An obscure Country-Psych Rock relic from Kansas. In 1968 four of the five original members of The Wizards From Kansas formed a band called ‘New West’, and began playing in the Lawrence, Kansas area, at clubs and parties. Californian guitarist Robert Manson Crain joined the group soon thereafter, expanding to a quintet. Reaching on the same esoteric drift as Clear Light or Emitt Rhodes, the band unleashed an even excellent cover of Buffy Sainte-Marie ‘Cod’ine’, more in the vein of Quicksilver M.S.

Bluesy rust-belt psych from Ohio's December's Children! Bouncing between male and female vocalists, tight harmonies, country flavor and rock 'n' roll style, their sound fit the transition between pop and heavy rock in the late '60s. Pressed on pink vinyl!

This country-blues psych album was originally released near the end of 1970, and though it was their sole album, December's Children are a good example of how music was changing between the end of the '60s and beginning of the '70s. Accented by psychedelic keys & organ (especially in "Trilogy"), it's been described as Texas garage rock, with funky, hook driven guitar - particularly in "Sweet Talkin' Woman" and "Last Monday Night."

Opting for a more straight forward rock 'n' roll sound, the band never considered themselves psychedelic (though that was being pushed at the time), and though they weren't as heavy as Blue Cheer, their country-blues sound is nearly a precursor to later albums by Savoy Brown and Blodwyn Pig.

Formed in early 1970 by Deep Purple bassist Nick Simper, Warhorse began as a backing band for singer Marsha Hunt. The group initially also featured Rick Wakeman, but he departed the band in April 1970 to join Strawbs. The band’s self-titled debut album was released on Vertigo in November 1970 and is a fine example of progressive hard rock of the era. With a heavy Hammond organ touch the group was in fact leading a new way of thinking, fusing neoclassical elements with heavy blues. Compared to label mates Black Sabbath, Warhorse were in the end much closer to Atomic Rooster and Quatermass. A truly welcomed re-issue in gatefold vinyl !

Psychedelic hard-rock with occult overtones by this London based band featuring drummer Ric Parnell (Atomic Rooster, Spinal Tap…) This is their sought-after sole album, originally released in 1970 and housed in a cover designed by Roger Wootton of Comus. Horse formed in 1968 when former high school friends Rod Roach and Adrian Hawkins started writing songs together. Rod had previously played lead guitar with various groups (included a brief stint with Andromeda). Horse final line-up was established in early 1969 with Adrian Hawkins on vocals, Rod Roach on guitar, Colin Standring on bass and Ric Parnell on drums. Horse started gigging around London, sharing stage with acts like Deep Purple, Joe Cocker and David Bowie, soon establishing a large following due to their exciting live shows. After receiving interest from several record companies, they finally signed with RCA Records. The Horse self-titled album was recorded at Olympic Studios, produced by Rod Roach, and released in 1970. It’s a fantastic example of post-psychedelia and early hard-rock / proto-metal, dominated by Roach’s killer fuzz-wah guitar and Hawkins powerful vocals. Including tracks like the occult themed “The Sacrifice” and more!

Sensational reissue for the first volume of iconic compilation Simla Beat 70. A psych garage manifesto, the record consisted of groups who appeared at the All-India Simla Beat ‘battle of the bands’ contest held in two years (1970 and '71) in Bombay. The annual event and the records were sponsored by The Imperial Tobacco Company. Bands from all around India would compete for first prize. The album - indeed - was not recorded live on the stage but in a primitive makeshift studio using very little overdubbing or sound reinforcement. The sound is generally influenced by the proto-garage western movement of the mid sixties and later became a massive cult for all the 70s rock fans.

With beginnings firmly in the secular realm and a strong following in the Northwest, Wilson McKinley signed to Alshire Records (home of 101 Strings) and recorded one album under the label's 'acid-rock' moniker, The California Poppy Pickers. With the proceeds from those sessions, they self-released a 7" EP in 1970. But then they met street minister Carl Parks, gave up the rock 'n' roll lifestyle and effectively ended the first incarnation of the group. Parks encouraged the remaining band members to pick up their instruments again to create music for a street meeting, and thus the first 'Jesus Rock' group was born. The first Wilson McKinley LP, 1970's "Live On Stage," was a slapdash effort on all fronts and is generally dismissed by everyone involved (maybe why nobody seems to know the whereabouts of the masters for that one). Chastened by their debut, Wilson McKinley took a more focused approach to "Spirit Of Elijah": the result was a major leap forward, and a faithful representation of their massive talent; the power of the message and the playing shine through! However, what Wilson McKinley recorded onto the master tape and what made it to a buyer's phonograph in 1971 were vastly different things, with inconsistent patches of reverb in the final mix plus other anomalies that a minimally-financed, privately-pressed LP might have.

What do we know about this record? It feels like Syd Barret, TBeatles, Twink, The Deviants, T-Rex, Tomorrow and The Small Faces got together for a boozy and smoky jam session out of which a handful of beautiful songs have emerged, ranging from straight, powerful beat tunes towards joyful flower pop anthems with a bubble gum edge with a layover at melancholic folksy singer / songwriter sounds. What most people do not know ist that the participating musicians are only partly British. This album is the brainchild of renowned Japanese world music / ethno jazz rock artist Osamu Kitajima, who later on went to fame under his own name with some extraordinary progressive albums in the later 70s. He spent a year in England around 1970 to 1971 and recorded this album under the monicker of „Justin Heathcliff“, to make the impression of a true British pop / psyche record with a distinctive late 60s feel perfect. It might not have been a commercial starship around the time it got released, but it stood the test of time and even nearly 50 years after it’s initial release this record still flatters our ears with songs of unearthly beauty on par with the above mentioned English legends. More pop than alternative music of 1968 „Justin Heathcliff“ is a great soul journey to a brighter and more colorful time. This is swinging London, not the apocalyptic hippie Utopia of Haight Asbury in late 1967, or the revolutionary street fights in Germany or France. This is music to comfort your mind and make you feel happy. It even goes back to 1966 when The Beatles did „Revolver“. For a 1971 release this is already a retro affair despite only going back to elements who were five years old at most. It does not matter anyway, this is a masterpiece and Osamu Kitajima is a master of colorful UK 60s pop.
For all fans of The Kinks, Tomorrow, Manfred Man in the late 60s, The Small Faces, Twink, The Beatles etc.

Hailing from Wellington, the windy city and capital of New Zealand, Farmyard's initial line up consisted of Rick White on bass and vocals, Tom Swainson on drums, Milton Parker on lead guitar, Andy Stevens on sax and Paul Curtis on rhythm guitar and lead vocals. Rick White who formed the band, and Milton Parker were originally in fledgling beat combo The Relics. After being kicked out of the Relics, Rick went on to form Tom Thumb. Tom Thumb moved from R&B, to pop, to progressive rock, and their 1970 Ludgate Hill EP is considered one of the first prog recordings in the country.

Released by Polydor in early 1972, Back To Fronting, the second and final LP by Farmyard, was done at a point when the band was imploding and the tracks were produced by the group. They gathered together a great collection of tunes and made it a worthy second outing, continuing the prog sound of their debut and opening it to new influences with some rootsy sounds thrown in the mix.

This is a 500 copies only reissue, housed in its original artwork in a gatefold sleeve and featuring an insert.

Tony Visconti's warm, reverb-soaked production and Roy Thomas Baker's ace engineering remain two of the work's most famous and revered elements. Little Big Horn evolved from Luton-based pop-psych band Wild Silk. As occurred with many British bands from the 60s, they adopted different musical influences as the decade progressed and "underground" was the thing to be, so by the late 60s, Little Big Horn incorporated West Coast, Americana and hard-rock elements to their powerful sound. Their sole album was released only in Germany in 1971 as part of a deal between Shel Talmy Productions and the Bellaphon label (along with other obscure acts like Sunday and Diabolus) and it's an interesting mix of rootsy Americana and heavy rock. Here’s the first ever legit vinyl reissue, expanded to a double LP set with the addition of the killer 45 B-side “Just A Game” and excellent unissued material from the time. Canterbury-based progressive jazz-rock act Ben only released one obscure album, issued on Philips’ prog subsidiary Vertigo in 1971, but it’s a lovely collective of extended instrumental jams, worthy of discovery for those that missed it the first time around. Peter Davey’s saxophone and clarinet melodies push the material to high peaks, against an understated backing from future Nashville Teens bassist, Len Surtees and former Graham Bond drummer, David Sheen, keyboardist Alex Macleery and guitarist Gerry Reid adding flourishes at key moments. The songs “The Wooing Of The Child” and “The Wooing Of The Man” credit a certain K Jarrett as songwriter, making this rare beast all the more intriguing.

After playing in Bodcast with future Yes guitarist Steve Howe, Dave Curtiss and Clive Maldoon formed blues-rock duo Curtiss Maldoon, their self-titled debut released on Deep Purple’s label, Purple Records, in 1971. Repressed for the first time in LP, 1971’s ‘About Time’ was the Ping Pong debut album. Founded by Alan Taylor from The Casuals it was one of the first bands in Italy (based in Bologna) to be inspired by the British sound of the period moving between late ‘60 psychedelic rock and the jazzy prog such Jethro Tull, Tonton Macoute, Camel and Caravan. 10 tracks all sung in English delicate and exceptionally well performed with warm precision, enthusiasm and greater energy in which the excellent musicians highlight their abilities: Celso Valli, who will then participate in many other productions of various genres, organ and piano / Mauro Falzoni acoustic and electric guitar, vocals / Paride Sforza - sax and flute (foreshadowing a signature sound from Italy like Osanna, P.F.M., Delirium, Quella Vecchia Locanda and many others) / Alan Taylor on bass and vocals / Vittorio Volpe (previously in I Meteors and later Paolo Conte's steady drummer) on drums (long solo on Funny Wife). Founded by Alan Taylor from The Casuals it was one of the first bands in Italy (based in Bologna) to be inspired by the British sound of the period moving between late ‘60 psychedelic rock and the jazzy prog such Jethro Tull, Tonton Macoute, Camel and Caravan. 10 tracks all sung in English delicate and exceptionally well performed with warm precision, enthusiasm and greater energy in which the excellent musicians highlight their abilities: Celso Valli, who will then participate in many other productions of various genres, organ and piano / Mauro Falzoni acoustic and electric guitar, vocals / Paride Sforza - sax and flute (foreshadowing a signature sound from Italy like Osanna, P.F.M., Delirium, Quella Vecchia Locanda and many others) / Alan Taylor on bass and vocals / Vittorio Volpe (previously in I Meteors and later Paolo Conte's steady drummer) on drums (long solo on Funny Wife). This album represents the departure of the golden age of Italian progressive music.

Rockin' Horse was formed by Jimmy Campbell (The Kirkbys / 23rd Turnoff) - perhaps the most talented “unknown” musician to come out of the early 60s Liverpool scene- and Billy Kinsley (The Merseybeats / The Merseys). The band recorded Yes It Is (Philips, 1971), a fantastic debut album that should have raced to the top of the charts. The album has gone on to gain cult status amongst power pop fans around the world, fetching astonishingly high prices (even the 2012 reissue!). Having been schooled in the very same musical influences as the Fab Four, the end result is close to the sound the Beatles were creating at the end of their career. Probably... the product of having grown up as contemporaries of The Beatles in Liverpool and listening to the same records and playing the same circuits. Colin Blunstone and Sundazed Music celebrate the 50th anniversary of Colin's post Oracle opus One Year with a double LP expanded edition! The second LP, itself titled, That Same Year, gives you a deeper introspective look into that time in his life. The album largely features Colin singing accompanied solely by his acoustic guitar. That Same Year includes beautifully sparse demo versions of three songs from One Year including 'Caroline Goodbye' and 'Let Me Come Closer To You' where Colin is joined by fellow Zombie Rod Agent on piano. Three songs have Colin joined by Zombie bassist Chris White on classical guitar. Beyond the three familiar songs you will find Colin's familiar voice and wit come through on eleven completely unheard compositions all penned for the One Year album; including 'Sing Your Own Song' where sings of reading about his own death in Rolling Stone. One Year is an album that somehow manages to be both lush and sparse at the same time and always deeply intimate. That Same Year finds a way to bring your listening experience to a deeper level of intimacy. In addition to penning most of the album, Colin also penned the liner notes that fill the gatefold jacket along with unseen photos from that year. The notes go track by track through One Year along with some background on That Same Year.

Fully licensed, ltd to 500 copies, 180 gr. The biblical ten commandments are surely the main inspiration behind this concept album originally released on british independent label Young Blood in 1971. The one and only release by Salamander, a short- lived UK four piece , the album is a quintessential prog opera with a heavy effort on Hammond organ and lush orchestral arrangements. Comprised of Alister Benson (Organ, Vocals), Dave Chriss (Bass), John Cook (Drums) and Dave Titley (Lead Vocals, Guitar) the band was often compared to The Moody Blues and Deep Purple Mark I. Even if the 10 tracks are inspired by the holy script, the band was not proven to be Christian rock itself. The album is a sublime pompous pop affair, with a good dose of fuzz guitars and brass section.
