It was May 2017 when Earthboogie’s debut release dropped on Leng. The soundsystem-loving East London duo rightly won praise for a fine EP that brilliantly joined the dots between all things intergalactic, terrestrial and tribal.
Having spent the last ten months recording their adventures, Izaak Gray and Nicola Robinson return with “Silken Moon”, the first single from their forthcoming debut album, Human Call. In typical fashion, “Silken Moon” cannily combines musical elements from a
myriad of styles – most notably Afro-disco, samba and mid-tempo Chicago house – to create a humid hybrid that defies easy categorization. There are bouncy organ riffs, undulating acid lines, clipped Afro-funk guitars, tons of tropical percussion and the chanted, carnival-friendly vocalizations of guest singer Nina Miranda.
The release comes backed with remixes from two members of the extended Leng family: long-serving producer Felix Dickinson and Turkish rising star Ali Kuru. Dickinson sticks close to the original of “Silken Moon” with a mix built around gently jacking machine drums and Earthboogie’s sweaty guitar licks while Kuru takes “Human Call” in an altogether more cosmic direction. Pushing the track’s psychedelic TB-303 lines and tropical textures to the fore whilst adding his own mind-altering electronics – most notably a fat new synth bassline – Kuru cleverly re-casts the track as a pulsating, late night throb-job.

The debut EP of 'heizen records' takes a step aside from modern production techniques heading towards a late 90's/early 2000's sound. Without waiting for permission, Daito & impala kick off with 'Fuck Protocol', a warehouse tool containing two simple yet well placed synths followed by a pushy acid-lead giving the first track an incredibly energetic drive. impala's & vnice's 'Bohlen' is a ghetto-tech homage with a catchy vocal and a propulsive kick and bass combo which brings you straight to the party. On the B-side, Daito's & emagemuser's 'Grazie' comes in like a stomping closing banger quickly gathering a lot of momentum through its polyrhythmic structure and dreamy pad-synths, whereas the beat of 'Simulektronik' conveys a trippy yet shaky feeling through the swinging synergy of a clamouring synth-line and semiquaver hats followed by a suprising bass lead.

Glenn Astro returns to Tartelet Records with Purple, a four-tracker of minimal slow burners and futuristic dance music, marking the label’s 50th 12-inch release. Since releasing his second album Homespun in late 2020, Glenn Astro has been quietly channeling his funky instincts towards new production approaches. Purple, a four-piece compilation of mutant future-boogie daubed in Rogers-Nelson hues, comes through with emotional heft. It also marks the 50th 12" release for Tartelet Records. “Following up on Homespun, I wanted to try out some more dancefloor- oriented tracks again,” says Glenn Astro. “Keeping it simple and practical, while not being too predictable. I incorporated a lot of modular synth bits and experiments, with ‘Flux’ being an almost exclusively modular-based jam.” Incorporating tricky sound design and fluid structures, Astro’s new lines of enquiry never come at the expense of the groove. From the opening thump of ‘Penduloop’ onwards it’s apparent that his rugged rhythmic kinks are present and correct to hook in the dancers, while the melodic drops later in the track edge in a little melancholic flavour to take the mind somewhere else entirely. On this opening track, the artist explores new territory with his version of early naughties minimal house – a welcome slow burner. The EP title track ‘Purple’ slaps with purpose, not least in the Linn-esque drums and melodic bassline, but it’s a positively dreamy piece which skips on crooked beat formations and floats upwards via a multi-timbral tapestry of yearning synth shapes and robotic vocals. On ‘Out Of Office’ Glenn Astro provides a generous dose of electro nostalgia when he amps up the heavy-hearted feeling with aching string pads and electro-informed machine logic. The track becomes alive with its deep un-synced rhythms and dark bass notes, pushing further into the abyss. ‘Flux’, with its tooly feel, takes the electronic mantra further and sheds light on the source of much of Astro’s new sound palette. Crucially, even in its techiest moments, an irrepressible humanity shines through across Purple. Glenn Astro’s soul is the binding agent which links his early, sample-heavy house to his more explorative new angles, and it comes through in abundance on this fully-formed release.

Steppin up, steppin in. Darius Syrossian’s Moxy Muzik lets loose another bomb, this time in the form of Eskuche ‘Feelings’. The NYC producer delivers a house cut drenched in deep flavours and deft disco touches all the while maintaining a peak time dance floor energy. On the flip Andrew Kay’s remix is definitely the one that has been turning heads the most – not least because Darius unleashed it at Forbidden Forrest festival and a subsequent online video led to a flood of ID requests. It’s a 130bpm, slamming yet minimal track with monstrous breakdown and dark in your face baseline. Megastructure_ Proudly presents Flesh Reconstruct, a collection of reworks of tracks of Hakai’s first EP, NO Flesh Shall BE Spared. This series of alternate-universe takes on the originals features four major heavyweights of the techno scene – Inhalt Der Nacht, Phase Fatale, Blush Response, and a rare solo remix appearance from Christina Sealey of Orphx. Each mix takes a drastically different approach. Inhalt Der Nacht’s remix of Invading Executioner features clean vocals from Blush Response, something not heard since 2014. Sōgi explores death and Japanese funerary rites from an anthropological point of view. This work reflects a contrast between modern and traditional ideas. It is comprised of four different acts: 1. Seppukku Routes the listener’s heart into the last minutes of the mind of a lost person, with no hope, sank in a sea of modern worries and low self-esteem. The piece is a tunnel of anxiety and desperation that ends in a traditional form of suicide. This act should be listened to from a first person perspective. 2. Sōgi Routes the listener’s mind into the funeral rite of the person who committed suicide. Minimal, contemplative and meditative tendencies. The prayers are full of shame and stupefaction after discovering the corpse. The other people cannot explain reasons of why he put an end to his life. This act should be listened to from a third person perspective. 3. Kasō Routes the listener’s body into the deceased’s soul during the cremation process. The sensation of being trapped inside the coffin, entering the furnace, full of culpability and rage about all those who feel shame, disappearing from the physical world. This act should be listened to from a first person perspective. 4. Onryō Routes the listener’s soul into another metaphysical plane. The purgatory itself as an entity, expels the vengeful soul of the deceased person, who blinded by grief, is coming back to a place between the physical and the astral plane. This act is influenced by the sounds and sensations that can be listened to, experienced and felt during an astral projection, when the person is traveling through different planes of reality.

Close to a year after its Blasted-fathered, inaugural first EP, Depth.Request operators reveal that the London-based imprint is far from being dead in a cradle and has a pair of legitimately attention-commanding names presented on the sleeve of its sophomore record as a matter of fact: with a career spanning well over a decade, Osaka’s reliable warehouse demolitioner Ryuji Takeuchi needs little in terms of introduction and really so does A1 remix-assigned Swarm Intelligence, whose designer creations are known to provoke thought and action at even degree. Phenomenon Of Combination starts off with Noctambulism, an anxious-to-get-to-it opener whose 6 kicks a tact work nicely to perceivably speed up its tempo of 132 and aren’t halting for bit as the distorted acidic sequence, spinning hats and tides of noise gradually show up to do what reaching crude oil connection would to a wildfire already raging. Definitively exhausting the synonyms for this titularly addressed brand of parasomnia, Sleepwalking brings the release to closure through diligently whanging 4x4s alongside a condensing arrangement of 16x16s, paced at 137 and supported in their plight by faintly striking claps with light hats peaking from behind the perpetuating pattern of a deranged acid wall that undoubtedly does to psyche something akin to subtly stirring the sanity meter towards E while drilling a hole in tank to eliminate the possibility of a refill. Maddening in all good senses, second adoptee of Depth.Request is a four-pack of tools forget to inflict hard damage, best recommended to those that regard their local factory-made-a-venue as weekend retreat. – rhetor

Love Not Sex is the second Stubb 12" from Paper Recordings' Ben Davis. The original is a melancholic slice of sunshine that draws inspiration from MOR and blue-eyed soul with a hefty dose of Balearica. Acoustic guitars, Rhodes, live drums and strings plus Crazy P's Tim Davis on bass provide the perfect cinematic backdrop for the plaintive vocals of Huw Costin (Torn Sail) and Rachel Foster. Sound Of Vast welcomes the return of The Mole this November with his 'That Is Nice' EP, comprised of three typically twisted cuts from the Canadian-born Berliner.

Over the course of the past two decades Colin De La Plante, better know to most as The Mole, has unveiled numerous EP's, singles and albums via the likes of Perlon, Ostgut Ton, Slices Of Life and of course Sound Of Vast where he returns here following output in recent years from the likes of DJ Sodeyama as The People In Fog, Cinthie, Com Sin aka Cosmin TRG, Shinichiro Yokota and Akiko Kiyama from the Japanese imprint.

Opening the EP is 'Vetafit', laid out across seven a half minutes with bubbling metallic chimes, bumpy bass notes, crunchy drums and an amalgamation of intertwining plucked synth stabs. Martin Brodin's venerated MB Disco label is back with standout remixes of his 2005 classic 'Semitone Shuffle' by Lauer and the boss himself. Swedish artist Martin Brodin has been deeply involved in the global house and disco scene for decades. He initially founded this label in 2010 - and the MB Edits sub-label in 2013 - and has put out classics by Chicken Lips, Ray Man and Psychemagik. His productions on labels like Nang, Southern Fried and Buzzin Fly have very much defined the modern scene, none more so than epic 2005 cut 'Semitone Shuffle.' Now, after something of a hiatus, big new remixes of the original mark the welcome return of the MB Disco label. The first is from legendary German artist Lauer. He is one half of Tuff City Kids and Black Spuma, and an esteemed house producer for labels like Clone, Running Back and Permanent Vacation. His version is a melodic epic, a real house workout with pixelated pads raining down on the taught, arpeggiated bass. When some old-school chords arrive at the midpoint, the club is sure to take off. Brodin then steps up with his fantastic Hulabaluba Remix, which is a much more party-starting and disco-fried version. The drums loop down low, the luxurious chords are warm and full of colour and the whole track exudes class. These are two very different but equally effective new remixes from the revived MB Disco.

The release clearly marks a new page in Dmitry’s artistic story – in his electronic reinterpretation of The Cure’s iconic song, Dmitry is giving the classic track a darker twist, with pounding reverberated drums and piercing yet soulful vocals by Valeria Simonova, paying tribute to his goth and new wave background. ‘Zenith’ is a majestic John Carpenter-esque synth anthem – the track can easily be imagined to accompany opening titles of a dystopian sci-fi blockbuster, with stark melodic synthesizer lines and minimalistic yet inventive structure.

Established and loved member of the Shall Not Fade Family, Felipe Gordon turns up the jazz influence on a fresh new EP for the label. The producer and multi-instrumentalist based in Colombia is known for his complex compositions and infectious beats, and Keepin' It Jazz does not disappoint.

The record kicks off with "Analog Only" - a highly textural beat forms the core of this bass-heavy groover that cruises along at a laid back pace, drawing the listener further in. Similarly gentle but hypnotic, "Continuous Develop" has the heady ambience of the chillout room, but Gordon brings in his intricate dreamy instrumentation and acid hints to great effect.

The second half centres a tasty bass solo that will get all heads nodding along. The title track is the chunkiest of house rhythms paired with delicate jazzy piano, a gliding summer party anthem. "Looking Your Reflection In The Water" is artful, perfectly emotive and gently rising like a tide from poolside piano into a hip-moving danceable pulse. The record closes out to "What You Say?"; funky house with attitude, a rude bassline and heavy swagger
