In The Red Records is proud to announce a previously unreleased new album by Brooklyn-born master of minimalism Alan Vega, Insurrection. The eleven songs here showcase the unparalleled vision and uncompromising force from one of the most influential artists of all time.

Alan Vega was born in Brooklyn in 1938. He co-founded the legendary New York City punk band Suicide with Martin Rev in 1970. Suicide’s groundbreaking 1977 debut is considered one of the most influential albums of all time. Vega considered his solo records the audio counterpoint to his visual art that reflected the world around him while simultaneously exploring universal themes. It makes his work as relevant today as it was when he created them. It was during his highly experimental period beginning in the late ’80s that he began working with Liz Lamere, who became the most crucial collaborator of his solo career until his death in 2016.

Lamere, along with Jared Artaud, resurrected these newly unearthed collection of lost recordings, which they co-produced and mixed. Lamere and Artaud spearhead the Vega Vault project, which aims to bring rare, unreleased and back catalog work spanning Alan Vega and Suicide’s career to the public for the first time.

On Insurrection, Lamere says: “Insurrection was created in the time period around 1997/98, after Mutator and prior to Vega’s 1999 release of 2007 and captures the intense energy of NYC in the ’90s rife with crime, killing, hate, fascism, racism, and moral bankruptcy. You can hear the tortured souls floating through this album. Post-Gulf War angst still enveloped Alan. He was having premonitions about a major terror attack in the US, well before 9/11. The upcoming birth of his son raised further awareness of the state of our world. All these emotions are mirrored in the sounds he magnetized. And true to Vega form, there remains hope and empowerment coursing through the tracks. In the almost three decades of going into the studio with Vega, we recorded significantly more material than the seven albums released. Vega’s intention was to experiment with sound which would become the canvas for the poetry that reflected his vision of the universe. Because the goal wasn’t to make albums, he had no timeline or constraints and would freely follow new paths uncovered along the way.”

Here is the debut, self-titled album from a.s.o., singer/songwriter Alia Seror-O'Neill, and producer Lewie Day. 'a.s.o.' is a thematic consolidation of the previous three singles and an impressive artistic progression. Day and Seror-O'Neill show they've mastered the format of the radio-friendly pop song and found how to subvert it completely. Across eleven songs, they have built a rich and compelling body of work.

We know where we are now, emotionally complex, trip-hop torch songs for club freaks. It's anchored by Alia's unique voice. Her words speak of restraint and release, taking us from the elegiac to the euphoric. This elegantly crafted, perfect pop music sounds like it has had enough of your shit. And Day's music is the perfect foil; deep, slightly menacing, restrained, and powerful. The album has a cinematic texture, as with David Lynch; the seemingly familiar becomes uncanny and strange the closer we look. a.s.o. take our emotions for a joyride before leaving us floating in space.

More about the world has changed than not in the decade since dance production dyad Frank & Tony released their last full-length record, 2014’s You Go Girl. Juan Mendez aka Silent Servant is a figure in techno history that needs little introduction. As a member of the Sandwell District collective and the label’s art director he collaborated on works that were responsible for a global focal shift in the genre as their label adapted and challenged the paradigm of minimal techno, taking influence from other sources such as dub, post-punk, and even classical minimalism.

But Mendez’s relationship with music goes back much further than these seminal releases. With In Memoriam, Silent Servant’s latest release on Tresor Records, Mendez writes a deeply personal memoir of a 30-plus year career spent exploring and absorbing the shadowy side of music; a carefully crafted elegy to people, places, and times past and the lasting effect they have on the present.

Across the four tracks, Mendez pays tribute to the earliest Detroit techno and electro, the Belgian EBM movement and the wave music that followed, the monumental dub techno sound from Berlin, and the harder, abrasive sound of the UK at the turn of the last millennium; exploring and referencing the genres that informed his later work. Each track name gives a hint to the timeframe he is revisiting and re-contextualising as the E.P. repurposes the styles that exerted an influence on him.

This E.P. represents a pure distillation of Mendez’s memories whilst also cementing his place in the current and future sound of 21st century techno; aware of where we came from but focused on where we are heading.

These tracks resonate with GIDEÖN's experiences at renowned clubs like Bassiani in Tbilisi, K41 in Kyiv, Berghain in Berlin, Basement in New York, and Adonis in London.

GIDEÖN boldly declares, "I set out to do EXACTLY what the global religious right-wing extremists are so opposed to: the PROMOTION of homosexuality." This sentiment underscores the EP's mission to advocate for diversity in the face of opposition.

With C'est tout, Voilaaa returns to us without revisiting this unstoppable recipe, while seasoning things with a
more Latin and Caribbean inspiration, brought back in Bruno Hovart's suitcases after several stays in South
America in recent years. Introduced last spring with the release of a first maxi single, this new opus once again
delivers hit after hit.
As on the already famous “Faché” alongside Pat Kalla, which displays all the classic assets of Voilaaa’s sound:
punchy Afrobeat horns, woozy chords and crunchy clavinet licks rising above a low-slung, hypnotic, dub discomeets-
Afro-boogie groove. The rest of the album is not to be outdone with a total of 14 wild tracks entirely
composed by an unstoppable Bruno Hovart.
Two exceptions confirm the rule, a beautiful interpretation of the song "Love and Death" by Ebo Taylor, where
Voilaaa's Afro skills perfectly melt with Angolan and Brazilian vapors, beamed by Joao Selva's lovely vocals; as
well as a magical cover of “Too Young to Die”, transporting Jamiroquai to the crossroads of Africa and the
Antilles, carried by the superb vocal performance of singer Olivya (Dowdelin) for a first collaboration.
Well, Voilaaa is back as its best, “that’s all” (C’est tout).

Following June's "[QR]V.172.TAM.24", featuring tracks by Avision, DJ Deep and Deetron, Laurent Garnier's COD3 QR label is back with another vinyl-only release. This varied 6-pack, coded "[QR]V.200.SPK.24" is comprised of exclusive tracks from members of the extended COD3 QR family: Skatman, Works Of Intent, Yann Lean, and Joaquim Plossu & Salem Focus, alongside Jules Wells' "Dreamer" (released digitally on the label in May) and Squal G's "Waiting 4U" (from April).

Skatman, the Berlin based, Tunisian born DJ, producer and label head of Cognitive Prophecy follows up his huge COD3 QR track "Tribute to a Dancefloor" with the deep, groovy and aptly titled "Transcending House". He has already gained recognition for his approach to electronic music, bridging the gap between classic and contemporary with tracks on Innervisions and Correspondent, becoming one of the most intriguing and captivating artists.

Jules Wells who delivered the infectious "The Clap" on COD3 QR 016 is back with the retro House sound of "Dreamer". Jules Wells is from Bordeaux, France. Strongly influenced by the Motor City, Jules has released on the likes of Submerge, Twilight 76, KMS, Planet E, Brique Rouge and Logos (Macedonia).

Works Of Intent, a core member of the UK South Asian collective DAYTIMERS and Emotional Weaponry label owner, has recently released an acclaimed guest mix for the legendary John Digweed's Transitions radio show. Known for his ability to blend emotive storytelling with rhythmic precision, he follows up his "Richer Sound" album (released last year on the label) with the intricate and uncompromising "Subversive".

Producer and manager of the Slates Records label, Squal G is a French artist who has been passionate about electronic music since the early '90s. Initially, he practised his art as a DJ before turning to machines and computers as he progressed with production. Never sticking to a single style, instead, allowing inspiration to lead him, he nevertheless remains in the Techno spirit, as heard on "Waiting 4U".

A multi-faceted composer and DJ, Yann Lean also works as a sound engineer for himself and other artists. Whether working as a duo with Madben and their side project Trunkline or as a solo artist, he has won the trust and support of prestigious labels such as KMS, Bedrock, Planet Rhythm, Skryptom and Materia, as well as COD3 QR who released "Hope" in 2020. Now he's back with tribal drums on "To Get Close".

French born, Mexican resident Joaquim Plossu has been making music as a producer, multi-instrumentalist and sound designer for the past 20 years with releases on COD3 QR, 31 Recordings, Fokuz, Repertoire, Deep Heads, Planet Rhythm and more. Both music composer and producer for TV and films, as well as Drum & Bass producer in his spare time, he teams up again with Leeds (UK) based Salem Focus (Fokuz Records / Soulvent / Galacy) for some energetic D&B on closing track "Cosmic".

To describe Italian-American composer Suzanne Ciani’s resurrected Buchla concert records as genuine gamechangers would be a gross understatement. These records represent a musical revolution, an artistic revelation, a scientific benchmark and a trophy in the cabinet of counterculture creativity. This sonic installation album, alongside her recently liberated WBAI/Phill Niblock 1975 sessions (fkr082), are triumphant yardsticks in the synthesiser space race and the untold story of the first woman on the proverbial musical moon. While pondering the early accolades attached to these golden era New York recordings it’s daunting to learn that these records were in fact not even records at all. What exists on this disc now was a manifesto and a one-time gateway to a new world, which somehow was only partially pushed ajar. Captured here is a genuine live act exploring new territories with a fully performable music instrument. If the unfamiliar, modernistic, melodic pulses, tones and harmonics found on these 1970’s artistic gallery collaborations/ live presentations (then soon to be followed by academic grant applications and educational demonstrations) had been placed in a phonographic context alongside the widely marketed work of Morton Subotnick, Walter Carlos or Tomita, then the name Suzanne Ciani and her infectious influence would have already radically changed the shape, sound and gender of our record. With the light of Buchla and Ciani’s initial flame Finders Keepers continues the journey through the vaults of this increasingly celebrated music legacy, illuminating these ‘non-records’ that evaded the limelight for almost half a century. Continuing with a kaleidoscope of rhythm, 'The Beatbox' slides in, framed with piercing bass-kicks and propelled with a dirty, forceful undercurrent of sound. FRAZI.ER masterfully orchestrates a melodically deep and razor-sharp peak-time track.

Hi-NRG synth pioneer Patrick Cowley moved away from his usual robotic steeliness on 1982’s “Primitive World,” drawing instead on the groove rock of early 1970s gay discos. It’s a percussion track influenced by Baba- tunde Olatunji’s 1959 hit “Jin-Go-Lo-Ba,” made more famous by Santana’s 1969 cover. Cowley updated the sound for the 1980s with electronics and drum machines but kept the playful attitude of the original. Two choirs of voices chant back and forth to each other, giving Cowley a chance to include many of his friends from the San Francisco dance music community.

This has been DJ Hifi Sean’s year, with a best-selling album with David McAlmont , count- less live gigs and high-profile remixes to his name. His interpretation of Cowley’s “Primitive World” can be counted among his best, bringing an intense Tb-303 acid house vibe that perfectly complements Cowley’s weird electronic blips and bleeps. Born in Austria, he relocated to his current home of Los Angeles at the age of 8 and, following a brief career in hip-hop, found his home in electronic music. If you're even the slightest fan of the genre, you’ll be hard-pressed not to have heard his music over his decade long career. Whether on his own Palette Recordings, Poker Flat, or Plug Research — plus a Fabric Mix CD under his belt, it’s thanks to a steady stream of massive releases (think “Mono On Mono” and “Sweat On The Walls”) that he remains a mainstay in the charts of Beatport and uncountable DJs. He is also half of the long-standing City Centre Offices act, I’m Not A Gun (together with Takeshi Nishimoto). “I wanted to experiment with some longer phrases again and to step away from the analog sequencers more and get back to using my hands to create the melodies. I also feel for the first time in quite a while I've made an album of songs for myself without worrying about the usual pressures.” Resident Advisor called Tejada “one of the most notoriously meticulous producers around" — an unmistakable proof lies within these recordings. Genres collide and combine with an unraveling of blissful layers on “Parabolas”. The opening track, “Farther & Fainter,” offers a musicality today's techno and house often lack — an accomplishment that resonates throughout the album. Tracks such as “Subdivided” and “Unstable Condition” reflect the wondrousness of Aphex Twin’s Polygon Window project, something that could only be reanimated and brought to 2011's standards by Tejada. “Parabolas” is a true highlight in John Tejada’s deep catalogue. Bold words indeed for a producer who is known for unexpected variation and tremendous musical imagination.

Rooted drums roll on in unrelenting fashion and a lead synth takes you down a deep, dark rabbit hole. 'Formula' then rounds out in urgent fashion with the sound of revving engines, hammering hits and haunting melodic loops all making for a vast and vital wall of techno sound.

Somewhere Between: Mutant Pop, Electronic Minimalism & Shadow Sounds of Japan 1980–1988 hovers vibe–wise between two distinct poles within Light In The Attic’s acclaimed Japan Archival Series—Kankyō Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980–1990 and Pacific Breeze: Japanese City Pop, AOR & Boogie 1976–1986. All three albums showcase recordings produced during Japan’s soaring bubble economy of the 1980s, an era in which aesthetic visions and consumerism merged. Music echoed the nation’s prosperity and with financial abundance came the luxury to dream.

Sonically, Somewhere Between mines the midpoint between Kankyō Ongaku’s sparkling atmospherics and Pacific Breeze’s metropolitan boogie. The compilation encompasses ambient pop, underground electronics, liminal minimalism and shadow sounds—all descriptors emphasizing the hazy nature of the nebula. Out–of–focus rhythms wear ethereal accoutrements, ballads are shrouded in static, and angular drums snake skyward on transcendent tones. From the Avant–minimalism of Mkwaju Ensemble and Yoshio Ojima, to the leftfield techno-pop of Mishio Ogawa and Noriko Miyamoto (featuring members of Ymo), and highlights from the groundbreaking Osaka underground label Vanity Records, these are blurry constellations defying collective categorization.

These tracks also exist in a space of transition when the major label grip on the Japanese recording market began to give way to the escalation of independents. Thanks to the idyllic economic climate and innovations in domestically–manufactured music gear, creators on the edges were empowered to focus on satisfying their artistic visions in the open headspace of home studios. While labels like Warner Music and Nippon Columbia explored new sounds through traditional channels, it was possible for Vanity, Balcony and other indie labels, not to mention self–released artists like Ojima and Naoki Asai, to publish their work via affordable media such as cassettes, 7" vinyl, and flexi–discs.

Expertly curated by Yosuke Kitazawa and Mark “Frosty” McNeill (dublab), Somewhere Between is a collection of music, much of it released for the first time outside Japan, that is bound more by energetic vibration than shared history, genre or scene. They are the sounds of transition and searching—a celebration of the freedom found in floating.

Note: The track “Days Man” by Yoshio Ojima is only available on the LP and Cassette versions.

What is there left for him to do? Establish a label of his own! “It’s The Arps” is the starting signal for Olsen. And what a splendid one it is. Created from scratch and solely on the mythical synthesizer ARP 2600 (check www.letsnerd.com for help), it features four tracks (reads instant classics) that couldn’t be a better followup to his 2011 super hit EP “Ragysh”. Towering over the assortment is the laser crime scene called “Inspector Norse”. Defying genres and blinkers, this is finest goose bumps dance music that makes you whistle along, laughing and crying all at the same time – but the rest isn’t half bad either. The short, but sweet “Myggsommer” gives away Terje’s secret love for quirky exotika, whereas “Swing Star Pt 1” and its brother have a (balearic) brilliance and witchery to them that is rarely found nowadays. Adam Beyer and Green Velvet’s behemoth co-production ’Simulator’ gets a trio of fresh remixes.

Something special happens with Beyer collaborates with Curtis Jones aka Green Velvet, with last year’s ‘Simulator’ a timely reminder of their musical synergy, following the 2019 classic ‘Space Date’ with Layton Giordani.
A year on from its release, Drumcode treats us to three contrasting interpretations that epitomise the sonic breadth of the label in 2024.

Mha Iri is first up having established herself as one of Drumcode’s most vital go-to producers in recent times. The Scottish artist turns in a blazing masterclass, taking the nasty bass stabs of the original and utilising them as thunderous motifs throughout her remix, as she brings intensity in spades with plenty of thrilling builds and drops along the way.

Emerging Australian artist Odd Mobb is next, whose music has been championed by the likes of Fred Everything and Skrillex. He brings the energy throughout the four-minute rework, amplifying all the low-end elements, while adding fresh bursts of colour. It’s a dynamic reinterpretation that will keep listeners on their feet.

Chris Avantgarde, whose contributions to Drumcode have so far comprised an outstanding collab with Kevin de Vries ‘Mind Control’ and an A-Sides contribution ‘The Last Time’, returns with the goods and lives up to his boundary-pushing pseudonym. This has more sides than a rubix cube and shows the German’s sound design class, encompassing elements of breaks, bass, electronica and techno, yet still manages not to sound like anything else out there.

Robust club gear rooted in ominous portent, opener ‘The Trick’ recalls the heyday of early 00s bass music. It’s tunnelling prog caught on a dark side flex. Then, in a coming together of kindred spirits, Melbourne hardware duo OK EG take it upon themselves to provide some introspection. Expect depth charge bass-weight primed for meditative moments.

‘Choreos’ finds the Hivern Discs affiliate at his deftest. Intricate and kaleidoscopic with careful attention to rhythmic intricacies, but never at the expense of dancefloor propulsion. The same could be said for the follow-up.

Equal parts driving and trance state-inducing, closing number ‘Mania’ has oma returning to the inky abyss from whence he came. Detailed, dubbed-out and quintessentially Kalahari.

A new album is finally on Drivecom. A 2xLp full of new tracks recovered and rearrenged around 2022-23. No doubt the legacy of the past works are represented. Some arpeggios and melody lines will remember us to sonic landscapes from the “La Hora de las Máquinas” or “The Source” albums by Boris Divider but with a new and refreshed production sound, for sure this will be a must item for all the electro community and fans of the label.

The album opens with the intro track “The Way You Feel Me” a mix between electro and synthwave with a moog bass and arpegio reminiscent of some Arpanet’s “Wireless Internet” tracks. Then followed for the “Letters From A Sleeper” theme. As the track’s name reflects, it's a clear tribute to the synth era of David Harrow/Anne Clarke’s “Sleeper in Metropolis” just like a reply from a postnuclear future, with a big role carried out by the initial synthline. Then the first slow bpm track is for “Distante” where synthlines a la Tangerine Dream are crossed and mixed with vintage digital rhythm machine sounds and the pattern seems to be taken from those Dire Straits’ “Money for nothing” intro drum arrange in an infinite and repetitive way.

In the B Side “You Know What I Know” track is again showing an Arpanet-ish intro synthline followed by a sequential prophet's arpeggio which bring us back to the old “La hora de las máquinas” sound. Closing the first 12 inch is “Sin Mirar Atrás”. One of the most important tracks of the album for the author. A big dimensional and introspective track full of vintage synthlines and reverb. Time for “Your Light” track is again here. This song was already presented with its own reference on Drivecom. A future pure Electro classic which was announcing the album months before.

In the same side, we find another slow tempo theme called “Recursos Infinitos” an instrumental track which implements several synthlines that interlink themselves into an infnite Tangerine Dream’s soundtrack that serves as a little break to the power and darkness of “Cenital”. Electro rhythm patterns and dark arpeggio synthlines in the vibe of Vangelis’ Blade Runner are mixed in this cold dystopian agressive dancefloor track. Later we find the theme that gives name to the album: “ Memories From The Dust” a slower track which mixes sounds and melodies between “La Hora de las Máquinas“ and other 80's digital keyboard sounds. The last track is just an outro theme called “Out of Sync”. Its name is a clear statement of its own musical arrangement, synthlines are full out of timing and synchro, it was recorded in realtime from a modular synth to a digital device in one take.

Nothing said new or modern or futuristic quite like a synthesiser in the 70s and 80s. If you were shooting an advert and you wanted your product or your company to appear forward-thinking and ahead of the game, then you would want something electronic, something out of the ordinary. When TV producers and advertising directors started searching for music that sounded like “Tubular Bells” – and then Tomita, and later Jean Michel Jarre – music libraries such De Wolfe, Bruton, Parry and Chappell had to have the tracks readily available.Compiled by Bob Stanley, “Tomorrow’s Fashions” varies from advertising jingles and TV themes to space exploration and gorgeous, beatless ambience. Though it’s 40-to-50 years old there’s a real freshness to this music.
