Albinö Rhino are a psychedelic doom rock trio from Helsinki, Finland. The band has released 2 albums & various EPs over the years. They recorded this amazing hand numbered 35min continuous piece after jamming it at the practice room mostly improvised for years, in between the heavier pieces that Albinö Rhino is known for and jumped to the studio when the arrangement felt right. One of the parts is written just one day before entering the beautiful Suomenlinnan Studio with the talented sound wizard Ilari Larjosto. The album was recorded live in one day with some additional overdubs recorded later at Helsinki Music Studio, where the album was also mixed. The opus was mastered at Virtalähde Mastering. Dr Space, Olli Laamanen & Mikko Heikinpoika added their magic when the core was built. The piece moves from acoustic spacey music to heavy desert rock and doom with ease and grace and has an amazing flow to create one hell of a good psychedelic ride-

Wayne Kramer came to prominence as a teenager in 1967 as a co-founder of the Detroit rock group MC5, a group known for their powerful live performances and radical left-wing political stance. The Pink Fairies - on the other hand - are an English rock band initially active in the London underground and psychedelic scene of the early 1970s. They promoted free music, drug taking and anarchy and often performed impromptu gigs and other agitprop stunts, such as playing for free outside the gates at the Bath and Isle of Wight pop festivals in 1970, as well as appearing at Phun City, the first Glastonbury and many other free festivals including Windsor and Trentishoe. When two such masters of sonic revolution meet up, sparks are sure to fly as you will hear on this extraordinary record!

Born out from the ashes of legendary Florida garage band The Tropics (of “As Time’s Gone” fame), Bacchus was a powerful psychedelic/hard-rock/boogie power trio influenced by Cream, Hendrix, Allman Brothers et al. They only released four rare 45s, collected here for the first time. When Eric Turner (guitarist, vocalist and songwriter), grew into a more progressive form of rock music after a split from The Tropics, he teamed up with fellow Tropics bass player Charlie Souza and drummer Bill Peterson: Bacchus (named after the Roman God of wine) was born. In 1970 they opened for Cactus and Free and after the good response, they recorded their first 45, the fab hard-rock sounding “Carry My Load”. From there they went on tour with Grand Funk Railroad around the state. After more 45 releases, Bacchus was also the opening act for Lynyrd Skynyrd, BB King, The Outlaws, Redbone, Edgar Winter, and Ted Nugent. They also had the privilege to open a Florida concert for Mahavishnu Orchestra and appeared on the free stage at the Atlanta Pop Festival, just before Grand Funk Railroad on the main stage. Famous also in the recent years for appearing on one the famous Brown Acid volumes, a vinyl / digital comp of their complete output was long overdue. Here it is. Play Loud!

This album was conceived over the past several years, through chaos and confusion, during a global pandemic that forced the band to work in new/unconventional ways they had never before imagined. The music on this album has never seen an audience. These songs have never been performed. And in fact, the recording of the album was the first time the members of the group even understood what their new creations sounded like! The initial writing sessions began in the summer of 2019, but were obviously halted in early 2020 due to the situation. Over the next two years, the band did their best to move forward with the process but rehearsals were infrequent, sickness and health threats always barking at the door, and a constant unknown of what was to come; was there any future for their art at all?...But slowly and disjointedly, they assembled their musical ideas into 7 rough pieces that would soon comprise “Life Is Much Stranger”. From Sept-Oct of 2022, the group worked with a team of engineers across three studios in NYC, recording and mixing the tracks, sculpting their rough song-forms into polished, yet quite surreal, glistening gems! Before Mahjun (of which Souffle Continu reissued, in 2016, the two albums released on Saravah), there was… Maajun. Five musicians (Jean-Pierre Arnoux, Cyril and Jean-Louis Lefebvre, Alain Roux and Roger Scaglia) and three times as many instruments at the service of an electric-poetic guerrilla group moulded from folk and blues. The group’s unique album, “Vivre la Mort du Vieux Monde” evokes an (imaginary) association of Frank Zappa and Jacques Higelin, of Sonny Sharrock and the Art Ensemble Of Chicago. Under these conditions, Long Live Death!

“The most French of all the French groups, determined to take Maurice Chevalier’s place in American hearts.” This was how Rock&Folk presented Mahjun in 1977. So be it. But when “Vivre la Mort du Vieux Monde”, was issued, it was 1971, and the name, though the same group, was still spelled Maajun. So, let’s look back at the story. At the end of the sixties, five blues fans decided to form a French group ready to break down the barriers: Jean-Pierre Arnoux (drums, vibraphone, saxophone), Cyril Lefebvre (guitar, organ), Jean-Louis Lefebvre (bass, violin, guitar, vocals), Alain Roux (saxophone, flute, harmonica, vocals) and Roger Scaglia (guitar, vocals). This was Maajun, and Vivre la mort du vieux monde would be their only album, but which would (nevertheless) be followed by those of Mahjun created later by Lefebvre (Jean-Louis) and Arnoux. Recorded for the Vogue label, “Vivre la Mort du Vieux Monde” would disturb a number of people. This is mostly due to the lyrics, many of which were written by Gérald Escot-Bocanegra, who, while summoning the spirit of Lautréamont and Rimbaud, turned the Maajun musicians on to rock and free jazz. Add a bit of politics into the mix, and the release of the album was delayed for several months. But then, wasn’t it worth waiting for? Because “Vivre la Mort du Vieux Monde”, a real concept-album, is an important and iconoclastic statement made directly in the face of (francophone) dreamers of all countries. Over heavy guitar riffs, psychedelic interludes or fantasy-fuelled digressions, Maajun built mazes on the advice of alchemists known only to themselves before heading off on a long march on the “cracking walls”. It was an ambitious project, but Maajun could handle it, going so far as to proclaim: “Tomorrow will be a huge party!” But as we can see “tomorrow”, is now!

Øresund Space Collective (øsc), formed in 2004, is a totally improvising Scandinavian space rock band and has been releasing albums since 2006. The band has played concerts & festivals all over Europe. Their music is quite diverse and influenced by the ever-changing line up in the collective. The material on this LP was recorded in October 2010 on the 2nd day of recording and features a lot of different musicians from days 1 and 3. A lot of the material has a funky nature, but it is a very diverse album with a nice chillout sitar number and a lot of space rock!! Some of the tracks have been edited for the vinyl edition. Recorded at the Black Tornado Studios in København, Denmark in Oct. 2010 by Lars Lundholm Mixed & mastered by Dr Space at Estúdio Paraíso Nas Nuvens, Portugal in 2020 with sonic advice from Hasse Horrigmoe Artwork / layout by David Graham

Formed in London’s Islington borough in 1970, Grit would perform their heavy psychedelic rock locally for three years, disbanding and disappearing before they could sign a contract with a record label. Their sole recorded output was a three-track demo, recorded in 1972, of which only two copies were ever pressed. One of those copies made its way to Germany, where it was discovered in a flea market by record collector and psychedelic rock expert Hans Pokora. After being featured in Pokora’s “7001 Record Collector Dreams” and being awarded the maximum grade of rarity, the record quickly became an object of desire for crate diggers around the world. It didn’t take long for somebody to track down original guitarist Frank “Spider” Martinez, and with the original master tapes he still had in his possession, reissues were off to the races!

And for good reason - not only is this record incredibly rare, but the heavy psychedelic rock is unparalleled, with comparisons to Cream, Jimmy Hendrix, and John Mayall hardly doing it the justice it deserves. Fuzzed out riffs, Robert Plant-esque shout singing, and some of the most aggressive drumming this side of the Thames, makes for a psychedelic rock sound that’s unmistakably British but undeniably awesome.
