Touted as the “new Doors,” Ars Nova’s second release shows the band genre-bending jazz and heavy psychedelia in a style that’s their own. Shifting from a largely classical centric sound, this was the group’s last album before going their separate ways. Pressed on pink vinyl!

Sunshine & Shadows takes the baroque-meets-psych sound of the debut and turns a bit more to the psych side. The stately brass interludes are gone, but horns still figure prominently in the mix. There’s some jazzy New Orleans flavor to a couple of the tunes, albeit twisted into a 7/4 vamp on “You Had Better Listen.”

The instrumentalists in the band, featuring trumpet and trombone, really give the music a unique flavor, setting them apart from the multitudes of other American psych bands. Ars Nova might be likened to Ultimate Spinach (but without the overly serious, pretentious lyrics) or later Zombies (though with less emphasis on the keyboards).

It’s all very well written and nicely played, and when they do a tender ballad like “Temporary Serenade,” the acoustic guitar is very lute-like, much more along the lines of classical than folk (like the later work of Jan Akkerman with Focus), and the trumpet descant adds a lovely spice.

“Well, Well, Well” is the heaviest rock tune in their repertoire, with a great electric guitar riff and hot organ playing, again set apart by trombone and trumpet. This one is definitely worth seeking out for baroque pop fans.

Obscure psychedelic gospel act Methuselah had its roots in Scunthorpe ‘Beat’ group the Dimples, which became Gospel Garden, whose only 45 infused Northern Soul with psycheleanings. Regrouping as Methuselah, the group signed to Elektra for this sole religious rock concept LP, their sound deceptively American, with vocal harmonies evidencing bluegrass influences; guitarist Les Nicol is never short of excellent. Certain members would later form Amazing Blondel, but Matthew, Mark, Luke And John has a unique flavour, and our edition includes two rare bonus tracks. This slice of obscure psyche must be heard to be believed!

Cykle produced one album's worth of solid garage rock, and it certainly proves that the band was an enthusiastic bunch of musicians. Much closer to late 60’s garage (proto) punk than psychedelia, the album was released in 1969.

They were best known for their 1966 song "Red Rubber Ball" (written by Paul Simon) which went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The band was discovered and managed by Brian Epstein and given the unique spelling of their name by John Lennon. The group was formed by guitarists and lead singers Don Dannemann and Tom Dawes (bass guitar), who met while studying at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. The other members were Earl Pickens on keyboards and Marty Fried on drums.

If you’re as obsessed with unfairly unheralded bands as we are, bringing out a proper, well-deserved official re-release to change that course is always an honor. Case in point, Jackpot Records proudly announce GANDALF’s 1969 self-titled release as one of our proudest moments. Working alongside band member Peter Sando from the original master tapes, it is time for the rest of the uninitiated to catch up with this beautifully crafted haunting psych-pop record (fans of THE Left Banke, Kaleidoscope, THE Millennium, and THE Zombies, take note!). Recorded at Century Sound in Manhattan with Grammy-winning producer Brooks Arthur (who engineered Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” and Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl”), the production of the album was created on the spot in the studio with arrangements being thrown about and the incredibly haunted vocals being recorded directly from the band’s PA using a Binson Echorec to make this innovative sound (Pink Floyd later used the same echo unit to great effect). Add to that sitars, vibes, B3 organs, harpsichord, minor tragic guitar chords, and bass drones aplenty, and you’ve got the recipe for an album that bears listening to with eyes closed, music cranked, mind open. So get in on the beauty of this record, and as Sando says on the liner notes: “Put the needle in the groove, sit back, and take the trip with GANDALF.” Enough said.

This super rare hard rock album from Euclid is one of the true surprises on the Flying Dutchman label, coming out on its Amsterdam subsidiary in 1970. Despite a press release that stated “Everyone who has seen Gary Leavitt and Euclid has been knocked out,” the album stayed firmly in the record racks upon release and now sells for upward of £300.

The four-piece group hailed from Haverill, Massachusetts although only bassist Harold Perino came from there. Lead guitarist, Ralph Mazzota and brothers Gary and Jay Leavitt came from Maine. The driving force behind the band was Gary Leavitt, who penned most of their material, played guitar and was described as “leader” on the sleeve. All four had a pedigree in garage and psychedelic bands and those roots as well as a deep love of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page shine through in this early take on hard rock.

The album - produced by Bobby Herne and mixed by Les Paul Jr - is blisteringly loud. Hence the title! Witness the three-part opening track ‘Curtains Of Night’ as well as Leavitt-penned material like ‘Bye Bye Baby’, ‘97 Days’ and ‘She’s Gone’. Crucially, the entire album is lifted by the tight interplay between the players, most notably the rhythm section on tracks like ‘Lazy Livin’’. There are also well-chosen cover versions of 'It's All Over Now', made famous by the Rolling Stones, and a wonderful take of the Spencer Davis Group’s 'Gimme Some Lovin'’.

As it has never been officially reissued on vinyl, since 1970, “Heavy Equipment” has been much bootlegged over the years. So, remastered from the original tapes this album is a must-have for rock fans everywhere.

Fotheringay is the self-titled album by the group formed by Sandy Denny after she left Fairport Convention in 1969, and was the group’s only contemporaneous release. It was recorded in 1970 with former Eclection member and Denny’s future husband Trevor Lucas, with Gerry Conway, Jerry Donahue, and Pat Donaldson. In 1968 four of the five original members of The Wizards From Kansas formed a band called ‘New West’, and began playing in the Lawrence, Kansas area, at clubs and parties. Californian guitarist Robert Manson Crain joined the group soon thereafter, expanding to a quintet. Reaching on the same esoteric drift as Clear Light or Emitt Rhodes, the band unleashed an even excellent cover of Buffy Sainte-Marie ‘Cod’ine’, more in the vein of Quicksilver M.S.

Bluesy rust-belt psych from Ohio's December's Children! Bouncing between male and female vocalists, tight harmonies, country flavor and rock 'n' roll style, their sound fit the transition between pop and heavy rock in the late '60s. Pressed on pink vinyl!

This country-blues psych album was originally released near the end of 1970, and though it was their sole album, December's Children are a good example of how music was changing between the end of the '60s and beginning of the '70s. Accented by psychedelic keys & organ (especially in "Trilogy"), it's been described as Texas garage rock, with funky, hook driven guitar - particularly in "Sweet Talkin' Woman" and "Last Monday Night."

Opting for a more straight forward rock 'n' roll sound, the band never considered themselves psychedelic (though that was being pushed at the time), and though they weren't as heavy as Blue Cheer, their country-blues sound is nearly a precursor to later albums by Savoy Brown and Blodwyn Pig.

Freedom were one of many British groups that grew from that particularly fertile period that saw the likes of Alexis Korner, John Mayall, The Yardbirds and of course the Rolling Stones come to the fore. Comprising former members of the highly successful Procol Harum, the band recorded fresh original material that put them at the cutting edge of what became known as blues rock, all the while covering classics by their role models.

Freedom At Last is one of the best albums the group made in a relatively short life cycle. At times loud, hard and aggressive and at others mellow and introspective, the music showcases the compositional strengths of Bobby Harrison, Rogers Saunders and Walt Monaghan, while the reprises of anthems by the likes of Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon and Junior Wells makes it clear the band knew where it was going because it did not forget where it came from.

This newly remastered version of Freedom At Last is a very timely reminder of the vibrant work of a British band that made premium blues rock with attitude.

Formed in early 1970 by Deep Purple bassist Nick Simper, Warhorse began as a backing band for singer Marsha Hunt. The group initially also featured Rick Wakeman, but he departed the band in April 1970 to join Strawbs. The band’s self-titled debut album was released on Vertigo in November 1970 and is a fine example of progressive hard rock of the era. With a heavy Hammond organ touch the group was in fact leading a new way of thinking, fusing neoclassical elements with heavy blues. Compared to label mates Black Sabbath, Warhorse were in the end much closer to Atomic Rooster and Quatermass. A truly welcomed re-issue in gatefold vinyl !

Tone Float is the debut and only LP by the German band Organisation. The band featured two Kraftwerk former members: Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider-Esleben. The album was produced by Konrad "Conny" Plank and it was an astonishing example of free rock meets avant garde music, including a great variety of abstract noises, percussions and organ chords. First ever reissue of this elusive private pressing from 1970 by British singer/songwriter Keith Noble (a founding member of pre-Pink Floyd bands Sigma 6 / The Abdabs and co-composer of Chad & Jeremy’s hit ‘A Summer Song’). Mr. Compromise, originally released as a tiny demo pressing on the custom Eden label (home also of other psych-folk rarities like Mourning Phase), showcases the versatile songwriting talent of Noble: jazzy-bossa pop, Kinks/Hollies/Byrds styled full electric numbers and haunting psychedelic folk not unlike Al Stewart or Incredible String Band. Featuring Keith’s friend from the pre-Floyd days Rado Klose (one of the earliest members of Pink Floyd) on lead guitar. After the album release, Keith Noble dedicated his life to architecture and teaching and he also wrote several musicals. Sadly, he passed away in 2014. This long awaited reissue of “Mr Compromise”, has been possible with help from the Noble family.

Illusion is the second studio album by the English progressive rock band Renaissance, released in 1971. It was originally released only in Germany and did not receive a wider release until 1973. Following an American tour to support their first album, the band returned to the studio in the spring of 1970 to begin work on their second. The band recorded "Love Goes On", "Golden Thread", "Love Is All", and "Face of Yesterday" before they began to fall apart. Keith Relf and Jim McCarty were the first to leave, deciding to cease as performing members but remain involved with production and composition for the band. John Hawken recruited singer Terry Crowe and guitarist Michael Dunford (both from Hawken's previous band The Nashville Teens), as well as session drummer Terry Slade to replace Relf and McCarty. Louis Cennamo left shortly afterwards to join Colosseum. Bassist Neil Korner, another former member of The Nashville Teens, replaced him.

Psychedelic, progressive folk-rock masterpiece from 1971, recorded in London by John St. Field aka Jackie Leven (of Doll by Doll fame) but only released in Spain back at the time. Before becoming a cult singer/songwriter in the 90s, Scottish musician Jackie Leven debuted in the early 70s with “Control”, issued under the John St. Field pseudonym due to “problems with the forces of law and order”. Recorded in London and helped by musicians from MAN and other friends (Phil Ryan, Juliet Lawson, Jesse Ballard, Joe Kucera…), the album featured a collection of wonderful songs written by Jackie after his experiences wandering away and taking copious amounts of LSD. Unlike previous reissues, this one features the complete tracklist in original running order and also a new insert with previously unseen photos / memorabilia and recollections from some of the musicians involved.

Hawk’s music on this epochal album is a fusion of tribal African rhythms with acoustic hippie music elements — long solo jams, saxophone breaks, percussion — sounding at times like an African version of Embryo fronted by Tim Buckley! In Johannesburg, bursting, like Durban, with musicians aeons ahead of their time, Hawk added the sunburnt, brown prairies of Africa to the genre of the concept album — the heady, steady beat of drums, and enough cross-rhythms to make you dizzy. Add the mesmerizing voices – and the telling of a story. Tuck in the ranging flute, the saxophone. The deep bass buzz. And the hypnotic talking drums. Music the African way: earthy stuff – virile, extraordinary, substantial. Hawk were listening to a lot of Hugh Tracey tapes (the Afro-musicologist who travelled Africa capturing sounds and music on tape for posterity). They went to Swaziland and came back with their own sounds: drums and a burning desire to make their own brand of African music. “Thru The Years” is a compilation album of music by John Mayall released in October 1971 by Decca Records in the U.K. and London Records in the U.S.A. The album was the second compilation to be issued by Decca/London with Mayall's blessing and it features a mixture of previously unissued songs or non-album tracks that had only been released as singles. A grab bag of rare tracks from the '60s, some of which stand among Mayall's finest. His debut 1964 single "Crawling Up a Hill" is one of his best originals. The eight songs featuring Peter Green include some top-notch material that outpaces much of the only album recorded by the Green lineup (A Hard Road), particularly the Green originals "Missing You" and "Out of Reach," a great B-side with devastating, icy guitar lines and downbeat lyrics that ranks as one of the great lost blues-rock cuts of the '60s. The set is filled out with a few songs from the Mick Taylor era, the highlight being the vicious instrumental "Knockers Step Forward."

All the way from Wilson, North Carolina, Milton Ray Matthews was an inspired songwriter in the vein of master Curtis Mayfield and follower Lou Bond. With a series of excellent cover version – BB King ‘The Thrill Is Gone’, The Beatles ‘A Hard Days’ Night’ (stylistically related to the acid r&b Stax records was in charge at the time) and Blind Faith ‘Presence Of The Lord’ - the record is full of acid-blues chops and sensuous numbers. Filling the gap between modern psychedelia and afro-american consciousness, 'For The People' literally ascend to the title of black tinged rock opera.

Svart Records is proud to reissue the production of Argentinian blues rock legend Pappo's Blues as vinyl versions. Guitarist-singer Pappo aka Norberto Aníbal Napolitano (1950 – 2005) is one of his country's biggest rock legends, who also managed to make a career outside his home country. He was there right from the beginning of Argentine rock, as guitarist of the first version of Los Abuelos de la Nada, Conexión Nº 5, Engranaje and Los Gatos, the band that made Argentine rock a household name thanks to the success of their first single, “La Balsa”, which sold more than 200.000 copies in 1967.

Jorge Álvarez (co-founder of the first Argentinian independent rock label Mandioca) encouraged Pappo to develop his own music. What followed was the formation of the first version of Pappo’s Blues in 1971, a trio that had Pappo himself on guitar and vocals, David Lebón on bass and Black Amaya on drums. Their self-named debut album was an unqualified success among the ever-growing audience of Argentine rock. It contained a bundle of all-time classics such as “El hombre suburbano” (The suburban man), “El viejo” (The old man) and “Adónde está la Libertad” (Where is freedom?).

Pappo’s Blues (1971, also known as “Volume One”) introduced a new element to Argentine rock: a harder rock and blues sound, combined with intelligent and sensitive lyrics with centered on the vicissitudes of a typical young man trying to live life according to his own rules, surrounded by the mores of an intolerant society. The arabesques of Pappo’s guitar, complemented by a solid and yet elastic rhythm section, made for an exciting and daring sound, where his trademark rock and blues sound also extended to embrace blues ballads and even excursions into psychedelia.

There’s “obscure” and then there’s this record. This is simply Rockin’ Horse, featuring gods Jimmy Campbell and Billy Kinksley, recording under a different name. Their incredible Yes It Is LP completely flopped in 1971 and their label, Phillips Records, just didn’t want to know. They were still under contract as Rockin’ Horse so they got around that by releasing this single as "atlantis" on their producer HAL CARTER's Fury label in 1972. They should have sold these songs to John Lennon because this smokes anything he was doing at the time yet sounds eerily just like him. Available for the first time since 1972. Edition of 300 copies.

I've never found one, and I've been looking for the better part of two decades. It's a fiery set of Black Sabbath style jamming and worthy of its praise."- Eothen Alapatt aka Egon (Now Again) The Peruvian-Argentinian band Tarkus was only together for six months and recorded only one album, but the record's unprecedented sound and the limited number of copies released made it legendary for fans of hard rock in Latin America. Recorded under the influenced by the Argentinian groups Almendra, Pappo, Manal and Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath from the United Kingdom. Details:The only album released by Peruvian band Tarkus (featuring members of Telegraph Avenue), from 1972, is a heavy psych/hard rock masterpiece with echoes of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Only a handful of promotional copies were made available at the time of its release, making it for years a true lost classic and one of the rarest records of Latin American rock. Tarkus was born after the 1971 split of Telegraph Avenue, one of the most popular Peruvian bands at the time. TA member Walo Carrillo was joined by Argentinian musicians Guillermo Van Lacke, whom he had met previously in Lima, and 16-year-old Darío Gianella. They got together and started making music very influenced by bands such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Deep Purple_ They immediately developed a heavy, hard rock sound uncommon in Peru, and asked former Telegraph Avenue member Alex Nathanson to join them. They recorded their first album between April and May of 1972 for the MAG record label, which was expecting something closer to Telegraph Avenue and didn't know how to market such a heavy sound. Many italian music fans only know Capsicum Red by name because their singer and guitarist Red Canzian had a very successful career (until now!) with pop band Pooh, and this four-piece from Treviso didn’t catch so much interest in their short career.

The name Capsicum Red was chosen by the producer Pino Massara when he discovered Canzian, singer and guitarist with I Prototipi, and took him to his newly-born label Bla Bla in 1970. After assembling a proper group with keyboardist Mauro Bolzan, bassist Walter Gasparini and drummer Paolo Podda (later replaced by Paolo Steffan and Roberto Balocco, the latter from Panna Fredda), Canzian strongly moved with “Appunti per un’idea fissa” towards progressive music with classical influences.

Side A contains the long Beethoven-derived “Patetica” suite, a very interesting piece of classical prog with keyboards to the fore, while side B is interesting too, with three shorter songs.

Heavy UK hard rock album from 1972, produced by Deep Purple’s legendary frontman, Ian Gillan, originally released on the Decca/Deram label. It was Gillan who said of them: “Not many bands really excite me. But this one’s so raw and completely unpretentious. They make the biggest, bloodiest noise you can imagine, tempered with moments of extreme emotion.” And, of course, he’s right—the music is a menacing combination of over-the-top vocals and screaming lead guitars that could easily pass for something from the early British heavy metal scene—or something from the emotional hard core scene of the mid-1990’s (‘Primitive Man’).

Experimental fusion project Jade Warrior began in the early 70s when percussionist/flutist Jon Field and guitarist Tony Duhig joined forces with bassist Glyn Havard; Field and Duhig had been in Second Thoughts which later became July. By the time of Last Autumn’s Dream the group was a quintet with drummer Alan Price and Tony’s younger brother David on lead guitar, allowing for denser explorations of the contrast between world music fusion and acid rock: Dave’s searing guitar leads jostle with eastern flute melodies, African rhythms and meditative folk motifs. Another fine piece of Jade Warrior’s evolution, ripe for rediscovery!
