After our inaugural release by STL we look to a long running UK based artist Soomro. Growing up in the W10 part of London, Honest Jon's was a stones throw away and Soomro's first proper musical eduction. At a young age he was absorbing and digging through various genres and artists like King Tubby, Pink Floyd & Miles Davis, then going onto experience first hand in his teens the 90's golden era of UK underground dance music, from listening to UK Garage artists like R.I.P. Productions and Tuff Jam at the Gas Club to Drum & Bass artists like Dillinja and Source Direct at the Blue Note. These experiences were the foundations that helped shape and influence what Shaun does musically till this day.

Pingipung and Future Nuggets present Cosima, a Bucharest based artist, with two wonderfully poignant songs. Cosima Opârtan is widely known as one half of "Raze de Soare" (Future Nuggets). As a solo artist, she files her music under the genre widow pop - melancholically reaching out to the past and the future in one gesture. She sings like someone addressing a beloved but faraway audience, or a trusted, distant relative who can only be seen through someone else's description. Cosima has a background as an architect which she shifted to designing sonic treatments for various spaces such as sound studios. She is also a founding member of the Queer Night, a series of itinerant parties engaging the local LGBTQ+ community and part of Corp., a Bucharest based platform dedicated to supporting and promoting female & female identified musical talent. "Ploaia" has been co-composed and produced by Ion Dumitrescu, known to all Pingipung afficionados for his 7inch as Ion Din Dorobanti (Pingipung 056) who also runs the never failing Future Nuggets label. On the flip side, the two team up with Horațiu Șerbănescu, an artist from the Future Nuggets roster releasing music as "Plevna".

“Merzbow is erotic like a car crash can be related to genital intercourse.” (from an interview with Masami Akita). Somewhere in between dadaism and surrealism, Merzbow’s work is a sum of all his influences and also a sublimation of his life experiences, all which pervade the different layers of his tracks. Improvisation and composition lose their meaning, as Masami’s work goes beyond and finds its meaning in accidents, disruptions and experimentation. His music gives freedom to the listener and to a certain extent, invites to meditation. Whenever I think of Merzbow’s catalogue, I see it as this complex collage of singular moments across time when he got influenced by a particular object or person or idea, and transposed those into noise. And Torus EP is that particular instance, the encounter between Japan and Serbia, between Masami Akita and Jezgro, with the result being 4 sinister and unsettling tracks, visceral and at the same time heart-rending.

Revealed last year as a side project by UK producer Shifted, Covered In Sand now returns with a new EP: Crescent Shaped Scars will be released on the sister label of his own Avian imprint Mira, which serves as an outlet for the more experimental and duskier side of electronic music.

The release features three abrasive noise workouts. Thud of drums and ritualistic rhythms define the opener Luarica on the A-side alongside a near-melodic whine that stays present throughout the tracks. Orapa (An Interview) on the flip swallows and evokes scuffed voices of a conversation, striving into isolation, while Venetia resumes the haunting rhythm and layers of distortion.

"Following on from May's "echoes Part 1 & 2" this is the second single of three to be released as an introduction to the next album project of Ulrich Troyer - Transit Tribe - to be released later this year.

This time it's one for the reggae fans and dubheads with contributions from Diggory Kenrick who has been busy over the last few years adding the distinctive sound of his flute to many new reggae productions. He is also an associate of the U.K. reggae label Pressure Sounds that specialises in reviving classic sounds from the roots and dancehall eras of the genre. Also joining the production is Takafumi Noda aka Mystica Tribe, a Japanese producer and musician who has specialised in a new form of dub techno and is known for adding the signature sound of his melodica to productions of dub friends from around the world.

The subject of travel, especially along modern, fast routes has long been subject to fascinate musicians, from the days of Kraftwerk's "Autobahn" and now the whole genre of dub techno seems to be one built for listening on long journeys. The Autostrada Del Brennero / Brennerautobahn is one of the most important motorways in Italy, as it connects the Po Valley with Austria through the Brenner Pass and features many modern bridges and overpasses that are ready built illustrations for the covers of dub techno albums! On this release this major European truck route is celebrated musically by Ulrich Troyer with inputs from Diggory and Taka to create two modern dub classics."

arbitrary presents Dissolvè / Scillions by Antoine Hubineau. Derived from the same series of compositions, Dissolvè and Scillions are drawn from modular synthesizer recordings which have been reworked, treated and composed in the computer.

Dissolvè is a mosaic which is in constant motion. The inner details are guided by an outer structure which act as a kind of rhythmic subtraction. It is destabilised to the point where it fractures, from the macro to the micro level; abstracting a filigree from the original rhythm.

Scillions breaks an initial path into several directions which create new paths. Directional blur in harmonic motion makes it difficult to predict the outcomes. Contrary movements, synchronisation and desynchronisation build and break the relations between these new paths. Finally, altered versions of these new directions give some familiarity, while adding to the ambient disorder.

Based in Latillé (France), Antoine Hubineau works in the electronic music field, as a composer, musician, teacher and co-founder of the Sillages residency. His practice is focused on sound synthesis, which become alternately pseudo-acoustic instruments, abstract matter and surreal spaces. In his compositions, he makes the most of the cracks between free pulsation and collateral rhythms, between harmonic stability and sound spectrum tearings.

Last year, we got together with The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision’s RE:VIVE initiative for the second time, inviting four local artists to breathe new life into four archival films from the Sound and Vision and EYE Filmmuseum archives. Jordan GCZ, Suzanne Kraft, Parrish Smith and Upsammy were all assigned short animated films dating back to 1921. The films and their new scores debuted at EYE on August 2nd as part of Dekmantel Festival 2018. Unsurprisingly, each artist imparted their unique styles onto the films that they previously had no relation with. From Suzanne Kraft's sparse atmospherics that have become more apparent in his new SK U KNO project to Jordan GCZ’s free flowing hardware jams. Parrish Smith showed his contemplative side and sparse orchestrations that he demonstrated on his RE:VIVE release, Genesis Black, a sonic departure from his bombastic releases and DJ-sets while upsammy showed yet again her deft hand for melody and texture, a style that dominates all her releases to date.
These four scores can live apart from their films, fitting seamlessly into each artists' growing catalogs of work. But when combined, it’s as if the films and music were made simultaneously with the artist and filmmaker together in the same room. Dekmantel and RE:VIVE are proud to present these new works as the electronic music scene in The Netherlands continues to show its multifaceted talent that continues to expand far beyond the dance floor.

After a long time in the works, Mothball Record is proud to present a lost album from legendary Italian wave band: Ruins. Hailing from Venice, Ruins are one of the pioneering artists of the Italian new wave scene beginning in the late seventies: an explosion of new and exciting art, music and film. The tracks on “New Record” were taken from the self-distributed, tape only release from 1983 “Side Roads”. This album was timed directly before their most well-known releases in contemporary times, the “Fire / Crime” 12” and the eponymous 4 track EP on Black Square. Taken from the original master tapes and selected by Ruins themselves, the album should be listened as a whole to gain the full experience, but immediate ‘must-hear’ tracks are “I Don’t Know”, “I Love You” and “Last Night DJ Killed My Wife” featuring early use of Roland TB303. At times unsettling, beautiful, violent, harmonious, these songs will finally get the audience and exposure they deserve 35 years later.

In July 2019 RUMPELN and DANIEL DOOR (Jahmoni Music) went on a tour through the UK and the Benelux. This 12" was recorded and mixed by Seb-I and Nick McCarthy (Manuela, Lunsentrio, Franz Ferdinand) at Sausage Studios, Hackney, London during this summer of delete.
Pumping proto-rhythms disrupting a wall of distortion building up from unintelligible screams, broadcasts of gadgets on the brink of destruction, DIY instruments made of springs, shards of metal and trash, all hardly held together by a skinny, long-haired figure jumping in the flicker of glitched out AV loops – there’s a deep understanding to be found in Anton Kaun’s performances that we, as animals, will never really get along with our electronics.
With his latest setup, „wallwart scales“, Daniel Door explores the sonic depths of a bundle of wallwart power outlets. Disconnected from the machines (like smartphones, external hard drives and old Casio keyboards) they once fed with electricity, their distinctive inner wiring becomes the base of a microtonal scale made audible by an EMF microphone (the Elektrosluch made by LOM, Batrislava, Slovakia) and mangled in a constantly re-sampling arrangement by an Elektron Octatrack sampler.

Hessle Audio welcomes Toumba to the label with the four track EP 'Petals'. Based in Amman, Jordan, Toumba explores Levantine microtonality, rhythms, play styles and timbres across the record. Lead track 'Istibtan' is a twist on a typical Jordanian wedding song with deep subs providing the foundations, while 'Petals' rides on the heavy swing which is unique to music from the south of Jordan. On the flip side, 'Hazzeh' deconstructs Dabkeh, while the EP is rounded off with 'Identity Crisis' which is four minutes of lilting melodies all in Maqam Rast but played in an untraditional way.

Toumba is a producer, DJ and sound designer and is a curator at Mnfa, a club and arts space in Jordan's capital Amman. A nationally respected artist, Toumba also holds a residency at the Mmag Foundation. The foundation works with a selection of the most gifted artists in the Levant, providing a space for artistic research, production and critical discourse.

The second of November’s Feral Child releases is another absolute beauty. A beautiful comeback record of sorts for Marc Rigelsford’s Magic ARM project. The 45 is a taster for his own privately released, and utterly fabulous “Dance Mania” full length, currently available via his bandcamp page. Recorded in isolation in a former whiskey distillery, “Dance Mania” is “Magic Arm whittling and distilling sound down to pure forms, a collage of songs, mood pieces, drones, found sounds and stirring instrumental passages”. The two tracks here are lifted from the album, with its A side, the majestic “Good Views Near North” having already attained 6music airplay. The songs’ treated piano opening offers no hint to the beautifully incessant, kinda’ motorik groove that then takes over- wonderfully skewed and quite otherworldly perhaps. The groove then changes tack again as it closes with cellos and strings aiding further it’s general ‘out there’ mood. It’s a beautiful piece and by releasing it on 45, one would hope to push Marc’s music out a wee bit further, certainly it’s a thrill for Feral Child to release it and it’s flip, the more electronic, and equally fabulous “432” is just great too.

Recorded in early 2015 and originally released as a micro edition cassette on World News Records, No Language is the debut collection of songs by Melbourne’s Caroline No. The group’s unique, beguiling sound sits somewhere between archetypal Dunedin pop and languorous, textural improvisation. No Language was spontaneously recorded with one microphone and the serendipity of the session proves tactile in the listening experience. We hear heavily reverbed laughter, coughing, fits and starts with various processing equipment, all of which contribute wonderfully to the ephemeral nature of the music. On “Up To Downtown” vocalist Caroline Kennedy implores the band to “just try to stay in time” before lurching into what, against all odds, turns out to be a remarkably anthemic earworm of a pop song. Closer “Roomer” incorporates granular processing (perhaps a pedal someone forgot they’d brought to the session) to endearing and startling effect. Ultimately, No Language is a marvelous balancing act of a record, drawing from pop, free improv, and psychedelia in equal parts to arrive at something timeless.

Sounding in turns both futuristic and nostalgic, it sets the tone for the dream-like timezone in which this EP resides. Meanwhile slowed-down 303 chugger Grace In Space sounds perfect for Room 2 - that is, if the room is on an orbiting space station and someone adjusted the gravity settings. The track concludes the side with timeless balearic drift and a dash of kosmiche afro percussion sprinkled on top. Flip the 12” over and the title track Mediterranean Dreams seeps through, with more than a slight nod to the summer of ‘88, like a faded photograph. The revolving chord progression and melodic synth phrases that weave through the groove fit together sweeter than the cogs in a swiss watch. EP closer Becalmed rounds proceedings out in fine cosmic disco style, firing more 16th note lasers through the dry ice than Kitt, as melancholic pads float over the rhythm section like a négligée. It’s a stylish way to sign off a collection of tracks that are equal parts fond memory, hopeful optimism, and hazy dance-fuelled hedonism.

Rome's Egisto Sopor has been making little waves with his releases for quite a while now. As Polysik, he’s put out music on Legowelt’s Strange Life Records, on 100% Silk label, and on Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu. As ‘TheAwayTeam’ he’s released a DVD ‘Relax & Sleep’ and a cd ‘Star Kinship’ on Japanese label Moamoo, and he's also one half of the low key video unit Aavv (whose work has graced many of the important releases of new lofi electronic movement). This time around he delivers another fine instalment to the Edizioni Mondo's kaleidoscopic catalogue. If you've been following Egisto Sopor's productions over the years, chances are you're already familiar with the visual, highly cinematic, quality of his works – it's music that don't evoke just emotions, it suggests landscapes, painting vivid pictures as it builds up. In the same way, Flora e Fauna tells the story of an extemporaneous, surreal walk in Rome. The 8-track album, organically navigates through imaginary urban and maritime scenarios, with an expansive sound palette that draws on deep and shimmering atmospheres, occasionally drifting from blissful textures and sub-aquatic, swirling moods to eerily quiet, suspended moments, often perfused by subtle field recordings of city life, wild animals and distant shores. In November 2017, Jo David Meyer Lysne played several concerts in Tokyo and Chiba in Japan. In Joar Renolen and John Derek's remixes, the concert recordings are equated with field recordings from the city. The sound of construction work, parks with dry leaves on the ground, busy streets, singing kindergarten children merge with experimental sound sculpting on prepared acoustic twelve-string guitar. The core of what we want to explore, is how improvised music has an ability to spontaneously process impressions that are nearby in time. The unique and unpredictable letters are the work of the unclassifiable Sagan Ummo (here Satan Ummo). The fantastic artwork is by Sagan Crimewear and the scary mastering (I swear the bass is really powerful) is by J.F. Rojo at Red Records Studio.

Again we can hear massive granular sythesis pads, background noises, experimental compression routines that help to fullfill the Generative Operation series. A remarkable one-off tribute to the drummer behind the most sampled break of all time, Clyde Stubblefield, this 7” goes straight for the glitchy jugular, cutting up Stubblefield’s breaks from his time with James Brown into a blizzard of rhythmically complex, tightly programmed IDM, underpinned by deep, dark sub-bass. Stubblefield passed away in 2017, but his legacy lives on through numerous tracks that sampled his work across genres like hip hop, jungle, and, well, more or less every other genre. Most were uncredited and he wasn’t paid for his contributions.

After a two-year hiatus Georg (co-founder of Light of Other Days) is back with a new EP and a new moniker. As usual the five tracks on the EP «A Million Pieces» are hard to pinpoint and are highly personal pieces of work. On «A Million Pieces» Slow Glass takes us on a journey from dark ambient spaces to carefree dancefloors. «A Million Pieces» starts out in a state of tension but over the course of the EP, Slow Glass takes the listener to a place of relief. The productions are mainly based on heavily manipulated fieldrecordings and everyday sounds. Slow Glass creates dense soundscapes which build the frame for light-hearted harmonies as well as playful percussion and gloomy synth lines. The EP closes out with «Relieved», a rhythmic dance track with hopping synths and airy guitar that could almost make for a summer song. «A Million Pieces» is an adventurous EP for curious listeners. It is loaded with quirky sounds, rhythmic arpeggios, and impulsive percussions. The digital package comes with three remixes by the likes of Thunder Tillman, Belia Winnewisser and Gee Dee. The cosmic travellers from Thunder Tillman turn «Release» into a psyched-out journey into space and time. Belia Winnewisser delivers a powerful, club-ready version of «Strained» adding her trademark drum-sounds and label-mate Gee Dee gifts «Release» with a treatment of analog warmth.
