There are few people across the globe, who will have not been touched by the work of Frankie Knuckles. Forever regarded as ‘The Godfather of House’ for his unrivalled contribution to the house music we know today; what started as an underground movement in Chicago has grown to international heights thanks to Frankie. His records earned him recognition on a global scale, allowing him to work with some of the globes biggest names including the likes of Diana Ross, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. Five years ago, Frankie passed away in Chicago on 31st March 2014 leaving behind one of the greatest house music legacies spanning almost four decades. Now he is commemorated by long time writing and production partner Eric Kupper. Eric, himself a seasoned DJ producer and writer, has worked on over 116 Billboard #1 Dance Records and played a pivotal role in a many of Frankie’s productions. Having both worked together for many years they established themselves at ‘Director’s Cut’ from 2011 and set about producing original releases and remixes based on the classic ‘Def Mix’ sound while sharing equal credits for their creations. Together they re-produced and re-purpose classic cuts for modern dancefloors, with reworks including tracks from Marshall Jefferson, Ashford & Simpson, Artful & Ridney and The Sunburst Band, alongside Frankie Knuckles originals. These releases have now been brought together by Eric to feature on special album called ‘The Directors Cut Collection’ on SoSure Music. It includes the Director’s Cut reworks of Frankie’s classic cuts such as ‘Your Love’ and ‘Take You There’ with Jamie Principle, alongside Frankie’s first #1 single - ‘The Whistle Song’ on which Eric shares writing credits. Within a multitude of classic reworks, highlights include a previously unreleased version of Ashford & Simpson’s ‘Bourgie Bourgie’ and a huge Director’s Cut Retro Signature mix of Marshall Jefferson’s 'The House Music Anthem (Move Your Body)' featuring Curtis McClain. The Director’s Cut Collection is a fitting tribute to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Frankie’s passing whilst giving Eric a platform to tell his side of the creative story. Danish artist Ziggy Phunk has seen his star rise rapidly over the last couple of years on the back of a series of sublime releases. His track here ‘Vibes of Nola’ is as captivating as anything that he has produced to date. Built around some incredible keys its funk infused bassline gives it some genuine dancefloor guile. Over on the flip Kikko Esse & Emanuele Del Carmine’s ‘Funky Tranky’ brings to mind some of Masters at Works jazzier moments as Nuyorikan Soul. Built round some wonderful live bass guitar playing its layers of sumptuous guitar and brass are a joy. Closing the EP is an essential Latin-edged dance-floor gem in the shape of ‘Calabao’ from Colombia’s irrepressible Vagabundo Club Social. Acidic bass notes and filtered vocals add the grit here. It’s a track which you can expect to be ubiquitous on in the know dancefloors across the tail end of 2020. Yet again Topical Disco raises the bar ever higher for contemporary disco.

The wondrous rarity that is Hipnotic ‘Are You Lonely’ gets the rework treatment form four masters of the re-edit, each with their own trademark sound.
First up to the operating table, Opolopo increases the tempo edging up to the 118-mark adding a characteristic juiced up bass synth that oozes smoothness and swapping the flute melodies with cosmic synth lines that sparkle in the darkness.
Greg Wilson & Che Wilson tackle edit duties next in classic Wilson style. Again, opting to move into peak-time tempo territory, they begin with a stripped back, spacey intro that sees elements added one by one from a bumping bass and panning pads to rough snares and crisp claps. It wouldn’t be a Wilson edit without a double dose of tape delay, the duo dropping the vocals and synth lines expertly in and out for maximum dancefloor flavour.
Back down to the original pace on the B side, The Revenge offers up a slick, late-night redub treat. Only a handful of components are involved as he chops and changes the bass and synth lines to provide a mesmerizingly chuggy groove whilst dropping in choice vocal echoes that makes Hipnotic, even more hypnotic. Last up, Yam Who brings those strutting guitars further forward in the mix whilst adding some delicate piano touches that offer an elegant enhancement to the original.
Four new interpretations of a much loved and sought-after funk fuelled, boogie gem.

A never before released version of a truly, legendary house record from the late great Frankie Knuckles…working in collaboration with The Frankie Knuckles Foundation who will receive 50% of the profits from this project, SoSure Music is proud to present the Director’s Cut re-production of ‘Baby Wants To Ride’. Alongside this, a vinyl exclusive edit by Jimmy Edgar, which was originally a tribute release after Frankie’s passing in 2014, finally gets an official release.
2011 saw the launch of Frankie and long-time production partner Eric Kupper’s ‘Director’s Cut’ project, with the aim to release new music, whilst re-producing classic cuts to fit with the modern dancefloor. SoSure Music is now working alongside Eric Kupper and Hector Romero, with the blessing of both Def Mix and The Frankie Knuckles Foundation, to bring a renewed focus to some of this material.
First up, the illustrious, evocative 1987 anthem, ‘Baby Wants To Ride’. Rightly regarded as a masterpiece of early Chicago house and a pioneering classic through and through. Knuckles and Kupper extend the intro and outro to allow for those sweeping blends, whilst adding deft touches and reprogrammed lines to give a crisper, more detailed feel to this sumptuous slice of definitive house music. Couple that with newly spiritualised vocals and fresh erotic ad libs from Jamie Principle and prepare to rekindle that infectious energy 32 years down the line.
On the B side, Jimmy Edgar showcases his trademark touch to provide a fresh spin on the original whilst staying true to its essence. Reworking the arps, adding atmospheric drops and crunchy percussive elements, whilst holding off on the iconic vocal till the last section, all combine to give this version a unique, big room character that nods to the past, yet reinterprets for the present. A fitting tribute from an artist whose own productions are clearly laced with influence from Frankie Knuckles.

Beacon's third full-length record enters sight as a work of meticulous revision and refraction.
Returning home to New York in 2016, four years and several tours since the duo's first
release with Ghostly International, Thomas Mullarney III and Jacob Gossett knew the next
direction would be di-erent. Together they embarked on open-ended sessions, adopting a
more linear style of songwriting compared to their previous loop and texture-driven method.
They fundamentally constructed demos from piano chords and guitar phrases with vocal
melodies, editing iterations almost ad infinitum, looking through each from a multitude of
angles. Compositions expanded, while others pared back to where they began. Like the
bending of light, this abstractive and patient process outlines a space and scale in which
seemingly separate colors _ minimalist ballads, elaborate pop spirituals, and four-on-the-floor
dance sequences _ can coexist at di-erent speeds, fanning out with spectral cohesion. A
prismatic collection Beacon call Gravity Pairs. On Gravity Pairs, Beacon channel the
philosophy with pure pop mystique, slicing through dense and foggy dance and electronic
music apparatuses to create something familiar but unique, melodic but cathartic. Rippling
through these songs are iridescent synthesizer lines, stoic piano phrasing, dazzling percussion,
posh harpsichord, understated xylophone, and a crisp voice in complete control. Taken as a
whole, in their various combinations and compressions, these complementary and secondary
tones unlock the lushest field of color, a universe of light.

Thomas Mullarney and Jacob Gossett, aka Brooklyn duo Beacon, introduced themselves to the world with the No Body and For Now EPs, both released last year on Ghostly International. The EPs were united by minimalist, R&B-influenced instrumentation, and also by a lyrical theme, with both serving as meditations on the darkness that underpins the most intense of human emotions: love.

The duo's debut album The Ways We Separate both consolidates and develops these ideas. The album focuses, as the title suggests, on the idea of separation — both within the context of relationships and in a more intimate, psychological sense. As Mullarney explains, "The narrative contained inside The Ways We Separate deals with two kinds of separation: one where two entities grow apart, and the other where we grow apart from ourselves. Over the course of a relationship, the two sometimes happen together, one being the result of the other."

A download code is included. Black Truffle’s documentation of the prolific recent work of legendary American composer Alvin Lucier continues with Works for the Ever Present Orchestra. This is a very special release for the composer, as it presents pieces written for the thirteen-member Ever Present Orchestra, formed in 2016 exclusively to perform Lucier’s works. At the heart of the ensemble are four electric guitars, an instrument Lucier began composing for in 2013 with Criss-Cross (recorded by two core members of the Ever Present Orchestra, Oren Ambarchi and Stephen O’Malley, for whom it was composed, on Black Truffle 033). Through the use of e-bows, the guitars take on a role akin to the slow sweep pure wave oscillators heard in many of Lucier’s works since the early 1980s, but with added harmonic richness. Like much of Lucier’s instrumental music, the pieces recorded here focus on acoustic phenomena, especially beating patterns, produced by the interference between closely tuned pitches. The work presented here is some of the richest and most inviting that Lucier has composed. Though all of the pieces clearly belong to the same continuing exploration of the behaviour of sound in physical space and make use of related compositional devices, each takes on a strikingly different character. Where Double Helix, for four guitars, rests on a pillow of warm, low hum, Epo-5, for two guitars, saxophone, violin, and glockenspiel possess a limpid, crystalline quality. Accompanying the four new compositions are two adaptations of existing pieces for radically different instrumentation, demonstrating Lucier’s excitement about the new possibilities suggested by this dedicated ensemble. Works for the Ever Present Orchestra is an essential document of the current state of Lucier’s continuing exploration, as well as offering a seductive entry-point for anyone who might yet be unacquainted with his singular body of work.

‘Soho Phaze’ wasn’t going to be light on the effects was it? ‘Going heavy on the phaser’ would have been an understatement, but what could have sounded like an endlessly swirling soup of effects turned into a breathtaking, intergalactic, early ‘80s jazz funk dream.
On the flip ‘Soho Nights’ keeps the effects subdued letting the squelching synth lines, feverish stabs and pure funk bass do the strutting. Both sides still do the damage to this day, with DJs such as Nick The Record, Joey Negro, Mark Grusane, Medlar and Faze Action all regularly drawing for the mystique and mastery of this 12 inch. Drumcode starts 2020 with a sterling EP from genre hero Thomas Schumacher, his first on the label after a long association with Adam Beyer.
No ifs or buts, if you’re a techno fan, Thomas Schumacher holds a place in your heart. His 1997 classic ‘When I Rock’ still gets rinsed, he has a vast body of stellar work on his influential former label Spielzeug Schallplatten, including a release from Adam Beyer, and he continues to deliver pin-sharp productions via his Electric Ballroom imprint, including a scorching remix of ‘The House of House’, the 1994 classic from Cherry Moon Trax. The rework was first played by Beyer at Time Warp and has been a 2019 highlight.
He first contributed to Drumcode in 2018 with ‘The Unseen’, a stirring contribution to ‘A-Sides Vol.7’, setting up a maiden EP with ‘Crimson’. Crimson’ is crafted around two minutes of tension-building synths, before a beat finally appears and a rasping deep bassline commands the dancefloor. ‘Feist’ is a no-nonsense brain melter, as 303 arpeggios bloom and recede, creating a thrilling rhythmic intensity throughout. Lastly ‘Anker’ brings the rave with eagle-eye focus, unleashing a wall of fierce acid to round out off the release.

Bergsonist aka Selwa Abd is a New York–based artist and musician originally from Morocco. Under the guise Bergsonist (derived from Deleuze’s Bergsonism), she uses a variety of media to investigate social resonance through divergent conceptual aesthetics (minimalism, techno, and music concrete, to name a few). Through her work, she explores notions of identity, memory, and social politics. In 2017, she started Pick Up The Flow, a resource to promote congregation and exchange between peers. Currently, co-run with Stephen Decker. In 2019, she co-founded 3afak with DJ Sanna, a collective that aims to empower Arab women’s creative vision in New York.

Neverdogs welcome Ray Mono and GruuvElement’s to Bamboleo Records this October to deliver their split EP entitled ‘Unsolved Smoker’.
A regular fixture amongst some of the world’s biggest line-ups, from The BPM Festival to Sunwaves and beyond, whilst releasing on notable imprints including Roush and Deeperfect, Italian duo Neverdogs added the title of label owners to their resume to open 2019, releasing material to date from Roberto Surace, Sebastian Ledher, Calvin Clarke, Manuel De Lorenzi, Matteo Gatti, Cosmin Horatiu and themselves via their Bamboleo Records imprint. For the label’s seventh release, the pairing now welcome two new names to the label in the form of rising UK talent Ray Mono, who arrives fresh from appearances on META and Moxy Muzik, and ever-impressing London based duo GruuvElement’s.
Ray Mono opens the A-side as he works bumping kicks, distorted vocal snippets and hazy pads amongst lead track ‘Mandala’, whilst ‘Unsolved’ sees the introduction of rolling percussion, low-slung grooves and snaking bleeps throughout. On the flip, GruuvElement’s introduce off-kilter synth patterns and sharp drum licks with ‘Smoker’, before rounding out the EP with ‘Shiny’, a stripped back and up-front cut fusing organic production licks and ever-evolving electronic melodies in slick fashion.

Cologne’s resident conjurer Hodini steps up for his second solo EP on WOLF Music Recordings. Bringing elements from his hip hop background into this unique five tracker, Hodini dusts off long forgotten cuts, sampled with that MPC chopped graininess, blending lo-fi vocal sound bites with deft jazz loops, all adding a distinct, textured edge to his work.
‘Velved Groove’ and ‘Special Shoutout’ kick things off, snapping in funk fills and skipping guitar riffs behind a concoction of hazy spirals that transfix from the off. The former is an uptempo, twisted, jazz club house jam and the latter a bubbling voyage through the afterhours, bourbons flowing and faces flying from every corner.
A master of misdirection, Hodini also moonlights as one of Germany’s leading underground hip hop producers HulkHodn, proving he can flip styles and meld genres with ease. Featuring his alter ego, ‘Doggo Content’ is his nod to this - a crackling slo-mo trip through the intoxicated mind, soundtracked by stretched vocal snippets, wading bass notes and a crunching snare.
Two of the harder-hitting club tracks close out the EP, both focused around hypnotic bassline carousels and looping layers. ‘Where’s The Wine’ interjects Rhodes flickers with bongo rhythms and unsettling laughes, as ‘One4Fries’ marries off-kilter, piano stabs alongside jazzy flourishes and fizzing percussion.

Since breaking through in 2015, Boxia’s music has quickly progressed him into the upper echelons of underground dance music stardom. Quiet and unassuming by nature, his sound is drenched in transcendental atmosphere and evocative soundscapes; making it a perfect meeting place for the warehouse energy of Techno and the intelligent thoughtfulness of Progressive House.
For all of us, clubbing and nightlife are a myriad of sights, sounds and experiences. With the concept of this album, Boxia has sketched some of the characters he’s met along the way. “I wanted this album to be as much about the people that I’ve met, as it is about me. People I talk to every day; people I only encountered once, and my life long companions.” He says.
“Each track is inspired by my personal interactions with these people. The quiet but dedicated raver who never leaves their spot on the dance floor. The friend who disappears at every party but always turns up hours later with a huge smile on their face and an amazing story. The chance meeting with a complete stranger who shares your entire outlook on the world. Each track on this album sketches an audio portrait of these characters who have inspired me.”
Over the fourteen tracks, these ‘shared experiences’ take the form of warehouse stompers, melodic soundscapes and delicate, personal moments. More than just a collection of club tracks, ‘A Night In The Life Of’ lifts the lid on a producer with startling range and a razor sharp sonic palette, tapping into his own personal memories to create moments of incredible introspection.
Take opener and title track ‘A Night In The Life Of’ for example - which marries pounding beats, sparse percussion and Trance-like synth work to form a detailed picture in the minds of its listeners. Boxia takes you on a unique, ultimately uplifting journey with each track utilising texture, tone and emotion.
After six powerful and musically rich club tracks, the relative calm and broken beat stylings of ‘Give Love Always’ is perfectly placed, showcasing Boxia in melancholy reflection away from the bright lights and buzz of the main stage. Equally, the album’s closing track ‘Last Nightclub’ also benefits from a reflective
stance.
“I have shared experiences with such a diverse and wonderful crowd on both sides of the stage.” Boxia says, “I hope that in listening to this album, people will be able to see themselves, and their friends reflected in the tracks in the same way that I do - as each track aims to build an audio portrait of their identity.”
Wildly entertaining, deeply personal while being equally personable, this is a perfect snapshot of an artist at time in his life where he’s ultimately at ease with himself and the music he currently excels at making.

Three incredible reimaginations of Nina Simone classics from Francois K, Tony Humphries and Coldcut each with their own unique touch and trademark style weaved within.
Francois K kicks off with a sublime deep house rework of ‘Here Comes The Sun’. Reminiscent of Larry Heard’s output, Francois nods to Mr Fingers with a bassline that harks back to those early Chicago classics, coupled with deft mbira touches that create an other-worldy feel to the remix. Celestial waves and singing rides mix with a buzzing top line melody that lay the foundations for Simone’s spiritual voice to hang in the air with a perpetual elegance and grace. A timeless slice of house music that earned Francois’ version a spot on one of Innervisions acclaimed ‘Secret Weapons’ compilations.
Next up, Zanzibar royalty Tony Humphries lays out a bumping remix of ‘Turn Me On’ turning the bluesy soul leanings of the original on their head and flipping it into an uplifting summertime groover. Simone’s words take on a different tone with this revitalising rework backed by staccato guitars and chopped up vocal melodies that give a playful yet soulful character to this slab of sunshine.
Rounding off the EP in classic Coldcut style, the duo meld ‘Save Me’ into a chopped, screwed and crunched remix. Lo-fi percussive elements and distorted textures blend with glitching samples and stuttering sequences that turn Simone into a tripped-out goddess. An atmospheric piece of electronica but with a harden edge purpose made for the dancefloor.
