“Billy Boy”, the title track of Modern Romance’s debut on LuLúxpo’s "Paradise Children Records" imprint is an atypical opener for a dance record. Its lackadaisical guitar work feels more like music made for a smokey dive bar in Tennessee or like it accidentally fell off the soundtrack of a lost Tarantino cut. But it’s a stunner nevertheless, the ideal companion to a lazy, hazy sunday. LuLúxpo’s remix is its club-ready counterpart. The label bosses dial down the rockabilly feel and add their distinct slow and sensuous touch. Cyphon Recordings continue their remarkable run of form with a brand new six track mini LP from Aussie powerhouse Ewan Jansen. With three decades of experience permeating his productions, Chroma Sea is a signature Jansen voyage - crisp, colourful, groove-heavy house and techno anchored by an analog weight.

A veteran of the scene, Jansen cut his teeth in the early '90s producing hardware-saturated house music drenched in depth and feeling. Having released on the likes of Moods & Grooves, Going Good, Freerange and Butter Sessions across the years, he’s also been captaining his own label Red Ember Records since 1997.

Leading the Chorma Sea odyssey is 'Salt Circuit', a squelching '90s tech house leaning track with a Detroit influenced touch, where bounce and power balance expertly with intricate synthwork and synapse-firing breakdowns.

'Brinewave' and 'Cybercanisco' follow, the former a head pickling, bass heavy, atmospheric electro joint. The latter a blinding yet blissful, Motor City channelling techno creation, that burrows deep down into your soul.

On the flip, 'Hydronexus' swallows you up in with a hit of absorbing space-age techno that envelopes your brain in layer upon layer of tactile sounds, before 'Faulty Gelfling' fires you out the other side into a twisted, robo electro hyperspace.

Closing out the release and bringing you back down to earth, 'Surabaya', where soft pads swell and oscillating synths wash over you, as that grooving low-end just keeps on rolling. The Chroma Sea release expertly illustrates Ewan Jansen's ability to craft a vibrant blend of house and techno that nods across the ocean to the US and Europe, yet grounds itself down under. Earthly and analog yet explorative all at once.

The story begins with an arranged marriage between Chinese Kung Fu student Ho Tao and Japanese Yumiko Koda who is highly-trained in Karate. Relentless arguing about which martial style and philosophy is better leads Koda to become offended, so she returns to Japan. “Foothills“ is a bright, sonic forcefield and its pulsating drums set the tone for a voyage of mixed emotions and self-doubt. Marital and cultural misunderstandings lead Koda’s former school in Japan to send seven of their strongest students to fight Ho Tao and prove which country has superior fighting styles. Mark is releasing a new EP called Integriert Euch Nicht. It features two tracks taken from his Berghain debut and a freshly-composed drum & bass missile. “Fucking Sick Of Myself Since Day One (Hot Desk Mix)” and “Hats Off To Herr. F” were first performed at Mark’s 2018 Berghain live set during Ostgut Ton Nacht. The former is a breakcore-adjacent call to arms for the self-loathing, the latter an antarctic shiver of predator- mode IDM-illektro. “Integriert Euch Nicht (Commercial Jump Up Mix)” features singing from Blackest Ever Black alum Silvia Kastel. Mark wrote the vocal parts with sine waves before Kastel recorded each tone individually, creating microtonal clusters in the vein of Luigi Nono. The sax-like sounds are Wilted Woman playing the aerophone, an electronic woodwind instrument. Otherwise, it's Mark's most deliberately straight ahead drum & bass track to date, trading the beat science of former releases for a stubbornly boneheaded approach in line with the title's message. Integriert Euch Nicht is something of a spiritual successor to last year’s tech/gentrification/real- estate-investment themed Integrier Dich Du Yuppie and a ruffer, more floor-focussed elaboration of the techniques tested on his unterton debut The Least Likely Event Will Occur In The Long Run. Under his Klon Dump alias, Mark has also previously released a psych-mnml double EP called Klon Dump Vs. The Open Air on A Colourful Storm and Two Rooms, a tape of sound art improv and knackered pop-strumentals on Bristol-based imprint NoCorner. When not playing solo, Mark also accompanies Blackest Ever Black’s Carla dal Forno on live electronics.

Optimo Music don’t generally do limited edition releases but when The Golden Filter did these extra mixes of “End Of Times”, the A1 track off their recent EP we thought they were too good to remain in the digital domain so have pressed up a small run of 12” singles aimed specifically at DJs. The original single version is a future synth classic. These new dub versions take it to the dancefloor and have been tried and tested around the world over the last few months. They are considerably extended, dubbed out and add extra dynamics & ecstatic synth power with hints of the original vocal. There is a slo mo version at 103 bpm and a faster version at 118bpm which means the track should work any time from warm up to peak set. There is also a Drone-Apella version included too.

Coletivo Vandalismo kick-start a new 12" series for the Contort Yourself label. Hailing from the city of Porto the duo also DJ under the name GAM and released their debut LP on Lake Haze's Eye For An Eye label. Their music has an immediacy that seems to stem from a background in live performance as opposed to polished studio sessions - an improvisational punk aesthetic that manages to carry this EP so strongly. Wild, crashing fx and unrecognisable vocal distortions layer atop wonky 90bpm drum machine grooves and the pair even show off what may be their turntablism skills on 'Zombie Zombie'. There's a nod to early concrete on the closing track 'Black Sun's Demise' with whirring, mechanical noise motifs suddenly jolting us into punishing gabber-at-33-minus-8 territory. The DIY spirit is alive and well here and the feeling that things could fall apart at any minute just adds to the tension.

naive's 20th release epitomizes what the Lisbon-based label, run by Violet, has become cherished for: imaginative yet timeless, soothing yet moody, melodic yet sonic music. Entitled 'Computer Hermetics', this new record is an EP by UrbnMowgli, a fairly new Berlin-based artist who began releasing music in 2020. The opening track, 'Fast Love Life', is a 145 bpm electro-bred, breakbeat-driven emotive dancefloor banger. It features menacing stabs juxtaposed with beautiful pads and acid-drenched arpeggio motifs that lend it a oneiric quality. 'Oracle Algorithm' picks up the 303 spirit and delves into trippier territories, densening the dreamlike, expansive atmosphere while infusing the record with electro-driven grit. Closing side A is 'Warschauer Rush-Hour', a futuristik, high-tempo twisted electro banger that's both tough and playful. 'Immaterial Desires' inaugurates side B--an ode to adventurous drum programming and intricate sound design in the form of a percussion-punctuated curveball belter. 'Digital Dawn' brings it all back home to the heart and closes the record with its deepest, most immersive moment, giving us big bass lines that alchemically converse with angelic bleepy melodies as if soundtracking a soulful sci fi movie that doesn't exist yet.
