversary release. The blood brothers Javi & Luis aka Kyodai (and 2/3 of Bassfort) made their own mix on the B side track from the original release, Moonlight. As schooled jazz musicians they diverted from the electronic soundscape and went for a live jazz-funk production. The final product is a warm and musical version with live drums, bass, piano, strings and even vocals from the brothers themselves. The track almost comes across as something 4 Hero would put out back in the day.

‘The Pulse of Iron’ an apt reflection of modern progression into the unknown industrial world. It comes from Narrm based artist, Consulate who has found a home on Pure Space Records for our 10th label release. On this EP, Consulate delivers four tracks of dance music for the dystopian with a slick DnB sheen. On the A-side ‘Postrach’ the centres the record squarely within the realm of its influences, its intricate percussive patterns offset by industrial ambience. Here a half-time snare cuts through the abyss of ambience, while a floating topline carys you through dreary territories. Completing the A-side is ‘Spec 4’, a subtly staunch percussive track that is fueled by acute vocal sampling, weighty breaks and a hypnotic dub infused bassline. The flip side heads back into half-time territory with ‘The Fear’. Delayed vocal samples paired with dub-style stabs pulse in a heady but immersive rhythm. Rounding out the record is ‘Warlock’, a percussive track that proves the restraint Consulate has in his craft. Moody, sliced vocals skitter through delayed percussion creating a sense of tension. When it feels as though the storm is just about to hit, you are enveloped by fast-paced jungle breaks drawing you deeper into the eye of the storm. ‘Here beyond man’s judgements all covenants were brittle.’ Tracks written, produced and mixed by Consulate on Wurundjeri Land. Pure Space and Consulate both acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land and pay our respects to their elders past, present and emerging. Sovereignty was never ceded. Pure Space Recordings is the label venture from the beloved radio show hosted by Andy Garvey, and produced by Mija Healey which has broadcast weekly on Eora Nation (Sydney) radio station FBi Radio for over four years. T4T LUV NRG presents “The Last Illusion,” an ep of four bass-heavy and powerfully emotional tracks by Oakland-based artist Bored Lord. All of these songs are proper hardcore house tracks in her unique style, pressed loud and built out of love between queer and trans people...the same love we use to survive.

The label fell in love with Bored Lord’s work after Eris and Maya (Octo Octa) played with her at a queer warehouse rave in L.A. What they saw in this unique artist was an energetic sibling, a DJ with the ability to use music and magic (“illusion” here an ecstatic technique) to set bodies free.

The first song “Everyday 2gether” conveys the triumph of togetherness with airy stabs and cutting breaks that make dancers drill down hard while they sway. The second song “gnc Nrg” is a tunnel of an acid track, meant for building GNC energy on dancefloors and in those bodies ready to receive the message. “Woman’s Wisdom”, the third song, is a full-on psychedelic banger cast from Bored Lord’s lived-experience of using chaos to both destroy and create. The e.p.’s closing song “So In Luv” revels in love’s intoxication with its hard mid-tempo breaks and gorgeously lifting pads.

The cover art by Periwinkle Lamb and the title of the ep are inspired by the book “The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions” along with its accompanying illustrations. (L. Mitchell, ill. N. Asta 1977). “The Last Illusion” is available on 12” vinyl and for digital download from the label’s Bandcamp and at fine music stores.

Maugli blends vibrant sounds and driving rhythms from all over the globe. His debut album “Alba” (translated from Italian as “sunset“) is inspired by traditional music and the dance rituals of various Afro cultures and their diaspora such as capoeira, work songs or gnawa. While seeking to translate their spirit into the present day, MAUGLI combines these elements with electronic music, wobbling synthesizers and stomping beats. “Ladainha” is a soulful homage to the capoeira culture featuring Professor Chipreu PDM and "Baksheesh" to the rich American blues tradition, with hypnotic synth riffs and chopped up guitar licks resolving in a south african chant (recorded in the late 1950`s). “Mizan” opens with a pounding Guembri (a traditional gnawa three-stringed lute) accompanied by it’s descendant the ’banjo‘, allowing the sampled berber vocals to shine through. “Rawa’s” striking guitar riff is set up against biting synth blobs and piano chords, Nigerian fiddles and chants that swing us deeply into the groove. Palms Trax signals the arrival of his new label Cwpt with ‘Petu’, a new single featuring South African vocalist, Nonku Phiri. Originally debuting in dub form during the Berlin-based DJ and producer’s set at The Music Locker as part of Grand Theft Auto Online, ‘Petu’ re-emerges here as a soulful collaboration, neatly complimented by a wide-eyed take from Masalo.

Initially written as a slow-heating instrumental to connect the various musical dots across a DJ set, Palms Trax nonetheless had a vocalist in mind throughout, a fresh voice to lend ‘Petu’ universality and energy. Introduced through mutual friend Esa, Johannesburg’s Nonku Phiri draws on her signature style influenced by vintage Afropop styles and folk traditions, delivering a smooth and vulnerable tale of desire. Triumphant brass recorded by instrumental collective Jungle By Night adds to the depth of instrumentation and feeling throughout, each element driven by Palms Trax’s ebullient percussion and an altogether celebratory energy felt across both the original and dub cuts.

For his release on Pure Space, ‘Pattern of Spring’ continues this exploration of dramatic structures with continually shifting timbres - morphing them as they progress through energies, rumbles, and struck surfaces. The two A-side tracks are powerful displays of organic instrumentation with fluttering pads and subtle resonations. An upbeat tempo and abright atmosphere underpins the opening side, anchored by dnb leaning programming and off-kilter polymetric rhythms. ‘170 Shitshow’ showcases complex percussion underwritten by a formidable resonating karplus-strong section throughout the track. Whilst ‘Pulsing Delay Mod’ builds upon this notion of polymetric rhythms continually at play with one another, it offers a crisp and menacing drum pattern pulsating amongst metallic timbres. Flipping to the B-sides; ‘Cyclical Pan Workout’ reflects an unruly and evolving atmosphere, anchored by a wonderfully cerebral drum pattern and delicate pad toward the close. The final track ‘Nonlinear (For Pillows)’ offers re-contextualised melodies and percussion, providing a sense of closure and sonic bookending by linking tones and timbres referenced throughout the EP into a pillow like state.

A sacred grove is a place in a forest thought to hold spiritual powers. Throughout history, these sites have been places of worship and ritual. Since the rave boom of 89’ - a new generation has found an alliance with nature steeped in hedonistic abandonment. So it is a befitting alias for the Malmö-based producer Teodor to use in order to serve us these spiritual excursions into ‘open air’ territory. While he has previously donned this mantle to provide atmospheric lo-fi techno on the Japanese label City-2 St. Giga (then as a duo with his friend DJ Natto) - here he hits closer to the deep house palette of his 2017 album ‘Neo Geo’ under the alias Fyodor The DJ. For the 8th instalment on blundar, the artist has worked closely with the label in picking out the right tracks from his vast archives. While the tempo sometimes staggers well towards BPM levels of hardcore techno, the touch remains gentle and soft. This genre-defying characteristic owes a lot to video game music, and especially Japanese games, where Teo finds a lot of his inspiration. The first track bathes us in tropical field recordings before tripping off into a relentless tribal groove - countered by meandering new age flutes. A2 is a fluid and complex piece, vibrating with a warm tenderness all the while maintaining a minimal progressive path. A3 deals in crunchy breakbeats and layers upon layers. On the second side, B1 builds through a hazy fog of tape hiss, pierced by the bouncing thud of sped-up bongos and an arpeggio that escalate it all into transcendental euphoria. B2 goes ‘off the grid’ for a heady trek of slippery beats that spill out into small flecks of breaks, all the while gleaming through the doorway to a sombre ambient jazz score. Closing off this 12” is a chilling high-speed chase through a neon-flashing night, propelled by a numbingly hard hitting drum machine sequence. The artwork for Blundar8 is as always photographed by mutantexture. The photos - which were taken during a hot summer by the Western Harbour of Malmö - were picked out by Teo as this is a place of great significance for him. Echocord revisits Mathimidori’s ‘Akebono’ LP with remixes from Deadbeat, FDF, Rod Modell and Quantec. Late 2020 saw the release of Mathimidori’s ‘Akebono’ on the Echocord imprint, the ten track collection saw the Mathias Kaden alias deliver a number of collaboration and original productions exploring the realms of dub and the guise’s underlying Japanese influences. Here the label revisits the project with an all star cast of remixes in the dub techno world. Stepping up to the plate first is Deadbeat with his ‘Dub’ take on Maiia’, the Montreal based artist shifts focus to tumbling dub echoes, hazy noise sweeps and jittery hi-hats throughout before the ‘fdf Reshape’ of ‘Soso’ lays down a gyrating drum groove atop expansive reggae vocal shots and an ethereal, billowing atmosphere. Deepchord’s Rod Modell deliver his first ‘Version’ of ‘Ork’ next, as expected the pioneering dub techno artist offers up a typically classy interpretation fuelled by hypnotic, chanting voices, the originals fluttering chords and a pulsating low-end drive. Quantec takes on ‘Akari’ next for a refined and reduced offering, laying down minimalistic percussion and subtly nuanced chords before Modell’s ‘Dub’ take on ‘Ork’ completes the release, as the name would suggest adding a more hypnotic and dubbed out aesthetic to things to contrasting his former remix.

Born in Ukraine, Brain De Palma’s parents chose to leave the area following the fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Settling as a child in Turin, the Italian ‘motor city’, Versino was immersed in the local techno scene in his teens and many more since, navigating Europe for decades, immersed in disparate musical corners, from the squat raves of early-noughties Bristol to the laid back charm of the Balaerics and the cultural contrasts of Egypt. Much as his life has changed, a heart-on-sleeve love of both music and cinema have informed Versino’s often spontaneous journey, just as they inform ‘Call Me By Your Nail’, his assured and sophisticated four-track debut EP for Gudu.

The Limited Series continues with the 9th release on the sub label. Bpls009 presents a 5 track compilation of stripped back and scantily clad drum tracks. 2020 hasn't been the year for clubs so here's something low key. The opening track "Pitch Control" comes from Guava. A subtle composition of percussive tools and well crafted sub bass, further exploring his sound from previous appearances on Holding Hands and Control Freak. Luxe fka DJ Luz, the Manchester based producer and B.L.O.O.M affiliate provides her debut track "Falcon's Rise", a nostalgic remedy with a euphoric vox and scattered jungle drums. Part two opens up to French producer Pipholp, his second appearance on the label, adding another broken beat, IDM inspired jazzy house entry with "Angers". A sense of patience between moods leaving you in limbo. Monotronique also joins with "Beat Himself" on the B2, a no nonsense bass heavy DJ tool for that specific peak occasion. More danger after his debut appearance on the Black Label Series (bpbl03) last year. In a total mood change, the release comes to a meditative close with "Wide Awake" from Padre Oe. A collaboration between Pete Lazonby, an artist with a long history most known for his chart heading solo production "Sacred Cycles" on Brainiak Records in the 90's, and Otto Fischer, a Nigerian free-improvising singer, lyricist and guitarist best known for his guitar work with the Alexander Hawkins Ensemble. The track also features Henry Lowther on trumpet, widely recognized as one the UK's best, and the strongest contributor to Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden with dozens of top of the pops appearances with a spanning list of important and renowned bands appearing at Ronnie Scott's to Woodstock. Taking inspiration from the open spaces, noise, and density of his adopted city Copenhagen, Perko follows up the acclaimed ‘NV Auto’ EP with new music that yields maximum impact via minimalist principles.
Across the record’s eight tracks, rhythms are reduced to their most essential components. There is no wastage, just pure precision and skeletal funk juxtaposed with microscopic melodies. Embedded across the entirety of the release are the sounds of the city. Listen carefully and you’ll hear recordings of his friends and their local neighbourhoods, with the city becoming a bed of sound.
‘Stutter’ melts these influences into quick-footed vaporous electro. On ‘The Reason’ Perko strips away the CSI synced excesses of drum n bass and synthesises percussion from samples of Stevie Williams skating at Love Park.
‘Grounds’ is a collaboration with Australian DJ / Producer Lia T, and stems from an exchange of field recordings between the two. These recordings became the core of the track, before Lia laid down additional synths. This all bleeds away into ‘Luna’, which connects gently cascading melodies to the urban landscape.
The record closes with ‘Pippin’, which comes in two versions. The grime concrète of the ‘Version’ oozes feelings of creeping dread and nightmarish bass stabs. The original takes the stabs and merges them with his take on the steppers’ riddim.
In Perko’s world, introspective and breakneck electronic music share the same space, mirroring the complexities of the city around him.

Says Eli: “I’ve been collecting 45s for about 10 years, but didn’t start playing them until our DJ
Kicks tour with Wolf+Lamb in 2011. Obviously I’m never going to have the deepest funk, soul,
or disco 45 crates (I’ll leave that to OG’s like Danny Krivit or Kenny Dope), so as I got more
serious about collecting and playing 7” records, I realised that I could have my own angle by
really focusing on collecting and playing House On 45.”
In contrast to DJ Spinna and Kai Alcé’s ‘Foundations’ 7” series on BBE, which focusses on
house classics previously unavailable on the format, the aim of Eli’s ‘House On 45’ is to shine
a light on modern house tracks that have only ever been released on 45. Some of tracks are
originals, some are covers and some are special mixes that have only been available on 7”
vinyl, many in such limited quantity as to render them impossible to find for all but the lucky
few.
Eli sums up: “45s are perfect for my DJ style. I get bored playing more than three minutes of
a track and with 45s you always have to keep it moving, know your records, and be ready
with the next one. You can cover so many styles in one record bag that you can throw over
your shoulder. There’s also tons of music only available on 45, usually limited pressings, so
when you find something special you feel like you’ve been let in on a secret.”

Apollo / R&S are proud to present a compilation album of a series of classic EPs of timeless vibes and lush percussive excursions from overlooked Japanese innovator Mr YT AKA Yuji Takenouchi.

The 'Brand New Day’, ‘Southern Paradise’ and ‘Parfum’ Eps were originally release between 1997 - 1998 on Apollo Records and R&S sub-labels Generations and Global Cuts.

Over the intervening years, the EPs' heady blend of atmospheric pressure, balmy pads and deep grooves has percolated, gathering fans across the globe, to the point where original copies are in high demand on the secondhand market.

Created in the late 90s on a hardware set up of Roland Super Jupiter, Roland JV1080, Roland D550, Yamaha TX81Z and Akai S1100, Takenouchi was burning with inspiration from the sounds of Ron Trent and Chez Damier, Basic Channel, House of 909, Ian Pooley and Carl Craig.

A video game musician by profession, Takenouchi was used to producing music for specific scenes / sequences - starting from scratch had him baffled. Deciding to set a theme or concept for each EP proved to be the breakthrough he needed, a day of new environment for 'Brand New Day’, yin and yang for 'Southern Paradise’ and imaginary fragrances for ‘Parfum'. Looking at pictures related to each of these themes helped to fuel his creativity while producing.

From the sun dappled balearic haze of opener ‘Morning’ to the blissed out bump of ‘Afternoon’, the gauzy euphoria of ‘Ocean In Heaven’ to the cosmic funk pulse of ‘Regard’, the music contained in the 'Brand New Day’ compilation remains as timely and relevant as the day it was released and should see Mr. YT appreciated alongside the likes of the US and European producers who first inspired him.
