Daily Paper: Contemporary streetwear meets African roots

Daily Paper was officially founded by three close friends Hussein Suleiman, Jefferson Osei and Abderrahmane Trabsini in 2010 to design contemporary streetwear with a strong reference to the trio’s African roots. Naturally, it took some time for conceptual planning, so the first collection of the Amsterdam-based brand appeared two years later. However, the trio had already been running a successful blog since 2008, which served as a store for their own T-shirts with variations of the Daily Paper logo. Although the range was initially limited mainly to high-quality basics with print motifs, the Daily Paper founders already had cut & sew pieces as well as jackets, pants or accessories in mind. In 2015, Daily Paper also introduced a women’s collection. Again, the inspiration for the designs came primarily from the landscape of sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Somalia. Around the same time period, the first sportswear and casualwear pieces debuted under the Daily Paper banner.

Daily Paper is all about clothes that make you feel good. Daily Paper appeals to women and men who like to define themselves by their outfits, regardless of their age. The basis for each collection is in-depth research into various aspects of African history and transforming that information into original designs and print motifs. A lasting influence on the color palette of the following Daily Paper collection was a trip to Morocco that was on the agenda in early 2014. During the photo shooting, the trio was inspired by the culture, colors and fabrics of Morocco.

Two years later, while the DP lookbook was shot in Paris, the Daily Paper team soaked up the vibes and energy there as well to incorporate the influences into the follow-up collection. Successful city trips, including one to Berlin, were to follow, sometimes accompanied by Daily Paper pop-up stores. What has always remained is the Daily Paper crew’s close connection to Paris, thanks in no small part to the endless networking options when it comes to street fashion. The people of every city toured by the Daily Paper trio had one thing in common: they had nothing but love for the brand.

But for the Daily Paper boys, the greatest city in the world is and always will be Amsterdam. Even though the three consider themselves modern nomads and traveling is one of their favorite things to do, there is no other place in the world that conveys a feeling like their hometown.
