Dispatch Dubplate makes its long-awaited return with the first of six new releases, brought to you by Mako - including a collab with Ben Soundscape.

Setting out to champion the best in unreleased music and those tunes which have been long cherished dubs by prominent figures within the dnb community, Dispatch Dubplate returns after an almost two year break with this special release from Mako. Heading up the release is "The Man", a tune that Ant TC1 has been playing for years and could never put down. One that prompted constant ID requests from DJs and ravers alike, this tune fully represents the Dispatch Dubplate ethos due to the mystery and hype surrounding the track. Originally made as an experiment, with Mako wanting to focus on crusty sounding production with no mid bass or prominent fog horns - it's a back to basic track that celebrates the raw energy of drum and bass. After much email wrangling and WhatsApp based arm twisting we're pleased to finally get this stand-out track out there.

The Dispatch Dubplate series makes vinyl the focus, and each release features an exclusive track that will never be sold digitally. "Mission Critical" champions our favourite format on this release with a loop based roller dreamt up on a hazy, stoned day. Originally forgotten about by Mako himself, this one was championed by Mikal (and Ant of course) and has now found its way out there thanks to Mik's love and appreciation.

Completing the release is a collab with Ben Soundscape, Mako's personal favourite of the three. Utilising some drums from another tune called "Tell Me Something" released by Mako on Metalheadz, the pair set out to make something new. Originally signed by the late, great, Marcus Intalex for Soul:R it was eventually swapped out for a different tune of Mako's - this makes it another perfect fit for Dispatch Dubplate, given the love and following it created during live sets but never saw the light of day (until now). A welcome return to this fabled series, watch this space for more.

Nziria, the new experimental project by artist Tullia Benedicta, debuts on Gabber Eleganza’s imprint Never Sleep with a full-length titled Xxybrid. Recorded during a period of worldwide lockdown, the album represents the artist’s psychomagic act to redeem their Neapolitan origins and to reinterpret some of the topoi of the Neapolitan culture. Nziria integrates the main forms and themes of the Neomelodic song, while regenerating the cis-heteronormative scenario. Through a powerful and androgynous singing, they reinterpret the stereotyped, almost archetypal stories of the Neomelodic genre, welcoming narratives of the Lgbtqi+ community and singing of queer love and mercurial identities. Through the album, Nziria re-appropriates the Neapolitan dialect, which they learnt from their grandparents: the word itself, 'nziria, is an almost untranslatable dialect word, indicating the obstinate and unprovoked tantrum of children when they’re tired. Neomelodic music, a genre stemming in the mid-Seventies, became a distinctive sound of Southern Italy with the voices of artists such as Nino D’Angelo and Gigi D’Alessio. Being intrinsically linked to illegal practices of divulgation, this genre narrates social collapses and emotional possessivity through hyper-sentimental lyrics and lightweight pop atmospheres, mostly enacting standardised and discriminative patterns. Hard Neomelodic is the term chosen by the artist to describe their quest, generating a sonic space in which disruptive tonalities such as those of the Neomelodic and Hardcore are combined to celebrate hybridity as an arena for unrestricted self-determination. As a non-binary artist, Nziria draws from their experience to tackle borderless concepts such as those of otherness, diversity and inclusivity. Their quest in metamorphosing heteronormative and discriminative narratives of Neomelodic applies to the restless battle against genre discriminations, often rooted in Western society. Nziria coats the vivid Neapolitan realm populated by pagan symbols, theatrical characters, chimerical figures such as that of the Femminiello, sacred effigies, hyperbolic beliefs with sophisticated sonic avant-garde, inspired by the Hardcore Gabber, Trance and Italodance 2000 tonalities which characterised their adolescent clubbing experience in Ravenna. “I tried to encapsulate in this record that small symbolic universe which, for me at least, is Neapolitan culture. Some of these images are reminiscences of my childhood, while others are things I discovered a lot later, when I decided to look back at my origins and embrace them with pride. I chose to include references to history, beliefs, traditions, to celebrate the Tarantella in a different but somehow related key, and to start the record with a magical figure, the Femminiello, because I wanted this album to be like that: hybrid, mysterious and lucky." 1 Xxybrid shapes as a holy architecture, at times dense and visceral - as in the lovesick and nostalgic verses of Amam Ancora - at times suspended and jagged - as in the fragmented ravey crescendo of Hard Tarantella, a remake of the Neapolitan Tarantella, in which the artist included a conversation with a worshipper on the concept of faith, recorded inside a church in Naples. The sacred is one of the cornerstones of Nziria’s debut, being a distinctive element of Naples' magnetism intertwining absolute reverence for Christian icons with pagan superstitions, as for the Devil in ‘ E Riavule 77, which in the Neapolitan Tombola is associated with the number 77, around which a Femminiello tells a myth. Nostalgia is another central theme of the record, best represented in Pensiero, in which this feeling of nostalgia for a loved one overlaps with the one for a place, that is also a time, a golden past painful to return to; after all, nostalgia is etymologically "pain of return". Symbolism and spiritualism reach their peak in the final track, ‘O Dolor, conceived by Nziria as a moment of nirvana in which their voice, frantic arpeggios and granular synthesis reunite to then greet the listener with infinite meditative space. Xxybrid will be released on 20th May 2022 on Never Sleep in vinyl and digital format.

The B-side opens with 'Voices' as candy-floss vocals topped with xtra sugar taste even better with every play; while ascending basslines and frenetic drums join hands to produce that FFF energy we all know and love. 'Full of Light' provides tranquility at the end of a wild ride, as shimmering synths shine with radiant bliss with the power to transcend "bathed in light and lifted in what I can only call another dimension."

When you talk about the origins of jungle music, DJ Dextrous is most definitely cited as a name that helped define the genre. His tracks were always on heavy rotation on the mighty Kool FM and every Jungle/DnB radio station across the country. Dextrous VIP dubplate specials were weapons in the record bags of Micky Finn, DJ Ron, Kenny Ken and his old mate from school DJ Hype!

The 1994 Jungle anthem Charged was released on the ground-breaking Suburban Base Records imprint as part of a ‘King Of The Jungle’ Trilogy. Now updated for 2022 Charged gets a couple of fresh licks from two modern day jungle specialists, backed up with original and VIP exclusive versions, all packaged on a beautiful 12” vinyl picture disc.

First up are the mighty Serial Killaz who’ve taken the original track and applied their trademark, award winning sound which has seen them releasing on Congo Natty, Philly Blunt, Souped Up and their own self-titled Serial Killaz label.

Next up is Akas who’s recent Old Skool New Skool track on DeVice spend almost 3 months in the Beatport Top 10!! Akas keeps things jungle for his Charged remix but tweaks the elements and pushes the genre to have the maximum impact on any dancefloor across clubs or festivals.

On the flip is an original unreleased VIP dubplate version, sourced from the archives or Da Kings Of The Jungle studio DAT recordings, which DJ Dextrous was playing in his sets exclusively. Finally we have the classic original mix of Charged which has been beautifully remastered from the original source recording to make this picture disc release sound as good as it possibly can. These are the demos of what would later go on to be the ‘Projection’ EP, released on Moving Shadow back in 1992 by Tone Def. The original release was a collaboration between the band and Rob Playford, recorded in both his Hertfordshire studio and Tone Def’s Bournemouth studio. Rob used to like to get hands on with his early signings to the label by helping to mould the releases to fit brand.

This EP has been licensed courtesy of Moving Shadow and these are the original demos that were written by the Rog, Paul and Tony and handed into Shadow for consideration. These 4 tracks were lost until recently, rediscovered on a ¼ tape by Rog Mogale in his archives. Never before heard or released, this is some proper UK rave history, fresh out the box 30 years after conception.

During the early days of house music and into the progression of rave, Rog built speakers and sound systems for clubs from scratch. He was so good at it, he built his own company, Void Audio, which is now the worlds leading supplier of club and festival sound systems.

Using his royalties made through his Vinyl Fanatiks and Amen Brother releases, Lee X-Plode bought some new studio equipment and took time out to learn how to use it. When he reappeared some months later he sent me a zip of some insane acid breakbeat tracks, telling me this was the sound he always wanted to create. Jon K & Elle Andrews MAL imprint returns with its second release - a long rumoured excursion from Equiknoxx skippers Gavin “Gavsborg” Blair and Jordan “Time Cow” Chung operating under the Gav & Jord masthead for the first time. Who else would boot off a new LP with a track titled ‘Childish House Mafia’? The fact it sounds like Actress formulating an industrial noise tape using ritual chants just makes it all the more screwy. The title track returns the duo to more familiar ground, with prickly “Bird Sound Power” drums notched up a few BPM and spliced with whirring trap hats and disorienting synths. ‘A Yow Jon K’ is a Kingston-fried take on sun-bleached Miami electro, with a rolling beat filled out by Gav & Jord’s hard boiled soundboard x foley crunches, before ‘Pig Pilot’, the record’s most substantial cut, loops JBC Radiophonic Workshop convulsions around a booming 4/4 that wouldn’t sound completely out of place at Berghain’s Klubnacht. Saturating the hook and allowing ferric hats to fill in the gaps, the pair manage to fabricate a sound closer to 1970s library music than Villalobos, and we’d wager you ain’t ever heard owt like it. Combine all this with lower-key slithering industrial-ambient moments like the plughole-wonked outro ‘Brent Bird’ (named after Gav’s producer brother), the tuned tinkle of ‘No Sweat in my Sweatpants’ and the airborne elegance of ‘Appinness’, and you’ve got another Equiknoxx joint that draws from the syncretic mosaic of Afro-Latin-Sino-US influences and re-contextualises them into remarkably odd and effective structures that dance in the integers of a myriad styles.

The Slightly Involved project is a collaboration between Amy Dabbs & Coco Bryce, in which they bring their own styles and techniques to tracks the other artist has recently released. In this first instalment, using tracks released solely via Lobster Theremin and its sub-labels, Amy Dabbs' Girl Like Me and Allure get the full Coco Bryce treatment, and Amy Dabbs takes on Coco's Twenty One Lies and Ma Bae Be Luv. Coco, renowned for incorporating elaborately edited layers of breaks samples into his sound, serves up a slice of acid jazz in Geezer Like Me, his take on Amy Dabbs' Girl Like Me. Complementing this, is Allude, an edgier jungle version of Amy's track, Allure. Amy, who codes her own drum patterns from the ground up, delivers us Twenty One Highs, a liquid style take on Coco Bryce's Twenty One Lies, with Ma Bae Be Blonde, her version of Coco's Ma Bae Be Luv, paying homage to the UK’s early rave era.
