Surface Air is the lovechild of a long relationship between Malka Tuti & Black Merlin. On ‘Body Prophecy’ mastermind James Hammontree welds the frenetic vitality of post-punk and metal energy with driving synthetic club beats, factory force physicality and alluringly stark melodic pulses. Tracks like ‘Floating in Nothing’ and ‘Violent Mechanix’ feature both intensely catchy hooks and hammering brutal noise. ‘Sold Me Sad’ is a quietly deranged lullaby that takes an atmospheric turn. The throbbing drug-addled lurch of the Manson / Reznor-esque ‘Incubate’ is, at the end of the album, treated to a completely re-imagined and extended club style remix by scene legend Justin K. Biosphere is the main recording name of Geir Jenssen, a Norwegian musician who has released a notable catalogue of ambient electronic music. He is well known for his works on ambient techno and arctic themed pieces, his use of music loops, and peculiar samples from sci-fi sources. His 1997 album Substrata was voted by the users of the Hyperreal website in 2001 as the best all-time classic ambient album.

The Petrified Forest mini-album is inspired by the movie of the same name, released in 1936 and directed by Archie Mayo.

Substrata was the third studio album by the Norwegian electronic artist Biosphere, released 25 years ago by All Saints Records in London. In 2016, Pitchfork ranked it at number 38 on its list of the 50 Best Ambient Albums of All Time. Here are ten alternative versions picked from the Substrata recordings sessions that took place between 1995 and 1996.

Biosphere, aka Norwegian Geir Jenssen, is transmitting from a cold, polar outpost of the imagination. "Substrata" is the best ambient album I've heard in an ice age, an album of terrifying, desolate and all-enveloping beauty, the music of a man who's stared too long and too hard at the Northern lights, a music of distant rumbles, tremors underfoot, stray radio signals, yawning chasms and indistinct, grainy images in the half-light when the mind begins to play tricks. "Poa Alpina" reminds me of recent, frightening TV footage of vast chunks of iceberg cracking and falling away into the sea under the duress of global warming. As for "The Things I Tell You", imagine what Oasis would have sounded like had they been born Eskimos. "Sphere Of No Form" is shot through with a frantic peal like the Mayday song of the world's last whale and, best of all, "Kobresia" looms with a vast, mournful, symphonic motif, like the ghost of the Titanic. Chill out has never been this chilling.

"The last few Biosphere albums have all been made using samples and software, but Shortwave Memories is a return to vintage analog hardware from the late 70s and early 80s. Most of these instruments do not have any presets or memory storage, so all the sounds were programmed from scratch. The idea was not so much to make music that sounds like it was written in the same period. It's more like what would happen if I had the chance to use the same instruments, and applied the same meticulous attention to detail as the producers mentioned above."

Presented as a continuous sonic journey, this stunning record unequivocally manifests a world of it's own and already feels like a timeless addition to the rest of the Biosphere catalogue.

A live act renowned for their free improvised performances, Bios have markedly changed their approach since the debut release Fluorescent Minerals five years ago. To serve as a reliable basis for improvisation, the duo began to play with prearranged themes. Far from being limiting, on Powers of Ten these foundations become structures that are as full of change as they are playful. A single track can seem like a medley moving through sections of drama // reverie // fun without dwelling too long on either so as not to be at the expense of the whole. Fractured yet coherent, these emotions are professed in utmost seriousness and also half in jest.

Powers of Ten also marks a change in sound >> a new prominence given to rhythm and melody. Both members of Bios claim not to listen to dance music much, but incidentally what they achieve on their new record is a kind of evermoving anxious dub. Its energy endures even after the rhythms and motifs dissolve in distant soundscapes, so that those too seem genuinely kinetic.

If the listener decides to follow this movement, they will be led on a journey into the record, framed and imagined as a quest through parallel variations of one environment. "Bileebob was living in the lofts at 1217 Griswold when I first met him, this is one of the seminal places that the post Music Institute Detroit scene grew out of. People who lived there performed or threw parties in their lofts for rent money, other people living at 1217 included Buzz Goree, the founders of Paxahau, De3n System. Bileebob's an amazing and unique part of the Detroit scene, having created music and art for years, performing locally and internationally as a member of the Detroit Grand Pubahs and UR, releasing on Underground Resistance, and had a regular zine for so many years. When he sent us the promo for "Star Cross" from his personal Bandcamp page, we loved it, and for the second No Way Back stream both BMG & Derek ended up playing it. We just loved the song, so we asked him if we could give it the full release, and we had Derek Plaslaiko remix it. Italian born, London-based soundsmith Andrea Ottomani dons his Big Hands moniker for an excursion in modern dub on the burgeoning Teeth label. Ottomani is the artist behind the label Baroque Sunburst, which he runs with Soreab, and he also forms half of jazz techno unit Ottomani Parker with Abraham Parker.

The Vulgarity Of Snow is Ottomani’s woozy, lilting soundwalk through techno, experimental electronics and scorched earth acid. The untitled tracks are less like distinct entities and give way to a larger, conjoined pair of triptychs spread out over two sides of wax. They feel like a paean to the format, which no doubt comes from Ottomani’s time spent working at one of London’s most revered record shops. As a longer, more probing piece, it’s anathema to talk about The Vulgarity Of Snow in terms of bpms and sub-genres, and arguably it owes as much to free jazz and psych-rock as it does to more leaden styles such as dub and roots. At times it pays tribute to the work of acts like Basic Channel and Random Trio, deploying dub electronics in novel ways, but it is also broader in its choice of sounds. On B2, for example, Mino Carbone, the artist’s uncle and an Italian anarchist from the same lineage as artists like Dario Fo, plays a song from that tradition. It’s not a chaotic piece, but it’s not heavily constrained.

Teeth is an ideal home for Ottomani’s freeform work, following contributions to Beat Machine, Blank Mind and Oscilla. The label is the brainchild of Jojo Mathiszig, who also runs Farringdon record shop and radio station Kindred. Slade graduate and Kindred co-founder, Scarlet Griffiths, supplies the artwork following on from her recent exhibition at Dinner Party Gallery.

On the flip, the esteemed and prolific Tammo Hesselink produces a robust, and heavy version in his angular, crystalline style. Finally, Cong Burn wizard Paperclip Minimiser slows the tempo with a futuristic roller, an impressive creation by a man deeply immersed in technological innovation and at one with his machines.

Bibio is an artist who never likes to stay in one sound for too long. His humble beginnings producing lo-fi folk-tronica transformed dramatically into the hip hop inspired kaleidoscopes of his Warp debut Ambivalence Avenue, launching a series of constant shifts from intricate house beats to dazzling funk through to haunting ambient soundscapes, often all within the space of one album. While the quintessential Bibio sound may be hard to define, the guitar has stuck with him throughout all of his sonic experiments, and it’s what he pays homage to on his milestone tenth album.

“I like contrast between my albums,” says Stephen Wilkinson aka Bibio “When I finish an album, I crave doing something different for the next one.” Bib10 is perhaps the most outwardly pop Bibio has ever leaned into, delving deeper into the funk and disco direction previously hinted at with releases like 2016’s The Serious EP while his natural pastoral folk inflections still shine through. Though the slick riffs of tracks like ‘Off Goes The Light’ are dressed in fuzzy CRT television colours, they never fall into the trap of sounding nostalgic, featuring refreshing songwriting that can only be placed in modern day.

A metropolitan energy flows through many tracks, such as ‘S.O.L.’ with Olivier St. Louis’s silky, infectious vocals, or the sweet rotations of saxophone and guitar on ‘Cinnamon Cinematic’, trading jubilantly extended solos with each other. Elsewhere, Bibio’s hearty folk origins appear on the intimately drifting ‘A Sanctimonious Song’ and the acoustic ode to analogue on ‘Phonograph’. Both of these worlds are glued together in ‘Rain And Shane’, where lilting violin lends simultaneously wistful and soaring melodic refrains to twirling electric guitars.

The Newcastle-born, south London-based dancer, musician and performer Bianca Scout follows solo releases, and collaborations with Space Afrika, Klein, Coby Sey, Mica Levi, Ben Vince and Elena Isolini, with a spellbinding new album. Heralding an age of gothic, technocratic dystopia, in ‘Pattern Damage’ Scout weaves a patchwork of narcotic vocals, blunted after-hours ambience, and chopped-n-screwed sacred music. “The name Pattern Damage flipped in my brain when I was thinking about people’s trauma and patterns of behaviour,” Scout explains. “It has a double meaning. It’s not just the pattern of damage that’s happened to you, the cycle of abuse; pattern damage can also mean the damage that you do to a cycle, to break the pattern.” We hear this pattern break throughout the record, in the cacophonous noise collage of ‘Intro,’ and the labyrinthine chops of strings and voice in ‘Lead Us’. It’s also present in the unadorned yearning and exquisite anger of the heart-rending vocals of ‘Forest Spirit’ and ‘Almost Nothing’, courtesy of Darkmarik, the musical alias of movement artist Malik Nashad Sharpe. Recorded as one-take voice notes sent to Scout while Sharpe took part in an artist residency deep in the forest, here, their voice pierces through melancholy gloam, another sad cycle broken. “As an album it does feel like a dance,” reflects Scout. “It feels like movement.” Calling back to her roots in dance, there is haunted choreography in ‘Chances’, a sultry instrumental elevated into an autotune prayer, punctuated by fits of dusty breaks and smothered percussion. In ‘Desert’ too, recorded by Scout and power electronics mainstay Martyn Reid under their Marina Zispin moniker, demure cold-wave pulse is picked out in Korg licks and Reid’s doom-laden voice, as he reads out an account of one of Scout’s dreams. Yet it’s ‘Passage / Reversal / Fortune’, a collaboration with another movement artist, Kendra Chiagoro-Noel, who appears here as Nwakke, that unfurls most like contemporary dance, with Scout flipping Allegri’s ‘Miserere Mei Deus’ into a whirl of vocal harmony that Chiagoro-Noel then remixes again, producing and writing the latter half of the song, casting both of their voices adrift on a shared ocean of sound. “There are spirits,” Scout asserts. “Nwakke and I have talked so much about what the difference is between a soul and a spirit.” Bianca has performed at Royal Academy of Arts, the Serpentine Gallery and Turner Contemporary for Mark Leckey’s ‘In The Offing’. She choreographed ‘The Heart Of The Anchoress’ at Southbank Centre, alongside music by Peter Broderick and Specimens. She recorded a BBC 6 Music Live session as part of Marina Zispin, whilst further radio action has come from BBC 6 Music, NTS, Resonance Extra, Noods, and Balamii. Sometimes, in order to readjust yourself, you need to free yourself from what you know best and detox from your constantly connected life. In the case of Philipp Lorenz, it specifically came down to embracing the countless possibilities that buzz around the edges of today’s dance floors, sealing himself off from any new music, and leaving his familiar setting in Berlin in favor of making new experiences in Italy’s capital.

Lorenz is best known as one half of producer duo Feeling Valencia and the founding member of acclaimed club outfit Gheist. Under the newfound Bi Disc moniker, he now reveals a musical spectrum that aims at nothing less than offering the most authentic version of himself.

“Pieces, Falling“ marries the analog with the electronic, and hints at the numerous musical influences of the renowned composer. Mixed by famed German producer Olaf Opal, the result is a beautiful, deeply personal, and triumphant album filled with cluttered collages made from strings, manic drumming, field recordings, vocals, and layered melodies. Where other producers try to effectively build their songs to something anthemic, Bi Discs debut delivers one elaborate, victorious climax instead, where nothing feels forced but deeply felt.

The EP by Bézier "Negative Velocity" sees the Californian artist (now for a few years a Berlin resident) initiate the launch of their new German-based record label "Körperspannung".

For 'Negative Velocity', Bézier collaborated with Bay Area drummer and avant-garde musician Dave Easlick taking live recordings of him on a drum kit warping and wrapping his pieces into curves and ellipses to project mappings outward into the atmosphere. From Easlick's source material Bézier generates a technological, multi-dimensional landscape through mental manipulation of sound waves bending the fabric of time and space. For both the title track and on the b-side 'Diabolical Embroidery' the lattice work here involved sampling and resampling every puncture from Easlick to atomize, pressurise, polish and disintegrate into fine particulate matter while reassembling parts back together fortifying the sonic tapestry further.

'Deep Sea State' is an exercise showcasing the raw form of Easlick's drumming but laced with an adamantium frame. Melodies from Bézier's musical training past haunt the entire interlude.

Bezbog is a duo formed in 2013 by David Machado and Dora Vieira. Since their first release in 2014, the self-titled Bezbog EP, they have been exploring both acoustic and electronic instruments to create music that lives somewhere in between genres, styles, doctrines and musical cultures. Alongside many underground venues throughout Portugal and Spain, they have shown their work in festivals such as No Noise, Milhões de Festa, Out.Fest, and Tesla at the Castile and León Museum of Contemporary Art, and other places such as the Serralves Museum in Porto and MK Gallery in the UK.

Their latest long play takes its name from the solar deity of the slavic pantheon, Dazhbog - the god that gives, and its idea flows into the concept of this record, through the themes of life, light and darkness, birth and rebirth, and the idea of the omnipresent cycle. We can find cycles in nature, music and life itself can be thought of as a cycle, from the micro to the macro scale.

As they seek to embed their music with these ideas, in a way, their music becomes new sacred music, the music of modern pagan rituals. While Bezbog’s music seeks to replicate the meaning of what that music was, an escape from the profane and a connection to the sacred plane, in form it reconstructs it in light of the duo’s influences, from the obvious portuguese and pagan folklore, chamber and sacred music, to the darkness of doom and heavy metal, the structured improvisations of north-american jazz and psycho-acoustic hallucinations and the hash transients of electronic music.

Dazhbog, while a passenger of the same train of thought as their previous studio work, comes in a different direction from it. Chernobog consists of two short and heavy tracks, painstakingly crafted during several months, while their latest studio effort is a long suite of 8 tracks, composed and recorded live throughout 2020, that form a light and bright record where the duo embedded most of their influences. The album will come out on vinyl in late March, in time for the pagan celebration of Spring and Fertility.

Solo album by Betonkust (Dutch for Concrete Coast). The vinyl comes with a booklet containing drum patterns used on the album, together with a download link of the original samples that you can use for your own music. This record includes a Bandcamp download code for the digital files. Short bio from Betonkust: I was born in Utrecht (1988). I grew up in a very small town somewhere between Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Hilversum. The so-called 'green heart' of the Netherlands. That means there's lots of nature. It was very boring and/or normal. A typical Dutch 1990s upbringing. I've been listening to house music for as long as I can remember. On cassette tapes, on the radio, it was everywhere. Now I live in Rotterdam and there's a lot going on, mainly in the area of electronic music. There is Operator Radio, Clone, Pinkman, etc. Most of my friends are involved in music in some way. The older I get the less I care about gear. I didn't use any expensive or exotic stuff. Korg Electribes (both the sampler and the synth), Korg M1, some Boss effects pedals, a cheap mixer, a Shure Sm57 mic, a cheap guitar. For this album everything was recorded in FL Studio. Some tracks on the album started like five years ago with a melody and slowly developed into a full song. Other songs were made one month before mastering. It really depends. But most of the work was done in 2020 and 2021. I think most of this album is about transience, giving up, the infinite sadness of humanity.
