Josh Butler joins Kerri Chandler’s Kaoz Theory imprint with the ‘Piranha’ EP, featuring a collaboration with Josh Daniel and two further original compositions. Northern England’s Josh Butler has been at the forefront of the contemporary house scene over the past decade, racking up releases for the likes of Defected, Rejected, Solid Grooves, Hot Creations, Crosstown Rebels, Müse and many more. Here though we see Josh returning to Kerri Chandler’s Kaoz Theory following 2023’s ‘Sunday Club’ with some fresh, dub house leaning material. Opening the release is ‘Be There’, a collaboration with Josh Daniel, laid out across five and half minutes with dubbed out piano chords, crisp drums, a bouncy bass line and Daniel’s soulful vocal stylings. A dub mix is offered up to follow, laying focus solely on the groove. On the flip side we have ‘Piranha’ up first, a hazy journey through dubbed out synth swells, airy vocal chants, skippy low-slung percussion and snaking sub bass tones. ‘Chess’ then rounds out the EP, laying down heavily swung minimalistic percussion, fluttering low end pulsations and ethereal atmospheric textures to create a subtly unfurling, cinematic dance floor groove.

Following a debut appearance on the reverse label in 2020, Bristol-based artist Ido Plumes is back on Livity Sound with four tracks of experimental dance music for soundsystems. With the two-part EP Mediterranean Dreams, Perugia producer and composer Feel Fly revisits his musical roots and pays tribute to the sounds and ‘sun-kissed nostalgia’ that informed his style. Mediterranean Dreams Part 1 collected four tracks, and added that Feel Fly touch of emotive chord progressions and layered production onto cosmic disco grooves to powerful dancefloor effect. Now with Mediterranean Dream Part 2, Feel Fly switches the tempo both up and down, to fully demonstrate his affinity for club moments of all shapes and sizes. Nebula flies out the gate with full intent, recalling classic Detroit techno while pushing the vibe even more wide-screen - it’s driving, melodic dance music that delivers on the fine details as much as it does on the life-affirming, big picture sentiment. Optical Bells opens in meditative style, not unlike a new dawn in a Tibetan monastery, before each element of the track slowly reveals itself and assumes its place. It’s an arrangement technique that Feel Fly employs masterfully, and gives the impression of a camera lens moving into focus, or a storyteller setting the scene. The revolving chord changes pull you in and while whisking you away, you’re compelled to engage with the moment - like being asked to dance by a mysterious stranger. The B side kicks off with Luce Eterna Ai Sognatori, still keeping the tempo high while cherry-picking disco house drum patterns and piano synths with a slight Italo flavor to create an irresistible slice of dancefloor dessert. This is a soundtrack for Sognatori, in whose dreams anything is possible. The EP finishes up with a superb cut of echoey balearic dub in the form of Templum Dub. Putting the drums through its mixing desk paces, Feel Fly reanimates the drum kit with delays, phasers and flangers, and wraps it up in hazy drifting pads that could accompany any moment of contemplation - from that morning espresso to a midnight phone call. Mediterranean Dreams Part 2 acts as the perfect compliment to its prequel Part 1, and shows a producer at the height of his powers, reimagining his musical roots and composing a love letter to the sounds and stories of his youth.

Honing your skills is under-appreciated in times of instant gratification and the continuous stream of music. Rotterdam-based producer Kofi The Unknown subverts this idea and took time for spiritual introspection, studying rhythms and sound production. Where being a late bloomer normally is seen as a sobriquet, the producer, composer and beatmaker wears it as a badge of honour and solidifies it as an honorary title by pinning it to his debut EP on Wicked Wax: The Late Bloomer. Wearing his heart on his sleeve, Kofi The Unknown shares his journey that led to The Late Bloomer, an emotional journey through sophisticated dance music, straight from the heart, aimed at the soul and feet.

Highly influential to Kofi’s sound and this EP is London’s Broken Beat scene. Syncopated drums, soulful chords and heavy bass lines work in tandem to emphasise the danceability the genre is known for. This is further solidified by the track Kofi released leading up to this release: One for Motet, an ode to the Broken Beat MC and Jazz Refreshed host Jason Hicks. The Late Bloomer further develops Kofi’s ode, but provides his Rotterdam flavour and brings his Hip Hop and Funk lineage into the mix.

Embrace Mistakes sets the stage for what’s to come in various ways. It is a textbook case of how dance music can tell a story and be introspective. Kofi’s honesty shines bright on the entire EP and strikes from the first kick drum on. It also shouldn’t be hard to recognise and feel the emotion the producer shares on the title track The Late Bloomer. The emotionally-laced chords and crushing drums are reminiscent of late nights at a warehouse or emotional sequences from a dystopian movie.

Staying true to his ethos ’exploring the university that music holds’, Kofi finds this beyond music production as The Late Bloomer provides an audible experience through creative mixing. Stuttering analog synths, enveloping leads, multiple percussion rhythms and off-beat snare rolls hit from all directions of the stereo spectrum, further underlining the sophistication of his merit. While the EP follows the Broken Beat accents on dance, it is an equally mindful listening experience.

Kofi The Unknown is a Rotterdam native producer with a knack for rhythms. His keen ear is informed by mentor and Dutch enigma Trian Kayhatu. While Kofi has taken the time to perfect his skills under the guidance of Trian, the two are simultaneously working on the exciting follow-up project to this debut EP. Anfang 2019 schloß sich Nicky Kompakt an und wurde fortan immer öfter nicht nur auf Kompakt Events, sondern auch im Line Up renommierter Festivals (u.a. Dgtl, Strafwerk) und Clubs gesichtet. Und wer erinnert sich nicht an die legendäre “Kompakt Pop Up Party“ im Oktober 2019 während des Amsterdam Dance Events, gestreamt live aus Nicky’s Wohnzimmer, wo sie gemeinsam mit Michael Mayer und Rex The Dog endgültig unsere Herzen im Strum eroberte?

Nicky Elisabeth lebt und arbeitet in Amsterdam und gehört zu den Resident-DJs von De Marktkantine, einem der etabliertesten Clubs der holländischen Hauptstadt und langjähriger Gastgeber von Kompakt Parties aller Art. Wer einmal eine dieser Parties dort erlebt hat, der findet viel von der besonderen Atmosphäre und dem druckvollen Sound dieser Nächte in Nicky’s Kompakt-Debüt 12inch “Celeste“.

Es liegt nahe, die beiden Tracks “Celeste“ und “Say“ wie eine Art liebevolle Hommage an den Kompakt-Sound der letzten drei Jahrzehnte zu interpretieren. Mit sparsamen Mitteln gelingt es Nicky ihren beiden Tracks ein Maximum an Energie und Catchiness zu entlocken, immer getragen von einem sicheren Instinkt für Breaks und dem richtigen Timing für kleine Eskalationen – etwas, was gute DJs einfach im Blut haben. Es geht am Ende immer um die Dramaturgie.

Die beiden Remixes des Titeltracks “Celeste“ aus den Händen der Großmeister Robag Wruhme und Roman Flügel sind nicht weniger “celestial“ (himmlisch) als das Original. Vor allem Robag Wruhme verleiht dem Stück in seiner Bearbeitung etwas wunderbar Schwebendes und Träumerisches, wie es ihm zuletzt auch auf seiner 12Inch “Yes/Calma Calma (kom EX 115) gelungen war. Roman baut hier und da kleine Dekonstruktionen ein, täuscht mal links, mal rechts an, um sich schließlich doch vom gutgelaunten Neunziger Jahre Vibe mitreissen lassen. Man kann es kaum erwarten, all dies endlich wieder auf der Tanzfläche erleben zu dürfen.

„Balearische Bibliothek“ is NIKLAS WANDT’s first release on ITALIC. An EP with four tracks - and after Erdtöne (Kryptox, 2020) only his second solo release under his own name. He, too, learned at the Düsseldorf Salon Des Amateurs, builds his pieces on American electro and Italian cosmic - in BPM numbers from the lower middle; and where he needs something, he picks it up: fearlessly even with Goa, fusion, radio voice or Krautrock electronics of the so-called Berlin School; only: Wandt sits behind the instruments, if he uses a sample, then on the micro level to build himself an instrument from it. The library is not a labyrinthine collage work, but a supple architecture of impression.

NIKLAS WANDT is no stranger. He is in demand in the younger Rhineland scene, especially as a drummer and percussionist. Most recently, he has released two albums with Jan Schulte/Wolf Müller on Growing Bin and an EP each with Sascha Funke in 2019 and 2020. He has played with Stabil Elite, and is currently working with Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge and Transport. In addition, he hosts the radio programme Jazz & World for Westdeutscher Rundfunk. Niklas Wandt lives in Berlin today.

Re-release of the record originally released on 2012-04-16! Like no other project originating from that stylistic jungle that became known as the Nineties, Terranova has shown a strong focus besides genre definitions, with studio members Fetisch and &ME being true wanderers between worlds and times, holding 2012‘s dance floor in a tight choke. There‘s certainly a bassdrum beating in their chests, and even the elegic strings from „Question Mark“, that beautifully sung intro to Terranova‘s latest album „Hotel Amour“, can barely hide a core made out of pure sweat and beats. The remixers assigned to „Question Mark“ saw that too, and that‘s why they don‘t try to reinvent the wheel but keep it rolling: KiNK adorns his rework with the massive, yet elegant boldness he‘s become known for, and one has a hard time imagining the „Tiger from Sofia“ sitting calmy in a chair while producing. Running around town with a big red „K“ on his t-shirt, we‘re convinced that KiNK is in fact a secret super hero saving crowds from desperation and ye olde rave from heavv traffic. He doesn‘t just produce, he kicks the ball out of the park on a regular basis. That‘s also where we meet Adam Port, noted for his unique take on raw hypnotic house and label fellow to &ME over at Berlin‘s infamous Keinemusik outfit. Just as KiNK, Adam didn‘t want to do without the original‘s bittersweet vocals courtesy of WhoMadeWho‘s Tomas Høffding, and - knowing his way around the house pretty damn well - wraps them in percussive bliss sure to have many an adventurer getting completely lost in sound. Italy’s AGENTS OF TIME have long been on the KOMPAKT radar. It started thanks to their exemplary releases on Correspondant and other labels such as Stem, Ellum plus last year’s collaboration with Mathew Jonson (from whom their name is inspired by). Michael Mayer had chance to play with them last summer at one of their Obscura parties and their friendship was cemented. Which leads us now to their five track KOMPAKT debut, entitled MUSIC MADE PARADISE. From our early days of releasing landmark tracks from JUSTUS KÖHNCKE, the label has never been shy of exploring the enigmatic fringes of disco in our own way. AGENTS OF TIME follow these footsteps but head into galactic territory with MUSIC MADE PARADISE. They continue their knack for bridging synth-wave with modern bass rhythms in a means which are purely designed for today’s dance floors. We’re proud to make their label debut with an incredible selection of music from this talented trio. French touch meets Italo chic on Drive Me Crazy. At first, My Heart is A Microchip comes across as a segue track, but opens into cascading synths and a predatory breakbeat to lead its own charge. Under Control is classy Moroder disco brought to the modern age. Aptly titled Interstate 10 is an EP highlight – the percussion lead is infectious and ready for prime time exploration.

The Empire Line unleash their demons on BAS009. When Jonas Rönnberg (aka Varg), Christian Stadsgaard (part of the Danish duo Damien Dubrovnik, co-founder of Posh Isolation) and noise artist Isak Hansen combine their musical vision, the result is sure to be radical. Claiming that „the nature of your oppression is the aesthetic of our anger“ right away in the title, the four-track EP sounds like it was recorded straight from a sweaty basement. Combining cascading rave tropes with noise, anger and punk, this release merges different underground currents. The result is a flamboyant, nevertheless harsh sound collage.

The story of Bella Boo is not one of overnight success, though of course it might appear as such, if you haven’t been somewhat embedded in the wonderful and weird world of Swedish club culture over the last 12 years or so, in which case you will know her as one of the most eclectic, informed and hardworking DJs on the scene. It wasn’t until last year’s Studio Barnhus debut, the Fire EP, that the world finally started talking about Bella’s extraordinary production skills – the record’s fuzzy r&b harmonics and snappy analog drums prompted Pitchfork to declare it “the flat-out dreamiest thing to come from the label yet”. This was followed quickly by boyboy, a universally beloved track on last year’s Studio Barnhus Volym 1 compilation, in which she “[drizzled] bluesy sweet nothings over elliptical scrapes and squelches, suggesting Matthew Herbert remixing St Germain” (Pitchfork again). Supervillain is Bella’s first solo release of 2019, a perfect three-track thing that sees the currently London-based artist continue to expertly straddle the fence between enigmatic dreamlands and groove-locked dance floors. Artwork by Stockholm visual artist and long-time Bella colla-Boo-rator Alexandra Karpilovski.

After their highly acclaimed debut album »Decadent yet Depraved«, Berlin and LA-based producers Belief Defect invited a variety of artists to join their »Remixed« project. The following 12” EP is a first four-track release of this project. The original tracks of the album are only an approximate starting point for »Remixed«. In contrast to »Decadent yet Depraved«, largely conceived in song structures, this EP is about transferring the pieces back into abstract space, and each remixer does it in his very own way. Alessandro Cortini’s one-take live recording is a lesson in classical ambient music. Telefon Tel Aviv’s remix is timelessly modern and extremely delicate sound design. Rather opposite concepts are coming from Surachai’s brutal pattern design and Kangding Ray’s expressive and analogously saturated repetitions for the dance floor.

La Fleur releases her new EP ‘Right Behind You’ via her own Power Plant imprint. The EP includes two tracks, ‘Circadian’, and the title track ‘Right Behind You’ - both showcasing La Fleur’s in-demand brand of groovy, vocal techno. The EP release marks the end of La Fleur’s busiest summer on record. A residency at Hot Since 82’s Labyrinth parties at Pacha in Ibiza, touring Brazil with the Watergate crew and remixing their new single from the mighty Sasha have lead to it being a season to remember. The title track, ‘Right Behind You’, features vocals from Austrian vocalist/songwriter Lula, who is best known for her distinctive work on Danny Tenaglia club classics like La Fleur favourite ‘Read My Lips’. La Fleur said: “Lula’s voice is special and distinct. Hearing her unique way of vocalising on favourite tracks of mine from back in the day (like Tenaglia’s ‘98 single ‘Read My Lips’ for example), I just felt I had to reach out to her. Creating ‘Right Behind You’ was a labour of love and we spent months working on it until we finally got to the definitive version.
