Joan Reggae Drummer, based in the region of Catalonia in Spain, is a great lover of Jamaican music, at a very young age he began to be so passionate about drums that he created his first musical projects, among them, the band that was a turning point was The Pepper Pots. With 6 albums already released and several tours in Europe, UK, Japan, USA & Czech Republic , Joan has opened for internationally artists such as Jimmy Cliff, Kymani Marley, Laurel Aitken, Derrick Morgan, Ticken Jahfakoli or The Pioneers among others. He performed at major festivals such as Summerjam Reggae Festival (Germany), Rototom Sunsplash (Italy), Primavera Sound (bcn), Rock For People (Czech Republic) or Sxsw (Austin, Usa).

Joan as a drummer has also worked with a lot of top international soul artists such as Curtis Mayfield's legendary band The Impressions, Eli "Paperboy" Reed, Maxine Brown, Binky Griptite from Daptone Records that has been in bands such as Antibalas, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, The Dap-Kings or The Mellomatics.

In 2020, after a time of musical hiatus due to the Covid, he began his more personal adventure, creating his own channel dedicated solely and exclusively to the world of drums in Reggae and Dub. Currently his Instagram channel has more than 34.000 followers and the content published has so much repercussion. First this major collaboration last year with Aston Barrett Jr for a special tribute to his uncle , Carlton Barrett (Bob Marley), one of Joan's favorite drummer. And at last all this work led him to record his first debut EP "dub Explosion" on the label Two Flames Records, a real explosion of DUB, where the common thread of the songs are drums.

JRD "dub Explosion" is a performance in the form of an EP, consisting of 4 instrumental Dub tracks with a totally different concept than what we are used to, since the songs were created from the drum beats.

Great musicians from different countries have participated in this EP: Guitar - Arturo Landaeta (Venezuela), Bass - Elie El Ossais (Australia), Keyboards - Ireneu Grosset (Spain), Nyahbinghi Drums - Maurici Bongo (Brazil), Trombone and Trumpet - Pablo Martín (Catalonia), Tenor sax - Tomy Muñoz (Catalonia), Bass - Miliu Llorach (Catalonia), Flute - Lluís Doménech (England), Bass - Joshua Jones (Jamaica), Keteh & Triangle - Aurel Cade (France), Trumpet - Glenn Holdaway (United States).

Finally, the production, mixing and dub was done by the musician and producer Ireneu Grosset, in the analogue studio of Dr. Dubwiser. It was quite an experience as the studio has a team very similar to what Jamaican producers had in the golden age of Reggae in the 70's.

Stefan Schwander aka A Rocket IN DUB has been producing electronic music in Düsseldorf since the mid-1990s. He releases under a variety of pseudonyms such as Antonelli, Repeat Orchestra, Rhythm Maker, Harmonious Thelonious and While My Sequencer Gently Weeps. His music draws influences from techno, disco music (especially Giorgio Moroder), new wave, dub, abstract electronica and African music. In 2002, he released "Rocket No. 3", an old-school dub house classic with a distinctive vocoder voice. 20 years later, he has re-recorded the track together with JAN Delay on vocals. Both musicians share a great passion for dub music. Jan's great voice is just as distinctive as the vocoder 20 years ago and adds a touch of humanity to the original. The collaboration is released as a limited 7" single with artwork by Hendrik Krawen.

During the eighties dancehall era, a number of record producers claimed to be the real authentic sound of downtown Kingston but Ossie Thomas’ Black Solidarity label, operating out of Delamere Avenue in the heart of the ghetto, was the real deal.

“Black Solidarity was a youth club in the Kingston 13 ghetto in a road named Crescent Road and it was a Rasta come up with the name Black Solidarity. But through the political violence a get high man start to spread rumours saying Black Solidarity a go gets guns to go kill off people and it’s a revolutionary Cuban thing we’re there ‘pon! A lot of people used to go away to Cuba and we called them brigadista. So, through it was in a PNP area man start spreading rumours saying the PNP a go plan to send the whole of Black Solidarity to Cuba and them all turn brigadista!

So, the rumours kinda mashed up the club! But we held on to the name and said, ‘we’ll give you a record label named Black Solidarity’. So, after that I talked to the Rasta who coined the words and he said, ‘I have to rate you’ and me say ‘why?’ and the man say, ‘Black Solidarity is a struggle and you realise that’ and me say ‘Yeah… me realise’. So, we take it up serious and deal with it and make it work! You know what I mean?” Ossie Thomas

There was no safe uptown haven to retreat to after work had finished but, after growing up in the deprived Kingston neighbourhoods of Denham Town and Jones Town, Ossie Thomas had nothing to be afraid of.

“This was the start of the seventies when the political rivalry got heated between the JLP and the PNP and the shots start fire… you know. Mum got scared and said she’s going to get a safer place for us to live so she moved up into the hills of St. Andrew… then six months after she died! Can you imagine that? She’d gone to the safest place and died there. From that me just go right back to Kingston… I said to myself ‘don’t be scared… if you’re gonna die you’re gonna die’. From that me not scared of Kingston… me just say to myself ‘my mother scared of Kingston and run and left Kingston’ but through me just live there all of my life on any street downtown me just feel comfortable.” Ossie Thomas

After almost a year waiting for the records, we finally present to you our new 7”, a new collaboration between Ojah and Hada Guldris.

The A side contains the track “Time To Be Ready”, featuring jazz singer Hada Guldris on vocals, who delivers wonderful melodies and harmonies paired with a strong message in the lyrics. It was recorded a few years ago at the same time as their previous collaboration “Life Is Better When You Smile” that came out on this label in 2017 (aldbs7004).

On the B side we find the track “Dub To Be Ready”, a trippy and introverted instrumental dub version full of effects and modulations, mixed live by Ojah on his analog board.

Hand-stamped and served in a thick custom reversed kraftliner sleeve. Produced by Ojah, recorded at Alchemy Dubs Studio, London. Dragon Dance is the third release by Twin Cities Sound System duo, Feel Free Hi Fi following the Prophet Noir EP and a split 12” with Kingston's Equiknoxx in 2021. Dragon Dance's instrumentals pick up where Prophet Noir left off. The dark dystopian industrialism of Prophet Noir remains present in Dragon Dance but in lieu of a dancehall influenced approach, Dragon Dance leans into the duo's love of foundation UK steppers and dub history. The blend of deep and subtle textures create tracks that are both heavy and minimal. Dragon Dance is another glimpse into Feel Free Hi Fi's uneasily defined musical vision.

Apichat Pakwan is a Dutch-Thai band based in Amsterdam. Their music is a mix of morlam, electronic music, dub and hiphop. They perform with their own compositions, as well as with new interpretations of classic Thai and Lao folkmusic repertory. The music collective was founded in 2015 by Dutch musician Olivier Schreuder (electronics, compositions, traditional Thai instruments) and Thai musician Angkanang Pimwankum (percussion). They compose and perform with an alternating group of musicians from the Northeast region of Thailand, also known as Isan. The group was called "most innovative molam hybrid" by The Bangkok Post.

Contains Extensive Booklet, With Jeff Mao Detailing Gardiner's Career And The 70s Jamaican Music Industry. Unpublished Photos And Ephemera. 1970s Jamaica suffered an unprecedented stretch of political turmoil and violence, and as the country’s economy and morale collapsed, reggae and its offshoots exploded worldwide. Boris Gardiner enjoyed great success leading bands, issuing albums that mixed reggae, ska, soul and funk, and collaborating with the likes of Lee (Scratch) Perry and Herman Chin-Loy in their legendary studios and playing on hundreds of records. So many that he lost count. Sometime around the issue of his Boris Gardiner Happening Is What’s Happening album - a Loft classic, with David Mancuso favoring Gardiner’s take of Booker T. and the MG’s “Melting Pot” at his legendary gathering - and his soundtrack to Every N----r Is A Star, famously sampled by Kendrick Lamar and used as the introduction to the film Moonlight, two albums - Ultra Super Dub Vols. 1 and 2 - credited to The Boris Gardiner Happening - two albums so obscure that for the longest time Boris wasn’t even aware that they existed. Following classics such as King Tubby’s Dub From the Roots and Augustus Pablo’s King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown, Miami-based Alty East’s Ultra Records took instrumentals Gardiner created for a run of 45s, and created and issued these compilations of dubbed out originals and JA renditions of songs by Otis Redding, Clarence Carter, Betty Wright, Jimmy “Bo” Horne and Ultra label-mate Frankie Zhivago Young. Released in tiny runs in handmade, silkscreened, paste-on covers, they have become some of the most sought after Jamaican albums. Jackie Edwards voice can be heard on hundreds of Ska, R&B, Soul, Rocksteady records. In fact, all the incarnations that reggae revolved into. He was at the birth of Island Records and his distinctive soulful voice has rightly given him the moniker of the original Cool Ruler.

Jackie Edwards (b Wilfred Edwards, 1938, Jamaica) was a renowned singer from the early days and by 1959 had presented future Island Records owner Chris Blackwell with two outstanding tunes. The first a sentimental ballad ‘Your Eyes Are Dreaming’ and a Latin-Beat tune ‘Tell Me Darling’. His song writing skills were in much demand and his popularity of such importance that when Chris Blackwell went to London in 1962 to set up his future record company Island Records, he took his top balladeer with him. This was to pay dividends when a UK group Blackwell had signed the Spencer Davis Group released two of Jackie Edwards compositions “Keep On Running’’ and “Somebody Help Me’’. Which topped the British Charts in 1966 and were important early cornerstones in the future success in the Island Records story.

We have compiled some of Jackie Edwards finest tunes including his own version of the fore-mentioned big hit “Keep On Running’’, the sublime “Who Told You So’’ , “Get Up’’, the cutting edge ‘’Johnny Your A Gun Man’’ and the title track to this album “Peaceful Man’’ which we named him after. All great tunes in different reggae styles but all sung to perfection.

DJ Sotofett remakes of the debut LP (Content To Write In I Dine Weathercraft, 1983) from Irish post-punk producer Stano. A whole load of styles on this one. TIP!

How this record came about has been lost a bit to the midst of (recent) time, back in 2018 when we repressed "Content to Write in I Dine Weathercraft" the 1983 debut LP of one of Ireland's more enigmatic musical characters - we slid it the way of the versatile Norwegian polymath who suggested a remix, which quickly became two and soon ended up a full suite. We put it aside for a bit, became a bit longer, then the artwork - pieced together by the Sex Tags boss himself cutting up features from Irish fanzine Vox - and the general lag of production in the post covid world and here we are the guts of 5 years later!

A member of the legendary punk / post-punk group The Threat which disbanded after lead singer Maurice Foley disappeared to join the Hare Krishnas, Stano set up his outsider stall early on. The Threat had Stano on synths, one of the first female bassists in Deirdre Creed and their debut single was produced by progressive trad musician Donal Lunny of Planxty. His solo career of improvised electronic music continued in this vein of the unexpected – sitting outside both the country’s mainstream and alternative rock scenes. Eschewing both live performance and the spotlight for studio collaborations for this LP he worked with a number of Irish musicians - Roger Doyle, Daniel Figgis and of course Michael O Shea.

This remix pack kicks off with the drum machine exotica funk of "Room" and runs the gamut of 80's pop experimentation via the new wave dream pop of "Emma Wild", dubbing out the haunted house vibes of "Seance of Klondalike", adding some menace to the gothic feel of "Melting Grey", stretching "Out of the Dark, Into the Dawn" into a skrangled baleric dubby house jam and closing it out adding a hypnotic repetitive punch to O'Shea's beautiful timeless playing on "A Dead Rose".

Mysticisms keeps the Dubplate series moving, welcoming one of the seminal Dub producers of all time in Scientist. His unique studio techniques and understanding of rhythm are exalted and present on Step It Up, an enlightening example of his genius and matched with a widescreen remix by label associate Djn4, aka DJ Normal 4, teaming up with fellow Dusseldorf producer AKI AKI, to offer a dreamland breaks-steppers anthem. The fact that Hopeton Overton Brown aka Scientist is one of the true pioneers of Dub music is undisputed. His productions, first as an apprentice at Studio One, then breaking through whilst teamed at King Tubby's studio, led to Channel One and a series of seminal Dub masterpieces throughout the 1980s, mixing engineer Henry 'Junjo' Lawes' productions with the Roots Radics, alongside vocalists Barrington Levy, Jonny Osbourne and Jah Thomas.

Step It Up precedes, taken from the period of seminal Tubby's work with Bunny Lee and in this instance, with Barry Brown classic vocals and Lee's house band, The Aggravators, backing. As often with Reggae's history, much is disputed, however, this unmistakable Scientist production showcases Brown's high pass filters in effect, the trademark riding 4/4, utilising the 4 track mixing desk to create a joyous bounce.

Working on the license from the outset, Tim Schumacher aka Djn4, waited in the wings to dive in the desk for a modern-day remix. Partnering with up-and-coming producer Aki Vierboom Phaserboys / Candomble), the Digi-Dance MixX is bass-quaking histrionics, a steppers meets rave culture overdose that will be heard from festivals to dancehalls, a righteous dub-breaks riddim y'all.

Delroy Wilson was one of Jamaica's most soulful vocalists, and over a 40-year career the singer unleashed a flood of hits and a multitude of masterpieces. Born on October 5, 1948, in the Kingston neighborhood of Trenchtown, Wilson's phenomenal talent would be his ticket out of the ghetto, and his discovery by producer Coxsone Dodd in 1962 would change the path of Jamaican music. Released on Big Shot in 1973 and produced by Bunny Lee, 'Captivity' is one of the true classics from Delroy's discography, back on vinyl for the first time since its original release.

»Vertigo Dubs Vol. 2: Elijah Minnelli« is the second in a series of 10inches accompanying The Notwist’s current album »Vertigo Days«, and will present new versions of some of its tracks.

Elijah Minnelli is a radio presenter for Soho Radio and Radio alHara. His varied musical tastes inform a production style that merges disparate influences with contemporary bass music via a dubwise tradition. For this second volume, Minnelli reinterprets both »Al Sur (featuring Juana Molina)« and »Exit Strategy To Myself«. The former is spun into an ethereal cumbia-inspired yarn, while the latter opts for dubbed-out sparseness in a dancehall framework.

The Vertigo Dubs are a continuation of The Notwist’s collective approach that led to »Vertigo Days«, while offering new access to the album’s songs.

The idea for this LP was originally floated in 2018 and was intended to be a 6 track EP called ‘Songs for my father’. However, once Ghetto Priest got in the studio, the idea expanded as he went the extra mile adding his personal favourites, conjured up from childhood memories of his father’s tunes being played on the family radiogram with additions from his youthful excursions. A magical mixture of tracks associated with the greats – Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Slim Smith, Ken Boothe, Aaron Neville – ‘Big People Music’ can lay claim to being the 21st century’s equivalent of John Holt’s ‘1,000 Volts of Holt’ – an absolute essential on every Blaupunkt radiogram on a Sunday and a blues party staple. Released in the UK as part of Brooks’ ‘One Love’ album in the early 1980s, ‘No War Over Woman’ was originally recorded at Channel One around 1975, with musicians apparently including Sly & Robbie rhythm section, Ansel Collins on keys and Deadly Headley on saxophone, and mixed at King Tubby’s. It is arguably the first time it gets issued as a 7’’ single including a version on the flip side. Extra tip: roots fans will recognise the riddim from Knowledge’s monumental ‘Stumbing Block’, which appeared on the Tamoki Wambesi label.

Love & Fire is the seventh full-length studio album from the multi-platinum selling reggae hybrid band The Black Seeds. It was developed over the past few years, beginning with a series of creative sessions in 2018 at the band’s creative incubator The Surgery in Wellington, New Zealand.

The original plan was to then do a classic “band in a room recording,” which got thrown out the window once the pandemic hit and lockdowns began. At that point, the group got creative, working remotely between various home studios of the band members, and the result is as strong a record as they’ve ever done, managing to capture the feelings of the past few years in a cohesive set of new songs.

The Black Seeds continue to evolve musically while defying expectations, yet still always seem to sound like no one else but themselves.

"Grammy-winning outfit Black Uhuru is one of the most known and beloved reggae bands of all times. The group was formed in 1972 in Waterhouse, Kingston. Initially known simply as ‘Uhuru’ (the Swahili word for ‘freedom’) it was formed by the likes of Garth Dennis, Don Carlos and Duckie Simpson. But it wasn’t until 1977, when Errol Nelson and Michael Rose joined Duckie to replace Carlos and Dennis, that they started to build a solid reputation both in Jamaica and the UK with a stream of now legendary albums. African Love is part of Black Uhuru’s debut album ‘Love Crisis’, produced and mixed by Prince Jammy in 1977. The somehow ‘raw’ production quality of this early versions allows the listener to sink into the band’s unmistakable talent."

We are happy to unveil a new collaboration with prolific Jamaican singer and producer Mike Brooks. Born in the Westmoreland parish in the early 1950s, Mike Brooks’ journey in music kicked off around the legendary Channel One studio where he was involved with Lloyd Park’s Skin Flesh and Bones band for some time, before devoting himself to singing and producing, mainly through his own ‘Teams’ label.

Originally released in 1988 ‘Hot Rock’ was the final single from Pennsylvanian based roots reggae band House Of Assembly. The band, comprising main songwriter Norman Bailey, Marc Campbell, Claver Campbell and Louis Putman, grew up in the Water House area of Kingston, Jamaica bonding over their shared love of Dub & Reggae. The 4 members moved to Pennsylvania in the US in the early 80’s and released one album ‘Confusion’ on the local Meadowlark label, touring throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and becoming stalwarts of the Pennsylvanian roots scene.

The band started their own Concrete label in 1988 releasing ‘Hot Rock’ complete with a Dub Version possessing a potent combination of punchy 707 drum programming, killer rolling bassline, stripped back lead guitar and a rising synth line. For the official reissue there’s an added ‘Rockapella’ version not found on the original 12” and a new full sleeve jacket designed by Bradley Pinkerton.

'In Session' is the debut album from UK dub producer Mali-I released on None More Records. Mali-I is Mali Baden-Powell (Z Lovecraft / Rhythm Section / Monzanto Sound).
Huey Morgan, Don Letts and Jamz Supernova have played singles 'Heaven Sent' and 'This Place' on BBC 6music and 1extra, with regular airplay across NTS, Wwfm and Kcrw stations.
The album draws on Mali-I's deep love of UK dub and the likes of sound system innovators such as The Bug, Wackies and Channel One, but brings in contemporary London sounds via his long time affiliation with London party and label Rhythm Section. The Silvertones were steeped in the grand tradition of Jamaican vocal trios along with other greats such as The Heptones, The Abyssinians and The Kingstonians. Formed in 1964 by Delroy Denton, Keith Coley and Gilmore Grant, the group recorded under a variety of names in the ska and rocksteady era for Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle and Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One, before hooking up with producer Lee “Scratch” Perry. Originally released in 1973, The Silvertones’ debut Silver Bullets was recorded at Perry’s Black Ark studio with vocal tracks captured at King Tubby’s Dromilly Avenue studio in a marathon, all-night session. While firmly planted in roots reggae, Silver Bullets’ dense harmonies and relaxed vibe harken back to rocksteady. The album marks an interesting point in Jamaican music where the past and the future are visible in the grooves of a single LP—from classic rocksteady-tinged love songs like “That’s When It Hurts” and “Rock Me In Your Soul” to the Rasta anthem “Rejoice Jah Jah Children.” Antarctica Starts Here presents the first widely available domestic release of Silver Bullets.
