The second edition of Dekmantel’s foray into the era-defining, trans-Atlantic, cult techno label that is Djax-Up-Beats, comes another re-issue of classic 90s cuts.
The label say "The Dutch label was responsible for releasing some of underground’s most foundational dance music, mixing together Chicago and European artists alike, and acting as the launchpad for some of today’s biggest producers. Featuring offerings from luminaries such as Felix Da Housecat, and Glenn Underground, alongside veterans such as Steve Poindexter, and DJ Skull, this second EP highlights the classic label’s old-school’s sound, while showcasing its diverse range, from dubbier, ambient moments, to wall-thumping, body crushing house force. Timeless music, repressed, and re-released for a new generation of DJs who covet the classic machine music.
The second re-issue EPs, offer a more introspective look at the label’s earlier releases. Leading Volume 2 is Terrace’s 'Bewitched', to which DJ Richard has described as being the defining track of the label’s beginnings with its "dreamy, Detroit-style techno mixed with the harder rave elements of Northern Europe”. Glenn Underground’s bass-roller 'Real Space' weaves together soulful passion and Chicago prime beats, while Felix Da Housecat’s Temptation — originally from 1993 — gets a well earned re-release, reminding us of the soulful, deep and lustful energy the producer once had. China White, whose name doesn’t get banded around as much as it should nowadays, see their ethereal hit 'Theme from the Underground' get another opportunity to bliss out the more upbeat rave community.
The energy turns darker with Frank de Groodt’s The Operator, breaking the outer-most barriers of electro-techno, with 'The Mind Strike'. Chicago and Dance Mania’s Steve Poindexter turns out rolling, dance-energy bomb 'Body Jam', while Mike Dearborn’s deliverance of unreal, dry techno in 'Deviant Behaviour' runs aplomb with classic drum-machine pulses, claps, and uncomfortable, yet punishing melodies. DJ Skull’s 'Don’t stop the beat' rides the EP with gushings of hand claps, and gentle, early 90s warm techno color, that transport you back to a time of more informed, and conscious electronic musings, a feeling that embodies Djax’s heyday.

Influenced by the social and political climate of the modern world, MOTSA’s debut album, ‘Perspectives’, is inspired by his acute awareness of modern society’s dependence on technology and the social media bubble also responsible for the civic polarisation seen globally. The 11 track album takes the listener on an emotional journey with dark, yet hopeful, detailed compositions, each representing their own personal story. The title “Perspectives” refers to a problem we all face: differing perspectives of the same situation, which in turn leads to conflict, be it in personal relationships, families and even political discussions globally. With individuals and groups often losing perspective in disagreements, MOTSA’s debut LP calls for more empathy, highlighting our current trajectory of an ego-driven society. Encouraging listeners to spend less time behind computer screens and more time outside in nature to broaden our horizons and reflect on human decisions, many of the album’s samples were recorded from MOTSA’s own environment. Using the sounds of children playing in the sand on a Balearic beach, crickets in the grass, or the ambient soundscapes of bells recorded from his father’s apartment in Moscow, the producer also recorded and sampled his own voice to create distant, choir-like melodies in many of the tracks. The artist’s signature sound – a soulful yet driven harmonic blend – continues to propel the multi-talented artist to the highest acclaim into 2019 and beyond.

One of the hardest thing as a musician is to maintain this naive, almost utopian and emotional approach to our music. Especially when it comes to a highly codified genre like Electronic music which appeared in the late 80s/early 90s like a promise of a bright future for music, everything sounding so fresh and revolutionary. When Katerina sent me those demos I heard that freshness, that pure intention, something I remember from discovering melancholic Detroit tunes in the 90s or early Warp ‘artificial intelligence’ compilations, bridging the gap between techno and more intricate electronica. It’s been a while since I didn’t hear an EP so sincere - and not Just nostalgic, that makes me want to dance alone in my living room and forget about everything else. Zru Vogue is a two man post punk avant-pop group from Palo Alto, California, combining the talents of Andrew Finkle and Rick Cuevas. The band began in 1980 as a four member group: Rick, Andy, Tom Sanders and Nancy Miller. Tom and Nancy left the group shortly after the first single, "Nakweda Dream", was released by independent San Francisco label Adolescent Records in February 1981. Inspired by rave reviews and heavy airplay on alternative radio stations, Andy and Rick went back into the studio, now as a duo, to record some new ZRU tracks. The self-tilted LP was released on the band's Zero Risk Records in 1982. It contains eight compositions blending African tribal and Middle Eastern rhythms, avant-garde rock, minimal electronics, and funk-rock guitars. The duo's sound is inspired by the art and anti-art movements of Dada and Surrealism. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Each copy is housed in a replica of the original jacket, which features artwork by the group members, and includes the original 2-sided lyric sheet.

This 7" double-header delves into the vast vaults of Bobby Orlando, a prolific New York producer whose muscular mutations of electro, Italo-disco, freestyle and Hi-NRG were popular in gay clubs around the globe. He specialized in "concept groups" - made-up acts fronted by session singers who were hired in to front the tracks he produced. Two of these concept acts are showcased here. On the A-side you'll find "Yum Yum (Eat 'Em Up)" by The Beat Box Boys, a stripped-back and slightly silly - but undeniably fun - electro workout from 1985. Mount Liberation Unlimited are Tom and Niklas, two Swedes from space who have spent the last 5 years carving out a particularly vivid niche in contemporary electronic music. Their previous work has seen them connect with an impressive list of global dance powerhouses: New York’s Beats In Space, Melbourne’s Superconscious and Munich’s Permanent Vacation have all released 12′’ heat from the duo, while their hometown buddies at Studio Barnhus provided an outlet for what has been perhaps their biggest and boldest release yet, 2017’s double smash single Double Dance Lover. Their live shows are fervent, fast-paced and very multi-instrumental affairs, performed non-stop at an increasingly prestigious list of clubs and festivals, serving as prime examples of the MLU boys’ core obsession: the interaction of human rhythm and electronic pulse.

The score fittingly winds its way through the trials and tribulations of this journey, blending minimal and harmonic rhythms, industrial funk, dreamy synthwave and transcendental techno into the rich tapestry of music that documents the ‘Return To Telepathic Heights’. The album features original artwork by Johnny Bruck, fully licensed, and taken from the legendary German science fiction novel series, ‘Perry Rhodan’, which ran weekly from the early 1960s, and was the most successful sci-fi book series ever written.

Multiple Man is comprised of twin duo Chris & Sean Campion. Originally operating from Brisbane, Australia their four track EP for Fleisch represents their first record written since Chris’s relocation to New York City. ‘High On The Hog’ finds Multiple Man at a disconnect. Spread between different continents and time zones, the record’s direction is a marked progression from previous sounds. Paranoid atmospherics, sheet metal percussion and unhinged mutant sampling, the record finds the twins wallowing in the muck and the mire. The junk funk is still there but it’s bathed in machine age voodoo. This is not a record for the post-apocalypse but an end of history banger for the psycho rollerball time we live in. Counting down every weird minute until the bombs drop, it represents a grotesque vision of end-times razorback EBM. Continuing the evolution in Multiple Man’s discography and contributing to the Berlin label’s vision, ‘High On The Hog’ throws another piece of meat into the Fleisch grinder. Territroy, the Greek duo of Panagiotis Melidis (Larry Gus / DFA Records) and Stathis Kalatzis (formerly Mr. Statik), release their first album Skulls & Plants on Dekmantel’s UFO label. A collection of experimental and spacious deep techno, psychedelic ambiance and compelling drums that draw you into a unique world of rhythmic sound and expect in DJ sets from Lena Willikens, Helena Hauff, and Vatican Shadow.
As starting point for their music the duo points at the AGET Heracles Cement Factory Plant in Volos, Magnesia. The factory is a metaphor that processes the land itself, ignites it in a cancerous way then dumps it into the sea and the atmosphere. It’s a combination of all possible scenarios of optimism and negativity, the essence of trying to do the best for everyone, but accidentally killing everyone in the process. That contrasting duality is mirrored in Territroy. What ties them is a constant rhythmic element that is persistent and comes from growing up in Greece and absorbing the rhythmic specificities of Southern Europe and unique Mediterranean attitudes.
