Techno isn’t a genre that has birthed many consistent albums, and the dub techno subgenre even less so, but one indisputable classic is Porter Ricks’ debut ‘Biokinetics’. Originally issued on the legendary Basic Channel sub-label Chain Reaction in 1996 following a trio of 12″s, ‘Biokinetics’ was the first of the label’s album releases, and still stands as its crowning achievement. Porter Ricks are Thomas Köner and Andy Mellwig, and between them they re-framed the techno sound, imbuing the spacious ambience pioneered by label bosses Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald with a frosty, isolated experimental bent, and combining it with the sort of haunted minimalism of early Plastikman. What separated ‘Biokinetics’ from other albums at the time was its unwavering narrative - the exact sound has been interpreted countless times since, but the immersive qualities of this singular record have rarely been touched. Maybe it is down to the silvery underwater concept that ties each track together - the bubbling pads, sub-aquatic basses and muffled kick drums. But as with any great album, it’s hard to exactly put your finger on what makes it a classic. Simply put ‘Biokinetics’ is one of the most important records in the genre and one of techno’s finest albums. It has been re-released ten years ago by Type Records, and now Mille Plateaux is celebrating Porter Ricks’ and Biokinetics’ 25th anniversary with this sumptuous double viny edition.

Following up to Rob Belleville's inaugural delivery, Fluid Electronics returns in 2021 with a new collaborative EP courtesy of Dutch veteran Jarno, the man behind Trouw's infamous Below evenings, and Fluid Electronics' co-founder and owner Shirazi, back in full swing after a ten-year break from production. The EP features remixes from Amsterdam's Love Over Entropy and seminal Rotterdam-based duo, Duplex. The A-side finds Shirazi and Jarno dishing out a vaporous dub with the focus track, "Late Night Thoughts". Engineering a mix of reverb-drenched atmospheric techno laced with hedonistic house accents and mystique-imbued melodies on a dreamy tip. Upping the tempo and overall vibe of the track, Love Over Entropy's remix propels its listener in a blazing corridor of synth arpeggios and luminous chords. The flip side sees Shirazi go solo on the ethereal "Continue Learning", all in evocative spaciousness and textural finesse, as it merges the immersive depth of Basic Channel-esque envelopes with further straightforward floor dynamics. Clone-affiliated duo Duplex provides a tighter, jacking match to the original's vaster headspace, tweaking it into a proper clinical club-ready weapon.

Irenic's Roger Gerressen takes care of another release on the main label. This EP is all dub, featuring tracks for the dancefloor, tracks to play at home and an older track from the vaults, found on RG's 2009 harddrive.

A killer but hard-to-find track, In Love was originally released on the highly respected Smallfish Records as a limited 500 12in: the current asking price on Discogs is around £100. Now, In Love is re-released with some excellent additions as a new 4-track 12in EP 300 limited run. Four tracks that mix Techno/Deep House groove with rock-solid bass, Spaced-out Dub, Detroit and Acid influences, all uniquely Vertical Cat. In Love is a deep spacious roller with a delicious bassline and dubbed-out fx. Snow Creatures is deeper still, more Electro but still solid and spaced-out as f. Moss is a Detroit Techno masterpiece with Drexciya-tinged melodies and acid bass. You Shocker! concentrates the Acid with sweet beats and dubbed daft vocal cuts. Following the success of last years Babe Roots EP, Echocord revisits the package with reworks from Forest Drive West, Mike Schommer, Felix K, DB1 and Babe Roots themself. London’s DB1 leads the package with his take on ‘Work Hard’, a mostly beatless interpretation fuelled by oscillating white noise, winding dub chords and snippets of the original’s dub reggae vocals. Hidden Hawai’s Felix K then ups the energy levels with a high-octane take on ‘Sufferation Time’, driven by upfront, shuffled and distorted drums and unfaltering, tension building dub swells.

Pitch Black’s Futureproof, a landmark in New Zealand electronica, finally gets a vinyl release 23 years after it first came out. The album distilled two years of relentless touring of New Zealand into a sweeping colossus full of epic soundscapes and rumbling basslines, pounding rhythms and mind-bending effects, showcasing Pitch Black’s dubwise styles to full, bass-bin busting effect.

Following on from the success of 2020's 'Inside' EP on Livity Sound and previous releases on UK labels Cong Burn and Blank Mind, Manchester's Lack returns to Livity Sound with a brand new EP of hybridised and dubbed techno cuts. “I wanted to try and create a sense of space or calm within the tracks, even if only subtle. I suppose it was a reflection on the crazy state of the world and needing to find space within myself to stay grounded and get through it”. From the deep bass and irresistible skank of Grapefruit to the rapid yet ice cool propulsion of Microshift and the spacious yet energised rhythms of Make It Circular and Constant, this new record further explores Lack's fractured techno aesthetic, skilfully joining the dots between broken dub techno and vintage dubstep. Livity Sound is a label set up by Peverelist in 2011 as a vehicle for a raw and exploratory strain of UK techno, rooted in the heritage of UK dance music and sound system culture. It has since become one of the UK's foremost protagonists for cutting edge underground electronic music.

Prana glistens into existence as ethereal pads drift by, giving way to a subtle, almost deep house beat that pulses nicely, backed by tribal-esq percussion. A gently staccato synth pattern flutters in and out toying with the idea of techno ever so slightly yet keeping well within the realms of his usual sound. Simplicity is the key in this track and Deepchord allows it to evolve slowly and he toys with sweeps of reverb and FX giving the track a lush, organic sound.

Tantra gives off a tougher vibe than it predecessor. Gently layered, deeper, edgier synths open the track as percussive elements, swathed in FX form the basis of the groove. Bolstered by a typical Deepchord dubbed out bass line this track once again evolves perfectly almost without the listener noticing the subtle changes that give Tantra a deep and emotive flow.

Never one to sit still and be pigeon holed into a genre, Deepchord easily turns his hand once again a brings two beautifully crafted tracks in his own inimitable style

Berlin based producer Stojche showcases three unique dub-rooted tracks with amazing vocals by Rootsman I on his first installment on Kontakt. Limited Colored Vinyl.

Vade Mecum returns with yet another amazing release by Matt & Mark Thibideau. "We dedicate this record to our late friend Mike Huckaby and his love for the Waldorf Wave synthesizer. Mark and I met Mike Huckaby back in the mid 90?s and instantly connected over our love of synthesizers, producing Techno, Deep House and Dub Techno. We performed together at parties throughout the 90?s and 2000?s. It was always a dream for us all to work with the Waldorf Wave. Mark and I both had experience using their other wavetable synthesizers. One day we received a surprise call from Mike, he had purchased the Wave. Mike wanted to complete an EP that he used the Wave to make all of the sounds. He started some ideas and drove the Wave up to our studio in Toronto to complete and mix the ideas with us. ?My Life with the Wave? was born. Mike continued this project to include an elaborate collection of samples that he made of his patches. We were shocked to learn of Mike?s passing and wanted to do something to keep the love and passion of his music alive. Transfer is a project that utilizes some sounds from the Waldorf Wave collection along with some of the other Waldorf synths Mike also enjoyed working with (Microwave, XT and Blofeld). Heavy, mutant dub pressure from Joachim Nordwall as The iDEALIST, leading down the path from a cracking album, mixtape, and Genesis P-Orridge-starring outing already in 2019. Faithfully brought to life with mastering by Jack Callahan ov Sunburned Hand Of The Man and Bánh Mì Verlag esteem, The iDEALIST’s 2nd 7” sees him knuckle out two minimalist, monotonic steppers that fall in the gulf between dub, noise and Pan Sonic-like techno purism.

The second release on Lempuyang comes courtesy of Tomoki Tsukamoto. In the late 90s Tomoki put out releases on Gez Varley's G Records, i220, and of course ran his own Metrojuice Records imprint; putting out some of the most sought-after deep & dubby techno records under his alias W-Moon. After a hiatus of over 20 years he now returns with four new tracks under his own name, still retaining that deep signature sound.

With his third single release, Y-Bayani (pronounced like Why-Bayani) shows clearly that he is the most intriguing roots-reggae sensation coming out of Ghana. He is backed again by the lushly grooving Band of Enlightenment, Reason and Love.
Asembi Ara Amba, sung in Fanti language, is an old Fanti story about having bad luck if you see a vulture up in the sky. As Y-Bayani sees one suddenly and for no reason he gets in trouble with the police. Being hold back in the police station he finally takes his chance to escape into freedom while the police men taking a nap.
On We Are The Band of Enlightenment, Reason And Love the group presents their personal anthem. The song is a cinematic journey starting with a mighty horn theme, followed up by a mantric chant and enters finally into a wall of sound in double time. It's a small symphony for sure.

Maayan Nidam's launches her new imprint with a four tracks release from the ever-elusive Hubble, presenting deep and heavy sound esthetics we grew to expect from the intriguing producer as well as from Nidam's distinct preferences when curating her dj sets. The record begins with a promise to a spiritual journey, arriving to full expression on the second track. The flip side returns to the body with a primal groove that explores movement in personal space, fantastically growing to the firm and definite steps of the forth and final track on the EP.

The Equations Collective is an experimental sound project formed by a multi-disciplinary group of artists, active in the fields of music, photography, sound design & software development.
In 2018, the collective set up a temporary outdoor recording studio, 1130 meters above sea level, on the slopes of Mount Helicon in Greece, with the ambition of recording their work in a natural environment. A 'mobile and modular' construction, fully powered by solar panels, the design of the studio showcases the possibilities of a progressive, environmentally sustainable future through renewable energy.
Embodying ecological incentives, and representing an immersive engagement with the landscape, the 'Helicon Sessions' document this extraordinary residency, capturing a profound dialogue with the eponymous mountain region.
Situated in Boeotia, Central Greece, Mount Helicon has a prominent archaic significance. A historic location where stories of sacred springs and the epic origins of the Muses and Narcissus converge. Steeped in the heritage of ancient narratives, Helicon is seen as a principal symbol of poetic inspiration.
On the 'Helicon Sessions' the collective draw upon the inspiring topography and fabled mythological resonances of the area, unfurling an expansive, hypnotic suite of abstract electronics. Liberated by an open-ended, improvisational dynamic, the collective move through a mysterious, elemental cycle that mirrors the imposing scale and dramatic atmospheres of the setting.
Across an entrancing, fluid sequence of five designated 'cuts', the collective traverse the borderlands of drone, techno, dub, and acid, amplifying the acoustic traces of Helicon by integrating field recordings collected at the site into this arresting body of work. With these recordings, the collective delineate an odyssey of subverted 303s, sputtering drum machines and formidable, oscillating low end that drifts and coalesces like an amorphous mirage; a spellbinding sound world of clarity and shadow.
The 'Helicon Sessions' signify a symbiosis (between the terrestrial and the engineered, between wildlife and futurism, between the intrinsic and the synthetic, between the innate and the manmade) And with their conception of a portable, eco-friendly studio The Equations Collective focalize valuable ideas centred on ingenuity and evolution. The outcome of this project illustrates a unique collaborative exchange which acknowledges the deep nuances of environment and the enduring echoes of history.
The Equations Collective is a collaboration between Artefakt, Aroma Pitch, Aphelion and Sphera De Noumenon across Berlin, Amsterdam, Cologne and Hamburg. Together they have established an all night long live event in Berlin, starting at Sameheads and Acud Macht Neu, which eventually lead to their residency at OHM (Tresor).
For this format they have collaborated with the following artists: Alex The Fairy, Anna Z, D-ix, Eliad Wagner, Jón Friđgeir Sigurđsson, Orson Wells, Phillip Jondo, Philipp Matalla, Prsmc, Rabih Beaini, Sabrina Gricourt, Sébastien Robert, and Vida Vojić.
The respective members of The Equations Collective have released a range of output on the likes of Field Records, Delsin, Semantica Records, De Stijl, & Soul People Music.

Polyverse is the new debut album of the very exciting and fresh sounding Kosmogonik. Nine driving and atmospheric tracks that vibrate all the way from heavyweight techno to cosmic ambient.

Jochem Peteri comes drifting back into earshot with some new Nwaq tackle in tow. Beyond the plentiful reissues of his timeless earlier works, Peteri is just as productive in the here and now. Now he’s minting a new label with three pieces that embellish the Nwaq soundworld with a fresh slant. ‘Above II’ is a crystal clear beam of light strapped to a kick that trips over itself with grace and poise. It’s forthright and yet wholly untethered, a pre-echo for the anchorless expanse of ‘Above I’, which buries some heavy bass ruminations very far down in the mix. That leaves it to ‘Dume’ to come staggering out all bleary-eyed, caked in last night’s distortion and yet still exuding a cracked beauty that stands up to the first light of dawn. The artwork which adorns this record is by environment sculpting internet artist Jan-Robert Leegte. Nwaq has always stood for a kind of environmental immersion, and this new emission compounds that idea in three distinct, refreshing ways.
