An album whose depth and beauty is, nearly five decades on, still utterly staggering."- Mojo Released by the Kapp label in 1970 and produced by the Oscar-winning Leonard Rosenman, Parallelograms was the first and only album by American psychedelic folk singer Linda Perhacs until the release of The Soul of All Natural Things in 2014. Discouraged by the lack of commercial attention and the label's reluctance to promote the album, Perhacs returned to her career as a dental hygienist. In the 30 or so years that followed, this record gradually developed a cult following. Combining fragile and ethereal melodic acid folk with perfectly rendered electronic effects, Parallelograms consists of what Perhacs herself described as "visual music." The spotlight is placed clearly on Linda's guitar and voice, where echoes of Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and even Grace Slick (lead singer of Jefferson Airplane) can be traced. As was common in his work, Rosenman's production ends up shaping a soundscape located somewhere between jazz, classical music and the avant-garde. All Music reviewer Richie Unterberger gave it 4 ½ out of 5 stars, stating that "Perhacs' cult favorite Parallelograms instantly evokes the spare and isolated feel of the songs and the production on Joni Mitchell's first albums. Perhacs is adept at dropping unusual effects and arrangements into the mix, that on occasion have a mildly disquieting and psychedelic vibe. Not all of the record is unusual, though; much of it's just attractively wistful, moody singer/songwriter folk, sometimes with an engaging folk-jazz backup, sometimes just with a guitar, sometimes enlivened by creative smudges of organ and electric guitar.

Lightning Love, a band consisting of siblings Leah and Aaron Diehl and friend Ben Collins, delivers a cheery indie-pop sound flavored with sugary sweet keyboard-driven arrangements and underscored by heart-on-sleeve honesty. Their self-released debut album, November Birthday (2009), leveraged Leah’s compelling vocals and themes of tackling the challenges of newfound adulthood and is sure to appeal to fans of Mates of State, Alvvays, Spoon, and Belle and Sebastian.

All Music Guide wrote at the time, “[November Birthday] was a collection of bright, enthusiastic and minimally arranged indie-pop coupled with dour, neurotic lyrics that swung from ironically witty to the borderline cry-for-help territory. The underlying despair of the album was easily outshined by the band’s gift for hooks and straightforward melodies proud to be uncluttered and classically streamlined, even if they were supporting lyrics about falling-down drunkenness or not wanting to leave the house.”

Lightning Love signed to Quite Scientific in 2011 and released a sophomore album Blonde Album to wider critical acclaim including glowing reviews in Paste, Vice, Under the Radar and My Old Kentucky Blog, and was featured on NPR’s World Cafe. Guitarist Collins went on to lead the Detroit group Minihorse (Park the Van Records) and has recorded with and produced for many bands, including Anna Burch (Polyvinyl). Lightning Love was a finalist in Billboard magazine’s 2011 Battle of the Bands and has been featured on Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” and in a number of movies.

The band has toured with The Von Bondies, Jamaican Queens, and Tally Hall. They have also shared the stage with such notable acts as The High Strung, Walk the Moon, Mayer Hawthorne, and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. Lightning Love has performed at SXSW, Midpoint Music Fest, Mitten Fest, CMJ, and Daytrotter Session.

November Birthday is a cherished release to the band and their biggest fans and Lost in Ohio is pleased to be re-releasing the album for the first time ever on vinyl. Japanese experimental group Les Rallizes Denudes are the ultimate rock ‘n’ roll enigma. Sometimes referred to as Hadaka no Rallizes or even as Hadaka no Rarizu, each appellation a variant of the name “Fucked Up and Naked” which equates to being high on hard drugs, they are seen as noise-rock pioneers, yet sifting fact from fiction isn’t easy with their oddball tale. Emerging from the radical hippie communes of Kyoto during the late 1960s, the band was formed in November 1967 by university student Takashi Mizutani, taking the overamplified, distorted guitar of the Velvet Underground as a starting point. Early demo recordings apparently suffered from poor sound quality, leading the perfectionist Mizutani to retreat from the studio environment, meaning that most of the group’s output has appeared as live bootlegs, with the occasional studio demo surfacing as well. Performances were initially staged as part of avant-garde theatre, though the band’s propensity for super- loud noise soon put paid to such collaboration; the ever-changing membership saw Mizutani the only permanent force, despite his embroilment in the 1970 Red Army hijacking of a civilian Japan Airlines flight, enacted partly through bass player, Moriaki Wakabayashi, who defected to North Korea in its aftermath. Though perhaps not quite as notorious, fellow improvisational group, Taj Mahal Travellers, has a backstory of random international travels that is almost as intriguing as that of Les Rallizes; formed in 1969 by six experimental musicians and an electronic engineer, they embarked on a series of improvisational gigs across Japan, notably including an all-day marathon held at a Kanagawa beach, and made their way to Europe in 1971, where they crossed paths with Don Cherry and other likeminded practitioners. They later drove from Holland to the Pakistan border, acquiring santoors in Iran on the way to help broaden their already unpredictable repertoire. The Oz Days Live release is culled from the Oz Last Days festival held in the autumn of 1973, to benefit Tokyo’s Oz Rock Café, which had been closed following repeated drug busts. Here the Taj Mahal Travellers are suitably cosmic, their echoing jams featuring looped vocal chants, disjointed string instruments and sparse, off-kilter percussion; in contrast, the contributions from Les Rallizes are more standard examples of instrumental psychedelic rock, which veers more towards the acid rock end of the spectrum as the performance progresses.

Only a decade ago Leong Lau remained a well-hidden Malaysian-Australian treasure, known only to small circles of Australian record collectors. In 2013 we met Leong in person at the Brisbane state library, where after a long and somewhat transcendental ‘conversation’, received his blessings to re-release his music.

In 2014, we reissued his sophomore album ‘That Rongeng Sound’ and later in 2021, his sole single ‘late Night Flyer. In 2024, we are going back to finish the triangle of Leong releases, with a repress of his debut 1976 album ‘Dragon Man’. A raw and electrifying album that continues to stand the test of time.

Dragon Man might best be described musically as psyc/rock, however the significant use of soul/funk and jazz melodies adds a unique musical depth that makes it hard to categorise. However, what truly sets Leong apart is his distinct vocal style, delivering half sung/half spoken lyrics in a stereotypical Aussie accent that comes across more like a sermon than what might be conceived as ‘traditional’ songs.

Moreover, in a time where the Australian music industry and its performers’ musical styles were dictated by major labels, Leong began to break down those barriers by self-releasing his music. This rewarded Leong creative control, where he was able to dictate the musical and cultural themes, with songs like ‘Dragon Man’ and ‘Deep In The Jungle’ that both pay homage to his unique Chinese/Malay heritage. That said, Dragon Man is both a significant musical and cultural statement that’s just as poignant today as it was then.

In the first half of the 70s the landscape of pop / rock music world was
revolutionized by a current defined as 'progressive'. For those groups who
dared to deviate from the 'commercial' stream and propose something
different, a double destiny was reserved: they could become a meteor-band,
releasing only one LP or so before disappearing completely, or emerge from
anonymity and capture the attention of major record labels.
This was the case of Le Orme who, after a debut on Car Juke-Box, were
engaged by Philips, releasing several albums who made history. And in an
attempt to ride the wave of success led by "Collage", "Uomo di Pezza" and
"Felona e Sorona", the record label didn't take long to propose the release of
a live record, which turned out to be "In concert ", one of the first if not THE
actual first live album ever printed in Italy.
The haste in wanting to market a new product with "Le Orme" brand on it
prevailed on the quality of the recordings, consisting of one side fully
improvised (the two parts of "Truck of Fire") and the other with songs from
the "Collage" LP; but the charm of this work, also due to the beautiful
photographic cover, comes out unharmed, and the grooves of "In Concert"
deliver us the 'real' Le Orme, without any tricks or deception, but sincere as
only a live performance can be!
