MLO’s ambient explorations began when Pete and Jon, having first met in rival punk bands during the late ‘70s, found themselves with unlimited access to an incredibly well-equipped studio, having been hired to produce an Icelandic pop star’s record in the early ‘90s. Particularly charmed by the Korg PS 3300 and an Emulator 2, Smith and Tye were also deeply fascinated by outer space and set about developing a musical landscape informed by both this new state of the art musical equipment and what lay beyond the Earth’s limits. Painting with a palette informed by classical minimalism, new age and the works of Cluster & Eno; the duos primary colours were drones, sustained tones, washes, calming tides, gentle temple bells and soft angelic voices with flickering glimpses of percussion and drums that hinted at the possibilities of a dance floor.

‘Oumuamua’ is a collection of music to get lost-in, a wander down the mazed, mirrored corridors of the subconscious. Peaceful, flowing, fresh-water patterns, drawing the listener toward a mediative, inner space. Not strictly ambient, rather the music rests temporarily within the boundaries between drum ‘n’ bass, library music, soundtracks and Techno. Or how Jon Tye himself puts it: “It really feels like music from a different place, a different time, made by different people.”

Following the reissue of the V-Neck EP Auto, Emote have sprung back to life with some lost DAT recordings of the band from the late 1990s. These semi live recordings made at the Spike Studios in Fulham where a back to basics project and a deliberate move away, from computer programmed music. The project was heavily influenced by the albums Drastic Season by African Head Charge and Get Up With It by Miles Davis. The tracks contain an array of random procession instruments ranging from African pianos to kitchen utensils, vintage synth tones and drones are provided by an Arp Odyssey and a Korg Ms-20 The tracks where then recorded on to a 8 track real to real Akai X-1810d By the time the delayed Dub Fiction album came out in 2000 the duo had decided to go their separate ways and the project was abandoned. Sit down in your comfiest jawn, strap those noise-cancelling jawns on and prepare for those jawns in your eye sockets to tumble out your head when you hear this collection of thumping jawns whipped up by Philadelphia’s BPMF. One half of legendary electro duo Synapse with John Selway (who he co-runs the equally-esteemed Serotonin imprint with), BPMF has been churning out no-nonsense electro smangers and experimental techno since the early 90s. Currently he holds the title of Eastern Pennsylvania’s premier live-PA electro dad while also running his own label, Schmer. Various Jawns is exactly that; four varied jawns packed on one plate. ‘Tell Mommy Bye’ is an electro ripper in the true American lineage while ‘Trunq’ and ‘J’pn’ are lighter, more noodling affairs. This plate’s entrée, ‘House of Jawn’, is a fourteen-minute knob-twiddling trip through the twisted fever dream of a raver long past. Thankfully our esteemed producer has given us a respite from the beatdown about halfway through. Drop the needle there to start the adventure at the Lower House of Jawn if brevity is your thing, man.

Roger Van Lunteren is an artist of enviable experience. For more than two decades the dutchman has been developing and perfecting his sound. After his first steps on Heimelektro Ulm in 1999, Van Lunteren has shown his talents on labels like 030303, Diffuse Reality and Something Happening, Somewhere. It is this knowledge, and his musical craftsmanship, that Van Lunteren draws upon for his debut on FireScope: Future Wounds. The EP is a veritable universe of delights. At either ends of the galaxy you’ll find two takes of the same piece. The textured “Stop (Sync In)” opens. Satellite bleeps bob on a flotsam and jetsam of pads as strings soar above hedged claps. “Stop (Original) flows in a beatless ambience, heady yet light and ephemeral. Coquettish and playful, “Spätzünder” is an altogether different entity. Dancing between braindance and house, this jam has all the spontaneity of a live track with flourishes of the silken-funk of Chicago. Clouds gather for “IRF4.” Haunted modulations and reel scratches lurk before a slow rhythm lumbers forth. Stalking through a moonless sky, the track is chillingly atmospheric with an undeniable lo-fi groove. Drums stagger and swell in the sweetness of “Coinc.” Bright and dreamy, the track cherry-picks from a spread of influences and sounds and is emblematic of the EP. Future Wounds is a constellation of Roger Van Lunteren’s music. From cheerful and innocent to shadowy and subtle, this quintet is a cross-section of this artist’s abilities. Rich and infinitely varied, five tracks to explore and return to.

This first release is made up of 3 tracks from my friends and 1 from myself. There’s no concept here other than putting out music that was otherwise not going to see the light of day. The first track is by Bleaker who put out a 12” on Unknown To The Unknown last year, the second by Miz aka Big Miz who’s been putting out music on Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, the third by The Burrell Connection who has a release on West End Communications and a track on a Craig Knows released compilation and the last track is from myself which got a play on Big Miz’s boiler room set.

These tracks were all sent to me around the same time and it felt right to make a place for them on a record. Bleaker, Miz and The Burrell Connection have all been making waves in Scotland and beyond and these 3 tracks are proof that the attention is warranted. And I don’t think my track is too bad either.

Part inspired by the prose of his favourite author James Baldwin, South Brooklyn's Korre 's experience of being a black man in America forms an integral part of his work, even if it's largely instrumental. "I always make sure my music has elements of pain, beauty, and darkness," says Korre in his bio. That vibe is certainly felt across his stunning debut EP for Utrecht's 030303 Records. 'End of Time' is a deep, dystopian piece of club music, as much suited for the floor as it is for the introverted mind. With virtually no intro, the listener gets sucked into the intenseness of the track right away. 'Crimson' is equally dark, filled with spooky vocal snippets and washed out acid sounds. 'Don't Wanna Wait' is a heartfelt ambient spacer, not unlike the eeriest work of Burial. 'Silver Exo' then is probably the best track on the record even if it's hard to pick a favourite. Korr? slowly brings the dancefloor back with this beautifully crafted builder, again filled with abstract vocal snippets. Closing this beast of a debut record is 'St Blues', consisting of a male monologue, captivating droney melodies and acid bubbles in the background. It's the conclusion of the first chapter by this artist we will no doubt hear more of in the future.
